I've wanted JT gone for years, BUT - Today, 05:20 PM
he is being treated unfairly here. I'm one of the Negas, have been for sometime so do NOT confuse this with S Pumping. I have been on the phone with my sources quite a bit today (they are well connected and have yet to lead me astray) and TOSH is to blame for this, not JT. I'm not sure how much I can say, but I'll give what I can. Here is the story/timeline as I have heard:
Tosh was offered a job at Wash and he came to JT with the "my heart is here speech". JT went and fought for Tosh to get the offer matched. JT and Tosh have a meeting where JT tells Tosh how much he wants to keep him, how he is an integral part of what they are doing, etc. He says that he went and got the offer matched and that he wanted him to stay, but that he won't/can't get into a bidding war for Tosh and that he (JT) needs his (Tosh's) word that this is done and that he (Tosh) isn't going anywhere. Tosh assures JT this is over. Tosh breaks his word, continues talking to UW and gets another offer which he doesn't present to JT, as he has already been told and committed to no bidding war.
JT didn't find out Tosh was gone (by voicemail) until he got off the plane for a recruiting trip Tosh was supposed to meet JT on. They were supposed to meet yesterday to recruit and Tosh didn't show.
Combine that with the fact that Tosh is breaking the unwritten coaches code of only recruiting for one school and he is dead to me and I suspect Cal and JT as well. If you are recruiting and switch schools, you stop recruiting those guys... pass them off to another on staff.
Truly despicable. In my estimation, JT has committed a multitude of sins, but this fiasco isn't on him. No one looks rosy in this, but this is Tosh's doing.
Hopefully this gives a picture of what went down without burning my sources. I don't want to talk about numbers, but if there are any questions, I'll do my best.

I'll just say this: It's worse than the original narrative.
I get being underappreciated and all the ramifications that come with it but when you clear out in the middle of the night with no warning and are immediately in contact with recruits that morning when your employers don't even know yet and start not only recruiting for your new program the guys you recruited for Cal but tell them, "DON'T GO TO CAL?"
That and other actions make this an irreparable rift, imo.

re: SOPA. Can somebody tell me if section 103 relates specifically and solely as to “foreign internet sites.” Most of the bill seems to relate solely to “foreign internet sites” as defined in section 101. However, 103, whose “market based solutions” section seems the most potentially dangerous to me, does not seem to have the foreign website qualifier.
That is concerning to me, esp. when coupled with sec104 immunity. However, 103 is limited as follows:
(i) the U.S.-directed site is primarily designed or operated for the purpose of, has only limited purpose or use other than, or is marketed by its operator or another acting in concert with that operator for use in, offering goods or services in a manner that engages in, enables, or facilitates—
(I) a violation of section 501 of title 17, United States Code;
(II) a violation of section 1201 of title 17, United States Code; or
(III) the sale, distribution, or promotion of goods, services, or materials bearing a counterfeit mark, as that term is defined in section 34(d) of the Lanham Act or section 2320 of title 18, United States Code; or
(ii) the operator of the U.S.-directed site—
(I) is taking, or has taken, deliberate actions to avoid confirming a high probability of the use of the U.S.-directed site to carry out acts that constitute a violation of section 501 or 1201 of title 17, United States Code; or
(II) operates the U.S.-directed site with the object of promoting, or has promoted, its use to carry out acts that constitute a violation of section 501 or 1201 of title 17, United States Code, as shown by clear expression or other affirmative steps taken to foster infringement.
Sites like Facebook, reddit, Wikipedia, CGB, etc etc etc don’t seem to fall within that definition.
Am I misreading this in some way?

But slightly channeling Twist here.
Can someone give me the bullet points on SOPA? As far as I can tell, it’s looking to protect copyrights that are so often currently infringed upon on the Web. Does it go farther than this? How does it do this in a harmful way? Or are the protestors just largely in favor of piracy?
I can write more tomorrow, but here are the quick hits. Here is the language (I rec most people read it themselves).
Sec101: Definitions
Sec102: US Attorney General can bring request Court issue order to shut down site (either directly to site or to domain host) of foreign infringers. This appears to relate solely to foreign websites directed at US traffic.
Sec103: “Market based solution.” Copyright owner can send a “shutdown notice” to a website or domain host if they find that the site is dedicated to infringing and they find an infringment. This does not seem to relate solely to foreign sites. No court action is required. You just send a notice and the people have 5 days to respond. There are more complications regarding ad networks, which confuses me.
Section 104: People get legal immunity for taking actions based upon Court Orders from AG or one of those shut down notice.
Section 105: People get legal immunity for taking actions that stop providing service for websites that harm US health (this appears to be related to Canadian websites selling cheap prescription drugs).
There is a lot mroe bla bla bla in all this, but these appear to be the real crux. It is pretty much section 102, 103, and 104 that are the most disconcerting to me.
But 102 seems to relate solely to foreign sites that are US directed. And 103 seems to relate solely to sites DEDICATED to infringing. So, I’m not sure why everybody is flipping their shit.
I think they are just beating the drum on this. And thats fine. Politics is based on fear. Make all the internet people afraid SOPA will take away the internet. I can’t find the specific language that underpins that claim, though.
If somebody can show it to me, that’d be great. I’m really loving this legislative analysis and look forward to further disucssion on it.

Also, its important to understand where we are in the legislative process.
PIPA, SOPA’s match in the Senate, passed the Senate committee. It has to now be passed by the Senate as a whole. Senator Wyden of Oregon has stated he will filibuster it. The way filibusters are set up, 1 senator can basically dominate everything. Here’s why. If you don’t have a quorum in the Senate, you can’t do shit. That means 50+ Senators. Now, you RARELY have 50+ senators there, because they are out doing things. And there is usually a tacit gentleman’s agreement that you don’t really NEED 50+ senators to get shit done.
However, if a quorum call is specifically requested and there are not 50+ senators, then everrything gets shut down. That never happens bc of the gentleman’s agreement. but if the senator is filibuster and calls for one and there aren;’t 50+ senators, filibustering dude wins.
So, are there 50+ senators who care THAT much about PIPA/SOPA to stop Wyden? I doubt it. So, if Wyden is serious about this, he ALONE can stop this thing.
On the House side, it’s still in committee. It hasn’t even passed committee, although it is anticipated that it will. They are in the mark up phase which is when they deal with amendments etc etc. The opposition flooded the mark up with amendments, but all have ben defeated. However, Lamar Smith, the sponsor, has made some changes. More changes are likely, esp. now that the White HOuse has come outa gainst it.
So, the committee has to pass it. Then, the House has to pass it. That may or may not happen. Eric Cantor, #2 in the House (and always gunning for #1), said that they won’t move on the matter if there is not consensus.
This is an inssue where Republicans AND Democrats are working together and against each other. It is not partisan. Democrast I respect are for it. Republicans I loathe are against it. Strange bed fellows etc etc etc. So, it has to pass the House.
THEN, PIPA has to pass the Senate (which we discussed previously). Then, they have the joint committee where the two bills have to be merged.
Then, the merged bill has to be re-passed the House and teh Senate. Wyden gets another shot to fili if he wants.
Then, Obama has to sign it into law and NOT veto it.
It is moderately surprising ANYTHING gets made into law givne how complex the system is.
But that is where we are now. It is basicalyl 1 step deep into the proces and there are still many many many many many many many many MANY MANY MANY steps remaining.
That is your civics lesson for the day, kids!

SOPA targeted any site that contributed to copyright infringement, even if it was simply facilitating the act by providing a tool that could be used for illegal purposes (regardless of intention). PIPA, on the other hand, requires the targeted site to have no significant use beyond copyright infringement. Basically, PIPA can only be used to censor a site if it’s more likely to be a source of illegal content than not. This is still problematic because a tool designed to accept user-generated content is, to some extent, at the whims of its users.

No, I think it’s an extreme position. I think that IP is over-protected, but I see the rationale for giving at least some protections for some limited period of time, at least in the non-software (and maybe non-art) realms.

1. Attorney General can ask court to shut down foreign website that has copyright violations.
2. ANybody that owns a copyright can send a notice to a hosting site to ask them to shut down a site if the site is focused on infringing and they find a infringment on their copyright there.

Here are my objections.
- First, there’s the “First they came for the foreign websites, and I did not speak up because I was not a foreign website” aspect. Given the de facto position the US holds as caretakers of the internet, the idea that one country can unilaterally nuke web sites without so much as a court hearing is disconcerting to me. What’s even more disturbing is that the very corporations in the US can do this.
- I don’t think it can possibly be successful in ending piracy. I don’t even have faith that it could take a sizable bite out of the problem. The proprieters of The Pirate Bay, one of the largest and most successful pirating organizations, have detailed simple plans that seem like they’ll be quite effective in working around the issue. (That link is actually not readable today due to SOPA protests, but you can probably go there again tomorrow.) It’s very hard for me to support a bill when I believe that it will be largely impotent in reaching its primary goal.
- The US FedGov has been far too beholden to copyright owners already, and they’re now giving them unprecedented power in the ability to shut down websites at will. This is part of a much larger conversation, but copyrights were originally intended

which has meandered over time from its original inception (14 years, with an option to renew for another 14) to its current, horrific realization (life of the author plus 70 years). This is the kind of creep that honestly makes me wonder whether I really want a playoff for college football. The point is that copyright holders have historically gotten everything they’ve ever wanted, and they continually press for more. To me, the amount of power they already wield is essentially unconstitutional. - I’m concerned about the precedent. I don’t know a way that I’m not making a slippery slope argument here, so feel free to dismiss this point as fallacious, but I don’t like the idea that a reactive congress that truly doesn’t understand the structure of the internet is so willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater, particularly given that the bathwater isn’t going anywhere. If this legislation fails to stop piracy, as I believe it will, I don’t know what’s coming next, and I don’t want to know.
I think I can agree that the internets are being a bit hyperbolic about what SOPA/PIPA are and do, but I do think there’s real potential for damage here. Maybe it’s largely academic, but if I can’t whine about academic things on a Cal blog, there where exactly can I whine about them?

Hey, thanks for the response. You made a lot of salient points. I do agree that it is better if SOPA/PIPA fails. I just wish people could make a more detailed argument as to why it is such a DISASTER.

I can’t say that I completely grasp it, but as I understand it, the current law has plenty of recourse for copyright holders (I got the lecture on this form my brother who picked it up as part of his work in asset forfeiture). Handing enforcement off to private entities seems to open up a can of worms for the law being enforced for private interest – more so than usual, that is.

I have not looked into SOPA in detail, but I did run into an article that I found informative. This article criticizes the poor legal language of the bill.
The article argues that “foreign” is not well-defined by the legislation. Is it based on the website URL? The IP address? The server location? If a US-based site has a US server and a UK server, which ones are domestic? At my first glance, the definitions used in the law seem to have some serious wiggle-room.

I’m opposed to SOPA/PIPA because copyright holders already have many alternatives when it comes to copyrighted material on the internet. For example, they can flag a video on YouTube, or report the website to it’s Internet Provider. BUT they already SEVERELY abuse that flag, and do a terrible job of finding the actual copyright violations. Some of the stuff that is flagged as copyrighted isn’t at all.
Also, our current copyright laws are bullshit (70 years after the death of the author!), and I don’t want to see that expanded at all.

Sadly, I’ve repressed (i.e. drank away) a lot of these memories… the only takeaways are that red wine stains can be removed from white carpets using Resolve and a lot of elbow grease, and if your first impression of a girl is that she might be crazy, she’s probably crazy. Also, even if I were cheating on her, this is a completely irrational response to somebody you’ve been dating for less than a month.

Like its name implies, the watch uses the 12-5-9 method (12 hours, 5×10 minutes, 9 single minutes) to tell the time. Moving clockwise, the first two lines of the LEDs show the hours. The next line is the minutes up to 50, with each glowing LED showing 10 minutes. The final two lines are the single minutes, with one LED for each minute.

I own 6 seiko watches (both automatics and quartz), and had a very good experience with all of them, until I purchased this one. I did not think much about puchasing the watch with a movement from Malaysia (big mistake!), because it is supossed to be built to Seiko quality standards.
Well, date mechanism does not work (both day of the week and day of the month), which is very annoying. Contacted the seller (Imperial Watches), and all I got as response was a recommendation to send it to Seiko for service. It is a logical solution, but 1) should have expected some more service (I had another issue with a watch in the past, and got far better service from another of Amazon’s sellers) and 2) I am not supossed to have this problem in the first place!!!!
If you are interested in this product, think twice about these Malaysia movements and Imperial Watches.
Hope this helps you make a good buying decision.

I purchased this watch from Amazon.com, LLC on August 20th. After about 4 months of use, it started gaining 5-7 MINUTES per hour when I wear it. If I don’t wear it for as little as a few hours, it stops completely. In contrast, my Citizen Eco-Drive continues to keep excellent time for over a week. While automatic watches should continue to operate for up to 48 hours, this one does not. Overall, not exactly a reliable timepiece.

Oh, doesn’t have to be sports bars. Only the first one is a sports bar. Just looking for places that would be fun on a bar hop (for example, Absinthe worked out really well last year).
Was thinking Cigar Bar as one place before Kells (never been, but imagine it should be fun at night).

It’s plenty big for your group of 15-20. It can probably accommodate about 75 total.
I think you will like. They are big into the hand-crafted cocktail thing and they have tasty bar snacks but it’s quite a casual darkly lit worn wooden floor kind of joint.
there are rooms for larger parties. and the patio can accomidate large groups as well.
but it’s not a party party place. it’s a sit down and chill place. and no tvs. but yes to drinks and cigars.

49ers Vs. Giants: A Prospector's Guide

The San Francisco 49ers get their second home game of the postseason on Sunday as they host the New York Giants in the 2012 NFC Championship Game. This marks the 13th conference title game appearance for the 49ers, which is third among NFL franchises since 1970. I knew the 49ers had been to numerous conference championships, but I didn’t realize it was quite that many.
After the jump I’ve posted some of the notable stats leading up to the game, wrapping it up with a comparison of regular season statistics. The Giants are dead last in rushing and I think it’s safe to say we’ll expect a lot of passing from Eli Manning. Of course, if the rain is pouring down on Sunday, it will be interesting to see if the Giants compensate in some manner.
On the defensive side of the ball, outside of the pass rush, the Giants are struggling. They are getting plenty of sacks, but they’re still giving up plenty of passing yards. When the 49ers and Giants last met, while Alex Smith did not hoist up a huge passing total, the team showed a willingness to put the game-plan in Alex Smith’s hands. It wasn’t a shootout, but Alex came out passing from the get-go after the Giants basically dared him to pass on them.
Given that previous performance and Alex’s performance against New Orleans, it will be interesting to see what kind of game plan the Giants defense comes out with against Alex Smith and company.

So Saturday night, was planning a bar crawl. Since Sunday is the NFC Championship game and because of my lifelong love of the Niners, figured we’d make it a Niners themed bar crawl.
Last year, the theme was “Suit Up!” and we bar crawled to a few bars known for their cocktails (went to Bourbon and Branch; Absinthe; Comstock Saloon).
So help me pick a few bars! Figured we’d start at a sports bar, migrate to two more bars, then end up at a place like Kells that has drinking and dancing and stuff. Friends suggested starting at Red Jack Saloon. Never been, no idea how big it is.
The bars in between can be cocktail bars in the spirit of Absinthe and Bourbon and Branch; just as long as it can accomodate our crew (probably 15 to 20 people)?
Any suggestions?

BERKELEY -Two highly-regarded members of Cal’s 2012 football recruiting class have enrolled in school and began attending classes Tuesday on the first day of the spring semester. QB Zach Kline (Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) and OL Christian Okafor (Houston, TX/Westbury HS) graduated from their respective high schools in December and are slated to participate in the Golden Bears’ practices this spring.
Kline is rated the nation’s No. 3 quarterback by Rivals and was a high school All-American in 2011, participating in the Under Armour All-America Game and also being listed by SuperPrep as an All-American. In addition to his ranking by Rivals, Kline is listed among the nation’s top quarterbacks by Scout (No. 4), ESPN (No. 4) and MaxPreps (No. 6 pro style). He ranks as high as the No. 44 player overall nationally according to Rivals. Kline was named the Gatorade California Football Player of the Year, the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team member of the San Francisco Chronicle’s All-Metro squad as a senior when he completed 230-of-341 passes for a school-record 67.4 completion percentage, a school-record-tying 36 touchdowns and 3,630 passing yards to rank fourth in the state of California and No. 18 nationally. Because McCann-Erickson was a Sterling Cooper competitor and everyone at Sterling Cooper is under contract with a non-compete clause, it seemed likely that McKann-Erickson was buying PPL to kill off Sterling Cooper.
Ultimately, Lane Price fires everyone at Sterling Cooper before the sale can be finalized, and the Sterling Cooper staff raids their client list. The big contract at the new firm (Sterling Cooper Draper Price) is Lucky Strike, representing more than 70% of billings.
It was survival that prompted Draper, et al to raid their client list.
Lupoi wasn’t in a position where he was being forced to act to save his career.

Coach Charlie Collins continues to be one of the nation’s top wide receiver gurus. He built his reputation working with top wideouts Chad Ochocinco and Steve Smith, both All Pro receivers, while they were in junior college. He also worked with Ochocinco, who still considers Collins his mentor, and Chris Henry during his time contributing to the Cincinnati Bengals receiver corps and still personally trains T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the offseason.
Many of the NFL’s top receivers continue to seek out Coach Collins in the offseason to work with him in Southern California. Collins has also trained several top youth All-Americans from the LA area. He stresses fundamentals and the nuances of playing WR at the highest levels. He understands the necessary techniques to improve hand-eye coordination, footwork, release and separation, as well as how to teach a receiver to sink his hips coming in and out of breaks.
Collins spent last season coaching receivers for the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions after spending the prior season with the UFL’s California Riverwoods. He is a former wide receiver with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos and was an All-American at Cal State Northridge.

I'll tell you why
It’s because SF weather is notoriously unpredictable.
In NY, you know it’ll snow in winter, so you cover it up. You know summer nights are warm and clear, so it’s open.
In SF, it could be a warm night, then be bitter cold and rainy the very next day.
The closest we have to a rooftop bar is Medjool. Not even a great place, but I go there for the rooftop bar part.
I still think it can be done, especially with hotels.

Sorry guys — can’t give a flying fuck about Tosh today. Found out late last night that a very good friend (bridesmaid at our wedding) went in to the hospital and that the baby she has been carrying for 37 weeks has no heartbeat. They induced her last night and wouldn’t perform a c-section. We’re going to Alta Bates in a few hours. If anyone has advice on how to help the couple through this, I’m all ears, because at this point I’m at a total loss for words.

-Other people in their lives probably won’t have heard. If they need you to, you can spread the word for them, so they don’t have to go through the pain of calling people.

It is so good of you to be there for them, and I’m sorry that anyone has to be there at all.
Be there to focus on the basic things that they are likely to forget. Get them food and water, find the hospital grief counselor, take care of the contacts for the rest of the family. Make sure their house and other affairs are in order. Don’t try to be everything they need, but be the one with the clear head to get them what they need.
And it will take time and support. Allow for those things.

To make things somewhat worse, Mrs. daveman is about 35 weeks pregnant and so far everything is OK. My wife was looking forward to the two of them going through motherhood together (even though it’s #3 for us and would have been #1 for our friend). I think it might be hard for her to see us after our baby is born. Tricky situation.
That’s hard, too. If it’s hard for them to see you guys, I hope it doesn’t hurt you too much :(

That could certainly happen . This happened to one of my best friends recently. She had a really hard time even meeting our mutual friend’s new baby since they were due at the same time. The best thing is to understand if your friend gets into the situation.
My recommendations:
What to do:
-When she allowed me to see her, i was pretty fussy and made myself busy at her house (dishes, put away groceries, clean the counter) so she wouldn’t feel like i was just staring at her and expect her to entertain me.
-food. i dropped by with food all the time.
-im female so i don’t know how comfortable you are but i would just go and sit with my friend and hold her hand in pretty much complete silence most times.

One other thing:
I shared my own feelings about the loss. I got attached to my soon-to-be god niece and i told my friend about my excitement to meet her and how we were gonna wear matching auntie/niece outfits and go shopping and be totally fabulous together. She appreciated it. I think it helped her know that her daughter was loved by so many people.

Thanks sincey — this is great advice. I know we’re going to have to feel it out for awhile since we’re still expecting and as much as we’d all like to think that it won’t affect her, I’m sure that it will be difficult. Right now, she has asked my wife to be there with her so she’s at the hospital to help her sort through her feelings. She’s also bringing some food for the family. Some other close friends are taking care of the baby furniture, carseat, etc. and storing it away for them.
The healing process from all of this is going to take some time.
Ick, I never thought about unscrambling all the baby room prep. Not cool.

Trust your instincts
I understand something of this. About 21 years ago, my sister lost a child she was carrying at about the same point in the pregnancy. I felt as if I was stepping into a minefield.
I’d imagine that you’re at a total loss for words because you realize how deeply shocked and hurt your friends are. I think this indicates that you’re a sensible and sensitive man.
Possibly the greatest gift you can give the grieving couple are these words, “I’m so sorry.” And a hug (if they’ll allow it).
Aside from that, it ’s all about support. Sometimes that means sticking around through the lingering silence. Sometimes it means giving the couple space to privately grieve. But in all cases it means listening with your heart and mind, actively engaged.
There is no manual for this kind of thing. Just be there and be open to the moment. I’m sorry for their loss.

We had a neighbor who lost a daughter during childbirth about 8 or so years ago and it almost ended their marriage. Happily, they made it through and now have a beautiful 6 year old daughter. I just remember when we had a neighborhood garage sale and they were selling all of their baby stuff (carseat, high chair, stroller, etc.) it was just so sad.
I have no perspective that could help you, but, for whatever they’re worth, additional prayers are headed your friends’ way.

I can’t add anything beyond what others have said, but it’s an event that hits especially hard for parents and even though the good thoughts of a complete stranger on the other side of the country don’t matter, your friends have mine anyway. Hopefully just the fact that you are there will lift them.

Thanks everyone for the good, sound advice. It’s amazing how thoughtful and wise this community is and I really appreciate it. You guys, most of whom I’ve never met before, are really wonderful people.
I just got back from the Alta Bates and it’s as expected. Because she’s technically not full term yet, they are going to have to induce her and it’s taking a long time. She’s received an epidural and is waiting around until she’s more fully dilated and then they are going to induce her labor.
It’s truly heart-breaking, but after visiting with her it’s clear how she wants to deal with this. She wants people to be with her and to cry with her. I think that the last thing she wants is to be alone through this process or for people to be afraid to come and see her. She was touched that so many people came today and I think it means a lot to her for her close friends who have known her for a long time to be with her.
Thanks again for all your thoughts, prayers and well wishes — again, it is very much appreciated during this very, very tough time.
I had a friend who had this exact same situation, but the lost baby was one of a set of twins which made it both better (one live, healthy baby to nurture and love) and worse (live baby is a reminder every minute of lost baby). My best advice to you is to acknowledge the loss, not just now, but over the next six months to a year. Also, if you can bear it, offer to clear out their nursery if they want it. We disassembled the second crib and removed everything that had to do with the second baby and my friend found that a big help that they didn’t have to do WORK as a result of their loss.

Yeah, I've been sent this, too. Here's what I sent out...
Baked Fish
Prepare a marinade using combinations of the following (with rough amounts listed, but feel free to adjust to your tastes):
1/2 c soy sauce
1 T sesame oil
1 T rice wine vinegar (or another acid of your choice)
1/2 t powdered ginger or 1 T slivered ginger
1 T chopped scallion
1 T chopped garlic
1/2 t honey
1 t red pepper flakes
Marinate fish fillets for about 30 minutes and remember to preheat oven to 350F. Bake for about 7 minutes and check for done-ness. The rest of the marinade can be reduced on the stovetop to be poured over the fish or served on the side.

Cube potatoes, coat in olive oil and herbs, and bake at 500F, scraping every 10 minutes until you can pierce them and they look done.

Recipe for Indian nachos
Ingredients:
Papdi:
•1 cup all purpose flour (maida or plain flour)
•1/4 cup semolina flour (sooji)
•2 tablespoons oil
•1/2 teaspoon salt
•1/3 cup + 2 tablespoon lukewarm water
To garnish the papdi:
•Boiled potato, peeled and sliced into thin rounds (about the thickness of a quarter or 1/16″)
•Boiled or canned chickpeas (rinsed and drained)
•Plain yogurt
•Salt
•Roasted cumin seed powder (bhuna jeera)
•Red chili powder
•Hari cilantro chutney (recipe available on my site)
•Tamarind chutney (recipe available on my site)
Method
Papdi:
1.In a bowl mix flour, sooji, salt and oil.
2.Add the water a little at a time while kneading until it forms a firm dough
3.Cover the dough and set aside for 15 minutes or more.
4.Divide the dough into about 3 equal parts.
5.Take one section of the dough and roll it into 8″ diameter, fairly thin about thickness of dime. Do the same with the remaining 2 parts.
6.Prick firmly the rolled dough about 1/4 inch apart with a fork, (this is done so the papdi do not puff while frying) and cut them in about 1 1/2″ squares with a sharp knife.
7.Heat the oil in a frying pan on medium heat.
8.The frying pan should have at least 1 1/2 inch of oil. To check if the oil is ready, just put a small piece of dough in the oil. The dough should sizzle right away but come up to the surface slowly. If the dough rises immediately, let the oil cool slightly and try again.
9.Make sure to place just enough papdi to cover top of the oil in the frying pan in a single layer. Don’t overcrowd. Fry the papdi until both sides are a light golden-brown.
10.Remove cooked papdi with a slotted or mesh spoon and transfer to a plate.
11.Continue cooking the remaining papdi in batches until all the dough is gone.
12.After the papdi cool to room temperature they should be crisp.
13.Papdi can be stored in airtight container for 1 month.

I didn’t read the recipe carefully. I forgot to add the peas and used 2 sticks of butter, instead of 1/2. Refusing to panic, I served my guests a small cup of the melted butter, to which I added a few chopped green onions, prior to the main meal (assorted Healthy Choice dinners. I told my guests it was “Paula’s Special Soup”. It got rave reviews. Now I have to send everyone the recipe. Thanks, Paula. Highly recommend.

I got super creative and heated the peas in the microwave. Yes!! It is possible!! And you can serve them with Rachel Ray’s Late Night Bacon for super delicious eatin’! Well, I didn’t actually have ENGLISH peas..I just had plain old American peas..Del Monte to be exact but the recipe works just fine. Oh, and I left out the butter..but still, excellent recipe!!

First, I appreciate the instructions in this recipe that were clear, but the “easy” designation? It was convenient that Chef Deen clarified the butter—ha ha!—by noting that 1/2 stick of butter equals 1/4 cup. That saved some complicated math!
However, the “drained” thing threw me for a loop. I wasted an afternoon trying to find a can of drained peas before asking a woman if she could help me, and it was pretty embarrassing. I suppose it all worked out, because she thought it was kind of cute that I thought you could buy pre-drained peas, and asked me over for a dinner from some of Chef Deen’s other recipes. The English peas turned out just great with a little help from my new friend Annette, and went perfectly with Boiled Hot Dog on Hot Dog Bun, in particular, and she’s promised to walk me through that one soon. She suggested I work up to it with one of Chef Deen’s intermediate recipes first, though, like Opened Bag of Chips Adjacent to Opened Can of Dip.

Railway staff in Indonesia have started hanging concrete balls above train tracks to try to prevent commuters from riding on carriage roofs.
The first balls were installed just above carriage-height near a station outside the capital, Jakarta.
More will be put up elsewhere if they are found to keep people off the roofs.
Previous attempts to deter roof riders included spraying roofs with paint, spreading oil on carriages and hiring musicians to perform safety songs.
Correspondents say those initiatives have failed. Officials hope that the latest move will prove to be the ultimate deterrent.
Roof riders also face the possibility of imprisonment.

Report: Tebow played second half of Patriots game with considerable injuries
The score was 35-7 at halftime of the AFC divisional playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos. Even with the fully functional version of his offense, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow was going to have a tough time coming back from that kind of deficit. As it turns out, Tebow played most of the second half of that game with some fairly considerable physical handicaps.
As first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tebow took a hit in the third quarter that tore cartilage attaching his ribs to his sternum, bruised one of his lungs and caused fluid to build up in his chest. In the two nights after the game, Tebow had trouble sleeping because of the pain, and he underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the damage.
The amazing thing was that Tebow actually passed more often, and with slightly more success, in the second half — though his “passing success” is a bit of a stretch in either half. He completed 3 of 10 passes for 28 yards in the first half, and 6 of 16 for 108 yards in the second half. Admittedly, the Pats could play prevent and off coverage through the entire second half, especially when Tom Brady’s sixth touchdown pass of the game made the score even more out of reach in the third quarter.

Rangers, Yu Darvish reach deal
ARLINGTON, Texas — Yu Darvish will be pitching in a Texas Rangers uniform in 2012.
Darvish has agreed to a six-year deal worth $60 million just prior to Wednesday’s 4 p.m. CT deadline.
The agreement comes 30 days after the Rangers won the right to negotiate with Darvish and his representatives, Don Nomura and Arn Tellem, by submitting a record $51.7 million posting bid. The club will now send the Nippon-Ham Fighters that payment and Darvish will come to the United States to pitch in the big leagues for the first time.
The 25-year-old Darvish was 18-6 last season in Japan with a league-high 1.44 ERA and 276 strikeouts. He walked just 36 batters in 232 innings. Scouts have raved about Darvish’s fastball command and what some say is a seven-pitch repertoire, which includes about everything but a changeup.

Yeah he’s 38 but I think given the current rotation, he’s #3. I’d take him over Lilly, Evoldi, anyone else but Kershaw and maybe Billz. Billz hasn’t impressed me much. He pitched well the 1 game I went to (after laboring the 1st) last year.

I am apparently ~1300 miles from my nearest In-n-out, although driving to the eastern suburbs of Dallas would take me through Nashville, Memphis, and Little Rock, so I could probably enjoy some delicious cooked meats en route.

Me too, we were there on Sunday and sat in the table by the door… since they remodeled the 24th St. one there’s a heater vent right under that table. We were frozen all day and then got blasted by the furnace for like an hour while we chowed down. Fantastic.

He goes up over corners and attacks the ball, catching it away from his body like a rebounder. The Niners struggled mightily in the red zone all season, and Jeffery might not be a burner but is the kind of player you can post up in the end zone to help solve that problem.

Andrew Bynum growing into a big thing for the Lakers
O’Neal doesn’t blame Bynum for his extended absences, saying he has been victim to “freak injuries” such as Kobe Bryant colliding with his knee during a game three years ago.
O’Neal said he preferred Bynum to Orlando’s Dwight Howard, widely considered the NBA’s top center and a player the Lakers have long coveted, because Bynum has a variety of post moves that Howard can’t match.
The former Lakers great was not ready to call Bynum a current Lakers great, though O’Neal conceded that Bynum, in his seventh season, was closing in on the franchise’s list of accomplished big men. O’Neal listed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the greatest Lakers center, followed by Wilt Chamberlain and George Mikan.
O’Neal, who spent eight seasons with the Lakers and retired last summer as the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history, would presumably be next, though he didn’t say.
“Here it’s all about the championships, it’s all about the stats and it’s all about the persona you bring,” O’Neal said of the aura surrounding the Lakers. "Unfortunately for [Bynum], he’s still under the Black Mamba [Bryant], so it’s still the Black Mamba’s house right now, but he’s playing great and I wish him well.
“Hopefully he will go down as one of the Lakers greats.”
Still only 24, Bynum isn’t ready to call himself “The Big” anything. He’s been a part of two championship teams on a journey that may not involve a move to Orlando if the Lakers decide there’s no need to upgrade at a position where they’re already well stocked.
Interesting proposal to eliminate tuition at UC
Thursday, as the regents conclude their two-day meeting, they expect to focus almost entirely on developing revenue sources beyond the state, and beyond tuition.
The students’ proposal fits right in.
Instead of paying tuition – currently at $12,192, not including mandatory fees, room, board or books – the “UC Student Investment Proposal” would require that students commit to paying 5 percent of their annual income for 20 years after graduating.
“Under this plan, no undergraduate student would have to worry about paying for their UC education while they are in school,” Chris LoCascio, president of “Fix UC” – the group of UC Riverside students that developed the idea – said in a written presentation to the regents.
The students calculate that, under the most conservative estimates, UC could triple its revenue over the next two decades to $4.6 billion. The plan would be phased in over several years, and students say UC would begin receiving more income from graduates than from tuition by year seven.
“The UC system will be far better off, financially under this proposed,” concludes the seven-page report submitted to the regents."
