Breaking: Eric Kiesau Reportedly Joining Washington Huskies
Let the pillaging and plundering continue: multiple independent sources are reporting that Kiesau has joined the UW staff.
Hearing it's a done deal, Eric Kiesau will be new WR coach at
#Washington, another big hire
Source: Kiesau on his way to Seattle right now. Will be announced before the end of the week.
As always, keep an eye on CGB for further developments. We're hearing rumors that UW will continue its poaching spree by bringing in Tedford and Oski while renaming the SAHPC the Sarkisian-Acquired Husky Performance Center. They have also expressed interest in purchasing Evans Hall.

Wow. I know I said I didn't want to read CGB for a while but I am attracted to disaster
How the fuck is this possible!? We went from such high euphoria barely a week ago to the absolute nadir of the Tedford era.
Well we were never meant to go to the Rose Bowl.
I also now hate UW more than any thing in the world. I’ll root for Stanford (yes spelled correctly) over the Fuskies.

Roy, it’s okay, take a deep cleansing breath. It’s not that bad. There are still plenty of Cal commits for next year, and 2012 probably wasn’t the season for a Rose Bowl run anyway.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Yea but half of those commits were WR who we desperately needed. And the chances of them sticking around now that Keiasu is gone? Ugh.
And the DL commits? Whoops
And Shaq Thompson? Yikes.
Yea we’re screwed

FUTBALL IZ SRS BUSINESS GUYZ // ONLY HAVE FUN WHEN ROZ BWL

But it is when the two people essential to your entire recruiting class up and leave before you get those LOI. Tosh was supposed to coach these linemen and Keiasu was supposed to coach these wide receivers. They chose Cal because these two coaches were proven assets that were young enough to relate with them. While there is much more to choosing your college than one or two coaches, these one or two coaches were going to be the biggest impact on these kids’ lives and careers. I wouldn’t be surprised if our class just went to hell. We’ll keep Kline and the few Bears that were completely committed, but I don’t really have much hope for the 4 and 5 stars that joined the CalGang basically to ride the waves with their friends.
And while I partially agree with you, zoonews, about the general lack of faith being meh, but I can’t really keep my head up right now when we have a coach who hasn’t been able to win a ton of games (not entirely his fault), a great defensive coordinator no one expects to stay, and we just lost our two young position coaches who had a ton of talent and potential. Oh yeah, and a lot of recruits have lost their fire for Cal now that they have no idea who’s going to be coaching them.
We HAVE to make some really good hires in this next week or so. If we don’t have these positions filled by the signing date, I think our recruiting class drops from 9 to about 20ish. Which isn’t a complete nightmare, but isn’t the level of class we need to make that push for a Rose Bowl.
THIS
And it’ll be worse than 20ish. We won’t break the top 25 and we’ll be middling in the middle of the Pac.
In other words, Go Bears!
I feel so much more comfortable now!

UW's goal...
…wasn’t their projected recruiting class ranked in the mid-40s prior to this going down?
Perhaps this is what they had in mind all along…
It’s just staggering that, given cuts in higher education, that the state of Washington has 1.2 million dollars to throw at 2 coaches.
There’s no way that UC can justify this much money in such an economy, not when we got the Regents gearing up for more cuts. I know that a chunk of this money comes from outside donations to the program, but from the outside, it nevertheless looks terrible in terms of the example it sets for the university’s supposed educational priorities.
My wife kept stressing to me last night: Cal without Lupoi is still THE University of California. Our Nobels didn’t disappear, our academic reputation, or even our element. Just an assistant coach, who is the flavor of the month right now, until he gets too old to relate to the kids he’s recruiting (likely to happen sooner, rather than later).
OTOH, Washington likely needs the boost to their ego by a good football team, since the university might not offer anything else…

UW isn’t a bad school, as much as I would love to give it shit. It’s no Cal, but it has some good grad programs and it’s definitely not Oregon or ASU.
As a husky
when you get rejected by Cal, you go to UW
Last time I looked
washington was only ranked about a dozen spots ahead of Oregon. That may change with the firing of Oregon’s president last month, and not in a good way.
Just about all colleges and universities better get ready for a lot of adversity as the slow developing global financial meltdown continues. I think many will go bankrupt and disappear. The states schools such as Cal will probably downsize in enrollment and quality.
Sorry to be a debby downer but anyone with three neurons in their forehead should be able to see it coming.

We just had a frustrating season and the staff is getting a shakeup. Shit happens. If this class isn’t the class we dreamed about then we make the push that next year’s will be, with committed coaches in place and plenty of playing time up for grabs. The lack of faith in our own program, people, facilities and traditions openly on display around the interwebs is getting disgusting.

Some of these recruits were merely leaning towards maybe talking to an insider about keeping Cal on the short list and that’s getting lost in the shuffle. And there are scads of assistant coaches out there and they are going to be evaluated and hired by the same people who evaluated and hired Tosh and Kiesau. YES IT SUCKS but geez, get a grip.

There is a difference between agreeing that this sucks and asking questions and, say, calling for everyone’s head, perpetuating the prophesy that Cal is snakebit, tacitly belittling the athletes committed to the program as not good enough to win anything, and tweeting your athletic director to tell her that she is a twat.

True...What's also true however is that...
It’s mathematically speaking….many times more likely that Cal’s AD is the one who would first suffer a strained “vagina”…Price having balls almost the same size as the pigskins he throws…Sorry…practicing some new found defense…(it’s a game after all)
The fact that we couldn’t keep around two of the most important people south of Tedford that would’ve helped us get to the Rose Bowl, doesn’t inspire ANY faith

Alright.
Do we have any volunteers to sell your souls for this doom lord millionaire? Maybe we can get his kid to transfer to Cal, so he can graduate as an alumn and give us more money. Then we can hire Sark as our OC for 1 million, take back Lupoi for 750k a year + incentives, and Keiasu for whatever the fuck he wants.
Gosh; why the doom & gloom?
We just lost most of our coaching staff after a .500 year and a loss in a pinball bowl game, have a much less recognized recruiting class so far, and we (Husky fans) are mostly upbeat about the off season.
OK, we poached a couple position coaches; and BTW ucla and Alabama each poached one off of us. It happens in college ball, and if we had poached both your DC and LB coach (as we did from Tenn) then I would think you would have solid grounds for the meltdown.
Tedford hired good guys before, for what reason do you think he won’t go get another couple good guys?

“but”….excluding feelings here, Tosh didn’t get “a pay bump”…he got a pay increase of 300%! An increased responsiblity/title for resume-career building…He was also rumored to get a boat…which frankly sounds kinda funny if you leave out feelings for a moment..He also was in a no win situation as far as timing is concerned…if he waits till loi day? he’s a traitor to the yound men he lured to Cal…if he waits a year? the job likely isn’t still available…if he takes it with 2 weeks before loi day he’s blasted as a traitor? If we don't sell out Memorial next year against UW and score like 120-0 against them, it's all for naught
But knowing Cal it’ll be half empty and UW will deliver another last second loss and Tedford will be fired
In other words, Go Bears!
Timing...
I understand Lupoi leaving to coincide with the hiring of Wilcox, but Kiesau’s timing is more puzzling.
What are the rumors suggesting about Kiesau’s departure, was it just money? Or is he pissed because he got cut off in the parking lot by Tedford, or he didn’t like his new office in Memorial?
Grrrr…

The Husky football program is 100% free of public dollars and the school’s general budget. It is 100% self-sufficient. The new stadium upgrade is funded by 100% private donations. Also, Bill Gates is not booster.

huh? Are there any BCS football programs that don’t make money? Lots of ADs break even or lose money because football is funding other sports but football makes money pretty much everywhere.
He meant the entire athletic department.
There is no money coming from the UW’s general fund into the Athletic Department.
Look at it this way
Now they get 62000 a game, whereas if they start selling out all their games, the additional people will provide at least an additional $3 million in revenue per year. Cal hasn’t figured this sort of thing out yet, apparently.
Your stadium upgrades are being funded in large part through University issued bonds… which are borderline public bonds.
Right, that’s what I said. Here’s the funny thing about bonds, they have to be paid back priority… so if the revenue falls short (noooo, that never happens) then what?
Why didn’t the boosters step up to begin with? Why go with bonds if the moolah and good will was there?
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Welp
If you want to spin this as a sort-of positive, it’s that expectations will be sky high at UW for the next couple of seasons. Another 7-6 season won’t cut it. They’re going to have to win 10 games and win the North division a couple times after committing this much money.

I felt bad for them during the 0-12 campaign. I was cheering for them with a new coach and what not. And then the three losses in a row to them made it worse (and made them my 4th most hated team). But this easily vaults them up there as #1

Sandy and Tedford statements
http://calfootballblog.com/2012/01/17/statement-from-tedford-and-barbour/
HEAD COACH JEFF TEDFORD
"Tosh and Eric have decided to take other jobs, and we wish them the best. When people have career opportunities they make decisions based upon a wide array of reasons that are important to them. We appreciate their contributions to Cal football, and we exhausted all of our resources to try to retain Tosh and Eric within the confines and continuity of our coaching staff, but both chose to take advantage of new opportunities. We will proceed to replace them with quality coaches who will continue to stand for what the University of California and our football program represent, just as Tosh and Eric did."
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SANDY BARBOUR
"Tosh and Eric are outstanding football coaches that did a terrific job during their tenures on the Cal staff. We certainly valued everything they brought to our football program and appreciate their time with us. We did all we were able to do to have them remain at Cal and appreciate our community’s willingness to assist in that effort. We remain excited and confident about the direction of Cal football under the leadership of Jeff Tedford."

Again…Cal’s compensation to their coaches are in line with those of other public universities in the Pac-12 (with the exception of now UW).

Is the pool of other P12 public universities the relevant comparison? I mean, we don’t just play those teams, and we are theoretically competing for talent with the entire country.
Also, there are cost of living considerations in the Bay Area that affect the raw numbers.
I’m not opining on what’s fair or good or right. I’m not informed enough yet to feel strongly about what we should be paying our staff. But if the argument in the original post was that we are financially disadvantaged in hiring coaches, then there seems to be a wider array of factors to consider.
1) Yes because public and private schools have different levels of fundraising. Also, private schools don’t publish their AC’s salaries. There are also only 2 of them in the Pac-12.
2) Yes I agree with the cost of living thing but again, we’re not talking about a $50 or 100K difference
The Golden Bear is ever watching

Right. What I’m saying is if the reality is that private schools can pay coaches more, then that’s a competitive disadvantage and it’s something we have to deal with. Hopefully we can compete despite the disadvantage, but if it’s there, it has to be acknowledged.
also, we paid $321 million for a stadium and we can’t afford coaches?

Maybe some donors don’t feel the coaching staff is worth the $? With something like the SAHPC, at least it’ll be around for years and years – long term investment that will benefit many coaching staffs. I could easily see a donor not wanting to fork over $100k (or whatever size donation we’re talking about here) on a staff that’s fielded a mediocre team the last couple years….

This is what Cal gets
40 years of neglect. Not investing in football, not investing in the department, not outreaching to alumni, not doing things right at AT&T, not having enough donors to pony up and make these big investments. Everything that’s happened over the past two days is what happens when your school refuses to fully commit to football.
Washington is in the exact same situation. Expensive renovations, down team, bad recruiting. But they have donors willing to pony up and a school willing to spend. This shows how far we have to go as a program.
The SAHPC was a start. But the SAHPC isn’t going to coach this team.

that's the difference between us and the legacy programs
At legacy programs, donors give and give and give, regardless of whether they think the system is “broken,” because they believe that if they keep giving, they will buy influence. Or better seats, at least.
That and in many places (not Washington, necessarily), there’s no competition for the sports entertainment dollar.

So the question is, how does Sandy and Cal fix this?
As you said the SAHPC is a start but it isn’t going to coach this team. I am a little worried at who Tedford picks to replace these guys. The last time we had to fill a lot of coaching voids we ended up with Daft, Cognetfi, Ludwig and Marshall.
A coach is only as good as his staff and we have seen how bad things can get with some subpar coaches. Hopefully Tedford can find some diamonds in the rough but if we can’t afford to keep our own young up and coming coaches, how can we afford to hire someone else’s?
So that leaves us with older retread coaches who have bounced around with middling results (Marshall) or really young and unproven guys from smaller programs who may not work out.

I don't think it's entirely "neglect"
UW and Cal are entirely different places, and Seattle and the Bay Area are entirely different places. Also, as others have pointed out elsewhere, UW was really really good not too long ago.
I went to grad school at UW. Seattle is the kind of place where everybody is expected to sit in the same kayak, and talk up how great things are even if the kayak is about to go off a giant cliff. We’re too smart for that, and I love that.
I’m talking about a series of incompetent administrations that put football on the backburner (WAY on the backburner) to the point where we had decrepit facilities and constant coaching turnovers.
That in turn eroded the fanbase, when we probably should have one of the strongest donor groups in all of the Pac-12. We’re stuck having to make up for this.

Without going to USA Today, I believe the ratio of HC pay to all assistants was something like 1:1, which has allowed them to go out and get some talent (Coach M for a minute) and Nick Holt (had our number for a bunch of years!) at the assistant levels. Now they’re getting experienced, highly acclaimed D1 coaches who seemingly pair well with the younger-ish Sarkesian.
Not as much of a fan as the current “Cal model,” and that comment wasn’t in regards to Tedford’s abilities/performance. Frankly, we’re lucky Tosh and Gould have stuck around as long as they have.

That's a lot of money they're throwing around...
I really don’t like this salary escalation that UW is forcing down everyone’s throats.
USC, Texas, the SEC, and others have been doing it for years. I think we’re behind UCLA and UDub in terms of public universities. Even a school like Mizzou paid their assistants more, and of course cost of living blah blah blah

Here’s a good comparison:
“Doug Nussmeier’s hire has yet to be officially announced at Alabama as the new offensive coordinator at Alabama but that should happen soon. The Tuscaloosa News reports he should earn around $600,000 a year with the Tide.”
-$600K for an OC that lead a good offensive attack last year. (25th, 33.4pts/game overall in scoring)
“BearTerritory is reporting that Kiesau is leaving Cal to take a three-year deal at UW that would pay him roughly $700,000-800,000 a year.”
-More money by at least 100K for an WR coach shifting to OC that lead a mediocre offense last year (53rd, 28.3pts/game overall in scoring, but includes Presby. outlier)
Ummm… ok. but you gotta give props for Kiseau for getting paid big $$$ even though he was very much average.
Well, this helps the Huskies in 2 ways because it also screws us.

because I come a family of Cal grads (my dad was a pretty involved alumnus). I just think it’s a messed up situation as a whole, but that’s college football. I really don’t see these hires having a huge impact on our (UW) record this year because Sark is still a coach who makes some very questionable calls and the defense is absolutely terrible. I have no idea why any recruit would choose our school over Cal, but I am biased.

I’m glad they’re gone of that’s what it would have cost us to keep them. That said, I’d rather have kept them at their current positions. Everyone seems to think Clancy’s leaving, meaning Lupoi would have had his shot with a little more patience. Cal would have also had a couple more years to save up some money for his raise. But no way in hell would I support paying Lupoi over 3x as much to keep his same responsibilities. Keiasu is being grossly overpaid at UW. He came back to Cal from Colorado as a WR coach from being an OC for a reason — the position fit him better and he excelled at it. Looks like he’s going to have to learn the lesson twice. But at least he’s getting paid more to do it.
He came back to Cal from Colorado as a WR coach from being an OC for a reason
Well, it might have something to do with how he did as an occordinator, but the bigger factor was that the staff was fired. So…yeah, generally assistants need to find new jobs when their HC gets canned.
As for Tosh, he isn’t getting a promotion to dcoordinator, but they are making it sound like he’s getting more responsibility in the position at UW – he’s getting some coordinator responsibility.

We might be calling for Kiesau and Lupoi to be fired. This is a lot like the Nick Holt hiring. We grossly overpaid him and the fans quickly turned on him. Husky football fans are really quick to judge and not forgiving.

A web site that follows Cal, BearTerritory.com, reports that Kiesau is leaving to take a three-year deal at UW worth $700,000-800,000 and will be the offensive coordinator for the Huskies. (And to clarify, this could be the total on the deal, not what he would be making annually).

I think UDub looks around and says, we need to be better than Cal and, not only that, we need to step on their throats as much as possible so we can take annual swings at the Pac12 crown. That involves getting extremely strong in CA recruiting and making life hell for a CA team like Cal. Out of any team in the conference, I’d say UW is most like Cal.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

I could see UW figuring out who they should try to beat, and picking Cal based on Pac-12 North, California recruiting, not-being-Oregon, etc.

I wasn’t around to experience this, but when UW was awesome, USC and UCLA were a) down and b) UW was recruiting SoCal very well? Even Willingham was a CA guy. Makes sense to think they’re looking for a strong foothold in CA if they ever want to return to the Fuskies of old.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I agree that UW and Cal are the most similar schools in the conference.
I’ve always rooted for Cal after UW, and likely still will. I can understand why you all might not feel the same.
I have no idea what your point is, other than (perhaps) make an excuse for UW.
My feeling is basically this: I don’t mind our coaches getting better jobs (or better-paying jobs) and improving their life. That’s great.
But the timing on these is clear: UW wasn’t just after our coaches, their potential, and filling holes in the UW program. The timing was designed to also steal recruits from us for THIS CLASS. In fact, I would wager that was a major concern.
So, in a sense, it’s another version of Pay to Play. It’s underhanded, it’s sleazy, it’s unethical, and it sucks.
But so what, right? They can do it, so they did. Still don’t make it kosher.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
What makes you think we would make these hires for just 3 or 4 recruits?
Do you think we should have waited until after signing day to hire all of our coaches? How does that make any sense? I’m not exactly sure when you think coaches can switch jobs without it being sleazy.
Timing
If it was all about the coaches, why not wait and either try and buy them after LOI day, or perhaps make the announcement then?
Look, congrats to you guys for buying the coaches. You must all be very proud. But don’t try selling that nonsense about the timing being just a coincidence, because it simply doesn’t fly.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
Waiting til after LOI day would be a slap at the recruits and would be opposite of the norm of what is a relatively common occurrence (coach swapping)
Don’t you think?
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
By that logic, a coach could never leave, because he’s always beholden to the players in some way.
It seems to me that a coach leaving a week or two after LOI day is no more a slap in the face to the players than if he leaves before spring camp opens, midway through a season, or immediately after a bowl game.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
agreed. but I think it might be a slap in the face if the coach were to leave in the middle of the game, in the middle of a play, right after slapping a few players in the face. So, at least that didn’t happen.

We need coaches to recruit and such too.
Can you imagine how much crap Sark would get if we didn’t hire new coaches until after signing day? Sark didn’t do this attempting to screw Cal over, that’s just a by product of doing what’s best for UW (hiring coaches as soon as possible).

Can you imagine how much crap Sark would get if we didn’t hire new coaches until after signing day?
In other words, it was important to sign the coaches before signing day because the hires impacted recruiting. How is that different than my point that the only reason the hires were done now was to benefit recruiting?
Sark didn’t do this attempting to screw Cal over, that’s just a by product of doing what’s best for UW (hiring coaches as soon as possible).
Giving Sarksleazian the benefit of the doubt here, I’ll accept that he didn’t do this with the express and sole intent of screwing the Cal football program over. But there is no way he didn’t realize that these coaches had good relationships with very highly touted recruits whom he coveted, and that hiring these two specific coaches (as opposed to, say, the Oregon D-Line coach, or the receivers coach from Utah) had a potential to influence those recruits.
All in all it seems to back my initial contention that the timing of these hires was specifically designed to purposefully try and also win these recruits. If Sark couldn’t get them in the previous months, he’ll try now by buying their main recruiters.
Basically, you seem to agree with me, and your conclusion is “tough break, Cal.”
Just seems a bit sleazy to me.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
I believe that Sark decided he wanted Tosh and Kiesau for these positions without thinking about what recruits they would bring this year.
Once he decided who he wanted it was in our best interest to try and get them as quickly as possible, because we need as much recruiting power as possible.
Is Shaq or Payton really worth $3,000,000? That’s about how much we’ve garunteed Tosh and Kiealu will be making. I don’t think Sark was thinking in terms of individual recruits when he made his decision.
Shaq and Payton are probably worth a few hundred grand by themselves, maybe more over four years. Plus Tosh and Kiesau are good coaches, which is apparently worth several hundred thousand a year. Plus whatever other recruits they get over the next few years…

Depends on the recruit
De’Anthony Thomas will likely have been worth millions to the UO athletic department by the time he leaves.
Well, yeah. I mean, your coach is supposedly worth more than he is making in salary, right? If there were no excess value generated then it wouldn’t be worthwhile for the institution.
Put it this way. If your program is generating $35-40 million, then what do you think the value of a star player is?

Cal is probably going to beat UW next year. Huge holes on the Husky offensive line, the loss of Chris Polk, and the joke of a defense + Cal’s number 1 defense (with most starters returning) = Maynard just has to not screw up.

For being a UW student it seems like you didn't watch that many UW games.
The O-line will be decent and while losing Polk hurts, we have plenty of capable running backs.
Watch the Oregon and USC games. The OL was inconsistent all year. Callier and Cooper are definitely not the same as Polk.
They aren't the same, but they aren't neccesarily a huge drop off either.
That inconsistent OL didn’t stop our offense from being great (against average to above average teams). Obviously it could be better, but I don’t think it is the huge weakness you are making it out to be.
Kelemete is gone and Tanigawa is coming off a torn ACL. They did fairly well at blocking against below average-average lines, but I really think next years Cal DL is going to be the best in the conference.

I guess the way I’d put it is that OL is essential to great QB. So I will add that Michalczik remains on the staff, and that Tagaloa reconfirmed his commitment last night.
i’d say having a good OL makes it really easy to have average to above average QB play. and if we could get Pac-12 average QB play consistently, we would’ve won a lot more games recently.

The balance of power shifts to the Northwest
Greetings to the Bear nation from a snowy white Seattle. I have been looking over some of your kind comments sent our direction and must admit I feel your pain. I’ve always been a fan of Cal and hope you guys can make life hell for Oregon and USC. Unfortunately this is the current state of affairs for college football. Money talks and it seems we have a bunch up here because our boosters have decided to open their wallets just a bit wider after our defensive nightmare against Baylor. Sark has been rather greedy in rebuilding a rather weak defensive staff to almost biblical proportions in less than 2 weeks. The new “Dream Team” in college coaching is how SI referred to it. New defensive coordinator from Tennessee along with his best friend who just happened to be the top recruiter at Tennessee. The top recruiter at Oregon State. The top recruiter at Cal and now just to twist it a bit more the 2nd best recruiter at Cal. I’m beginning to see a pattern here just 2 weeks before signing day…
That having been said, we still have to play the games. So, there’s that.

I gotta say this: I have to hand it to Sark and the Huskies. They knew what they wanted, had the money, made an aggressive play and came out on top. Well played. They managed to lure away two of Cal’s best recruiters and position coaches, thereby strengthening their staff and ability to recruit while weakening an in-division conference foe. Gutsy and shrewd. It’s like Microsoft or Google hiring away Jony Ive and Scott Forstall away from Apple.
I also can’t blame Kiesau or Lupoi for leaving. That kind of money is life-changing and they are only looking out for their (and their families’) best interests. It’s too bad that they are leaving to an in-division conference opponent (it may have hurt less had they gone to Florida or Texas or Ohio State), but it is perfectly reasonable to understand their motivation.
At this point, I think that we should all take a deep breath and remember, college football is just a game played by 18 to 23 year olds. The sun will rise tomorrow. I can see how perhaps Tedford and Barbour probably could have tried to preempt this kind of thing from happening, but in the end, we probably couldn’t have matched the money from UW.
I think what will be important to note is how Sandy and Tedford bounce back from this and respond. Is it more of the same or is something done to retain the valuable pieces we have left (Coach M, Gould) and bring in some new talent.
Take a look at what happened to the Bruins this off-season. Mora Jr. was hired and everyone over at BN went ape-shit. But he’s quietly put together a good staff, has done a great job of recruiting and things are looking up for them.
These changes present us with an opportunity. Look at what happened with the baseball team last year — they were on their way to being eliminated, but then their fortunes changed with some hard work and perseverance.
Let’s wait a few days to let the dust settle. February 1 will come eventually and we’ll end up with a class we can all be proud of. Let’s remember that our football team is representing the best public university in the world and that’s something that we should continue to be proud of, more so than the number of five star recruits we can attract.
I understand the frustration here. I’m feeling down about it as much as the rest of you are, but I’m trying to maintain some perspective. It’s not the end of the world.

"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I think that the Federal Government percentage has increased more recently. I seem to recall an article saying that Cal now receives more money from the Federal Government than from the State of California.
As it gets more funding from the federal government and less from Sacramento, UC Berkeley is effectively morphing from a state university into a federal university, according to Chancellor Robert Birgeneau.
It's really not the end of the world
It’s a blow, and we will lose talent, but there have been teams in this coach’s administration that have had wonderful seasons with recruits that were less heralded than the ones we’ll be putting on the field for the next several years.
I do think it’s a critical time for the Tedford era. There’s more than enough raw material here to build a quality product, despite the setbacks. But whether that will happen or not is an open question, given the results of the last several years.
Nevertheless, the current state of affairs still looks quite good compared to the average over my lifetime as a Bear fan. If the trajectory isn’t going to be quite as smooth as I was expecting, I’m still going to try to appreciate it. There’s nothing better than a Saturday afternoon in Memorial Stadium. We should be grateful to have that in our lives again. Go Bears.

Cal has been a doormat for 50 years
Because of this attitude. We just got bent by a conference rival and Bear Backers just throw up there hands and say “let’s just take a deep breath”.
We are moving into new $300 million stadium. Why do we have the 2nd lowest assistant payroll in the Pac? Why is JT making over $2 million and his most productive assistant $160k?
JT, Sandy and Birgeanau has plenty of explaining to do. I want specifics. Don’t let them off the hook.

I mean his resume could be better but his defenses at Boise were great. Even though Boise played a weak schedule the defense held up when they played BCS teams.
His defense this past year at Tennessee was ranked 27th in total defense and 36th in scoring defense, which sounds good to me considering Cal’s roster on the defensive side is more loaded than Tennessee’s roster.
Wilcox seems like the best coordinator with west coast ties, lets just take him now.

Well I am moving on from being mad
I am ready for Tedford to fill these positions, sign a recruiting class and keep it moving.
Are we going to have a top 10 recruiting class still? No and we probably won’t have a top 25 class as well. However, we should have a good group of kids coming in, along with the last two good classes that we have brought in so the immediate future looks a lot brighter than the past.
All Cal can do is beat UW with the kids we have and go to a Rose Bowl.
You’re so right. When the UW wins the Rose Bowl the kids will come…to Seattle! We have not won the Rose Bowl in 10 years but with the NCAA coming down with new rules just before they announce Oregon’s many violations that will hopefully chop the legs off the worst fans in the country I think that will change soon.

Also this puts a lot of pressure on Sleezy Sark and this staff
UW is in win now mode and if they don’t produce a Pac12 champion within the next 4 years somebody is getting fired.
You don’t pay out all of this money for 7-7 or 8-4 seasons.
I’m thinking if he doesn’t make significant strides and plays in at least in Pac 12 championship in the next 2 years, he’s gone. They’ve given him everything he can ask for (new coaches, new stadium, loads of cash), so he’s absolutely out of excuses. His situation is similar to being the manager at Man City (yes, a soccer reference). “Here’s everything you wanted and asked for. Win or get fired.”

By any measure Tosh was a great recruiter, which is why the underperforming can be underperforming in the first place. Also, by and large his area of coaching has been a strength.
Kiesau is a minor loss as a coach, and being upset is more the potential loss of recruits, another member of the staff who can relate to high school players, and the general hangover from yesterday.

"overpaying" for coaches
It’s not clear to me that UW is “overpaying” for coaches. Rather, I think that the Pac-12 coaching salary structure is starting to adjust to the new influx of TV dollars. It started with the head coaches (see the new hires) and now it’s trickling down to assistants.
It’s too bad we weren’t more proactive about adjusting salaries first, but it’s possible that budget/political realities made this impossible for us. But I bet everyone in the Pac-12 is paying their assistants 2x their current salary in a few years.
Good point. I just hope they’re overpaying.
Cal Football: I loved them once and they broke my heart. Let that be a lesson to you. Never love anything.
by CalBandGreat on Jan 17, 2012 3:18 PM PST up reply actions
To me, the question of overpaying for Kiesau isn’t his salary in the abstract, it’s paying that amount of money to someone with his record. I get that this is pretty much what they had to pay, given what Wilcox is making, so maybe it’s just a matter of whether they made the right choice or were disproportionately attracted to the idea of getting some quick recruits and pillaging a conference rival.
I think Tosh is worth every penny of what he’s making.
As a Coug, I'd just like to say welcome to hating UW.

Man, you guys are making this too easy. It sounds like you just got the death penalty. We lost two coaches ourselves in the last three weeks and what did we do? Go and get new coaches. Geez, guys…this isn’t anything new. Buck up!

Frankly, if I were Sark, I would’ve gone after Gould instead of Kiesau.
In NFL at one point or another
Gould: Echemandu, Arrington, Lynch, Forsett, Best, Vereen
Kiesau: Jackson, Hawkins, McKnight (Colorado)
Don’t give him any ideas! Haven’t we given them enough these days?
