Breaking: Cal Hires Todd Howard as Defensive Line Coach
The Bears coaching staff has filled Lupoi's spot with a familiar face in the Pac-12 coaching ranks: Todd Howard.
Jeff Tedford sent out a press release this afternoon.
"I'm excited to have Todd Howard as our defensive line coach," Tedford said. "He has a tremendous amount of experience as both a coach and player at the NFL and collegiate level. We've had an opportunity to play against several of the teams he has coached in the past, and I've always been impressed by the way his defensive line has played. He is also consistent with what we stand for at Cal and will be an excellent mentor to our student-athletes athletically, academically and socially."
"This is an outstanding opportunity for me to work with Jeff Tedford and the Cal football program," Howard said. "Cal teams always play hard and are well coached, and I believe that my coaching experience and knowledge will be an asset to the program. I am familiar with this conference and coaching the defensive line at this level."
In the remainder of this post we will take a look at some of Howard's notable accomplishments and stats.
All stats are courtesy of the aforementioned press release and cfbstats.com

I am actually glad he got a job.
Leach was not the type of coach to keep the original crew.

Yeah, I'm glad he found a home
He did good things with the little he had at WSU. Would’ve liked to see Leach retain him, but it wasn’t to be.
It's up there now
After putting this together, I think he has a pretty solid resume.

I really have no context for what is a good resume to have for a DL coach. Tosh had little on his resume before he was hired, whereas Marshall (OL, obvi) had an extensive resume. I suppose I’ll be neutral on this until proven otherwise.

I think the Ucla part looks solid – can’t tell much from one year at WSU.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
From the student section it looked like the D-line was getting more pressure on the O-line
then they had in the past few seasons (granted my previous exposure to WSU games was the few that made TV).

Hmmm..
Don’t know much about him. I know he was hired with Dorrell’s staff and stayed on with Slick Rick. He was fired about a year ago, but Rick was moving that defense in a whaky direction. Can’t say much about his one year at Wassu either. Who has he developed worth mentioning so far(not to sound sarcastic, I’ve only been web surfing for two minutes).
We were also recruiting Owa pretty heavily

His DLs at both UCLA and Jacksonville played well.

I like that he has a lot coaching experience in the PAC 12 and that he might have coaching connections in both SoCal and the PNW.
He knows what this conference is about and is very familiar with the various teams and offenses that he will be facing in the coming years.
I’m actually really excited for this hire.

Well I am still optimistic with this hire.
Not all the stats from his previous stops were great but how much of that was due to lack of talent (WSU) and lack of offensive production/TO’s putting the defense into bad situations (UCLA and Craft, WSU in general)

On paper, I like this hire
Howard was an accomplished player and has tons of college and NFL coaching experience. He knows the conference. He has coached some very good players at the college level, meaning he has either recruited well or coached ’em up well — or both.
Welcome, Coach Howard.

It should be noted that UCLA's run defense looked a lot worse this season
D-line just didn’t get up for a lot of games.
Of course they’ve had these issues the past few years, but UCLA was a tough team to beat those three years with the run game. We relied mostly on offensive derp to win those contests.
by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 21, 2012 5:49 PM PST reply actions
Yep and Jones, Owa, and Marsh
Never lived up to the preseason hype at all. Owa was a complete ghost and did not improve upon his first season. Although Marsh had a better season than Owa he didn’t really improve that much as well this season.
Jones did not come close to at all to meeting preseason expectations.

Price destroyed our O-line in '09
The running game couldn’t do anything when Price was playing (except for Best’s absolutely ridiculous 93 yard TD). Most of our yardage on the ground came when Price was not on the field.

Seattle Times Report: Lupoi earning $350K, NOT $500K+
Funny how many inaccurate statements have been portrayed as fact by Cal bloggers.
(Oh, and Kisseau is earning $350K, NOT $800K.)
So, didn’t we all read that Cal offered Lupoi ~$350K?
This MAKES the case that he "went for the money" pointless.
Yet… IT CERTAINLY SHOWS HOW BADLY Lupoi wanted out from under Tedford.
Lupoi WALKED for roughly the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY that Cal offered.
Man, THAT must REALLY sting Bear fans.
Oh, and those are just the facts.
That’s just the official numbers though, right? Not counting any other payments or inducements made by UW donors. Officially, Tedford doesn’t get paid very much either directly by the university.

Oh... now the State, with its disclosure laws, is lying.
Using your logic, Lupoi could have – EASILY – been making $500K+ at Cal. I mean, who knows what incentives, kickbacks and donations he was given?
God, this looks worse, by the day, for Cal.
A bunch of bitter, left-at-the-dance fanatics, who created their own ‘facts’ to slime/smear a guy on the way out the door.
Well, don’t worry… I doubt Lupoi will be back for a visit, let alone seeking his next job offer in 3 years after he kills it at UW.
I’ll make this really clear because apparently you can’t read very well: There is money that is paid officially by the university, which they have to report, and there also may be money paid by donors, which they don’t have to report. So, it’s not clear that the official numbers are the full story.
Either way, I’m over it. I’m optimistic about the guy we got, and I could not give less of a flying fuck if To$h “kills it” or whatever the hell he does in Seattle.

Who cares how much he makes really? If anything, most Cal fans are bothered by the ethics violations in Shaq’s recruiting than Tosh leaving for more money. I can understand leaving for more money, but it’s the vindictive way in which he did it that bothers me the most.

The problem we have is with ethics not payscale
There will be a whole load of stuff coming out no doubt. Probably no earlier than 2/1.
It will be interesting to hear if the perks are revealed or kept private.
It will also be interesting to hear what the official sources report on the record about how things went down.
Cal has a full slate of coaches as does Uw. Have to wait to see how it all pans out.

According to some comments of twitter
It looks like Armstead has a previous relationship with Howard. Hopefully that’s a good sign.

Im not really sure how he will turn out at Cal
but he seems to have coached up a solid DL play at UCLA.
Im not sure how he will appeal to the recruits such as Armstead, but Im glad we have a DL coach now.
Now we can start recruiting again.
I’ve read he at least has a connection to Armstead. Was one the first to offer him when he was at UCLA.

side note
I just got home and didn’t spend any time on the basketball game thread today, so Im not sure if it was already discussed, but Bryan Anger punted 3 times for 180 yards. Thats an average of 60 yards !!!!!! WOW.
A way to represent our university. Go Anger!

Kicking specialists do not get a lot of notice at all-star game practices, but it’s been difficult to ignore the thump of the ball coming off the foot of California punter Bryan Anger. The 6-foot-3 1/2, 203-pound Golden Bear gets excellent hang time and distance on nearly every kick and his punts inside the 10-yard line bounced to the side or backward with regularity. Because Cal used a lot of rugby kicks this year as a change-up and due to protection issues (Anger’s delivery speed is not a problem), scouts wanted to see him boot the ball consistently this week. One reason scouts don’t put a lot of weight on practices for specialists, however, is lack of rush coming their way. But in a specialist class that isn’t, well, special, Anger’s leg strength stands out.

Do kickers get drafted?

Well, now that Al Davis is dead...
But yeah, exceptional kickers and punters sometimes get drafted. Jason Hanson, who kicks for the Lions, was drafted in the second round (which actually worked out pretty well for Detroit considering he’s been around for 20 years).

Hey, don’t knock Al for that, it was one of the greatest picks the Raiders have ever made.

Andy Lee was a 5th or 6th rd pick when the Niners really sucked.
Doug Brien was drafted in the 1st rd, no?

Kickers getting drafted is fairly common. For punters, it’s 1-2 max in the very end rounds.

I meant kickers/punters in general, not just placekickers. I doubt Tavecchio actually gets drafted, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he catches on with a team somewhere…

I would be extremely surprised if Giorgio catches on with a team. He had a nice season for Cal, but he just isn’t NFL caliber. Too many guys out there with stronger legs that are more reliable/consistent.
by Missing Barry on Jan 23, 2012 9:04 AM PST up reply actions
Are there that many guys out there? I don’t recall that many outstanding senior NCAA kickers with better senior seasons… OTOH, kickers have long careers if they’re good, so maybe there are aren’t that many vacancies in the first place. And yeah, Giorgio doesn’t have the biggest leg out there. Perhaps you’re right.

Justin Bethel (the guy on Presby that caused us problems during that game) made it to the Shrine Game too

I think London Fletcher (John Carroll Univ.), Marcellus Wiley (Columbia Univ.), Terrell Owens (Chattanooga), Donald Driver (Alcorn State), Michael Strahan (Texas Southern), Robert Mathis (Alabama A&M), and Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois), among others, would agree.

Todd Howard, you say?
Is he a cousin of Moe, Curly, and Shemp?
If so, I am so down with this hire.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
He's an actor TOO?
How is he going to have time for us when he also goaltends for Everton?
double fail
oh well, now I have banned myself for the rest of the day. Have a great rest of weekend everyone.
