DBD 1.30.12 Why does the GOP hate Berkeley?
I realized something the other day.
Cal has not won a bowl game in the Obama Administration.
And if there is anything that PoliSCi3 taught me, it is that correlation equals causation! Now, I don't know why Obama is so keen at keeping Cal out of any sort of late season promised land. Last bowl game we won was in December 2008. Thanks, Dubya! Appreciate everything you did for us. Great president! Really brought around the rejuvenation of Cal football.
So, this realization brought me two further realizations:
1. I am now the BIGGEST Republican ever. Priorities, people! If we are going to have a President so focused on keeping bowl games away from us, do any of his other policies even matter?
2. I am really fucking pissed at the Republicans. Can you get a candidate who can actually beat Obama? I mean c'mon! Cal's bowl games hang in the balance. This isn't some time to play footsy with South Carolinians! We need men of action! Not just men who will promise a Poinsettia bowl from time to time. We need men with clear cut plans to get us Alamo Bowls, Holiday Bowls, and DARE I SAY IT a Rose Bowl or 10.
In conclusion, NEWTMENTUM!

Cal runner sets record in mile:
SEATTLE, Wash. – Sophia Oberg obliterated the Cal record in the women’s mile by seven seconds and Golden Bears swept the top three positions in the men’s long jump and first two places in the women’s 400 meters to highlight the final day of the UW Invitational Saturday.
Senior Taylor Dutch actually broke the school mark in the mile before Oberg, finishing her section in 4:48.53, which was just ahead of Chelsea Reilly’s 2010 record of 4:48.89. However, the mark stood for only about five minutes, as Oberg crossed the line in 4:41.57 in the next section race.
“That was a great time for Sofia,” Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said. “It was a big drop for her and a good beginning to her season.”
Oberg, who redshirted indoors last year, is coming off a strong summer in which she ran 4:17.72 in the 1500 meters during a meet in her native Sweden to put her third on Cal’s all-time performer list in that event.

MBB beats Cardinal:
BERKELEY (AP) – Jorge Gutierrez took little satisfaction walking off California’s home floor guaranteed of a perfect record at Haas Pavilion against rival Stanford.
“Personally,” he said, “I don’t think it’s a rivalry.”
In the last three-plus years, Gutierrez and the rest of Cal’s senior class have sure made it seem that way.
Allen Crabbe scored 18 points and Gutierrez had 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Golden Bears past Stanford 69-59 on Sunday in front of the program’s first home sellout in almost two years.

GREAT WIN! And I finally got to watch a game on TV!
I was actually pretty nervous for awhile. They had that crafty Serbian who was abusing us. But great effort in the 2nd half.

It was a great win, and Haas was packed and loud which was great, but I feel like we didn’t really play all that well as a team. There were some good individual efforts, but we didn’t seem very cohesive either on offense or on defense. We were awesome in transition, but we had a lot of trouble in the half-court set. It felt like we keep passing around the perimeter and taking jump shots, while the middle of the floor was open, and ’furd’s defense seemed vulnerable to the drive-and-dish. I dunno, it was a little odd. Glad we won, though.

It’s crazy to gripe about a kid who lead us in scoring, but does anyone else feel Crabbe sort of disappears during games? I want him to develop a mean streak…a killer attitude. I know his stats always end up nice, but when I watch it seems that doesn’t assert himself for periods of time. Maybe I’m being too hard.

Love his shooting/scoring abilities, but he can still improve his dribbling and penetration. Also, I’m super impressed by his length on defense and his rebouding

I agree on the penetration. I also see a lot of wild passes from him (a lot of lefty one-handed passes that get stolen, like Steph Curry does for the Dubs).

Teams are really focusing on denying him the ball. When we have Jorge/Cobbs out there, it’s easier to get the offense off-balance and make them pay for all the attention on Crabbe. It’s a lot tougher when Smith is in because his outside shot has been AWOL this year.
Old Toothwrangler
This makes sense. If I were a defender I would be really aggressive with Crabbe. Would hand check and body check a lot pushing him around and using up my fouls.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the kid.

Well
I think the frustration stems from the fact that we feel his ceiling is so high. He’s a great player right now, but if he had Jorge’s bulldog attitude combined with his talent and athletic ability…. Man, he could be something special.

Warriors Homerism (written by a Cal grad!)
A great memory I took from the "We Believe run" happened off the court, away from the arena, away from a TV even. I recall stepping outside my apartment on a clear warm day, strolling down Shattuck Avenue as bicyclists wove around. They sported the yellow GSW jerseys, the sun beamed off that mesh. Behind them, verdant hills crawled upwards for miles. I spotted more people in more unis. Call it bandwagon, but it was nice to see locals reconnect with an old friend. The love of pro basketball lies largely dormant here, always primed for an excuse to show out. The sanguine aura of that fairly mundane day stays with me. It felt like mutual happiness in a place that can make you constantly give thanks for life.

WBB falls in OT to Stnaford:
Stanford, Calif. (AP) – The California players celebrated when they forced two Stanford misses in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime. The Golden Bears were unable to celebrate a second time as they once again fell just short against a marquee team.
Chiney Ogwumike scored three of her career-high 27 points in overtime to go with a career-high 18 rebounds and Cal made just one field goal in the extra session to lose 74-71 to No. 4 Stanford on Saturday.
“We want to put ourselves in the company of the elite programs in the country,” first-year coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “I think we’ve done that. Now we need that next step: knock down free throws when we need to, take advantage of what they’re giving us, get critical stops. That’s all part of the process.”
Cal fell to 1-4 this season against ranked opponents, with the only win coming in Hawaii in November against former coach Joanne Boyle’s Virginia team. The losses have been by a combined nine points.

3 Bears play in Pro Bowl:
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Former Cal football players Tony Gonzalez, Marshawn Lynch and Aaron Rodgers all put up impressive numbers playing for the NFC in a 59-41 Pro Bowl loss to the AFC on Sunday at Aloha Stadium. Andre Carter was also selected to the AFC roster for the game but did not play due to injury and because his New England Patriots are preparing for Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants next Sunday.
Playing in his second Pro Bowl and starting the game for the first time, Rodgers gave the NFC an early 14-0 lead by completing two touchdown passes to Larry Fitzgerald on back-to-back offensive plays in a nine-second span early in the first quarter. The Green Bay quarterback found the Arizona receiver for a 10-yard score with 9:14 remaining to complete an eight-play, 51-yard drive. After a David Akers’ onside kick was recovered by the NFC at the AFC 44-yard line, Rodgers and Fitzgerald hooked up for a 44-yard connection on the next play.

Mens tennis beats LSU:
BERKELEY – The 13th-ranked California men’s tennis team (2-0) earned a 4-0 shutout of No. 32 LSU (1-1) on Sunday, Jan. 29, in the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend event held at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears have advanced into the second round and will face the winner between No. 25 Minnesota (1-0) and No. 27 San Diego (1-0) for one of 16 spots in the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships set for Feb. 17-20, at the Boar’s Head Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va.
“We came out a little bit nervous, today,” said head coach Peter Wright. “It was the first real home match of the year after a long break with the rain-out, last week, but I think we got it done on a lot of courts. We had a lot of poise. LSU is a well-coached team. We had really good leadership from our older players, today.”
As the day got started, the Tigers took the first bite as their team of Neal Skupski and James Turbervill came up with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against junior Riki McLachlan and senior Tommie Murphy. Though the first two doubles courts had closer matches, the Bears on court two came away with an 8-5 win to even the score as Cal’s 27th-ranked team of junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan defeated Roger Anderson and Stefan Szacinski.

Ruigby beats SacSt 48-3:
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – California defeated Sacramento State, 48-3, in the featured nightcap Saturday at the Kick Off Tournament. Jack O’Beirne scored two of the Golden Bears eight tries, Brandon Kraft made 3-of-6 conversions and Andre Coquillard converted 1-of-2.
Hornets scrumhalf Chris Turner was the lone scorer for Sac State, connecting on a 15-meter penalty kick in the 59th minute. Turner missed an earlier attempt from 30 meters and the Bears were otherwise able to shut down their opponents as the temperature plummeted.
“It’s great to get out there and play fluidly, but there’s definitely a lot to work on,” said match captain Zack Klaas. “In the second half we let off the gas a little bit but all in all, a good effort.”
Scrumhalf Paul Bosco said the Bears “played to our pattern and really quickly, which is what we’re aiming for this season. It was a big step forward in terms of the pace that we want to play.”
The Bears hustled to the event – now in its 28th year, featuring Under-8 through high school and U-19 sides, and hosted by Sacramento Valley Youth Rugby in partnership with the Sacramento Valley High School Rugby Conference – after beating Stanford earlier in the day.

Cal Beats Cardinal, 109-0, to Keep Scrum Axe
STANFORD, Calif. – Danny Barrett scored four tries, Seamus Kelly had a hat trick, Anthony Lombardo and Jake Wrobel had two each, and six other Golden Bears found the try zone as California defeated Stanford, 109-0, Saturday at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
Flyhalf Alex Aronson connected on 6-of-8 conversions and fullback Jake Anderson converted 7-of-9 while the Bears prevented the Cardinal from reaching the try zone.
Stanford flyhalf Jason Liljenquist was unable to avert the shutout when his 40-meter penalty kick bounced off the crossbar in the 49th minute.

NinersNation talks Pro Bowl:
For those that weren’t paying attention (likely most of you) the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl turned in its usual offensive fireworks as the AFC blew out the NFC 59-41. Brandon Marshall was the MVP of the game thanks to his six receptions for 176 yards and a Pro Bowl record four touchdowns. Larry Fitzgerald looked like he was on his way to an MVP performance with two touchdowns in the first quarter, but the NFC defense fell apart (well, moreso than normal for a Pro Bowl) and Marshall benefited.
The 49ers had numerous participants in the game, but as has been the case much of the season, the special teamers stood out. David Akers successfully attempted two onside kicks, with long snapper Brian Jennings recovering the second one. Andy Lee got in on the action as well, completing a pass to Patrick Peterson on a fake punt that netted a first down.

Warriors lose to Thunder:
Creating Turnovers
We knew going into this one that the Thunder can be a bit turnover prone at times, and that the Warriors have shown an ability to create turnovers at times. So what happened tonight? The Thunder ended the night with 22 turnovers including 7 from Westbrook, and 7 from Durant. In the second half it seemed like the Thunder were just begging for the Warriors to take the lead, but every time OKC tried to hand the Dubs the game they handed it right back. Golden State ended up with 20 turnovers themselves. But hey, I thought I said I was going to focus on the positive… moving on…
Shoot the Three!
A lot of Warriors fans have been calling for more of a focus on getting three point shots on offense, and tonight that was one of the big reasons the Warriors were able to hang around so long. They put up 28 threes tonight and made 43% of them. With Rush, Curry, Thompson, and Wright out there this team should have no trouble taking and making threes. So far this season they’ve had a hard time consistently translating Monta penetration, and an improved post presence from Lee, into effective kickouts for open threes. Tonight they moved the ball around and found the open man outside.

Forbe's Most Overpriced Cities
Overall, Los Angeles took the top spot on our list this year (eight other California cities were also on the ranking). In LA and Santa Ana (#15) only 43% to 45% of residents can afford to own homes and daily livings costs closely trail New York’s in terms of priceyness. Up north, three Silicon Valley cities make our list: San Jose at No. 8, Oakland at No. 14, and San Francisco at No. 19. "Coastal state cities are high-amenity cities and people are willing to pay more for those amenities," explains Robert Helsley, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, specializing in real estate development and urban economics.

Isn’t ‘overpriced’ subjective? I thought price was just a natural consequence of limited supply of beautiful california cities and demand of people who want to live in those places. Also, this lists ranks San JO > Oakland > SF. Just sayin.
FUTBALL IZ SRS BUSINESS GUYZ // ONLY HAVE FUN WHEN ROZ BWL
--Thoroughbred
The list is using “overpriced” as a function of affordability, so higher salaries can pay for higher costs of living, and some expensive places are then not overpriced. A place like Fresno, where everyone and their nan is unemployed, is overpriced because even a $129K house is out of reach for the residents.
SacTown Royalty recaps the week:
The Good:
1. DeMarcus Cousins
See Player of the Week
2. Jimmer Fredette’s Shooting
Jimmer’s shot has finally arrived in the NBA. He’s still struggling in other areas of the game (playmaking, defense), but his shooting has been phenomenal. He shot 48.4% from the field and a whopping 64.7% (11-17) from three over this past week. His 3P% is now up to 38% for the year, and it will continue to rise with more consistent shooting performances.
3. Isaiah Thomas Off the Bench
Isaiah might be the best bench player currently on the Kings. For a rookie, that’s saying something. When he comes into the game, he’s able to bring energy, a scoring punch, and distribution. His defense is still a work in progress, but he has the quickness and mindset to become a pesky defender in time, despite his size. His shooting needs to become consistent as well, although his shot looked very good these past two games.

SSR talks Lakers Big Three:
One could make the case that the Lakers possess the best “Big Three” in the league, even better than that team from South Beach. Unfortunately the Lakers big three of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Andrew Bynum have yet to put together a dominating group performance. The season began with Bynum out due to suspension; he then returned and Gasol struggled; then both big men faltered while Kobe went on his scoring binge; then Kobe dialed back the field goal attempts and neither big men emerged from their funk. Tonight we were finally treated to the offensive potential that this trio is capable of as they combined for 86 points. Not only did this outburst result in a win, but it resulted in the first time in thirteen games the Lakers broke the century mark on offense.
The Lakers began the game by force feeding Pau Gasol, whose efforts bore fruit tonight as he scored 14 points in the opening period on 6 of 8 shooting. The second and third periods saw the offense shift to Kobe on the perimeter and Bynum inside. Then in the fourth quarter after a furious Wolves comeback, the door was slammed shut in a 12-2 run where the Lakers scored on six straight possession, with each member of the trio contributing 4 points in the run. It was a stark contrast to the struggles seen in many of the close games the Lakers have endured so far this season.
Pau Gasol’s offensive performance was nearly flawless. He scored 28 points on 11 of 15 shooting while dishing out three assists with not a single turnover. He played like the Pau Gasol that has two championship rings and not like the passive player that infuriates this loyal fan base. Gasol’s performances have been anything but consistent as he has flipped back and forth from white swan to black swan. He showed once again what he is capable of tonight. Now the Lakers need him to demonstrate it consistently.

Clips beat Denver:
The Los Angeles Clippers went into one of the toughest buildings in the league, against the hottest team in the league, and came away with a 109-105 win. And the weird thing is they didn’t play that well. What they did was shoot well.
Chauncey Billups scored a game high 32 in his Denver homecoming against his former Nuggets team. Billups made 6 of 12 three pointers, and the Clippers as a team made 14 of 30 threes, more than one of them of the bail out variety late in shot clocks.
The Clippers gave up a 12-1 run to fall behind by ten points early in the fourth quarter with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul on the bench. It was the biggest deficit of the game for the Clippers, but they brought their Paul and Griffin back into the game and immediately went on a 10-0 run to tie the game.
Down the stretch, Billups made the play of the game with a difficult and-one with the score tied at 99. Lawler’s Law clicked in on the bucket, and the Clippers were bound to win the game. As if that were not enough, Billups also made the defensive play of the game. With the Clippers clinging to a two point lead and 17 seconds left, Billups got switched onto Nene on a pick and roll. Although he was at a massive size disadvantage, Billups is one of the few guards in the league with enough strength to bother Nene. He crowded the big Brazilian, and when the pass finally came Nene pushed off to gain some space and was called for the offensive foul that essentially iced the game for the Clippers.

The 31-year-old forward said last week that it’s only a matter of time before she or Canada’s Christine Sinclair topple Hamm’s record of 158, but that’s still a few years off.
Wambach left for a sub at halftime, but Morgan continued merrily on, scoring her second goal in the 56th.

Saw a good chunk of that game. Good to see Alex doing well.
On a side note, I don’t think they conceded a single goal this entire tournament. Amazing.

Canada came close last night, but Hope shut ’em down !!!!!!
Nice to see Alex Morgan starting instead of coming off the bench. Clearly she’s earned it.

FearTheFin crunches some numbers:
As most of you probably know by now, I’ve been tracking Sharks scoring chances this season, both here on Fear the Fin and previously at The Neutral. For an in-depth review of what constitutes a scoring chance, please see this post from about a month ago (the most pertinent stuff, including a diagram of the scoring chance area, is right after the jump). Since it’s only been 16 games since the last roundup, I won’t inundate everyone with a complete breakdown of the numbers but seeing as there’s some downtime here during the All-Star break, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at zonestart-adjusted scoring chances for individual players.
Obviously, not every player in the league starts an equal percentage of their shifts in the offensive and defensive zones. Coaches make strategic decisions based on players’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as the overall composition of their rosters, to shelter some players with more shifts in the opponent’s end of the ice and rely on others in a defensive role, most frequently sending those players over the boards to take care of business in their own end. The most extreme example of zonestart distribution happens in Vancouver, where Henrik and Daniel Sedin have begun 79% of their EV shifts in the offensive zone this season while former Shark Manny Malhotra allows them to do so by starting a ridiculously low 13% of his own shifts in the opponent’s end of the ice.

Best Places for Peyton Manning
1. Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs showed their mettle late in the season and almost wormed their way into the playoffs a second straight year. Manning would be an instant upgrade at quarterback over Matt Cassel and has a top-tier target there in Dwayne Bowe. Also, a nice young defense has been constructed in K.C., which would get the ball in Manning’s hands more often.
3. San Francisco 49ers: Yes, Alex Smith grew up a lot this season. Yes, he had a playoff game for the ages against New Orleans to get into the NFC championship game. But when the chips were down, he couldn’t move the offense and the New York Giants are in the Super Bowl instead.

Went to the As FanFest yesterday. Firstly, they had it at the Oracle Arena and now the Coliseem. I tried to enter the Coliseum and got confused. I asked one of hte security guys and thoguht he was joking when he said to go to Oracle. But he wasnt! Here are some photos.
So, we went and listend to some of the Q+As. Players were moving around a lot. Getting photos here with fans. Signing autographs here. Answering questions here. We basically had enough time to be in 1 line. We did the clubhouse line, which was fun. We got to see the VERY walkway where they filmed the scene in Moneyball where Brad Pitt walked down the hall and the security guard turned off the TV. I got to breath the same air that Brad Pitt breathed!
We got to meet Eric Sogard. I asked him to do my taxes.
Then, there was a plyer I didnt know and couldnt recognize. I took a photo with him so I could figure it out later. Its Tom Millone obtained in the Gio trade.
Then, Mike Gallego! I asked him if we were moving to SJ and he said the coaches were the last to know.
Then, Brandon Allen. My friend thinks he is really cute and was so excited to meet him. But she is an Angels fan. So, when she went to shake his hand, I went “Dont shake her hand, shes an Angels fan!” He went “Unbeleivable!” And my friend got mad! Oh well. She can curl up with her Albert Pujols jersey.
BTW, no weekend Angels serieses this year???! They do have 3 weekend NYY/BOS series, so thats sweet. But I was looking forward to seeing Albert and CJ Wilson.
They asked the players which team they wanted to beat the most and Cliff Pennington said “Angels, bc of CJ WIlson bla bla bla” and hte fans went crazy. At the Q+A the bleacher crew was there with their flags and they were doing chants and whatnot.
One of the peopleI was with is (was) a big ANer, so I got to have a front row seat to all their drama. We did see Nico and I briefly chatted with him. Hes never been anything less than respectful and kind to me, so I have no reason to be rude to him. But my friend just walked past him without saying hi or anything. I did get a chance to go to the AN Tailgate, which was fun.
If I think of more storees from the day, Ill write em in. Here are a bunch of photos.

I think they did it there to make it look more packed. And it was fairly well attended. Super long lines for autographs, photos (with players/ World Series trophies). They had Q+As in the main basketball arena:

Impressive memory.
I dont know the whole story, but my vague idea is that Nico banned somebody and then there was a big uproar over the banning. It sorta escalated from there and a bunch of people left to another rival As site. My friend has been reading AN since 2005 and posts at this new site now instead.

There were WELL over 100. There were easily over 100 in the line I waited in for the clubhouse access. Most of the people were sitting on the side of the arena that I was. Bc thats where you entered, so you just wandered in and sat down. The other side looks really really empty bc nobody was rea`lly over in that area much.

Since I have family in OR, yes, I do in fact know that, and yes, it is ineffably stupid.
As I regularly complain here, I gave up on the “all games except on Saturdays and many other times” DirecTV package because I tried to watch a weekday A’s game. A road game. In Texas. That was not broadcast at all in the bay area. That, friends, is inexcusably stupid.

We just do the phone audio version and then plug in our phone wherever we go and then we listen through our phone because baseball is best on the radio (via phone).

I hate to ask, but are vosotros telling me that Sirius doesn’t include the MLB games absent an add-on subscription? I suppose that’s no worse than paying for a cable package and not getting them, but I thought that was a big draw for sat radio.

MLB was/is on XM so there was a merger yeah but we are still a “Sirius” subscriber so we get the “Sirius” magic content: Howard Stern, NFL, some college hoops, blah blah blah, on one radio (currently: phone) (unless we want more subscriptions), If we wanted the “XM” magic content ( MLB, Opie & Anthony (blech), … ) we’d have to pay for the full Sirius/XM “everything” (whatever) package, which now that we look at it again is cheaper than doing MLB separately so THANK YOU (actually we’ll probably flip it all again to sign up for our nu car and then have our phone be the $3 add-on NOT LOOKING FWD TO THIS CALL TO INDIA)
WE ARE THE 0%
(we still have to see if internet add on for nu xm account for nu car will have howard stern and etc. REALLY NOT LOOKING FWD TO THIS CALL TO INDIA)
WE ARE THE 0%
OK, so it looks like in order to get baseball we will have to cancel our Sirius subscription and sign up as an XM customer with our nu car and then add on the Sirius stuff we want and then also add our Internet (phone) listening cuz
XM subscribers can enjoy every MLB game all season long, as well as year-round baseball talk with MLB Network Radio, as part of their regular subscriptions. Discussions continue with Major League Baseball and we remain hopeful an agreement will be reached to allow SIRIUS subscribers to hear the games.
Very confusing cuz they advertise the damn MLB talk station everywhere to us Sirius chaps with not much mention that it isn’t the games it’s just a stupid talk station.
So yeah, the MLB accounts are simple in comparison. ;)
WE ARE THE 0%
that's almost as dumb as MLB's byzantine options
I assumed XM and Sirius would have merged totally by now, silly me. And at one point pre merger XM was allowing free access to the games at Holiday Inns which was a cool benefit. I think that ended last year or the year prior. It was def included with XM in rental cars too when Budget used to pay for the XM service.

A friend of mine is a professional banjo player. He spent a summer driving around the south in an RV playing for money in thes treets. If people asked him to play Dueling Banjos, he and his friend had this whole shtich where theyd be all like “do we know..that song, hmm, does it go like this?” and then theyd basically play it all wrong for a bit before just cranking it out with 1,000x ferocity.

Nah, it’s just people behave so boorishly towards each other when a simple civil comment would achieve so much more. Like I said, the old guy isn’t a bad guy, he just got frustrated that someone was standing in front of him (though to be fair, I was two rows in front of him and I had to BARELY be impeding his view). It’s the people behind him that are just miserable SOBs…. they get all outraged – OUTRAGED – that someone would excitedly stand up at a basketball game… And as I said, instead of handling it in a friendly non-confrontational way, they start yelling and acting like petulant asses.
Oh, I’m sure he’ll write back. It just takes him a bit.
He was really cool about setting things up and giving us additional tickets. Might have been a glitch when he added the extras to our original allotment.

Samoan pirate?
Omg dooooooooooooom
In the past 48 hours, Mike Leach has announced to the world that he is now staking a claim in American Samoa. Along with Destiny Vaeao, the two latest commits both hail from the tiny island in the South Pacific. According to CF.C, this time Robert Barber has pledged his allegiances to the Washington State Cougars. Samoan pipeline!
Also, Mike Leach does his conditioning at night. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
A portion of teamwork is sacrifice. During the two-week conditioning circuit, I wanted them to sacrifice their evenings. We called it Midnight Maneuvers. We would actually start around 10 at night. The timing was perfect because that’s roughly the time of day when we’d be playing a lot of fourth quarters. I’ve heard a lot of teams do their conditioning at dawn, but how many games are their players going to play before breakfast?
We’d have our guys do a bunch of stations, where they’d have to do everything from bear crawls, to dot drills for their footwork, to obstacle courses. Better still, we knew they weren’t out with their buddies partying. Instead, they were with their team. They gave up their nights because it was a team endeavor. We were working together as a team — it was a good message to send.

"Ferris Bueller 2" = Honda CR-V ad
Super Bowl ads: Broderick’s Ferris Bueller takes day off for Honda
Ferris Bueller has been gone from the big screen for more than a quarter-century, but he receives the perfect homage in an extended cut of a new Super Bowl ad for the Honda CR-V released Monday (check it out below).
Without ever mentioning the names Bueller, Cameron or Principal Rooney, director Todd Phillips and the creative team at the Santa Monica ad agency RPA pay homage to the cinematic truant in a 2½-minute short that is a veritable festival of references for ‘80s movies geeks. (The material, which continues a Super Bowl advertising trend of referencing modern classics such as “Star Wars” and “Vacation” — that is, movies thirtysomething and fortysomething consumers grew up with — will air as a 60-second commercial in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Patriots-Giants game.)
Yup, still don’t care about this.

really hate “news” stories about Super Bowl commercials. Super Bowl Sunday is basically a national holiday for capitalism.

So Saturday morning as I was beginning my meander up to the Bay Area, I took the coast all the way up, I stopped in Ventura… You ever get Driscol Strawberries? This is where they are from… I think the biggest strawberry growers are a three Japanese families… anyway, you know what is frickin’ amazing about California… is we get fresh produce in January! if you ever get a chance I highly recommend you head out directly to some of the farms for your produce… Look at those strawberries, picked that morning… man it doesn’t get better…. I actually got to go out and pick some myself…
You know, with all its faults and crappy government, California is still an amazing place.

Drove by those fields 5 days a week all through high school. Not long after we’d moved to CA, we saw our first INS bust in the fields by the side of the 101 – pickers showing an impressive turn of speed trying to get to their trucks. It did make us wonder what kind of odd place my dad had picked for us to live.

It was substantially built up along the highway from the late 80s onward. There used to be almost nothing between Las Posas Rd in Camarillo and Oxnard, and then all sorts of office parks and strip malls were put in… total waste of some of the best farmland in the world.

I hope we save as much as this land as we can. It’s cool in the heart of Orange County the Irvine Company has set aside fields to still grow produce.
but yeah…would totally like it if those remaining sections of farmland in urban/suburban areas would remain so if possible.

MR PITT IS DEAD:
Ian Abercrombie, the classically trained British stage actor best known to American TV audiences as Elaine Benes’ nutty boss Mr. Pitt on “Seinfeld,” died of a heart attack Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 77.
Abercrombie appeared on several other U.S. TV shows. He played the 800-year-old Professor Crumbs on "Wizards of Waverly Place and a butler on “Desperate Housewives,” and made guest appearances on “Twin Peaks,” “Dynasty” and “Days of Our Lives.”
He appeared in a number of movies, including “Stalag 17,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “The Prisoner of Zenda,” with Peter Sellers.

"#caltrollgang" - RB
I think we could’ve been a 7 seed in 2010, which would have been way way preferable to an 8. Anyway, how about the year before? That team full of seniors deserved better than a 7 and a matchup with Maryland. And of the 7 seeds, we got the toughest matchup; the other 7 seeds got matched up with Michigan, Minnesota and USC.

We had one on campus at SC that took the same meal points as the dorm dining halls.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
There was also a “cafe” in the athletes’ dorm (built for the 84 Olympics, apparently) that would deliver a pizza on meal points… but the real killer was the campus bar that let you buy pitchers on meal points. (I never tried because I had a total baby face and no fake ID).
This was all because the university sold meal points to commuter students / anyone who lived off the main campus (ie, almost everyone) to draw more revenue off campus food purveyors. The frozen yogurt stand was popular with certain segments of the student population, for instance.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

it’s weird. Nadal pwns Federer; Djokovic pwns Nadal. as a Fed fan, I’m kinda happy that Nadal has a foil because he’d be much closer to reaching Fed’s record of 16 majors.

I just love the aesthetics of Fed’s game—so clean, so classic, so efficient. it’s how tennis is “supposed” to look, and it’s why I dislike Nadal (at least his game), because it’s a complete contrast in styles.
by the federer express on Jan 30, 2012 12:21 PM PST up reply actions
Also, don’t you play a lot of tennis? I find that goes a long way to explaining it, it’s people who don’t play tennis that are fans of one player that I don’t understand. Same for golf.

by the federer express on Jan 30, 2012 12:27 PM PST up reply actions
Nadal had it, but...
Indeed, a single stroke in the fifth set helped swing the match back in Djokovic’s favor. Nadal was soaring, holding easily and leading 4-2 thanks to a break in the sixth game, while a weary Djokovic had lost pop on his shots. Up 30-15 on his serve with a 5-2 advantage in sight, Nadal got a short ball and was well positioned to hit a winner. Instead, the Spaniard hesitated and sent his backhand wide, turning a potential 40-15 edge into a precarious 30-all situation. Djokovic seized the opening to break back, using his return of serve to help shift momentum again.

3. to spread (rumors, news, etc.).
verb (used without object)
4. to carry wares about for sale; peddle.
hock

2. the state of being deposited or held as security; pawn: She was forced to put her good jewelry in hock.

Blue Palms Brew House Announces It Will Close Its Doors Next Week Because of Music Box Eviction
http://laist.com/2012/01/27/blue_palms_announces_its_doors_next.php
Blue Palms Brew House announced that it will be closing its doors next week—at least temporarily—when the operators of the Music Box at the Henry Fonda are evicted.
The tenure of the bar and restaurant housed inside the Music Box was thrown into jeopardy, because it sub-leases its space through the music venue, which shut down earlier this month. Blue Palms was able to negotiate with the owner of the property (and the support of the beer community) to stay open for a few more weeks, but its time has finally run out. Yesterday an eviction notice was posted to the front of the Music Box announcing that the operators would be evicted January 31.
Blue Palms says that it hopes to work something out with the property owners so that it can open again soon once the owners find a new operator to run the Music Box venue.
Doh! (this place’s pretty good, and apparently, run by a cal guy…)
The Music Box shut down? :-/

edwardian ball san francisco.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/01/29/LVRJ1MSVP4.DTL

In the Bay Area, which drives the world’s latest inventions in futuristic technology, San Francisco’s recent Edwardian Ball, where thousands of people gathered to celebrate all things circa 1900, seemed a curious turn to the past.
Forget about microprocessors and cell phones (although those were used to document the evening’s far-out entertainment). This party, the 12th annual, was a nod to the years marked by the rule of King Edward VII, the advent of electricity, the automobile and Art Nouveau. In keeping with the period theme, women wore corsets, long skirts and hats with feathers, while men sported waistcoats, cravats and top hats. The ball is also an homage to cult illustrator and author Edward Gorey, known for macabre drawings and stories.
“This is more a fictitious, idealized view of history – if history had been pristine and perfect,” said Marlin Pohlman of Campbell. By day, he is global strategy director for the Cloud Security Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to the promotion of best practices for security assurance within cloud computing; on this night, he was a gentleman in layers of coats and a top hat.
“Everyone wears sweat pants and hoodies, jeans and hoodies, every day, and everything has gotten bland and boring,” said his wife, Amy Elle Bordeaux, a writer and dancer in a black and white gown and dramatically fringy black-and-white false eyelashes. “I like to try to incorporate a little bit of Edwardian dress into my wardrobe every day.”
….
I read that as “She looks like good weird fun”.

Scotland!
The iPhone’s Siri doesn’t seem so smart in Scotland
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-scotland-siri-20120131,0,5361422.story
Reporting from Edinburgh, Scotland— D’ye want me tae spaek more clearly, Siri?
Aye, ye would.
The Scottish have long been accustomed to ridicule and bafflement over their accents from their fellow Brits, who strain to decipher words like “cannae” and “daftie” (for the record: “can’t” and “fool”). But you’d think that Siri, the voice-activated virtual assistant in Apple’s latest iPhone, would take a nice Scottish brogue in its stride.
Think again. Since the phone debuted in October, many of the Scots who rushed to buy it have discovered that their new “smart” gadget can’t understand them. This is true despite the fact that their phones are set to “English (United Kingdom)” under the “language” setting for Siri, which doesn’t seem to take the distinctive Scottish burr into much account.
“What’s the weather like today?” Darren Lillie said hopefully into his iPhone recently here in the Scottish capital, in a demonstration for an American reporter.
Lillie, 25, is Edinburgh born and bred, and his thick accent shows it.
Siri thought for a moment, then decided it best to repeat what it thought it heard.
“What’s available in Labor Day?” it asked.
Lillie shook his head. “I don’t even know what Labor Day is,” he said ruefully to the American, who told him.
Completely unsurprising. (Not entirely SFW)
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
This must be unclesam22’s problem.

That bad attitude? Blame the birth month
http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-birth-season-20120130,0,533330.story?track=icymi
If you don’t believe in horoscopes, you’re in step with science. But that’s not the same as saying the season of your birth cannot affect your fate. Hundreds of studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, have suggested that the month a person is born in is associated with characteristics such as temperament, longevity and susceptibility to certain diseases.
Scientists say that even though some of these findings are probably spurious — if you dig around in data, you will eventually find correlations just by chance — other effects are very likely real, triggered not by the alignment of the planets but by exposures during prenatal and early postnatal lives.
Temperature, sunshine, seasonal foods, winter infections: All can affect the development of a baby and, as a result, its future. Here’s a look at the findings and what scientists make of them.
Winter (Dec. 22 to March 20):
Body weight: Men with a few pounds to lose may have another excuse why that stubborn fat won’t leave. David Phillips of the University of Southampton in England analyzed the weight of 1,750 British seniors and found that 13.8% of men with birthdays from January to March qualified as obese but only 9.4% of those born from October to December did so. In women, seasonal trends were less apparent. Phillips argues that exposure to low temperatures in early life might promote development of fatty tissue and predispose winter-borns to obesity in adulthood. Lab studies support his theory: Rats subjected to cold before or soon after birth store more ingested energy as fat, even when the temperature is no longer low.
Temperament: A 2004 psychological questionnaire of 448 men and women found that 20- to 45-year-olds born during the half year containing winter (October to March) are more likely to be novelty seekers — curious, hating monotony, apt to choose sky diving over Sudoku as a hobby. The same didn’t apply to those older than 45: At these ages, winter-borns were less interested in novelty-seeking than summer-borns, suggesting they settle down faster. “Season of birth does influence temperament; we just don’t know exactly why,” says Lars-Göran Nilsson, a psychologist at Stockholm University in Sweden, who in 2001 published a study on this subject in the journal Neuropsychobiology. He thinks it has something to do with levels of serotonin and dopamine, key brain chemicals that seem to be involved in formation of personality. “Throughout the year, their production fluctuates in a mother’s body and might affect development of a fetus,” Nilsson says. Animal studies suggest the fluctuations are due to changes in day length.

WPS suspends 2012 season
SAN FRANCISCO — Women’s Professional Soccer won’t play the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner.
The league’s Board of Governors voted Monday to suspend the season with hopes of resuming in 2013, the WPS announced.
In October, it terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with owner Dan Borislow all season. A Florida judge ruled earlier this month that the league failed to follow its own dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise, and another court hearing is set for Wednesday.

Hoffpauir prediction requires an LOL
It will come down to either Stanford or ASU. Stanford looks pretty good on a resume, but Hoffpauir is looking to study business, and ASU’s business school is as good as there is. He also wants to play baseball, and it’s hard to beat ASU out in producing major league players.
Haas Undergrad is #13 on this 2011 BusinessWeek list, while ASU’s Carey School is #77 and ‘Furd doesn’t have an undergrad business degree.
Dodgers bidding.
Peter O’Malley’s Dodgers bid backed by South Korean company
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/dodgers/2012/01/peter-omalleys-dodgers-bid-backed-by-south-korean-company.html
Peter O’Malley’s bid to buy back the Dodgers is supported by financing from the South Korean conglomerate E-Land, two people familiar with the Dodgers’ sale process said Monday.
If the O’Malley bid is successful, E-Land Chairman Song Soo Park would become a major investor in the Dodgers, one of the people said.
The ownership group also would have investors from Los Angeles. O’Malley has had discussions with Tony Ressler, a minority owner of the Milwaukee Brewers and co-founder of Los Angeles-based Ares Capital, according to a person familiar with the talks.
…
O’Malley is one of at least eight prospective owners to make last Friday’s first cut. The others include East Coast investment baron Steven Cohen, St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke and groups led by Magic Johnson, Beverly Hills developer Alan Casden, Los Angeles developer Rick Caruso and former Dodgers Manager Joe Torre, investor and civic leader Stanley Gold and the family of the late Roy Disney, and New York media investor Leo Hindery and investor Tom Barrack of Santa Monica-based Colony Capital.
My immediate reactions based on extremely minimal knowledge
O’Malley + Koreans – I could probably be on board. O’Malley brings credibility and experience, Koreans bring $$$? Could work, perhaps.
East Coast investment baron Steven Cohen – Meh. East Coast hedge fund guy. I mean, at least he’s loaded ($9+ billion net worth) and I’m sure he’s smart, but… He doesn’t profile as my ideal owner.
St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke and groups led by Magic Johnson – Hmm, Kroenke has extensive sports experience, owns a bunch of pro teams, and Magic would bring a local touch. Could be okay.
Beverly Hills developer Alan Casden, Los Angeles developer Pros: Local guy. Cons: “Only” $1.9 billion net worth (if the team is gonna sell for $1.5 billion, that means he’s probably going to be pretty highly leveraged), and he’s another real estate guy which McCourt has made me wary of.
Rick Caruso and former Dodgers Manager Joe Torre – See above. Local guy, yeah, but another developer and only $1.7 billion net worth. Also I’m not a huge Joe Torre fan. Don’t dislike the guy, but meh.
Investor and civic leader Stanley Gold and the family of the late Roy Disney – Disney brought the Angels back to prominence, so there’s that. They have local roots, hopefully they have a decent amount of money between the two partners… Could be good, maybe.
New York media investor Leo Hindery – Not sure about his assets… Seems well connected, but nothing’s jumping out at me. Meh.
Investor Tom Barrack of Santa Monica-based Colony Capital – Hmmm, assets also on the low side, so unless there are more backers, color me skeptical… Somewhat interesting profile though. He is literally friends with Rob Lowe, lol.
