Cal Men's Basketball vs. the Utah Utes Live Gamethread
Utah Utes at California Golden Bears, Jan 14, 2012 7:30 PM PST
Who cares about the NFL Playoffs? (Playoffs!?!) Our sturdy Golden Bears are back at the Haas hosting the once-proud Utah Utes. Come watch Jorge Gutierrez shut down the Pac-12's 4th leading scorer, Josh Watkins.
Is this the game where we get to see Alex Rossi? How about Christian Behrens? And most importantly, will we get FREE WAFFLES?!?!

Wow. The Patriots are laying it on the Broncos.
Let’s just hope if this game at Haas tonight turns out like that, Tedford will decide to finally put Bridgford in!
for the record, that’s not a knock on Maynard, but just a word to say I would have liked to see Bridgford in the USC and Utah blowouts.

New look Jorge this year.
He used to get technicals for pushing and stuff. I haven’t seen ONE “T” this year.
Earlier in this game, he grabbed on the ground for a loose ball. After the whistle, instead of smooshing his elbow into someone’s face while getting up, he raised his arms up and looked at the ref like, I’m cool. I’ve seen that many times, actually. New Jorge in that sense. Coach wants him to not foul out, wants his O and overall leadership. Stay cool and stay in the court and in the game. It’s a new look. Respectable. D is not as good, though. Trade offs…
And I repeat...
… Jorge is my PAC10 POY.
(Just pick up the scoring a bit to justify the selection is all I ask. Last game didn’t help that.)
I gotta believe Monty impressed upon him the need to keep cool and stay in games

He was actually well below league average even when they were winning, they were just hitting the good end of variance. Even last week, he made 3-4 throws to Thomas that he’s normally maybe 50-60% to hit…and if he misses any of them they probably lose, against a team that was playing half their second string.

by LEastCoastBears on Jan 14, 2012 8:59 PM PST up reply actions
To be clear, I was making fun of Dan and I don’t think this team tells us anything about him improving or not. I doubt the guard rotation in competitive games changes much after Brandon gets healthy. (I’m talking about the level we were at when Justin got most of the PG minutes, and Brandon gave a blow to Justin, Jorge, and occasionally Allen.
that’s right.
Cobbs probably should have had it sooner. But, I will say this, Jimes Boy,
I do miss having Brandon available.
CT, So Do I
However, we need the Brandon of late last year, or even an improvement on that, given he is older, more experienced now. I hope he can figure out how to contribute better than he has up to this point in the season, whatever the reasons for it are.
Good that Murrray appears to be turning the corner to being a real help to the team (or am I wishfully thinking?).

As a former bench player
I hated hated hated it when starters took shots during garbage time. (Cobbs)
I thought the same time - that Cobbs had Rossi open and that was forced.
Hell, pad Gut’s stats if you want to do that. He’s going for POY.
Wasn’t even a good shot.
My main issue with Justin is when he pulls up before the offense has any chance to run. He’s good at it, but there’s plenty of room for that late in the shot clock if the O breaks down.
Good point.
Tough line between being assertive and taking ill-advised early shots. I get the sense that he’d be shooting a lot more if not for Monty’s influence. Getting better, though.

Barry thinks Rossi could be a contributor. Based on 1 college minute and 0 shots prior to his statement.
Based on his recruitment rating and reporting based on practice and talking to the coaches, more likely.

I mean, I think there’s a reasonable chance he could contribute down the line, also, but I guarantee you Barry doesn’t know a damn thing about his high school career and recruitment. Nor has he had more than a passing discussion about how he’s practicing.
I should probably just not do this anymore…Dan and Barry are going to do what they do. They have for 30 years. My bad, just bored.
You really don’t think they do ANY research or even read a basic scouting report or “state of the team” report, or talk to any coaches before the game and just go into it completely cold? I’m sure they’re not as well-prepared as they should be, but that seems really unprofessional.

I went to the open gym practice last year when Rossi was a true Frosh. Only time he’s played on the floor in front of a crowd, other than tonight. He shot the ball REALLY well. Smooth. Afterwards, I commented on this board that, hey, wasn’t Crabbe supposed to be the hot shot recruit on this team?
In other words, if you think Crabbe’s jumper is smooth, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
I’m REALLY looking forward to getting Rossi at full strength next season. At last.
Kreklow can also shoot. (I realize he shot poorly last year, but there’s evidence that will improve). And Cobbs is better than advertised. Crabbe, Cobbs, Kreklow, and hopefully a healthy Rossi. Shooting will not be a problem.
Getting to the hole and depth inside, with Jorge and Kamp leaving. But that’s getting way ahead of beating UW this week.
Am I Dreaming?
I thought that Rossi played a bit in the first exhibition game in 2010 and buried a 3, which I sort of remember was his only shot.
I am betting he will be a really important part of our team going forward this season and the following 3, if his health clears up.
Dude… Rossi’s shot is AWESOME. A la Crabbe last year. He needs to get his conditioning… Conditioned.

Better, Quicker Release
I think that Rossi not only has a really sweet outside shot, his release is quicker than Allen’s.
The game was such a blowout joke
that PRD left it on.
Usually he shuts it down as soon as the game is over. He must have moved on to something else at halftime.
