Cal hires Wes Chandler as new WR coach
RGBearTerritory Ryan Gorcey
#Cal has hired Wes Chandler as its new WR coach, according to a well-placed source. Big get for the Bears.
This was the All Pro WR for the Chargers back with Dan Fouts...has coached in NFL for Dallas, Cleveland etc.
EDIT by Ohio Bear:
Most recently, Chandler was on the faculty of Football University. See his bio there
In addition to his NFL assistant coaching experience and his experience working with receivers at FBU, Chandler was a head coach in NFL Europe and an offensive coordinator in the UFL.

Initial reaction: awesome! First question: can he coach and how are his 1/3 play-calling skills?

So as a Cal fan I love this hire.
However, I am a bit concerned these young kids aren’t going to know much about his NFL career but their parents should!

Yup. Wes Chandler was a name from my undergraduate days as a youngster at Cal--in 1982!
"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is
research."
Not all that pleased so far...
…why not Collins? Was that offer to go to Buffalo something we couldn’t compete with?
Based upon what I read earlier about Collins, he seemed to have better relationships with a number of the recruits still thinking about coming to Cal.
Granted, both Chandler and Collins both work at Football University, but I’ve yet to read anything that tells us that this could save 1 or 2 recruits we might have lost.
Likely, my priorities are screwed up; this should be about whether he can coach. But given the events this week, I’d rather worry about recruiting at this point.
I would like this hire better though, if we brought in a Geoff MacArthur on to the staff with him.
"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is

I’m worried about Payton too. But we have many high profile WRs in this year’s class. So I would worry about his coaching abilities and recruiting in coming years more than about one or two WRs in this year’s class.
But, to paraphrase an old ESPN commercial, he's, like, 300 years old!
I feel like we just hired Yoda. The old one from the good set of movies, not the cool one who can do flips and shit in the bad set of movies…

And I’m throwing a tantrum like my 4-year-old daughter, because I really want to keep Jordan Payton.

Cal cannot make important decisions about the future of its program solely to make one18-year-old happy.

THIS
I’d hate to commit to a coach for JUST to keep 1 recruit. I’d rather bring in a top quality guy that will teach, develop, and recruit new WRs the next cycle. If Payton is going to get butthurt about losing Lupoi and not hiring a guy he knows, then frankly, I’d lose little sleep about him going elsewhere. I WANT these kids to like Cal and contribute to the program, but I don’t think we should need to twist their arms
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
the guy has major HC experience, major OC experience, and several stints as a WR coach in the NFL. And he has the same ties to the So Cal recruits as Collins does. His resume compared to collins is not even in the same league. who gives a crap whether he’s young or not.

extremely shortsighted. the only guy we stand to lose is possibly payton. read up a little about chandler (not his playing career) but about his coaching career. We chose chandler over collins. this was a slam dunk hire considering the circumstances.
Actually, the slam dunk hire will come, if and when we can close on a D-Line coach. And, so far, I’ve heard no names. Not even any names who played for Don Coryell in San Diego.

Likely because JT knew Coach K may leave and had put out some feelers over the last week. Tosh was a surprise 2 days ago and he’s starting from scratch. Nice job Coach. Go Bears.
by MV Bear on Jan 18, 2012 9:02 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Strategically
This is the order I would do it in anyway.
I think our DL prospects are tougher to keep due to the guys who were 1) so close to Tosh esp as position coach and 2) still deciding between schools.
Plus WR is more of an immediate need for us. Even if we don’t get any DL this year, we’ll still be all good with our returning players plus monster recruiting last year.

I totally agree with this. Cal should not hire a coach just to bring in one or two recruits. The first priority should be to hire the coach they think will do the best job as a coach. If he can bring in some players, that would be a great bonus. But there isn’t even a guarantee that the recruits would come if Collins was hired, and then you don’t have either the recruits or the coach you thought was best. (This is not intended as a knock on Collins. I have no idea about the relative abilities of these coaches. But I have to trust that Tedford does.)

Considering how we all tend to question Tedford prior to the outbreak of Lupoi,
I would feel better about this, as I noted above, if we somehow got a Chase Lyman or Geoff MacArthur included on our staff somehow.
Basically, I want us to homegrow another Tosh, but without the baggage of Cramp gate.

Well, you seemed to be saying that we should hire Collins solely because he might be able to bring in Payton, rather than because he would be a better coach or even a better recruiter, long-term. That’s what I disagree with.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Understood. I know I'm getting caught up in the "17-year-olds only like shiny new things" sort-of thinking...
As California Pete shared in an earlier thread, there’s an “age-ism” that’s taking place that I worry about in myself. I like it when the coaches are actually younger than I am. Tedford’s age is showing with this hire, IMHO…
Honestly, instead of a Tosh Lupoi, former Cal player on the staff, I’d love to see a whole slew of former Cal players: Geoff or Chase coaching the receivers, Hardy or Zach the linebackers, and Andre Carter working with the D-Line, that sort of thing. All guys who are still close enough that they too could play X-box with the players they’re coaching and recruiting.
Next question: How much are we paying him?

Yeah, I don't really think people respect coaching as a skill set that not everyone possesses.
Also the fact that not every former player wants to coach, or coach at the college level.

You really are determined to come up with every negative thing possible, aren’t you? Even when they make no sense. A player is selected to the pro bowl because he is a great player. But football is a team game and no single player, no matter how great, can make it to the Super Bowl unless he has the good fortune to be on a great team. If anybody is going to understand that very elementary concept, it is going to be guys who actually play football.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Admittedly, the Pro Bowl was once an arena for the best of the best. Of late, it has devolved into a poor exhibition, with many of the top players skipping it where they can.
And yes, Chandler was on great teams, but also teams that had the misfortune of running into match-up issues against teams in the AFC title game. Not to digress, but I think the snake-bit aspect of those Charger teams works into a narrative comparable to the relative frustration of being a Cal fan.
For instance, how would the 1982 Super Bowl have looked had the Chargers played the Niners, rather than the Bengals? (Especially, given that the Chargers had to play in that hellishly cold stadium in Cincy that day of the AFC championship…)
But all that having been said, I’m not sold on this hire right now. It’s my opinion and my years as a Cal fan has taught me not to piss off the Woofing Gods until we know more as to how this works out. So, my natural inclination is to think the worst immediately, hoping the opposite result would be had. I would have preferred Collins, to be honest, but others disagree. That’s a difference that, I think, is one discussion that I’ve yet to see hashed out in this thread. (Full Disclosure: I also didn’t think Sofele would work out this year, to be honest, and I was happy to be spectacularly wrong on that account.)
I want to be wrong here, too. And I hope that I am. But I also want to howl at the moon, and hope against hope that we can, somehow, hold on to the kids that Lupoi is trying to peddle to Washington. And if that means we hire an assistant purely on the basis to screw them and thier recruiting gambit, then we should.
And yes, I’ve admitted I’m short-sighted with this view. Chandler may well be able to accomplish what Collins might have done, and for our sakes, go even further. While in another thread, I was hoping we move on from this, and work for next year, the talk about Collins had me excited about maybe saving a significant chunk of the WRs in this year’s class. That Wes Chandler seemed so out of the blue was an honest surprise. And again, I worry about being excited about a hire who is around my age, and particularly one who has not shown a significant resume of staying in one place for very long. In terms of trying to sell that idea of continuity, that is a legitimate consideration, in addition to his playing career and its accolades.
I’m sorry. I can’t see the overwhelming excitement about this hire. I feel that he’s a shiny thing for the alumni who remember Air Coryell, but not necessarily the shiny thing for the kids we’re gonna have him immediately trying to bring in. Again, my opinion. I know it runs against the tide of the current thread, so I will take my punishment accordingly.

You’ve missed the point. You are certainly entitled to your opinion about whether this is a good hire or a bad hire. But the reasons you have come up with so far have had nothing to do with whether Chandler will be a good coach. It’s been all about playing x-box and not having the extraordinary good fortune to play on a Super Bowl caliber team. (And the reason those Chargers never made it to the Super Bowl had nothing to do with their WRs. It was because they had no defense.) If you have substantive reasons to be opposed to this hire, I’m sure we would all be happy to hear them.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Maybe you can explain to me, then, how the Niners managed to get production out of Fred Dean?
I don’t have substantive reasons. All I have is what little was posted about Collins earlier, which also included that the Bills were thinking of bringing him in, and that Collins hoped to stay on the West Coast. Collins also felt that he was ahead of the other candidates.
Then, later, the posting on Bear Territory that Chandler had been hired.
Why 6 of one versus half a dozen of the others?
I guess, what I want, is a complete story. If I didn’t know about Collins, then Chandler’s hiring would likely have me reading this thread more than posting on it.
How do these decisions work? And, as was asked earlier, how much are we paying him?

So now you’re saying that Don Coryell’s Chargers had a great defense and the reason they didn’t get to the Super Bowl was that they had terrible wide receivers? Give me some slack here, Auricursine, I’m older than you are, and I’m having a hard time keeping up with whatever it is you are arguing!
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Re: Fred Dean. I meant to say that I never understood how a defensively challenged team let their best pass rusher disappear to a team who used that same player to go to the Super Bowl.
And I’ve never doubted any of Coryell’s receivers. Guilty as charged with trying to talk about too many things at once.
I want pare down my thoughts specifically to this: What was it that Chandler brings to the table that Collins apparently couldn’t? Specifically because it seems that Collins was working with a number of the receivers with whom current recruits would know, in addition to Collins having had success with those receivers as their coach.
I’ve always been of the thinking that felt that a great player is not automatically necessarily the greatest coach per se. That’s not a knock on Chandler, it’s about how Collins’ lack of NFL experience didn’t seem detrimental to youngsters seeking out help from him as a WR coach.
CGB has always been where I would go to some fuller explanation as to why the football team made the decisions it made, even if I didn’t necessarily agree with them at the time I heard of the decision. But after I heard an explanation, the understanding made me better able to see what’s what.
That’s really all I’m after here. Chandler versus Collins.

I'm late to the party here
That’s not a knock on Chandler, it’s about how Collins’ lack of NFL experience didn’t seem detrimental to youngsters seeking out help from him as a WR coach.
But how do we know that youngsters didn’t seek out Chandler as well? Chandler and Collins both coached youngsters at FBU.
I don’t mean this to sound like I’m diminishing Collins (who might be a fabulous coach — FBU wouldn’t have him on staff if he weren’t good, I imagine), but on paper Chandler has the superior resume it would seem. More experience as a player AND coach in the NFL. And with neither of them that experienced at the college level as an assistant, both would seem to have a learning curve in recruiting. If that’s the case, Chandler could conceivably have been the choice because he has instant credibility with recruits and parents because of his great NFL career.

I think Hardy would be an amazing recruiter, but I seriously doubt he’d be playing x-box with anyone and I also don’t think his 30-year age difference from the recruits would be a problem. I was just curious why you’d be OK with a 47 year old coach but not a 52 year old coach or however old Chandler is.
Chandler will be 56 when the season starts...
Not quite 300 years old.
This is what stood out to me tonight, from California Pete on an earlier thread:
“It does confirm my growing sense, though, that a generation gap is opening up within Tedford’s program. It wasn’t that long ago that Tedford himself was considered a "young" coach, taking over Cal in his early 40s. But it seems the newest crop of coaches are becoming ever more precocious, with the most flattering spin I can give to Lupoi’s departure being that he’s young and ambitious and not willing to "pay his dues". But there’s a whole new generation of coaches, such as Sarkisian and Kiffin, who seem to think 35 is plenty old enough to be the chief executive of a multi-million-dollar operation such as a major college football program.
That the barely-30 Lupoi seems to think he already deserves to be a Pac-12 coordinator would amuse me if if didn’t trouble me so much as being symptomatic of a Millennial generation that seems to be very impatient about working their way up whatever career ladder on which they happen to be. Not surprising, then, that Tedford goes with the 50-something Chandler, who’ll fit in with most of the rest of the staff.
While I sympathize with Tedford, I also fear this may be his ultimate downfall. As much as I dislike Pete Carroll, one thing he did so very well was tap into the energy of youthful coaches, allowing them to quickly rise up the ranks to coordinator status."
Agreeing with this sentiment, tells me that even Nickerson might not be the best choice. It also helps my reticence in getting that excited about Chandler, either.
"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is

by Auricursine on Jan 18, 2012 11:30 PM PST up reply actions
Youthful vigor is something to consider. But Tedford’s not trying to emulate Carroll’s approach any more than Carroll was trying to emulate Paterno’s approach (allegedly). So I’d say that our program needs victories and an identity more than it needs another Tosh or younger coaches. Our stoic old institution may be best served by attracting athletes looking to work with awesome technicians at each position than by having a crack team of tweeters who know who Young Jeezy is. Who knows. There’s lots of ways to win.
WE ARE THE 0%
I appreciate the shout-out, but please do note my ambivalence. Perhaps because I’m older myself, I have a preference for the “experienced” guy over the “young” guy. Thus, long before this week, I was never fully aboard the Tosh bandwagon. Moreover, I’m especially attracted to the total package that Tedford presents (at least to the public) in the sense that he cares more about educating and mentoring young men, on and off field, than he does about wins and losses. Thus, what sells me about Wes Chandler—beyond my infatuation with Air Coryell—is his apparently no less sincere devotion to community service and teaching. Several links have been posted tonight testifying to that effect, citing both Chandler’s community work in San Diego and his teaching/mentoring of the young receivers of the Cleveland Browns. Other schools may offer a more dynamic emphasis on wins and on youthful coaches whose own personal ambitions are no less vigorous than the college-age athletes they’re tutoring, while Cal under Tedford (and OSU under Riley) look more like programs led by grown-ups who are comfortable with their place and now want to offer fatherly guidance to the young men under their watch.
So I really do like the Chandler hire at first glance, and I would celebrate Hardy Nickerson taking Tosh’s place for similar reasons. Nonetheless, I was sincere in what I posted earlier in that Lupoi’s departure does suggest that Tedford is fast approaching a point in his career where he needs to get comfortable with significantly younger guns taking responsibility. Tedford, at least from afar, seems most comfortable working with guys his own age (or older), and while that was fine when he was 40-something, it becomes less reasonable as he gets older. If not Lupoi, it sure would be nice to see a young coach rise up the ranks of Tedford’s staff and not seemingly be forced to go elsewhere to find the opportunity to advance his career.
If it seems I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth, it’s because I am. I’m really torn on this notion of whether or not Tedford’s rapid aging relative to his peers around the conference is an asset or a liability moving forward.
Go Bears!

I think the whole x-box thing is ridiculous. Sure, for some coaches it can work to be buddy-buddy with recruits. But that is certainly not the only possible relationship that can be successful between a coach and a player or recruit. If I had to select the one person I have ever known who I respect the most, it would be my dad. And I don’t ever recall him playing games with me (well, except poker). He liked to say, “I’m not your friend, I’m your father.” And he was. Even though we had lots of fun together over the years, he never tried to have a buddy-buddy relationship with us.
I believe that young athletes can appreciate a father-figure type coach just as much as they can appreciate a buddy-buddy coach. It depends on the person. Maybe I’m sensitive to this notion that anybody who is over 40 can’t possibly be a good coach because I’m over 50, myself. But I do think it’s kind of silly to make playing x-box with the players the litmus test as to whether someone can be a good coach or a good recruiter. In fact, being a bit old school myself, I tend to think that a buddy-buddy relationship can undermine the effectiveness of a coach. Again, it depends on the person. Maybe some people can pull it off. But trying to be the “friend” of your kids or of employees you supervise or players you coach can easily backfire.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
In the end, just like our game against UW this year,
I hope Sarkesian left too much on the clock so that we can mount one final drive.
Chandler is now hired. A D-Line coach spot remains to be filled. Once these guys are in place, they can start to call kids, no?
Whatever my reluctance to embrace Chandler last night, going forward he’s now the guy. If he’s got any spectacular over-the-shoulder grabs left, now would be the time to use them with the youngsters.
(As for Collins, I’m still curious about how one trumped the other. I’ve also begun to wonder, if, perhaps, it wasn’t Collins who ultimately might have helped “sell” Chandler as a choice. But that’s ultimately not important.)
Let’s buckle ourselves in, and see how this final recruiting fortnight will turn out.

I don’t think it’s literally about xbox as much as xbox is a metaphor or euphemism for relatability. I do agree it’s ludicrous to say anyone over a certain age can’t coach, when in fact, probably closer to the opposite is true, but it would be nice to have someone on staff who is young and dynamic. That doesn’t necessarily have to be our WR coach though, so I’m eager to see what Chandler can do with our guys.

I remember when Mooch left, one of the reasons we hired Holmoe was because it would provide “continuity” and keep the recruiting class together. While that’s definitely important, you can’t sacrifice the long-term just for a couple signees.
Losing Payton wouldn’t be the end of the world, especially if we keep all the other WR’s. Heck, a couple weeks ago we weren’t even sure we’d get him. Now, it’d be great to have him, of course – not trying to put him down at all. One guy just isn’t gonna make or break the receiving corps, though.

The only worry is that the Moms have the most influence on the kid’s decision, and she may not know who he is.
They won't.
I think it’s asking too much. I think it would be better if he had the connection to the school as a Chuck Muncie or Russell White might have, if they were coaching their old positions.

He’s got a great playing resume, and he’s had plenty of years to build up his coaching acumen. Plus, he works at a recruits’ camp and has contacts with a lot of them. What’s not to like?

Honestly, I think if information about Chandler had been leaked first, and we had hired Collins, we’d be asking why we didn’t hire Chandler.
I think this is a great hire. NFL cred. Experience calling plays. Knows Coach P. Knows some of the targets. Involved in community outreach. Immortalized in The Karate Kid. What more do you want?

If the names Wes Chandler, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson, and Kellen Winslow don’t ring a bell, then do yourself a favor and track down a copy of the 1982 playoff game between the Chargers and Dolphins. Never has a better football game been played. And with the hiring of Chandler, the Cal family now has two touchdown scorers from that epic clash: Muncie by ground, and Chandler by air by punt return. Article on Wes Chandler when he was coaching WRs with Cleveland
Over the past few months, Browns coach Romeo Crennel has received high grades for his ability to turn Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. into Pro Bowl players.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Or less deserved. Unless, of course, you belong to the buck-stops-here crowd. In which case then, Crennel has done a remarkable job in transforming the brashly outspoken two receivers.
But for those of you suspicious that someone else had a stronger hand in quieting the two supremely gifted athletes and turning them into solid pros, look no further than Wes Chandler, the receivers coach who operates well under the radar.

I have read all I need to read with this one paragraph
“Under Chandler, Edwards and Winslow became more precise in running their routes. And their concentration on catching the football at times reached spectacular, sometimes miraculous, heights.”
Welcome Coach Chandler!!!!
Officially official
Wes Chandler Named Wide Receivers Coach
BERKELEY -Former NFL standout Wes Chandler has been named wide receivers coach at California, Golden Bear head coach Jeff Tedford announced Wednesday. Chandler has spent 26 years in professional football, including stints as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings.
“I’m very excited to announce the hiring of Wes Chandler,” Tedford said. “Wes is a quality person who brings all of the things to the table that Cal stands for. He’s a great football coach who is an outstanding technician. Just as importantly, he cares about the kids off the field and will be able to help them reach their full potential in all areas of their life. It’s a great day for our program, and we’re really happy to have him as part of our staff.”
“I’m excited about this opportunity at Cal,” Chandler said. “It starts at the top and coach Tedford and I share a lot of the same sentiments regarding what the game of football is all about. It’s more than just football, it’s also about the players and their well-being in the classroom and off the football field. It’s about teaching them basic fundamentals so they will be able to maximize their potential when they walk on the field, making them students of the game. We share that goal so it was a perfect marriage for me.”

Snow is to Seattle as Rain is to Los Angeles.
Growing up in SoCal everytime we’d get a storm the local news would run a “Stormwatch” segment and generally panic.

He’s not going to be up in Seattle long enough for that to make any sense.
He actually has 2
depending on the day, its tough to decide which one to launch off his lakeside house, summer for sure the cobalt, not sure his winter choice…… and he turned down 2 nfl interviews this year, but you’re right he is waiting for his dream job
He’s a smart man. Taking a job now would be selling too low. If he turns in a truly stellar year next year or in two years that’d be the time to go.
For instance, Tedford would have been ripe in 2004. Now I’m pretty sure he’s ours to keep (if we want).
ripe?
He was offered the SC job before Kiffen, the UCLA job before Mora, the Rams and Dolphins tried to talk to him before he declined… what is he waiting for?
Trust me
I know, its only a matter of time… we are the same speice, us dawgs have a lot of “Dooom” in us too, probably why we have reacted this way over a DL coach
And next Ed Too Tall Jones
is going to be announced as D-Line coach.
I would prefer Prof. Nathaniel Burke
from Farmers for our next DC if Clancy leaves.
“Falling space debris? We cover that.
Dryer fires? We cover that.
Tight ends? We cover that.”
I like this hire

It was fantastic."

Let me be the first to compliment the swiftness of this hire
Less than 36 hours after Cal issued the statement about Tosh and Kiesau, and only 12 hours after UW officially announced Kiesau’s hiring, we’ve already got a new coach in place.
Now let’s all hope he’s the right man for the job.

And let me be the first
to compliment the swiftness of this compliment. Less than 24 hours after the post that Chandler has been hired, we’ve already got a compliment in place.
Now let’s all hope you’re the right man for the recs.

Former NFL coaches
Welcome to Cal Wes. Wonder if hiring former NFL coaches will be our trend going forward. Guess we’ll find out next with the DL coach.
He was the first I looked at.

For better and worse
I think hiring FBU and 7v7 coaches is going to become the thing to do across college football.

Does the anagram thumb sports? The weekday slice rails. Sports pats the meal below the style. A kiss tools a recipe opposite the irrational slash. The honey plays with the foreseeable sample.
