And then there was one: With the Patriots' Andre Carter out with an injury, Shane Vereen is the only Cal football alum left with a chance to play in the Super Bowl this season.
It is the NFL's version of the Final Four. The AFC and NFC championship games are being contested today. Who will be the winners and Super Bowl XLVI combatants? Will it be Patriots-Giants? Patriots-49ers? Ravens-49ers? Or Ravens-Giants in the long awaited rematch of Super Bowl XXXV?
Personally, yours truly is hoping for Patriots-49ers. Shane Vereen in the Super Bowl against my favorite professional football team? Yes please. Now that I've said that, I've probably talked the Juju into striking me down and sticking it to me with Ravens-Giants.

Was reminded of something today
In the 1995 NFL Draft, the 49ers had the 30th pick (having won the Super Bowl the previous season). The Niners traded up to the 10th pick, also giving up a 3rd and 4th round pick and their 1st round pick in 1996. The 49ers selected WR J.J. Stokes.
Meanwhile, the next year, with that 1996 1st round pick obtained from the Niners, the Baltimore Ravens selected a guy named Ray Lewis.

I had been hard on Fangio early in the year about not adjusting his in-game stretegy. Given you all are my bretheren, I’ll admit I was at least partially wrong, as he was still teaching his system to the D, and had clearly not had the benefit of Aldon getting into his comfort zone. So, I do give a hats off to Fangio, who has really shown me he had a season long plan and stuck to it, even when it hurt early in the year sometimes.

Half Thoughts
IMO, Harbaugh made two big mistakes. The trick play in the elements, stalled drive. Not sticking with the run when Gore and the OL had a dominant streak going. Granted he went play action for a 20 yarder down the gut, which is not a terrible call, but the run was rolling up the Giants at the time and the D had been spending too much time on the field. He could have chewed up some clock and probably gotten a decent field goal attempt.
Seriously, the quick strike is great and all, but when coupled with all the 3 and outs, the D will be dead men walking come the 4th quarter. Heck, they looked that way for the last drive by the Giants. One more TO, and Eli probably gets in the end zone.
