Tosh's Short Term Effect on Recruiting
Did anyone see this? It's from the Husky Football Blog. Apparently, Garnett is one of the highest ranked HS players in WA state... Hopefully, other recruits will feel the same way about Lupoi being fake.
"Another popular question in the days since the hiring of Tosh Lupoi and some of the other new assistants is whether the Huskies could get back in the hunt for Josh Garnett. Mason Kelley talked to Garnett today and found out the answer, which isn't a happy one for UW fans as Garnett said he hasn't changed his mind and isn't considering UW.
Asked about UW's hiring of Lupoi, Garnett said:
"I thought it was weird at first, just because Tosh was one of the guys who I never thought would move schools, because he would always preach the Cal-Berkeley pride and how he would never leave there and how he just loves Cal and how he wished I could be a part of Cal's family. I saw him at the Under-Armour game and he was still preaching that stuff. He moves, all of a sudden, up to Washington and I thought it was just strange for his character. A job opportunity came about. It's a business, so he had to make a business decision."
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Also from Kenneth Walker's Dad

"My dad was a little bothered I think. He said he wished Tosh had told us earlier what was going on and didn’t get how he could sell another program so fast after being with Cal for so long. It’s definitely a weird situation and I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty confused right now. I feel like I’m basically having to start all over again but I have a visit set up for (Jan. 27) and we’ll see how it goes."
Tosh who?

I do think that this is going ot affect his ability to recruit. He was Mr. Cal. Now his credibiliy has suffered. Thanks for the info, Bear53!

short term, I think you’re right. The next recruiting cycle, perhaps, I think he can revamp his approach and recruits will not know or care about the Cal/UW mess.
Unless it keeps getting discussed. I don’t think Tedford would talk ill of anyone.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

this has me thinking
i don’t understand the kids that say their biggest draw to Cal was Tosh, yet the decommit and don’t go to Washington. I mean, if you are only coming to Cal because of Tosh, then wouldn’t that mean you now only intend to follow him to Washington? I don’t get why a kid would ditch Cal for 1 coach, then end up at UCLA or Oregon or Furd.

Because in the minds of those kids even with Tosh they think UW still sucks, and would rather go to another school than have to tolerate that place.
Or, maybe because after meeting Sarksleazian, they just feel like they really need to take a shower.
I’m just guessing, of course.

My guess is that recruits really connected with the guy and his message about how Cal was all about family. When he left, they realized that everything a lot of words were just an act… or at least couldn’t be trusted if he put $ over “family”. At that point, recruits don’t want to follow him anywhere because they don’t trust him.
I’ve watched this week go by and the shit storm Lupoi has created. Very real but, I don’t get the order of magnitude. Student-athletes come to Cal because it’s Cal. If they are coming due to the charisma of a single line coach, probably not a fit anyway.
I would argue the spike in the quality of our recent recruits is due to Student athletes recognizing, in this economy, the value of a degree from Cal. That’s what separates Cal from the football schools and the box of rocks kids they end up with. Prolly naive of me but it makes me feel good.
The other part I don’t get is Lupoi tripled his salary. Hello. Lotto ticket, life changer. $165,000 per year in the Bay Area has you, with a family, living in Tracey. Good luck dude, have a nice life…..Poof.
For the kids, Cal sells itself or it doesn’t. Pretty sure all on a blog like this can agree on that.

Washington Recruits
My working hypothesis is that Tosh will make much more of an impact with local recruits inside the State of Washington. There are no data yet to backup my hypothesis though as Garnett, Banner, Russell, and Walker Williams are all likely to be heading elsewhere.
