BREAKING: Chip Kelly changes his mind, tells a highly placed UO source: "I'm staying."
Phil Knight has apparently thwarted Esteban Sarkisiano at the eleventh hour.
Hope you've enjoyed the last bizarre day in the most bizarre week ever on CGB. Until next week.

sigh ... i was enjoying the schadenfreude
we’re back to being the only team with major “doom.”
What a crazy night for Oregon and their fans
I wonder why Chip had his change of heart.

Phil Knight made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Could have been money I suppose
I still think Tampa could have matched anything Oregon offered, maybe Chip just got cold feet with the thought of going to the NFL.

or it's a negotiating ploy with tampa
to get more control, or money, or something.

I suppose it won’t be over until Chip does a press conference.

Or he wanted to stay at Oregon all along
But was using the Tampa Bay offer to get a raise.

You’re forgetting boosters, which would mean Uncle Phil, which means he can double, triple, quadruple whatever Chip’s getting from TB.

Phil to Chip: you get to fuck Tosh's boat.

It would be insane if Chip was pulling down 10 million a year as the HC at Oregon.
I’m not saying it couldn’t happen, just that it would be ridiculous.

I went into the wrong profession, I should have been a CFB coach
Where even being and average coach will get you a 500k contract at UW.

Ya know, maybe not
$10 mil for a coach that gets to BCS bowls almost every year (let’s say 4 out of 5 despite that not being the case currently, where he’s at 100% now). what is the value of the marketing there? of the merchandise? UofO has already seen record enrollment and massive alumni donations in the last few years that are almost entirely because of the football program. How much is that worth?
Is it worth $10 million?
I could see a very reasonable answer yes to that.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
You’re forgetting boosters, which would mean Uncle Phil..
Of course Knight could afford to pay anyone just about anything but isn’t all ‘booster’ money included in a coach’s listed salary, at least at public schools? This keeps floating around with all the new hires as if there are common off book payments that inflate the listed salaries? I know that most of all the salary comes from private sources but isn’t the total released by the school the actual total?
Yes
Contracts are public information and any extra payments would be in them and noted. Secret hidden deals would be illegal.
Nick Saban contract as an example
You can see in the contract how he is required to itemize all the income he makes each year because of football.(endorsements or other payouts) That info would be part of the salary charts that places like USA Today put out.
This is only true for public school.

About pre-LOI coaching changes...
Presuming Oregon offered Kelly more money to stay I wonder how much more they the timing costs them? I think he was scheduled to make ~$3.5M next season. If they upped that to $4.5 or $5M, would they have paid that in December? Two weeks ago? If an assistant like Tosh can upend a recruiting class by leaving in mid January you’ve got to think losing Kelly and probably a decent chunk of the staff would have decimated Oregon’s class a week out from LOI day. An attractive new hire would have the school over a barrel, too. Could schools consider adding steeply escalating buyouts to contracts for January departures?
Kelly had a $3.5m dollar buyout on his contract
No expected him to get offered $7m per year, so that buy out may increase even more
It's still all from "sources"
both sides of this story.
We won’t know til Chip makes a real statement. It’s reported he didn’t show for scheduled recruit visits today.
But if he does leave, I would bet that Cal and UW, maybe even USC and UCLA would be bigtime beneficaries of some good recruits de-commiting from the Oregon class.
right, but that buyout was a flat $3.5M, December 15th, January 2 or today but the blow to your program would have been worse the later it got. There’s obviously no good time for a coach to leave but late January would seem to give a college coach tremendous leverage. Maybe $3M before Jan. 1, $4M between Jan. 1 and 15 and $5M after that? I’m sure there’s some unintended consequence I’m not considering but LOI day seems to make CFB contracts unique.
recruits beware
Chippy won’t be there long and: no chippy offense, no duck domination!
Kelly's technique is...magnificent.
When trolled across the neck, a sound like wailing winter winds is heard, they say. I’d always hoped to troll someone like that someone like that some day… to hear that sound! But to have it happen to my own neck is… ridiculous.

So much for the rumors of impending sanctions at UO
Or maybe Chip is going to weather the storm instead of running for the cash grab? Either way, good for Oregon.
I’d like to get a couple more shots at beating them with Chip in place, we haven’t been too far off even with their emergence as a national power.
And ATQ handled this pretty well, considering. Seems to be much more fun to go off the deep end like at CGB, but that is just one Middle-Aged-Blue’s assessment.

It nearly did
a new thread had to be started because the first one was getting slowed up by too many comments
Well, they live in Oregon, so: yes.

We had the Suffering
After that, losing the most successful coach in school history after we won the rose bowl for the first time in 95 years? It’s not so bad. Kinda tickles.

There's one thing I dont hear often from opposing fans about us at ATQ
I was astounded at the number of comments in such a short period of time. More than 2000 comments in just a few hours, thats something more seen here than atq. However, now that he’s staying, we can all go back to how Cal got screwed over by the fuskies and talk about our mutual hatred from them
Well, there were several Cal folks hanging out, and we do like to flap our gums…

Might have been true a couple years ago, but we’ll fill up a thread pretty quickly nowadays.
