"You never want to take away their dream. They believe they can become the next Jerry Rice, the next DeSean Jackson. There’s also a price to pay and that’s the classroom. You have to have communication with these young men. Not only are you their technician, but also a friend."

Do you have the passion and drive at this point to contribute on the recruiting side?

"The recruiting side is where I want to be. Recruiting is a team effort. It takes the entire coaching staff. I have no problem in doing that. First of all, I’m a team player. I’m used to evaluating talent. That’s all you do on the pro level when the season’s over. Because I have this tremendous competitiveness about me, I want this program to be the best not only in the Pac-12 but in the entire country. It starts with the people you bring in here. They’re the very foundation."

Talk about your work in recent years coaching elite-level high school prospects and even younger players with Football University:

"Sometimes people get caught up in the hype that this guy played pro football. But the things I’m able to teach I didn’t read about. It’s my true life experience. I do talk about not just the good things, but the things I had to learn. I wasn’t born with the greatest gifts in the world. I had to work at it. Football is just as much mental as it is physical. It goes back to becoming a student of the game."

How do you feel about the modern tools of recruiting . . . social media, Twitter, Facebook?

"The digital age of communication with people is huge. We see it in politics and, more importantly, we see it in football. At the end of the day, it’s about being able to sit down in front of a young man and his family and talk about the game of life. Not do it on the phone, not text him `Hello.’ Let them hear that come out of your mouth instead of reading it. There’s a tremendous difference. I can respect (social media). But the people who take advantage of the key recruiting aspects, they do it in person."

Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke said the right to sell beer must be enshrined in a World Cup law the Brazilian Congress is considering.

Alcoholic drinks are currently banned at Brazilian stadiums and the country’s health minister has urged Congress to maintain the ban in the new law.

Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor.

Mr Valcke is visiting Brazil to press for progress on the much-delayed World Cup law.
’Won’t negotiate’

Fifa has become frustrated because voting on the legislation has been held up in Congress by the dispute over alcohol sales.

The Brazilian government has also failed to resolve differences with Fifa over cut-price tickets for students and senior citizens, and demands for sponsors of the World Cup to have their trademarks protected.

In remarks to journalists in Rio de Janeiro, Mr Valcke sounded frustrated with Brazilian officials.

“Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we’re going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that’s something we won’t negotiate,” he said.

“The fact that we have the right to sell beer has to be a part of the law.”

Alcohol was banned at Brazilian football matches in 2003 as part of attempts to tackle violence between rival football fans.

The profile of World Cup supporters will be radically different from that of domestic Brazilian football, where violence is fuelled by club rivalries.

But this is not about violence, or even beer. It is about sovereignty.

Fifa makes all sorts of demands on a World Cup host nation, from tax waivers to the necessity to provide stadiums, transport and hotel infra-structure – controversial issues in the developing world, where there are so many claims on the public purse.

Largely because of poor domestic organisation, the costs of staging the tournament are spiralling. But one area where Brazil’s government can flex its muscles is that of sovereignty – which is why beer sales and ticket prices, governed by local law, are now the front line in the tension between Brazil and Fifa.

UCSF ponders a split from state university system

Yet UCSF is attached like Velcro to the other campuses, required to spend millions of dollars to help support them and send officials to countless meetings where students protest rising tuition and regents debate educational policy.

At Thursday’s meeting at UC Riverside, UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann told the regents, delicately, that she wants out.

Under her proposal, UCSF’s medical school, hospital, clinics and research facilities would remain a public university connected to UC, the chancellor assured the regents. But the tendrils connecting the two entities should be thinner than they are today.

Desmond-Hellmann said she envisions a relationship like those of UC Hastings College of the Law, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which contract with UC for health and pension services. While ultimately accountable to the regents, they are autonomous with their own boards of directors.

The print edition, out Feb. 2 for $19.99, is an oversize, color-saturated book. The digital version, which will be launched simultaneously for $9.99 in Apple’s app and iTunes stores, allows readers to enlarge images, flip through photo albums, watch video clips, listen to the characters’ favorite songs and read their instant messages. Readers can even change the order of the story by shuffling the pages, re-creating it as a custom version.

Enhanced e-books—which have multimedia features such as audio, video, pop-up graphics, 3-D images and animation—are being touted as the next frontier in the digital-books landscape. The explosive growth of e-book sales, coupled with the rapid adoption of iPads, Nook Tablets and Kindle Fires, has prompted publishers to experiment with new types of interactive books. Many in the industry will be watching closely to see whether “Chopsticks” becomes a literary trailblazer that ushers in a new species of e-book, or a cautionary tale of an elaborate flop.
