Aaron Rodgers, Desmond Bishop & Cameron Jordan Open Thread (Plus Arizona-Oklahoma State)

(via slatetundra07)

In case you've forgotten, Aaron Rodgers and Desmond Bishop are finally going to get their rings. The NFL season kicks off tonight, and two of the greatest California Golden Bears ever are two of the newest members of Titletown. Rodgers and Bishop will now look to begin their quest to repeat, and Rodgers is already set to run an evolved Mike McCarthy offense that will take advantage of his scrambling ability.

This night belongs to Rodgers and Bishop, but Cameron Jordan also gets his first chance to shine as a member of the New Orleans Saints. Jordan is expected to play and start in his first regular season game as a Saint, and will look to make a big impact on opening week.

(You can also watch Mike Stoops and his Arizona Wildcats stumble all over themselves in Stillwater against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Take your pick on one of many glorious nights of football ahead.)

I like the Saints (+5) and Oklahoma State (-14) tonight.

I think the Packers win, though, 31-27.

Would’ve been at home, too. On the other hand: I think every Pac-12 South team is horrible this year so it’s kind of six of one half a dozen of the other.

I think

USC could be looking at a nasty future. There is not a single other team besides Utah that can consistently win, and Utah gets a N/A in that category so far.

Well shit we can argue hypotheticals all day but the numbers were on their side and “kick and wait for the breaks” doesn’t work when there’s the evident GIGANTIC chasm of talent between the two teams. Zona is a huge underdog and needs to play as such.

You have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation with Foles. He’s shown us on a couple drives now that they can move the ball. With some points on the board, it takes one or two stops and a couple TDs/FGs to make it a game. I think it’s the exact opposite. They’re a huge underdog and need to take ANY guaranteed points they can get.

by mrjpark on Sep 8, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

You have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation with Foles.

Oh please. He puts up pretty good numbers in an offensive system designed for the quarterback to put up video game numbers. He doesn’t stretch the field, he moves like a lineman, and he throws too many INTs. Completion percentage is rapidly becoming one of the most overrated statistics in sports.

Someone with a way higher percentage of long and intermediate passes to checkdowns than Foles. Also throws less interceptions, more touchdowns, and you know plays in the NFL.

Most of New Englands passing yards are YAC. A lot of Brady critics pointed out his lacking of a real deep game. He only really started throwing bombs once he got Randy Moss.

A college quarterback doesn’t need to be perfect to be one of the best college QB’s in the nation. Foles has everything he needs to move on to the next level.

As for intermediate passes, he has the arm and accuracy to do it, as he’s shown us. Consistency comes with experience. He’s no Sam Bradford, by any means. But once again, you don’t get those every year. There aren’t many pure passers out there that are better than him. You have to remember he does this all without a running game.

by mrjpark on Sep 8, 2011 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there’s a middle ground between you and AERose. Foles fits his system well, but I’d take at least four Pac-12 quarterbacks ahead of him, if not more.

And they’re all top QB’s. There’s obviously Luck, who has everything. Tuel is a great QB in a poor program. QB’s like Maynard and Thomas pale in comparison. UCLA still doesn’t have a QB. I’d say Fole’s better than anyone in ASU. And then there’s Barkley.

I just don’t see why AERose seems so offended by the fact that he’s considered one of the top QB’s. I was more surprised Locker was considered one of the top QB’s. At least Foles has the passing part in place and has real upside as a QB.

by mrjpark on Sep 8, 2011 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, for what it’s worth I don’t consider him a top QB. I’m not going to speculate on what the general football community thinks, but I know he doesn’t have any strong draft prospects. I think he’s your typically decent college QB. You’ll get some bowls out of him but he won’t be appearing on All-conference teams any time soon, even in a conference with weak QBs.

And I think Maynard can be better than him, though that’s clearly still to be seen.

Arizona finally has some good field position and fumbles it away

Mike Stoops didn’t want the Pac-16 to form because he didn’t want to have to play his brother every year. With the way Arizona is playing, Mike won’t even be around when the Pac-16 kicks off.

I want to be fair to Arizona and say that OSU is a beastly offensive outfit, but if Zona continues to play like this all year they’re going to have a losing record at best.

They faceplanted down the stretch over the past two years, including five losses in a row to round out last season. I’m betting that a losing season will make fans pretty antsy.

It is however Stoops’ fault that a team with five senior offensive linemen and 3 senior defensive linemen accomplished approximately fuck all last year.

We’ve gone through the same things. When you’re not a power house, you can’t just reload all the time. Unfortunately, they’re now a team with a great QB/receiver, but no depth in the trenches. Their season rides on whether or not their lines mature.
