Running Back D. J. Foster, Scottsdale, AZ, to select a school live!
We are right in the thick of recruiting season and what is recruiting season if not Kabuki theatre. Today, we have an opportunity to watch more theatre live when D.J. Foster out of Scottsdale makees his selection. If you don't know a lot about Foster, check this out:
Anyway, we're here to appreciate the incredible season of senior running back D.J. Foster. Does anyone truly realize just what kind of year Foster is having?
He's rushed for 2,391 yards on 158 carries. That's an average of 15.1 yards per carry and 239.1 yards per game. In last week's playoff victory over Peoria Sunrise Mountain, Foster scored 10 touchdowns - seven rushing and three receiving - and ran for 508 yards, crushing the previous single-game record of 477 yards, set by Elfrida Valley Union's Ozzie Anaya in 1985.
To put that into perspective, the Cardinals' Beanie Wells has rushed for 526 yards - and Arizona is halfway through its season.
Foster has 51 touchdowns, tieing the single-season record set by Tucson Sabino's Nathan Wize in 1997. Unless he misses the team bus, he'll shatter the record Thursday against Queen Creek in the Division III quarterfinals.
Simply put, we're watching one of the greatest single seasons in Arizona high-school history.
Cal has had a string of great running backs and Foster could be great repping the b+g. Apparently, he is so athletic, he could play any number of positions, including corner. Of course, that is dependent on whether he actually comes to Cal. He has apparently narrowed his schools down to Cal, Arizona State, and USC. Word on the street is that USC is unlikely, but the hometown Sun Devils loom large here. His selection is being webcast via FoxSportsNet Arizona.
This appears to be a direct link to the webcast itself.
After the jump, check out some highlight film. Consider this an open thread to discuss the Foster webcast and all things Cal recruiting. GO BEARS!
Here are D.J Foster's senior year highlights. Quite impressive:

I'm going to assume that he's going to U$C
and be mildly surprised to if he goes to Cal.
Which means that he will choose ASU.

It’ll be us or ASU.
still think the Sun Devils should be favored as the hometown team.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
That's always an interesting question for me
I wonder if I would rather stay near home or go away for college.
I was all set to go to UCLA and then I got accepted into Cal so it was a no brainer but I wonder if the caliber of school were the same, which one I would choose (money aside).

I was a SoCal kid, and Berkeley was perfect for me. It was a new place, where I wouldn’t be at home all the time, and I’d have space to grow up and become my own man, but it wasn’t so far away that I couldn’t come home regularly and visit my family if I wanted to.
So, not too far, not too close worked out well for me.

well, therein lies the rub
ASU and Cal are not of the same caliber academically. Plus, Gould has a proven track record of putting running backs in the NFL. And Foster’s family is supposedly pro-Cal.
unfortunately, Foster is a local hero and is under tremendous pressure to stay home and be the guy.
very tough spot for him.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
but for him
it’s not really about the academic (with all due respect). He’s looking for a ticket to the NFL.

Well, you never know what could happen. You’re always an injury away from having your career derailed. Having a degree is a fantastic insurance policy, and it seems like Foster’s a pretty decent student.

I don’t really get that. I mean, these are 17/18 year old kids we’re talking about, so it’s not surprising if they don’t have the maturity/perspective to see it….but seriously, screw what other people think. They don’t matter. This is all about where the recruit goes to college, and if it’s the spot he wants to be – that’s all that matters. There really shouldn’t be any pressure, and even if there is, the recruit making the decision should just ignore it. It’s irrelevant to his decision.

i went to high school in SoCal
really wanted to go to UCSD, but got rejected. Only other school I applied was Berkeley, and i got accepted, so I went to Berkeley.
I had a similar situation....
but for me it was Davis and Santa Barbara I didn’t get into. From my understanding, each school has a certain number of spots open. The year I applied to Santa Barbara they set a record for the number of applications they received.

I am from San Diego
I applied to the following UC’s:
UCI
UCSD
UCLA
UC-Berkeley
I got into all of them but I had to make the tough choice between Cal and UCLA. I knew I wanted to get out of SD so that eliminated UCSD, plus other than being near the beach the UCSD campus doesn’t really have shit going for it.
I really liked the UCLA campus but hated the location.
I loved the Cal campus, it being in a city and close to SF, Oakland, and the entire Bay Area, plus Cal had D-1 sports which was important to me. If Cal did not have D-1 sports I probably would have went to UCLA.
UCLA is in an awful location
forget trying to park there.

agreed
the fact that this is even a decision that Foster has had to seriously ponder is a testament to our solid recruitment of him. he’s been considered an ASU lock for a long time, right up until ASU tanked the end of the season, DE got axed, and they hired a nomad like Graham.
Foster is theirs to lose, and they very well might have thanks to Cal’s strong pitch and their bumbling at the end of the year.

ASU doesn’t have any real track record of putting RB’s into the pros, plus that new coach doesn’t really feature a RB or committment to the running game.

Don't Watch
This was a big decision, big news in Arizona. Nothing about his decision was flashy or arrogant to me. Seems like a good kid who followed his heart.
like everyone else here, I was watching in hopes he’d come to Cal. I have nothing bad to say about Foster. He did great, congrats. I’m making a societal commentary.
c-tom, look at it from a strictly mathematical standpoint. Colleges are filled with prospective students working hard to earn a degree. Qualifying for a school isn’t difficult if you have the ability, the ambition, or both. At any given time, 5% of the population is enrolled in higher education of some sort and 27% of population has at least a bachelor’s degree.
Only a fraction (I don’t have the numbers) of these students are good enough athletes to play Division I athletics. It’s much harder to qualify, as you have to hold together a decent academic performance as well as be an elite athlete.
Doesn’t it make sense that a balanced society would value a less probable combination of advantageous traits higher than those combination of traits that are more probable? Combine that with the fact that Football and Basketball are revenue generating (our culture emphasizes them higher) and you can start to see why there is a little hoopla surrounding this.
I think I would counter this way:
What is the average SAT score for the D1 athlete vs. the average SAT score of a Harvard (for example) student?
Your argument about how impressive student-athletes are is, I think, weakened when you consider that D-1 athletes have to achieve only a “minimum” qualifying score to get into many schools. Meanwhile, many students at the most selective schools have SAT scores that are incredibly high, and which deserve the same type of public praise that DJ Foster got in his moment this morning.
I once sat at a table with a Cal compliance guy name Foti Mellis. He explained to me (roughly) that Cal (all sports) can allow a certain number of athletes at the lowest academic acceptance levels, and so many more at the next lowest levels.
The office of AD, along with the various coaches of the various sports, must get together and agree upon how many of those slots each sport can use up.
So, maybe football can get 10 recruits at the lowest level. And they would use those up for the baddest 5 star recruits nation wide. Maybe Monty gets 3 of these slots, maybe baseball gets 1…. something like that. (My numbers are completely drawn out of thin air, but the concept is right, I believe.)
So, Tedford would not use up his low academic slots for a more run of the mill 3-star. If you are a 3 star athlete, you therefore need to be a better student, theoretically, than a 5 star. It’s like a drafting process, with coaches having to balance out their picks, somewhat, between athletics and academics.
This is reinforced when you consider the graduation rate rankings that the NCAA has been doing the past few years. Any coach knows they are going to be evaluated not only on W-L record, but also on graduation rate. So, in deciding who to extend scholarship offers to, you might be willing to take grad rate risk with some awesome athletes, but not with merely average athletes. …I think people often joke about how basketball coaches, who usually play no more than 10 deep but get 12 or 13 scholarships on roster, will stock the back end of their roster with guys that are going to lift the GPA and graduation rate.
To restate my point, if ESPN ranks the top 250 football or basketball players, why can’t we have a ranking of the top 250 academic students in the US? It would be something to talk about their “measurables”, which would certainly extend beyond the SAT, ACT, and GPA. It would be interesting to hear the stories and learn what they are doing. And wouldn’t it be fun to see the top academic schools try to recruit these folks publicly for solely academics?
And wouldn’t it be fun to see the top academic schools try to recruit these folks publicly for solely academics?
To answer your question….no.

Maybe instead of touting just regular academics, you should go find people getting a music or dance or theater or speech and debate scholarship and put them on TV for their commitment, instead!

FYI
Foster has always had his heart set with ASU. He had interest in Oregon but that changed when the Ducks took Marshall. Credit to Cal’s coaches for getting in it (and his family is rumored to have really liked Cal), but he’s wanted to be a Sun Devil for a long time.
We can only hope that guys like Shaq feel the same way.

wish him well!
He seems like a really good kid, and I have nothing against ASU. Just glad he didn’t go to $C :)

Duh…
Honestly, if Shaq doesn’t come to Cal, I will be depressed. Same with AA.

Since I am 1-for-1 on Predictions Today, Predictions on Armsteads and Shaq
I predict Armstead and Armond are going to land at SC. I hate to say it. I hate to say it. I hate to say it. It is the only place on the West Coast/ Pac-12 that Arik and Armond can play together. It is relatively close to home. Arik knows the score there and SC had a lock on him previously. Even if the Armstead family was originally hurt by Armond being redshirted, they seem to be a very rational family. The fact that they’ve allowed SC back into the picture doesn’t bode well for other schools.
Shaq to Cal. It just makes sense and I am pretty damn sure this is what mama wants.
Older Bro
Will not be cleared by ’SC doctors
Are you Sure?
I believe he was cleared to play 2012, but the family was upset for not playing him in 2011 because it hurt/delayed his draft potential.
Armond is transferring after classes this summer. He’s not playing at SC. If Arik wants to play with his bro, it’s going to have to be a school like Notre Dame or Auburn.

My understanding is that Armond wasn't cleared at ND
which opened his parents’ eyes to the fact that this wasn’t just a USC problem. USC has been back in it since then. But I don’t think we will get Arik in the end.

Arik is waiting on his brother's decision before he makes his own.
