I can tell you off the bat that no, it does not work in the NFL. It’s entirely dependent on not only all your players being faster than the defense, but the defense not knowing how to react. Like the wildcat, it feeds off mistakes that most veteran players will not make.

by mrjpark on Jan 22, 2012 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

Please, by all means, elaborate.

Because this looks suspiciously like unsubstantiated garbage.

by AERose on Jan 22, 2012 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

The Oregon spread option excels at the college level of ball because the defenses generally don’t have the players or the experience to run a disciplined enough defense to stop the offense. Defenses in the NFL are infinitely faster, stronger, and “smarter”. Yes, it’s “unsubstantiated”, but mostly because whenever someone tries to run an offense like this in the NFL, they fail miserably. You can fit in a spread option offense to switch tempos and it will work amazingly, but going out there and essentially running the same 3-5 plays over and over depending on what you see isn’t going to work because eventually, they’re just not going to fall for yours hit. I exaggerated a bit, but whatever.

by mrjpark on Jan 22, 2012 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

Look at what Cal was able to do with our defense a couple years ago. We had an alright secondary, but our front seven was BEASTLY. You shut down their lanes and stick to your roles, and they can’t do anything.

by mrjpark on Jan 22, 2012 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

You're forgetting that in order to shut them down we had to take a huge gamble.

We left our defensive backs in straight up man coverage without safety help the entire game. In most situations that would be suicide, but Oregon’s wide receivers weren’t very good so we got away with it.

"Let me tell you a story. I was a political prisoner for two years. The instant I was released I ran to McDonald's. I had a Big Mac and a Coke.

by AERose on Jan 22, 2012 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

I think Chip has a bigger playbook than he lets on. He just uses the one he has at Oregon because that’s the one that works for his players.

Almost every team in the league uses spread formations and schemes. What’ll be interesting is how well the up-tempo schemes will work (i.e. a continuous two-minute drill). Could be disastrous, could be exciting. Who knows?

by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 22, 2012 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not referring to a spread offense, but what Chip Kelley specifically runs: the spread option. They’re two VERY different things.

by mrjpark on Jan 22, 2012 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, no. Chip is not going to run the spread option in the NFL as his base play unless he plans on signing ten QBs.

by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 22, 2012 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

but mostly because whenever someone tries to run an offense like this in the NFL, they fail miserably.

One data point is a trend!

Look, I’m not going to act like there wouldn’t be some major impediments to running the spread option in the NFL (the whole quarterback situation would kill it right off the bat if anyone seriously tried it), but comparing it to the Wildcat (which is limited by the fact that there’s no legitimate passing threat more than anything) verges on the same I-form fetishization that inspired the most insipid phrase in all of football: “gimmick offense.”

Your conclusion that the option offense consists of “3-5 plays” is completely off base. If Chip Kelly has a simplified playbook, it’s because he has severe time constraints in implementing his offense like every other college coach. There are millions of different variations on the option offense that an NFL team could adopt. That’s not an issue.

The bit about defenses being smarter and faster in the NFL is true up to a point, but Oregon doesn’t send offensive linemen to the league and somehow they still end up getting the best of USC’s freak linemen and linebackers.

I think the idea of a quarterback running in the NFL 10-15 plays a day has never been seriously tried because of the inherent risk it would place on their careers. It’d be interesting to see though!

by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 22, 2012 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

It's a kind of catch-22.

The nature of defense in the NFL is such that you’re going to need to pass to move the chains, but if your quarterback was worth a damn at passing to begin with, why do you have him running the option? (Hi Tebow!)

Well, the big issue that Oregon took advantage of is that most college defenses (particularly in the Pac-12) aren’t that fast, and more importantly aren’t disciplined.

NFL defenses are as fast and as disciplined as their offensive counterparts. It’ll be a challenge for Chip if he runs the same offense in the league.

by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 22, 2012 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

To be fair, Oregon's offensive players haven't been particularly awe-inspiring w/r/t athleticism

with the obvious exception of the running backs.

The only real way this clearly not a good thing

…is if they lure Chris Petersen out of Boise. That’s the only coach I can think of that is clearly on par with Kelly and that might be available, and Uncle Phil has the money to do it.

I can't see Patterson leaving after TCU just got into the Big 12

Also as you stated, it doesn’t seem like a good cultural fit for him.

by SDBear on Jan 22, 2012 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

I don't understand why Oregon would want Peterson, he doesn't seem like a spread guy

So they would probably have to change things up. I would think Oregon would want to keep Chips offense.

by SDBear on Jan 22, 2012 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Evidently you haven't actually watched TCU play.

They’re a single back shotgun offense, through and through.

And in any case if the Oregon AD/Phil Knight had any sense, they’d go for the best coach available to win consistently over the next five-ten years, not just someone who’s going to win until Kelly’s players all graduate.

Here we go…

Who becomes a candidate if Kelly does leave? The offensive and defensive coordinators in Eugene, Mark Helfrich and Nick Allioti, probably don’t get this job. I can’t see Mike Bellotti returning, especially given that he’s going to be measured against Kelly.

So where does that leave Oregon?

Jeff Tedford? Tony Dungy? Boise State’s Chris Petersen? A source deeply connected with the Ducks athletic department mentioned all three to me after the Kelly confirmation was posted today.

No need to mention rumors

But Chip’s leaving, along with Tosh and Wilcox, are all excellent case studies for why it’s risky to pick a school to go play for a young hotshot coach, because chances are he’ll get whisked away to bigger and brighter things. It really makes a good case for a guy like Tedford, who by all appearances is staying at Cal until he retires or gets fired. He had his big chances to leave as a young hotshot several years ago and decided to stay. I thiink the fact that he’s the dean of Pac-12 coaches and seems truly committed to Cal gives him a lot of credibility in the face of recent events.

I agree the first play was a bit flukish, although once Williams opted to not field the kick, he shouldn’t have been nearly so close to the bouncing ball.

But on the second fumble, that was all on Williams. Not only did he have the ball in the wrong arm, but he had, what, maybe two points of contact? High-school coaches across the country are going to have a field day with that footage: how not to carry a football.

I don't want to second guess recruits (particularly since I have not read said tweet)

But wouldn’t it at least make sense to wait to talk to Cal’s new wide receiver’s coach before making that decision. Regardless of his decision, I wish him the best of luck, except against Cal.

He already visited Cal on Dec. 9

And I believe he talked to Chandler (he talked to all the WRs) before leaving for UW.

I think Chandler might come to Payton’s house on an in-home. We’ll see.

also

3 minutes after Payton tweeted “Lets just say its a done deal now” he also tweeted “Oregon smh… Whose gonna replace?” and “the pac 12 is wide open now”

So from the context, he could be referring to Chip Kelly’s signing with Tampa Bay as a done deal.

Chip Kelly to Bucks confirmed by the Register Guard (Eugene paper)
University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly has reached an agreement to become the head coach of NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a highly placed UO athletic department source told The Register-Guard.

"It’s done," the source said Sunday night.

Changing his mind?
University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly told a highly placed UO source late Sunday night that he has reversed course and decided to turn down an offer from the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. "It’s done," the source said.

An hour later, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: "I’m staying."
