BREAKING NEWS: Cal DLine Coach Tosh Lupoi To Join Washington Husky Staff
Per the official UW site, the bad news:
Tosh Lupoi has been named defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator at Washington, Husky head coach Steve Sarkisian announced today.
Lupoi comes to Washington from California where he spent the last four years as defensive line coach.
"Coach Lupoi is a terrific young coach and a dynamic recruiter," Sarkisian said. "He will have an immediate impact with our team both on the field and in recruiting."
Lupoi was the youngest full-time coach in Cal history when he joined the staff at the age of 26 in 2008 and remained the youngest Pac-10 coach for two additional seasons. In all, he was associated with Cal football for 12 years having spent six as a Golden Bear player (2000-05, including an extra season due to the granting of a medical redshirt), two as a graduate assistant (2006-07) and four as defensive line coach.
This seems like the opposite of good.

I could totally be wrong
but I cannot imagine that Cal couldn’t pony up an offer close to that. Tedford basically entrusted the guy with all his top recruits.

I know the athletic department has been strapped for cash
But I find it difficult to believe that the school couldn’t find 350k out of the 10+ million they’d be receiving in the new Pac-12 media deal.

I’m sure some divide with Tedford played into this, but I don’t think he would’ve left Cal just because of the HC (given his ties and all)

Think a little broader
Like how paying an assistant coach (not a coordinator) affects the salary structure of the entire coaching staff. And how it would be received by:
(1) Faculty and Staff
(2) Alumni who contribute to the academic side of the house
(3) Administration
(4) Students
(5) the Board of Regents
to say nothing of the public when state support for the academic side of the university is dropping and looks to be threatened even more with the warning that more budget cuts are coming.
Seriously. What were the realistic choices?

As a public school teacher as well as a Cal Alum, I agree...
…my wife, a school principal, seeing my reaction to the initial news, reminded me of how bad it seems to be a in Washington State public school, seeing the news that a public university in the state has the cash to pay 1/2 a million dollars to a football assistant coach…

Expect more of this . . . actually not trying to be harsh, it’s just that the Pac-12 is stepping up in the coaching competition.

true, but other people don’t have emotional attachments to their other’s jobs like they do in sports.
In any business and profession there is a right way and a wrong way to leave your job. Timing your departure so that it will do the maximum possible harm to the employer you are leaving is never the right way.

Leaving now potentially harms Cal’s recruiting class. But leaving after LOI day means he was deceiving those recruits.
He’s in a no-win situation.

He should have left well before LOI day, or stayed through the season. That might be inconvenient for him, but it would have been right. Sure, in the business world many people act without integrity, just as in the sports world many people act without integrity. That does not make it right, and I, for one, do not respect such people.
Of course, the point can be made that the UW offer might not have made until right before LOI day, and that it might not be there if he waited until after the season. But all that means is that UW is also without integrity. If I received a job offer from a new employer that was contingent on me screwing my current employer, I would not accept it, because an employer who wants me to screw someone else will be more than willing to screw me when it decides that’s in its interest.

It helps to elaborate on your point and provide supporting evidence/examples. I’m just not seeing why you’re so offended by this move. I completely understand not being happy about it, as you root for Cal football and this is not a good thing for Cal football, but you seem to think there was some fundamental problem with this move, and so far, I’m just not seeing where you’re coming from. People leave one job for another that offers a significant raise all the time. I know I’d love a job offer for 3x what I’m making now. What’s wrong with taking that?

Just to be clear – are you saying that Tosh was recruiting for UW while on a recruiting visit for Cal? Or just that you find it objectionable to try to steal Shaq away even after he took the UW job?
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 10:45 PM PST up reply actions
the former. since he hadn’t accepted the job from UW, he was still working (and being paid) by Cal. To then suggest to the recruit he should come visit him at UW is very bad form.
I agree that’s very bad form if it happened. From the info we have, though, it appears he didn’t talk to Syd about a visit on behalf of UW until after he took the UW job, so it’s at least a little different than that.

Granted, people have too much emotion wrapped up in this and professional sports. But it’s fairly reasonable to feel wronged.

that's just silly ...
The UW was trying to fill a position as quickly as possible after it was vacated from a house cleaning/firing of their entire defensive coaching staff.. They pursued Lupoi and they got him. To claim that they should have waited until after the season (didn’t the season just end?) or “well before LOI” day in order to retain your mythical bar of “integrity” is bizarrely nonsensical.
This is naturally the time when football coaches and assistants are poached away … after the season ends fires and hires are made immediately, if they are going to be made at all. It’s not like Cal was blindsided, and Lupoi had to have given Tedford a chance to retain him.
Teddy obviously feels that he can succeed without him.
reading somewhere else, Tosh had thought of this last year, when his position coach @Cal, Justin Wilcox was considered a DC for texas. It was learned that he would only leave Cal if he was offered an additional title = leading to a pay raise. None was forthcoming. Wilcox had left Cal to become DC @Boise State, then became DC @tennessee last year. udub (sark) house cleaned the defense coaches and hired Wilcox as DC. Sark offered $500 Million, D-line coach and the additional title. I also think he wanted to rejoin Wilcox. He was deciding about his decision as late as last night.
$500 million? Jesus Christ that’s a lot of money!

I don’t think Cal should spend $500,000 on a position coach. It’s not reasonable. It’s just another piece of evidence that college football has become the NFL minor leagues where money rules everything. I support Sandy if she nixed that price for Tosh. UW is a public school, and they have to justify massive salaries, too. I wonder how that will go, when they come to the University of Washington asking for more money.

You’re imputing emotion and morality judgments where there should be none. The salary of football coaches at all levels have gone up because successful coaches make up for it in success and ticket sales. It’s fairly simple economics. It is neither good nor bad.
It’s interesting thinking about whether he’s worth the money or not and I’m willing to accept both arguments. For me, he’s not worth it as a coach, however, it might have been worth $350K to avoid this PR disaster.
To evaluate his worth only on his responsibilities as a "coach" is incomplete ...
The responsibility is recruiting is just as important if not more to the qualifications of a college coach today. In assessing whether Lupoi is worth the additional 350k annually as a coach, this must be also considered as well. The 2010 Rivals.com Recruiter of the Year award confirmed what many coaches in the conference had long already knew. When it came to recruiting Tosh had no rival. His ability to land Cal top 5 star recruits across the country in spite of its mediocre success on the field was unrivaled.
In this sense I’m not sure how anyone can claim the wasn’t worth the extra 350k a year as a coach/recruiter. He made a discernible difference in the talent level that he brought to Cal, which positively affects the bottom line W/L record.
If Teddy can’t win with what Lupoi brought him, I’m not sure how he expects to compete now.

Scent of bridge burning. This guy goes from a great local story of Loyalty, Passion and Principle to just another of many “what’s in it for me” people. He can and will be replaced—but he will never be able to replace the TRUST he attempted to peddle on behalf of a great school and team!
Once Sarkisian takes UW down the SC sanction path—Lupoi will probably just bounce around from program to program with less and less ability to peddle what we now know to be BS.
I would bet he never sets foot in a Cal facility again.
Hopefully recruits of the future will choose Cal for the right reasons—Team, Education, Opportunity…not to mention a chance to define the legacy of a brand new $100MM stadium and athletic facility for generations to come.
One Certainty: Cal football will continue to one of the premiere programs in the country!!!

because it would be a d*ck move to lie to a recruit saying you will be there for the next 4 years only to bail AFTER they have signed the LOI and are stuck at Cal. it gives the recruits the time to re-evaluate whether they chose Cal for the program and university as a whole or to play for Tosh.

Are you aware of the recruiting class Cal was about to land? In addition to the listed commits Rivals has right now (which includes guys like Payton/Dozier/Shaq), it looked like a good bet that Cal was going to land Armstead/Shittu/McCarthy, and was a serious contender for top recruits like Diggs, Hamilton, Yuri Wright, DJ Foster, Thomas Johnson, Markuss Eligwe, David Perkins, Joey O’Connor….this move looks like it could derail a historic recruiting class for Cal. Having returning talent is obviously a good thing, but losing incoming talent is still something worth being disappointed about.

Probably right after the end of the regular season, when round 1 of the firings start, or right after bowl season. But I’m not sure that there are many times when coaches aren’t out recruiting, and they probably don’t line up well with the playing season.

Then HE's being used....
……yes, it’s for a lot more money, but he could have waited and gone some place else more ethical for just as much, if Cal weren’t willing to match (or partially match). Washington is at least as interested in screwing us over as getting a good recruiter.
Because that’s when job changes happen. He didn’t leave the recruits hanging – they still have a couple weeks to re-evaluate things and change their mind if they want to. It might not be ideal for them, but it’s better than the day before LOI day, or after they’ve already signed their LOI and can’t go elsewhere. And then for Tosh, realistically, this is when jobs are available. Waiting doesn’t seem like a very prudent move to me – all the jobs will be gone if he waits.

Second, fans should withhold judgment before they get all the facts. Yikes. I am guessing that Tosh was worried about stability in Tedford’s status but when you recruit like he does. He probably got close to seven figures if not more which is a lot for a 20-something non-coordinator coach and hard to pass but his obvious value is way more than that. Oh boy. Tosh has done nothing but show loyalty to the program. At some point he had to do what was best for him. No reason to flame him. I’ve been hearing from someone who dates a Cal coach that Tosh and other coaches really don’t like Tedford. This started a year ago, but Tosh stayed because his allegiance to Cal trumped it.

WTF
Tedford is the one that gave Tosh a chance…the guy is 29! How many 29 year coaches do you see on a college football side line. He gave Tosh the job at 26!
Tedford tabbed Lupoi to succeed Ken Delgado as defensive line coach in January 2008 after six straight winning seasons in Berkeley. Before the job landed in his lap at age 26, Lupoi played and coached under Delgado, who left for Louisville and now coaches at Eastern Michigan. Delgado had no doubts about his replacement.
During Lupoi’s time on the staff under Delgado, Tedford often slept in his office four nights a week. When the coach stumbled out in search of a late-night drink of water, Tedford usually noticed the kid. Still at work.
“You could tell it was a passion,” Tedford said. "I think some people who become [graduate assistants] are kind of searching, deciding if they really want to do it or not.

I get that he wanted to move up, but I don’t see how D line coach + “defensive run game coordinator” is really that much of a move up. I’m sure he’s tired of waiting, but it always seemed like he had a chance of moving on to DC at Cal sooner than later.

I think that’s simplifying things a bit. Tosh’s departure could reflect on the football program as a whole, depending on the actual reasons why he left, and whether or not Cal was able to (or could) match Washington’s offer.
i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*
But, it’s even more simplistic to say “Tosh leaves? No more money for football program!”

Again, assuming that Cal somehow had a realistic and financially feasible opportunity to keep Tosh here and failed to do so, I don’t know if I’d want to contribute money to the program anymore either for such a significant mistake.

Where is that assumption from? Everything I’ve ever seen in the last few years about Cal Athletics has been that it’s broke. Plus, there’s only a finite amount of donation money out there, which has had to pay for SAHPC / Memorial.

I think ASTQB was saying that if they had the money, he’d quit buying tickets.
It’s logical from the point of view of no longer financially supporting an institution that ASTQB feels doesn’t properly allocate its funds. Although I don’t agree, it’s “logical” to stop giving money to them if you think they’re going to misuse it anyway.
Exactly
It’s tough because we’ll never know details. I want to know they are committed to winning and are at least trying. Tosh was the main evidence out program was going in the right direction…now?

Even if it were true that Cal made a big mistake of some sort with Tosh, would that really enough to make you give up on Cal football forever? That seems to be a very extreme point of view. Really? If I’m 29, $170K is a shitload of money to me (that’s half the difference). Dude’s now making as much as DJax makes playing for the Eagles. That probably exceeds his wildest dreams for this time of his life by quite a lot.

I was one of the many that thought Tosh was indispensable. Hopefully we did everything we could to keep him. I hope he didn’t leave because we fucked up. That being said, It should be clear to everyone that this is part of the business and the culture of the sport. No one is exempt. If everyone is going around saying that Tedford needs to win in 12’ or possibly loose his job it would make sense for Tosh to look after his long terms goals and bail ship while the offer was there assuming it was a ton of cash and a better tittle. I still think the timing could not have come at a worst time. Tosh could have ended what he started and what he was to this point accomplishing, a monster recruiting class. He could have been national recruiter of the year and been an even greater asset going into 13’. Hes stock was going to rise, if anything and he could have gone anywhere he wanted after next season. We wanted to believe that his loyalty and love for Cal would trump any financial offer or tittle and we were wrong. It’s a business and think we should have known this all along. The good thing is that we are still Cal and have the academics, location, fan base, best facilities ect. We can’t totally ignore that the new facilities didn’t give us huge boost and made a lot of the top level recruits give us a look. I can’t believe it would be an improbable task to find another person to come in and given all we now have to offer not be able to hep us get to where we want to go. According to Gorcey, we didn't do everything to keep him
With the Bears seemingly unwilling to add a title such as recruiting coordinator on to Lupoi’s duties as defensive line coach — and the raise that would go along with that title — Washington was able to entice him away with not only more money than his current contract, but with the additional title of defensive run game coordinator.

The first contrasting background-to-coordinator example i can think of is the Eagles’ O-line coach becoming D-coordinator. Not sure that worked very well though.

But playing LB to coaching Dline (with no prior coaching experience as far as I know, could easily be wrong there though), is a pretty decent jump

Wow. A Cal fan complaining about the NCAA, yet bragging about its academics
Funny, how on one hand Cal fans have their noses in the air, with Cal’s academic rankings and all.
Yet, YOUR OWN HEAD COACH went to upper campus, threatened to quit, unless enterance requirements were lowered, transfer credits allowed, and credits allowed for classes such as “physical education”, and what not.
It’s a joke. Cal doesn’t compete with UW academically in terms of RECRUITS. Tedford threatened to walk, so Cal dropped it’s standards to keep him, and ATTEMPT to make its program relevant.
Just look at your DT Coleman who attended high 3 MILES from Husky Stadium. UW would NOT let him in, but Cal would.
Yeah, great ‘academics’ there.
And Tedford’s an asshole, anyway. Biggest underachiever in the conference the past decade.
UW has NFL QB after NFL QB, and 2 of the top 11 in the 2012 class coming in. Their Offensive Coordinator was JUST HIRED by the National Champs. And they took TN’s Defensive Coordinator. who Texas and Mack Brown tried to hire.
Lupoi will have a pretty strong message for recruits: “Hell, I graduated from Cal. I played at Cal. I coached at Cal. And I STILL – I STILL – left and chose UW. You should, too.”

I hate when facts get in the way of a good trolling
Using an academic version of a football playbook, Tedford has taken the shockingly poor graduation rate of Cal football players and raised it closer to that of schools like Northwestern and Stanford, which played Cal on Saturday in the 112th Big Game.
The latest evidence of his success came last week, when fresh data released by the NCAA showed nearly three-quarters of Tedford’s first recruiting class graduated – a 48-percent increase over the team’s average from the previous decade.
"Tedford has changed the way the football players look at being student-athletes," said physics professor Robert Jacobsen, who also serves on Cal’s athletic admissions committee.
The graduation rates are also the longest-standing measure, thus the only means of comparing Cal’s academic performance under Tedford to that of his predecessors.
"Jeff took a new approach and a very good approach – and he got instant results," said Santa Clara University athletic director Dan Coonan, a former Cal administrator who helped hire Tedford. "He’s made the student-athletes accountable, and that’s had a terrific impact."
These are the highlights of the latest report. All figures refer to freshmen who entered school in the fall of 2002, Tedford’s first year as coach:
* 71 percent of the Cal football players went on to graduate within the allotted six-year window. That’s close to the rate for all of Cal’s male student-athletes (78 percent).
* Cal’s players graduated at a much higher rate than the national average for major college football players (55 percent). Just a few years ago, the Bears were below the national average.
* The graduation rate for African-American players, who make up the majority of Cal’s roster, was 67 percent. That’s 20 points higher than the major college average and two points higher than Cal’s overall graduation rate for black male students.

Lupoi left for 3x the salary. Don’t fool yourself into thinking anything else about Seattle or the UW program played a role in his decision. If WSU offered him the same salary, he’d be there right now.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking anything else about Seattle or the UW program played a role in his decision.
Well, why does this necessarily have to be the case. It could possibly be true that he wanted the $ and ALSO found some aspects of UW worthwhile that a school like WSU might not offer. For example, there’s a definite chance his reputation as a recruiter would take a significant hit at WSU because, really, who wants to go to WSU? Whereas UW actually has some appeal.
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 2:37 PM PST up reply actions
This makes no sense to me...
…..if he’s worth that much to UW he’s worth that much elsewhere, and he would have been after the season was over. And he quite likely could have done better. So that begs the question…..why now? Had he pulled in the class he did here at Cal he could have done even better, most likely.
Hmmm? Why do you think he could have done better? He’s getting a huge salary for a position coach, this is generally the time when most coaching changes happen….

Real Huskies don't throw rocks at other Pac-12 A.A.U. schools, especially not at the
best public university in the country.
Wanna mock their football team; go ahead. Wanna mock their academics; ho home!
We are proud to share the long time Pacific Coast academic tradition w/ Cal, Stanford, Oregon, UCLA and USC. Later additions Arizona Colorado share this distinction. Each of these schools has a demonstratedcommitment to academic and rsearch excellence, and the requisite support to maintain that tradition.
The Pac-12 also has a fine tradition of supporting non-revenue sports, especially Olympic sports. Stanford has an outstanding overall sports achievement record.

This reminds me of that part when Beane wants Ricardo Rincon and the owner is not willing to pay for him so Beane pays for him out of his own pocket.
If the Athletic Department was not willing to pay the extra 350K, Tedford should have offered to take a 350K pay cut.

Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
I obviously don’t know enough about the Athletic Dept’s budget to know for sure, but common sense says it would work. If you have $X amount allocated for football coaching salaries HC and assistants, removing $350-400K from Tedford’s salary and adding it to Lupoi’s would keep $X the same.
This would all be done on the up-and up because I know some coaches just got in trouble for paying assistants out of their own pocket. The only tricky part I see in this is what the other assistant coaches on staff think about it.

One positive (if you can call it that) is that we won’t have to counter-recruit to him, as much as we have to let every other recruiter in the nation talk about how without a word, Tosh left his alma mater and professed home two weeks before NSD, taking a massive dump on the program in the process.

Possible Hypothesis
(1) UW Approaches Tosh with awesome offer.
(2) Tedford, Sandy, et all. rally and give Tosh a great counter offer.
(3) Tosh agrees to Cal’s terms in principle.
(4) With Tedford away, Tosh takes off.
As an engineering manager, this seems like the most likely scenario to me. There have been a few times I thought I had successfully counteroffered to a guy only to have him leave anyway.
This
no reason why Tedford would leave if he knew that Tosh was going to bolt.

(1) Why didn’t Cal counter? (They did)
(2) Did Cal let him go because they had a replacement? (Nope, they thought they were good)

According to Rivals
Lupoi would only leave Berkeley — the school he grew up with, and the school for which he played — for an additional title.
With the Bears seemingly unwilling to add a title such as recruiting coordinator on to Lupoi’s duties as defensive line coach — and the raise that would go along with that title — Washington was able to entice him away with not only more money than his current contract, but with the additional title of defensive run game coordinator.
Why couldn’t we just add him that title? I mean, we did that last year with passing game coordinator and run game coordinators.
This seems so absolutely absurd.

but this sounds like a spin job. Tedford would have given him any title he wanted. It doesnt mean a thing. To say that this was the reason for this is completely asinine.
Cain is Able ...
Yea
we already have a passing game coordinator, run game coordinator, and offensive coordinator attached to the various offensive positional coaches. He isn’t apprehensive about giving meaningless titles.
Actually, I know those titles sound meaningless, but from what I’ve read they’re actually fairly accurate. The offensive coordinator responsibilities really are split up multiple ways like that.
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 2:38 PM PST up reply actions
If he wanted a better title, i’m assuming he wanted a real title. Giving a guy a “run game coordinator” title only in title means nothing to Tosh. Tosh would obviously really want input on defending the run. This would come as an infringement upon Pendergast’s job. Perhaps Pendergast wouldn’t like this infringement, and perhaps Tedford knew this and that’s why Tedford didn’t want to do it.
I don’t think it’s so simple as giving a guy a new title. It’s about giving a guy a new job and more responsibility — responsibility that is already someone else’s and whom that someone else may not want to share or give up.

Doesnt Sandy have a few Bear backers, the same who paid for SAHPC, cell phone ready when somebody is poaching all our recruiting hope? Seems like we’re back to friends and family (please help SyD) recruiting w/o Tosh.

WOW
how does UW have so many boosters willing to throw money at a mediocre program the last 5 years and a terrible one before that the past 10 years?
Wilcox- >$700k ( he got 700k at tenesse, unless he REALLY likes the rain in Seattle, he probably got a hefty raise in a lateral move)
Tosh- $500k (speculation)
Holt- $600k still owed for getting fired…
unless they take the north + Pac12 in 1-2 years (doubt it) it’s a money black hole
not to mention the many other coaches they still have to pay
UW was really really good in the 1990s under slick Rick.

Longer
However, the winless streaks of 13 years (1983–1995, including the 1994 17–17 tie) to rival Notre Dame and 8 years (1991–1998) to crosstown rival UCLA were unacceptable to many USC supporters. In 1998, head coach Paul Hackett took over the team, but posted an even more disappointing 19–18 record in three seasons. By 2000, some observers surmised that USC football’s days of national dominance were fading; the football team’s record of 37–35 from 1996 to 2001 was their second-worst over any five-year span in history (only the mark of 29–29–2 from 1956–1961 was worse), and the period marked the first and only time USC had been out of the final top 20 teams for four straight years.
Neuishel was 35-16 and left in 2002.

no, i’m trying to say that Pete Carroll had almost an immediate impact (minus 1st transition year) at SC, and unlike Sark, built a program that while annoying, won a lot of games (83–19, w/o subtracting vacated wins) it just seems that UW is trying to fix the problem that they’re not competing for a Pac12 championship by throwing wads and wads of cash Sark’s way to use when in truth, it doesn’t seem like Sark has earned it IMO
Throwing wads and wads of cash sometimes does fix the problem. See: Alabama.

Cal Assistant Saleries
Via USA Today here is our assistant coaching salaries for 2011. If Lupoi would of been paid a base salary of 500k, he would have been making more than anyone except Tedford. I think if Cal would of wanted to meet UWs offer, they would have had to pay everyone more, it might have meant another 1 or 2 mil a year in coaching salaries.
First number is the base salary, then the max bonus for each coach.
Clancy Pendergast $245,000 $204,100
Jim Michalczik $207,000 $102,000
Jeff Genyk $174,000 $40,500
Ron Gould $164,000 $75,000
Eric Kiesau $164,000 $84,000
Tosh Lupoi $164,000 $75,000
Kenwick Thompson $164,000 $75,000

Right. So he had time to keep one kid completely updated, obviously since he was planning on poaching him. No one else mattered enough to even tell “Hey guys, I might be gone next week.”
So he had time to keep one kid completely updated
Yes, that’s what it looks like. Apparently he was taking a home visit to Shaq. Do you know the details of this home visit? Why was he taking it? Was he doing it on behalf of the Cal coaching staff, and came clean with Shaq about his own personal intentions? Knowing these kinds of details matter. Here’s one potential narrative – he went there to recruit Shaq for Cal, but had to be honest about what was going on with him. Now, he’s in Sactown, drives home late, makes an early morning decision to take the UW job, and so far, hasn’t had a chance to talk to many people about it. I have no idea if any of these details are accurate, but the point is, there are many, many, many possible narratives right now of how things went down based on what we know. Some will reflect better on him, some worse. Wait until you know more about what it was before laying all the judgment on him.
No one else mattered enough to even tell "Hey guys, I might be gone next week."
Do you know that this didn’t happen? Do you know if he plans on talking to anyone else about it? Again, wait and find out how things went down before making up your mind.

Non-compete contracts are tricky legally (as per wiki). I’m not sure if they’re valid in California at all.

Non-compete clauses are, in most instances, unlawful and unenforceable under California law. You can have an agreement preventing former employees from using information they learned while in you employ for the benefit of a subsequent employer, because that information is the property of the employer. But, except in very rare circumstances, you cannot prevent them from working for a competitor.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
I’m under one in CA. I’m not allowed to move into a competing company for 2 years after my current employment ends.
I’d strongly encourage you to challenge that if/when you leave your job. Just because you signed it doesn’t mean it’s enforceable (hint: in CA, it’s not).

Well, maybe he doesn’t want to live in bumfuck Oklahoma? Maybe he wants to work for Wilcox (who someone else said was his mentor?). As of now, we also don’t know of any recruits that have left Cal for Washington. What I’m telling you to do is to chill on the personal attacks in real time. I’m just going to be frank about this now – it’s because it reflects really poorly on you, and the fanbase, to start attacking someone like that who has done a whole lot of positive things for the school, who’s an alumni of the school, without knowing how things went down. It’s classless. You want to hold Tosh to a higher standard? Start with yourself.

D-line will not be an issue unless we hire a poor coach. But generally the D-line has been one of the top performing units in the country.
by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 16, 2012 1:55 PM PST up reply actions
My take on the recruits
I have three classes:
(1) Kids who are true Bears. Guys like Treggs and Kline who truly bleed Blue and Gold and are sticking with us because they love Cal and love what Tosh was selling, even if the salesman is gone.
(2) D-line guys who leave Cal. It makes perfect sense for them to leave because they probably wanted to be coached by Tosh thanks to his history of putting guys in the league.
(3) Other players who are considering leaving. To me, this makes no sense. They weren’t going to be coached by Tosh anyway and his departure doesn’t make any of the pros about Cal any less true. That being said, if they go to the SEC or UW, I don’t care—I wish them all the best (how funny, it was at the UW game when I heard some fan screaming for Bigelow to be “broken” for “betraying” them).

How much was Tosh really worth to Cal football?
All we have to do is wait and see what effect this has on the recruiting class and how many end up signing or walking. Of those that walk, if any decide to do so, how many will give the reason for leaving as, specifically because Tosh left? Will any of them say having Tosh would have been great, I still wish he would stay, but I chose Cal for more then Tosh? It would be harder to tell if any of the ones that walk away do so not so much because of what Tosh said to them but becaue of that fact that he was the one in charge of their recruitment and now they have to bond with their projected coach. If the class comes crashing down, we will know Tosh was the real deal. If most of the class stays in tact, we can’t say Tosh was overrated but atleast we will know that it he was not a make it or break it element for Cal football’s success goign foward.
Ursus arctos californicus – California golden bear
The reason why we’re all scared is that the only reason these 5 star recruits even CONSIDERED Cal was because:
1. They’ve heard great things about Tosh.
2. He coaches up the defensive line very well, looking at the kids he sent to the NFL.
3. He preaches about family and loyalty, which strikes home.
Now he’s gone in the blink of an eye, without even telling his kids (the players he brought into the program) that he’d be gone. Family? Loyalty? What do those have to do with anything? I’m not even pissed that he’s leaving so much (more money is always good for your profession) but that he left in such a way that future recruits may not have that same vision of loyalty and family at Cal — our main/best recruiter having thrown so many kids and the school he owed everything to under the rug.
How will this affect the quality of the team?
I didn’t even know until I read Wilner’s article on it, that we had the best defense in the Pac-12. How much of that is Tosh? Can we get a decent replacement?

Losing Tosh really hurts for a lot of reasons, sure he was a great recruiter
but let’s not overlook how great of a coach he has been for the DL. He has helped coach and produce back-to-back first round picks and has done a great job with our DL. I think that is going to hurt far more than his recruiting.
Perhaps Tedford should have done more to try to keep Tosh, besides just money he should have given him more responsibility.
I really hate Sark and UW.
just curious
if we had to chose Tedford or Tosh, who would you choose?
I think i will take Tedford, but I really wish to have both
TBH honest, at this point in their careers I would take Tosh
That is because I think Tedford has hit his ceiling at Cal.
Plus, it would be nice to have a young defensive minded coach who can bring in and proven to coach up defensive recruits.

by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 2:43 PM PST up reply actions
I have two facts right now:
1. Tosh is a douche.
2. Fuck everything.
But on a more serious note, of course don’t. And we never will. What we do know is that Tedford most likely pushed for a pay raise to keep one of his best young coaches/recruiters and was denied. This coach then, without telling any of the kids he’d brought in the previous years, blindsided everyone else by ditching a program and trying to poach their top recruit before closing the doors behind him.
I’m not necessarily convinced all of that is true right now.

I trust Gabe King when he says he had no idea Tosh left. Regardless of any other circumstance (how much more money he’ll make, if he hated Tedford, if this gets him a guaranteed line in the succession to be DC), that alone makes this a despicable move to me.

I blame this all on Baylor
They have always wanted revenge against Cal and Tedford for destroying them back in 2002. If Baylor doesn’t hang so many points on UW, Nick Holt and his staff aren’t fired and Tosh is still at Cal.

Of course the only reason UW played Baylor is because USC cheated and was sanctioned
ITS USC’s FAULT!!!!!!!!
Oh sure, it was only a matter of time.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Will Tosh be as successful at UW?
From all accounts, what made him such a great recruiter is the way he believed in Cal, and could talk about the Cal family—the fact he was a player then a coach, etc.
I’m guessing it will take some time before he can make the same claim believably about Washington.
Also, he no longer has the #1 public school in the country pitch.
I think Tosh was a great recruiter for Cal, but Cal itself had a lot to do with it. I don’t think Tosh was successful because he hid Cal’s problems, but rather that he could articulate what is great about the University of California—and that, for the most part, is still the same. We just need the next great recruiter to step up!
I think you’re overestimating how much any single factor played into Tosh’s success as a recruiter. Being good at sales is first and foremost a personality thing. There’s no single aspect of the personality that makes or breaks a salesman, it’s a holistic thing. Having a great product to sell that you believe in obviously helps, but it’s not like Tosh is all of a sudden going to forget how to connect with recruits. He will still be a very good recruiter.
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 2:45 PM PST up reply actions
I think the point is more that with his recent change in environment and lack of really any history with UW, he has no sales pitch in terms of the university itself. From this point on, he can only really pitch himself and the resume of their more well-known coaches — which aren’t bad, by the way. It’s just he loses a huge facet to his game, and we have to see how well he adapts to that.
Completely agree. This isn’t an exact formula, but from the outside it looked like what was winning recruits over was 95% personal charisma, 5% sincere love of Cal. If it were as easy as selling the school, any passionate alum could do it. It’s obviously not that easy.
People are drawn to certain people, and Tosh is clearly one of them. Kids want to be around him. They want to play for him. I expect that will translate wherever.

Shaq always had interest in UW since one of his friends (James Sample?) went there…
TROLL ON YOU BEARS. - atoms
what i don't get
is how a recruiter can just switch sides mid-stream and still maintain credibility. For months he’s been saying Cal is a better place to play than UW, now he turns around and says, actually UW is better? How can you trust that?
That is the downside to the way we recruit. We always sell on the positives of Cal, not the negatives of other schools. So when he turns around and tries to sell the positives of other schools, it isn’t exactly like he’s flip flopping from negative to positive.
Still doesn’t have the family-loyalty cache that helped him so much though.
TROLL ON YOU BEARS. - atoms
I read it somewhere but the trick is not never mention a word about rival schools. He just says everything that is good about Cal. This way he is technically ever putting down other programs just saying what is great about Cal. Recruits don’t have any memory of him saying Wash sucks and it rains five times a week. He will do the same when he gets to Seattle but now it’s time for recruits to compare what he said to them when he was here about Cal and what he is saying now to them about Wash.
Tosh: Wash offers a world class education
Recruit: how does it compare to Cal?

You’ve never had a boss you’d consider switching jobs for? I have.
I’m not saying it should necessarily be anyone’s sole reason for choosing a college, a place of employment, whatever, but I can’t blame someone if it’s a big factor. People can be important to other people. That’s not crazy.
What some people are failing to see is that this is not just about someone leaving a job to get a better job. This is someone leaving a place that you bleed for and he lead you to believe that he also bleed for it. That there was no place place better or could take its place. Not only does he leave without saying a word, but he goes to work for a rival, the people you are supposed to hate. The people you want least to succeed (not accounting for natural rival, Stanfurd). I know that everyone in here would feel slightly better if he had bolted to some other conference. It would have still sucked none the less. I think we understand that this is part of the business but its also not just one guy leaving one job to find a better one. I think its rational for people to dislike someone who is as of right now actively working to dismantle our elite recruiting class that he was supposed to bring in for us when he was working for us. All in the name of integrity and unity/family. All those things we all believe are real and that we value more then anything anyone could ever offer to us. A person who in this very moment is tirelessly working to recruit to Washington the class that many of us thought would help us finally make a leap to the Rose bowl. This is coming a day removed from him tweeting and preaching the Cal gospel! That being said, He is not the only one to point a finger to. Loyalty is at an all time low and corruption and greed is an all time high. Some of us can also look at our lives we would not be the exception. But I can see how people are sad, mad, angry…how could they not be? maybe we need to start seeing this thing for what it is and not what we wished it could be. We need a more sophisticate way of thinking about this whole thing or we are in for a long road of disappointment. True loyalty and integrity maybe only what we strive for. We may even achieve it sometimes but you can never bottle it. I wouldn’t be shocked to see if Chris Peterson bolted to the University of California if they made him an offer. I would be sad, mad and angry if he did it without saying a word. Leaving everyone at Boise in the cold. I would say to myself, everyone has a price. Or would I? Or would I just be supper ecstatic and happy to see him in a place where he could lead us to glory? I think my head is going to explode now.

From the article it looks like a combo of Tosh, Wilcox, and the fact UW was already his 2nd choice.
This is completely expected, and if people are shocked and offended by this then they really need to be completely shocked and offended by bigtime college recruiting in general. This is tame compared to the really slimy stuff.
With the fact that UW was in the mix with Shaq, I don’t see how Tosh has any choice but to go after him. I’m not saying I like it. I’m saying that’s college football.

Wilcox recruited Syd and is still close to their family. UW was second choice and he “like[s] them a lot right now.” He’s confused and does’t know what he’s going to do.
Then some fluff on UCLA, but they don’t appear to really be in the mix.
I can't copy+paste because it's a $$$ article, but I'll paraphrase
Shaq: It’s a painful loss because Tosh is the reason Shaq was interested in Cal. Even though he’s not his position coach, it would still be a big loss.
[quote that was posted about about Tosh’s recent visit and telling him about UW]
Shaq says he has a good relationship with Wilcox because Wilcox recruited Syd to play at Cal. Shaq says it’s a tough choice because UW has a lot going for them now. He says he’s confused and isn’t sure what is going to happen now.
Shaq mentions a possible visit to UCLA because he’s not ruling anyone out, but he’s focused on Cal and UW now.

Jim Mora poached UW's DB coach shortly after he was hired.
And shortly after, UW lost a DB commit to UCLA. I believe that was the first of two. This kind of stuff happens all the time.

Or this one?
Leaving after the season means you’re leaving in the few weeks before LOI day. There’s no way around it.

no, how about these...
Really? It’s the classy thing to do. How do you not get that?
Classy….
Let’s see, poaching your current employer’s recruits, while you’re on a paid trip by the employer? huh…
I doubt it’s as much about snagging this years recruits as it is about having an ace recruiter for future seasons…
Yeah, that doesn’t quite look so right now either…
I see what you’re trying to do there, that is why I said “entirety” of his posts…
The “classy thing to do” quote is regarding Mike Silver wishing Tosh well. Mike Silver is the one doing the classy thing in that post. Is it no longer classy to generically wish people well in their future endeavors?
The “fundamental problem” quote was a good 45 minutes before the Shaq info was posted. Missing Barry was speaking there towards those who speculate motive regardless of the absence of supporting facts and he was right on point. Facts subsequently coming in that substantiate the raw speculation being discussed are irrelevant to the original point.
And you are as free to invent narratives as to the timing as the next guy. Seeing an opportunity, jumping on it, and trying to do the best for your new employer that you can remains plausible.
We don’t think he did this the right way and it’s not the way we’d do it ourselves. But it’s his fucking career he’s boosting or ruining and thus we generically wish him luck in his future endeavors.
WE ARE THE 0%
This one got a lot of recs:
What I’m telling you to do is to chill on the personal attacks in real time. I’m just going to be frank about this now – it’s because it reflects really poorly on you, and the fanbase, to start attacking someone like that who has done a whole lot of positive things for the school, who’s an alumni of the school, without knowing how things went down. It’s classless. You want to hold Tosh to a higher standard? Start with yourself.

College football is basically a sleazy sport (and a business). However, at least in most businesses, employees sign non-disclosure/non-compete contracts and so cannot cause direct harm to their former-employer, at least not for a year or two. Too bad the same standards don’t apply in the world of BCS football.
Pretty shameful IMHO.

We don't need no meow; we don't need no cats!
i was not a fan of college football before when I went to Cal
i became a fan my junior year, and became a huge fan after graduating.
That said, what I am saying is, we really really care about Cal football. Especially the people here who’s spending their valuable time at CGB.
Honestly… Cal having a football team was part of the reason why I went to Cal. We all applied to and got into more than one school with strong academics. Some of us picked Cal over those partially because of football.

i wanted to go to a pac10 school coming out of high school. i applied to cal, furd, usc, uclol, and a couple ivies that mom wanted me to. after visiting palo alto, despite many family members being furdies, did not like. it was like, i drove 400miles to be in the same place. and well…usc and uclol…are well…usc and uclol.
my main problem with tosh leaving is that, with these monster recruiting classes, it really felt that we were closing the talent gap between our boys are likes of usc. like “roses before we die, no seriously, there’s a good chance. like really really it’s no joke” close. now…we’re kinda back to a position of recruiting uncertainity. who knows whether future classes will be as talented…getting multiple pick ups at aa army game on national tv…?
well…what’s done is done. go bears. the bears will never quit. will never. go bears.
Yeah, but no one knows who is leaving for sure yet. I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised with the guys that have come out and said they’re solid. Both Treggs and Barton are great recruits and they both said they’re solid.

I think Wilcox will be gone from UW as soon as he gets a HC offer
and he probably brings Tosh with him as his DC.
Hopefully Wilcox will get a HC job here pretty soon and take Tosh with him out of the Pac12.
Or….Wilcox to Cal in 2013/2014, with Tosh as d-coordinator?
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 3:28 PM PST up reply actions
LOL, maybe?
I was a lot higher on Wilcox before his stint at Tennessee, how much of his struggles at Tennessee were a result of Wilcox or the mess that he walked into after Kiffin left I don’t know. He also wasn’t at Tennessee very long.
I suppose if Wilcox came back to Cal as the HC Tosh might follow him back here.
Be careful. It goes both ways.
It isn’t out of the question that someday Lupoi may want to be a defensive coordinator (or head coach.) And it isn’t out of the question that he could want to return to berkeley to do that. The reports of the way he did this (not telling his players and trying to “steel” recruits) is disappointing, but no reason to burn bridges on our end.
Exactly how I feel, I think the most disappointing thing about all this is the way Tosh left
I think the way he left means he probably is never coming back to Cal, at least not while Tedford is associated with Cal.
Money
It’s all about the money in the end. Don’t think paying him HALF a million bucks is truly worth it given the state of UC finances. Doesn’t look good with the various other factors at play. Of course, Tedford could have offered to give himself a pay cut.

Dawg insight
As a Dawg from a family of Bears, this is bittersweet. One of the most garbage defenses gets the best recruiter in the West/possibly the country. But I really dislike how much money he is getting (that’s where my tuition goes) and I find it in really poor taste for him to leave Cal. He seemed like a Bear to the bone, but now it’s pretty clear that he is full of crap.
I have no idea about specifics of the UW athletics department, but in general football salaries aren’t paid with anyone’s tuition.
God dammit!! Tedford totally scammed me out of 8k in 2009 then!!!

This.
To my understanding, the school takes all the money they have and allocate a certain amount any given year to each department. Donors can say “I’m giving you 10 million dollars for Cal Football,” and it will have to go to our football department. Your tuition does not go directly to their pay roll.
Well, that is true when you follow how things are accounted for, but in the end…it’s all just one big pot. Money that goes to football is money that isn’t going to say, building maintenance or operation costs.

Yeah, keep a close eye on Tosh… it seems deep pockets can woo him, but your tuition doesn’t pay him (unless they’re doing weird stuff up there)
i think this will bite Sark in the ass.
500k for an assistant coach is massive in the Pac-10. He will have to get immediate results in the defense, and immediate big recruits (wasn’t Cochran a Seattle recruit? If they don’t get him now, it will seem like a bad gamble). Otherwise this payscale is not supportable for his department (and will lead to bad blood between the much-less remunerative positions held by the other assistant coaches).
What hasn’t been talked about here is the obvious story that by PAYING for Tosh, Sark is basically gambling that he can BUY Shaq and Cochran (or was it Ellis?) and the other big-time commits that were wavering between Cal and UW. THAT is why it happened now (before LOI). I think this is totally shady and kind of worse than Willie Lyles. How about if we waited until Alabama’s west-coast recruiter was about to land another stellar class, then gave him a giant raise for one year to try to snag his recruits?
I doubt it’s as much about snagging this years recruits as it is about having an ace recruiter for future seasons…

Wilcox left Tennessee before they had a good defense
if he gets UW a “decent” defense and a school comes afer him he will leave.
They were top 30 by most measures last year.
With a top 30 defense we would have won 10 games last year.
Does that include the cream puffs that Tennessee got fat off of?
Plus the SEC East offenses were terrible this season.
We will see how well he does at UW. If he does do well I think he could be gone within the next 2-4 years.
Although if he does leave maybe Tosh stays as your DC now.
I agree that he'll likely be gone in a few years if he does well.
He did a pretty good job at UT, apparently his defense was full of inexperiences players, just like it will be at UW.
We don’t really know that, though, unless you’re close with Tosh? We’ve had Tosh leaving rumors before, which suggests he has turned down offers in the past. Apparently this one was good enough he couldn’t turn it down. What about this offer was so good? Obviously the money was good. Very unlikely that’s the only factor, though.

If that were true...
….he’d leave after signing day.
If I was a recruit that was counting on playing for Tosh and he left right after I signed a binding agreement, I’d be pretty pissed. I’m also not seeing your argument why hiring him now means it MUST be about this years recruiting class – if UW found a coach they wanted, why wouldn’t they want to get him signed as soon as possible, even if they really want him for future seasons?
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 3:54 PM PST up reply actions
Sure but why Lupoi? and why now? There are plenty of other ace recruiters. And there are other times of the year to make a change that don’t completely screw over your conference partner.
Well, he has a strong relationship with their new d-coordinator for one. In addition to being an ace recruiter, he fits an open position they have. What other time of year is there to make the coaching change? Seriously, this is when coaching changes are most common – right after the season.

Or maybe Sandy, who doesn’t realize that if we want to play with the big boys, we need to pay like them. You can’t have a roster of coaches being paid like they’re in the MWC and expect to compete at a BCS level. I find it ridiculous that that’s what we’re asking out of Tedford. “We heard you can shit out gold, so please do it or you’re fired.” Sandy does understand this to a degree, which is why she’s so committed with Tedford. He’s a coach that we can afford where we won’t fall completely out of relevancy.
Tedford could have gone somewhere else for a lot more…Sandy was not cheap when it came to keeping him.

Yes, his contract was very favorable to him, but more in job security than pure cash. A lot of it is contingent on bonuses from him winning a lot of games and never leaving.
Look at the facility they built!!!
The big boys- is that who we’re trying to be? USC, Penn State, Ohio State?
It seems that’s why a lot of people are unhappy with Tedford. I’m saying if we want to take it to that next level and consistently beat the USC’s of the world, then we have to pay our coaches. I’m glad the SAPC went through, it’s a great first step. But it doesn’t help if we don’t pay our coaches and they all leave for higher paying jobs.
How in the world do you put that on Tedford?

or, do you mean the other sports at Cal?
I think keeping our asst. coach salaries in line with the rest of the Pac-12 is okay, and probably the most responsible thing to do in the current climate.
I’d rather have a lot of quality programs in our athletics department than one giant money-sucker. Even if I happen to enjoy the money-sucker the most.
I agree with this but football is not a money sucker.
The Golden Bear is ever watching
2011 Giants Adoptee: Orlando Cabrera (because everyone needs to be loved)

This.
The money suckers are actually all those other sports we have that run at a net loss every year that football has to support.
what I’m saying is that if you gave all our asst. coaches 500k salaries, there wouldn’t be anything left for the other sports. Football subsidizes the less-popular sports, and their frequently stellar student athletes. I don’t want to see that change.
But you don’t need 500k salaries, that was overkill. If we weren’t paying him jack sh*t in comparison to others, the difference in salaries wouldn’t have been so overwhelming. This is all under the assumption that money was the largest factor in his move.
Do remember he’s turned down multiple offers, many of them most likely much more realistic. What UW is paying him is obviously too much, but it shows how much they value a good defensive line and not losing all their Washington recruits to Cali schools. Honestly, if UW had better defensive line play, it would have made all the difference in the world with their offense this year. They know it.
football generates the most money
and helps to run all the other athletic programs.
It’s worth investing in it.
One thing I’ve always wondered about – I wonder how much negotiating Tedford has done for assistant pay. A head coach should know he needs good assistants, and I’ve definitely heard of some coaches making their assistant pay a big time negotiating point…wonder how much Tedford did along those lines, if any. I have no idea.

Should have made him DC or some kind of under-the-table “we’ll hire you as head coach when we let Jeff go.” For those that think he was too young to be such a coach, fine I spot you that. But he was certainly talented in the most important thing in CFB: recruiting. He’s a young Phill Fullmer. OC’s and DC’s can be hired, but to have that charismatic leader who excels at recruiting is what Cal really needed.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I gave that a little thought, and one thing I had that I think is a legit reason Tosh needs more experience before being a head coach – at this point, he just isn’t well connected with other coaches. He’s a great recruiter, so I have no doubt that would help him get coaches he wanted to hire to come, but he just really doesn’t know that many coaches since he’s been at Cal under the same coach his whole career. Moving around a bit and networking expands the pool of guys you can consider for jobs when you’re looking to fill them. Just look at Tedford and how many coaches he knows personally from his career. Tosh doesn’t have that yet.
by Missing Barry on Jan 16, 2012 3:58 PM PST up reply actions
but as we see $ buys you talented coaches and Cal could win with a legit OC and DC teamed with an ace recruiter. Great recruiters are so rare. If there’s one thing to pay top dollar for it’s a recruiter like tosh.

Don’t know about this claim that he didn’t let anyone know, since he did apparently told Shaq Thompson (okay, so it might be a part of trying to get Shaq to also go to U-Dub).
Even if he was entertaining other options (but it does appear that U-Dub quickly moved in on him once they found the money), Tosh probably got more kids to commit by not giving them doubts about not going to Berkeley. Now that most of these kids had committed and be branded as a future part of the Cal team, they will get scrutinized by their peers if they do decide to bolt because of Tosh.

In my opinion, depends on the context. What we know now with Shaq certainly doesn’t look good, and if he was telling a recruit like Shaq that but at the same time, not telling players/coaches/admin at Cal, definitely not good. I can see a plausible scenario where he doesn’t want to lie to recruits and is just open and honest with them about his own intentions – but if he was really being open/honest, I’d also expect him to tell Cal people that. I’m not saying I think this scenario is what happened, just that it’s something I wouldn’t find objectionable.

Leaving after this season makes little sense to me unless Pendergast got a DC job in the NFL.
Not sure, it could be interpreted either way.
If it’s after the 2011 season “that didn’t happen” could mean Pendergast didn’t get any NFL offers that he wanted.
If it’s after the 2012 season “that didn’t happen” means it won’t happen because Lupoi is gone.

I’m wondering if Tedford was getting a little antsy about the success of Tosh compared to what Tedford was doing.
Clearly there’s a equilibrium where assistants help the HC’s career by helping him win games but they can also hurt the HC’s career by becoming more valuable than the HC. At and beyond this point, it’s a conflict of interest for Tedford to promote his promote his eventual replacement.

Who saw ZackFollett's tweets about going back to Cal
I dont know how to do fancy block quotes on this thing
ZakarianFollett Zack Follett
"@freshfunk5: @ZakarianFollett Pain train, you coming back to Cal? :) #gobears #calgang" – would love to! I could get recruits!

Donovan Edwards on twitter confirming Tepper’s tweet that Oregon blame game was big factor for Tosh. Can’t quote because it’s not all in context, look at convo between @RGBearTerritory, @MikeTepper79 and @DonovanEdwards
oh cool, more ammo for other schools to use against us in recruiting! it’s fine when doofuses like us speculate on the interwebs, but I’d like to see some restraint from former players airing our dirty laundry
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Pretty much this.

your operating under the premise that everyone loves Tedford.

First of all, sometimes personal loyalties are going to run deeper than school loyalties. How that affects their credibility, and whether you think less of them because they’re taking Tosh’s side, that’s up to you. But it’s not entirely surprising.
Second, in the world of social media, people say things without thinking.
Exactly, so they would have a decent idea of what was going on
during that time.
Well Edwards was still with the team when this happened right? Tepper probably still had a lot of friends still on the team when this happened.
I am sure players had a good idea what was going on, maybe Tosh even confided in some?
Who knows how true but I am willing to give player/recent ex-players a bit more BOD when it comes to this.
I have a hard time believing that JT might have actually instructed his defensive players to fake injuries or told his defensive coaches to have their players fake injuries. It’s worth noting that of Cal’s players that seemed to have recurring injury problems that game, I think they were mostly (and maybe only) Cal’s defensive linemen. To me, I think it’s much more plausible to believe that Lupoi acted alone and without Tedford’s knowledge than under Tedford’s direction.
I think a lot of people also say that Lupoi had to be acting under JT’s orders too because it’s impossible for something like that to happen without JT’s knowledge. Well, as someone who has worked for the team, based on my experiences and what I saw I think it is very possible for a lot of stuff to go on that the head coach does not know about.
Count me as one of those that believes that Tedford didn’t throw Lupoi under the bus.
Tedford hasn’t shown any penchant for cheating, so it seems strange to me that all of a sudden he would resort to cheating.

It’s a data point. When someone makes a move like this it’s rarely for just one reason. I’m inclined to believe he wasn’t happy with the incident or how the repercussions were handled, regardless of whose fault it really was or wasn’t.
How much that mattered to today’s decision…who knows? We’d have to consider a lot more data points to get the whole story…and the reality is most of us in the alum/fan public will never really know everything about what happened.
If he was really that upset about the incident and wanted to get away from Cal, why didn’t he accept Texas’ offer last offseason?

It looks like Lawyer Milloy is trying to help Tosh out and is recruiting Shaq for UW. Is that allowed?
Perhaps a bit ironically, Shaq still has “A CAL BEAR for life” as his sig on twitter

Managers are judged...
on how they retain their critical staff. Tedford lost the a key employee he had to keep, perhaps the ONLY one. It’s fair to say that I’ve lost what little confidence I had left in the man, and in the program under his direction.
Not sure if I renew at this point, guess I should wait to see how it shakes out. Fucking unbelievable.

But after Nick Holt, anyone will be welcome.
"Fuck this shit. Is this fucking season over yet? It is? Jesus H. motherfucking Christ on a stick! Get Nick Holt on the phone NOW! Stupid motherfucker forces us to score touchdowns on every possession, and we still can't win the Alamo Bowl? Hey, asshole! It's Steve Sarkisian. You're fucking FIRED, you FUCK!"
Cal Bears are screwed
Damn, how many 5-star recruits are we going to lose in 2 weeks?
(I mean from recruits’ perspective—doesn’t anything else matter?) Also, primo lame-o of Tosh to go prior to LOI day.

Deja Vu
I was a little surprised when I first heard this. UW poached Oregon State’s strong recruiting, secondary coach just last week. Sarkisian obviously isn’t afraid to ruffle feathers in the Pac-12 north.
It can’t be. No fan base can take this much coach-related (non-scandalous) bad news in one day.

No they won't.
They’ll just seem like a team on the rise, working to get the best coaches around. No one see as sleazy but us.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
I think you’re wrong. First of all, they’re not on the rise at all… back to back 7-6 seasons would show that AND they’re recruiting has been awful. They would come off as totally desperate and sleezy.
Well, I personally don’t think they’re on the rise. I’m just saying that the general public will simply look at this as a team’s attempts to get better.
Seriously, I don’t see any talking heads or reporters calling these moves “sleazy.” They’ll just see them as shrewd business moves.
