DBD 9.30.11 That Awkward Moment When...
In the vein of websites like FML and TFLN comes "That Awkward Moment When..." that's gaining popularity.
It's a pretty simple game. Describe an awkward moment that you think others can relate to:
Here are a couple examples to get you started: (http://stricktlydating.hubpages.com/hub/The-Best-That-awkward-moment-when-Quotes)
- That awkward moment when you're left alone with your friends' parents
- That awkward moment when someone you hate says something funny and you try not to laugh
- That awkward moment when someone says hello and you say "Good thanks!"
- That awkward moment when you say "Goodbye!" to someone but you both walk off in the same direction.
- That awkward moment when you type your ex's name into your Facebook status instead of the 'Search' bar.
- That awkward moment when you try to exit through a closed glass door.
Also, let's just make some CGB-related ones because life here is so much cooler than it is for these socially-awkward penguins who post these things:
- That awkward moment when you've post a new DBD, only to discover you've been beaten by a couple minutes
- That awkward moment when you brag about posting the joke first, but on everyone else's screen, you came second
- That awkward moment when you close the DBD without z'ing through all comments first.
- That awkward moment when you quote part of an article, but all that shows up is "I <3 cock"
Happy Friday, all!

"Occupy Wall Street" protest hits San Francisco FiDi
[Article presented without commentary]
“Why is life a bitch? Cause we don’t tax the rich!”
Such was the chant of the nearly 200 San Franciscans who surrounded the Bank of America building in the center of the Financial District Thursday afternoon to rally against bank bailouts and the country’s uneven tax structure. The rally was a west coast offshoot of the “Occupy Wall Street” protests that have continued in New York City for nearly two weeks.
The initially-peaceful crowd included families, children, dogs and bands playing drums, saxophones and banjos. Mayoral candidate and city Supervisor John Avalos opened the march with a speech that attacked big banks.
“Have you ever felt like you’ve been had?” he asked the crowd. “That’s why this building right here is a symbol of the incredible greed and wealth that has accumulated into fewer and fewer hands.”
“And how do they stay wealthy?” he added. “They took our tax dollars. They got bailed out.” Avalos then urged crowd members to take their money out of national banks and invest it in smaller, community banks that care about local concerns.
The demonstrators then marched down Montgomery Street to Charles Schwab, surrounding the building and baffling employees inside. Protestors beat drums, sang songs and chanted, “Charles Schwab, give us our money back” and “Who bailed the banks out? We bailed the banks out.”

I saw these protests yesterday when I was going for a walk, protesting outside a retail branch of Chase on Market and 2nd. Why specifically they’re protesting outside a retail branch, as opposed to the corporate offices, I don’t know.
Also, I understand Charles Schwab is a “big bank” and their building logo is highly visible, but it seems kinda silly to chide them for the bailouts and asking for “[their] money back” when Charles Schwab didn’t participate in TARP.

Putting aside my personal feelings on the issue, I understand “Wall Street” is a convenient target, but doing this stuff just makes it way too easy to dismiss them and it affects the same “99%” that they claim to represent.

It also seems silly to protest against TARP when it hasn’t cost us anything. Protest the nationalisation of the insurers, hippies. Go after the tax structure all you want, but if you think you really would rather the banks weren’t bailed out, you have a much stronger tolerance for worldwide depression than most.
I’ll also bring up the point that it’s kinda silly to protest against companies that were essentially forced to take TARP (you know which ones those are).
Hell, sounds like they should be “occupying” D.C., not Wall Street.

I’ve always been very interested to see how all the banks balance sheets would look if they had to writeoff their losses on mortgages and related products, instead of trying to slowly recapitalize for years by delaying those writeoffs….

TARP isn’t the problem (that worked out OK).
Rich assholes are the problem. OH! And wouldn’t you know it, a lot of them are in finance!
What does that even mean? What are they protesting? That they don’t pay enough taxes? Fine, once again, that’s the government’s decision, not theirs. Campaign finance? Same thing.

I’m wondering, what would you suggest people should have done? When the rich assholes in government and finance worked together to create an artificial bubble of overvalued shit? Should I have lived in a cave? Wearing a wolf-skin pelt and eating lichen?
Because, you’re right, in that case, I wouldn’t have been affected by the economic downturn. I’d still be sitting on my stalagmite in the dank darkness.
Perhaps the rental market was odd for where they were living. Or just particularly over-valued.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Sure, there are potential problems on either side
It can’t all be blamed on the evil big corporate banks
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
Well, it’s a complex problem with a lot of different layers. There is definitely blame to be allocated to people who over-extended themselves. There is blame to be allocated to people who deliberately targeted people who shouldn’t have been approved for mortgages. You can keep going up the chain. What I object to is 1) the complete lack of regulation over investment mechanisms used to repackage debt, 2) the lack of visibility into credit default swaps, and 3) people pretending like they did nothing wrong because their deceptive practices weren’t specifically against the rules.
Also, I suspect that the bulk of the damage wasn’t done by the majority of the people making stupid decisions.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I think both sides share equal blame. “The people” ARE stupid.

Back in the day
It was impossible to make a bad home purchase. No matter how bad the loan terms or how unqualified the buyer, prices just kept going up (from 2001 to October 2005) and you could easily sell any house for more than you paid. The thinking at the time was that perhaps the cyclical nature of the real estate cycle was broken and price would go up unendingly. Mortage brokers, real estate brokers and investors were all making lots of $$ and had no reason to expect things to change (unless they were students of history).
How many does it take to make a mind-numbingly stupid medical decision?

California Golden Bears: 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at!
by atomsareenough on Sep 30, 2011 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions
My thought process is: if I were an average non-exec banker type working for a big company who’s goal was to make lots of money, I’d probably push forth loans on everyone to keep up with the Joneses’ of the industry…shit, everyone else is doing it, right? To not do so, in fact, would look out of place and foolish, and I might lose my job. I wouldn’t think myself “evil,” especially if all this is under the good graces of the government and the people getting the loans seem so super happy to live in Tracy or San Berdoo or whatever. Everything’s gravy.
On the flip side, as a prospective homebuyer, I would never in a million years go after a lot of housing stock at anywhere near the prices they were being offered at with the loans being packaged. Everything smacked of “bubble”, everything smacked of “too good to be true”, everything smacked of “this will end badly” given what these homes were, and where they were. So that’s where I’m coming from.
In the end, I really genuinely think that both “parties” were equally at fault.

Can I make a point here?
Its not just people who bought houses outside of their price range and are poor.
Its people who had RIDICULOUS amounts of equity all of a suddena nd everybody was saying “Youd be stupid NOT to use that to make money.”
Well-respected financial people saying “Take the money out of your house and use it to invest or pay for college or osmething.” Then, everything tanks and all of a sudden house values are far lower.
So, now you are underwater. So, its not just a bunch of dumbos who went and bought a house in Merced for 400K, its people all over America who thought they were making prudent financial decisions. Make your money work for you!

I think if this were in anyone’s mind then the safety one using ones’ equity would be a lot more questionable. You are correct, the problem you identify is an unfortunate one, but it stems from the idea the home prices would simply continue rising, making refi a “safe” option. Not the other way around…

doesn’t everything seem obvious in retrospect? There was a place I was sort of interested in in Laguna Beach but they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for it… the real estate agent was sooooo over playing it… I can’t quite remember what the amount were but I remember thinking there is no way in 30 years that multiple could be right.

i actually feel bad for people who tried to buy into the American dream at the height and were slammed. A good example (and I think I posted this before) is the Inland Empire in southern California. Lots of people bought their dream homes there. They could afford them as they were less expensive than if they were in LA or Orange counties. They had long commutes but it was worth it to get this piece of the American dream. Then oil prices took off, the economy tanked and life became very hard.
I do not feel bad for a single person who wants to live in the Inland Empire.

Fair enough.
I’ve been struck that there’s been a sudden spate of “for sale” signs in our neighborhood, which was largely untouched by the meltdown a couple of years ago. The usual market spike is March – July. It makes me wonder if people have given up waiting for the market to rebound, long term unemployment at white collar level is finally kicking in, or juggling refinances finally failed.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
After a little Googling, you shouldn't blame the consumers
However, according a May 2006 Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) report, finance-related occupations, including accountants, mortgage brokers, and lenders, were the most common suspect occupations associated with reported mortgage fraud2. Perpetrators in these occupations are familiar with the mortgage loan process and therefore know how to exploit vulnerabilities in the system.
http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/mortgage-fraud-2006/2006-mortgage-fraud-report
And just in case that wasn’t enough, the 2010 FBI report finds that
Mortgage fraud perpetrators include licensed/registered and non-licensed/registered mortgage brokers, lenders, appraisers, underwriters, accountants, real estate agents, settlement attorneys, land developers, investors, builders, bank account representatives, and trust account representatives.Notice that homeowners aren’t even listed.
I’ve been relatively unscathed by the downturn for this exact reason. If we’d overextended and bought a house, who knows what would have happened. But instead we’ve been renting.

I hate this argument, 95% (if not more) the consumers did nothing wrong, and the ones who did over extend themselves should have been stopped by (professional) appraisers & loan officers. It’s the professionals who should be the adults in this situation, and splitting the blame 50/50 just seems wrong to me.

At the moment of the crisis, bailouts may very well be the only way to save the economy. But once the crisis has passed, more long-term solutions need to be found. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to have the will to seriously undertake long-term solutions.
Well, it’s not clear whether or not we had to save the banks creditors. With all the credit default swaps out there saving the creditors may have saved the entire global system from collapsing. However, if we could have done less bailing out and more creditor losses without crashing the whole system….it probably would have been better. I don’t have an answer to which one was right, depends on a lot of information I don’t have.

Very close – TARP was the right thing in an emergency situation.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
Probably not to find a perfect balance. Other countries have pursued the other option (basically wiping out the banks, including shareholders/creditors, firing senior management, and starting them anew) in financial crises, before, though. It seems to produce more positive results. However, like I said, there may have been so much owed by the banks that the whole world financial system would have collapsed with that route.
by Missing Barry on Sep 30, 2011 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions
yeah. I understand there may have been a better solution if we could have afforded time to analyze the different possible solutions. But it APPEARS TARP was quite essential to preventing a complete collapse. I’d gladly take on more debt to prevent that risk of a global meltdown.

Perhaps as DC suggests they were more involved in implementing Imperial policy at a lower level, but were they the main figures?

Yeah, we like to blame the English for being the evil overlords – and there’s some merit to that, they did undertake ethnic cleansing in Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries, but with the help of the locals.
However, the Scots were front and center in wreaking havoc all around the world on behalf of the empire – whether in the military, colonial administration, missionary work, etc. And when it was imperialism by investment (like in South America), they were up to their necks in it as well.

No. I wonder if maybe the parliamentary system is better than the presidential one, overall.
California Golden Bears: 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at!
by atomsareenough on Oct 4, 2011 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
The parliamentary system definitely has its positive points, in that leaders can actually get things passed, and a leader who has become widely unpopular can be gotten rid of fairly easily.
But there are also drawbacks. One problem arises if a system is too representative. In other words, the minimum number of votes for a party to get a seat needs to be fairly high, so that only a few parties get seats. If getting just 1% of the vote gets a party 5 or 10 seats, then the parliament is constantly splintered into dozens of parties and the government is always an unstable coalition, resulting in constant turnover in governments.
Britain has the opposite problem. The House of Commons actually has the possibility of being quite undemocratic, because the members are elected by district, not by the percentage of the total number of votes cast (which is done in most European countries). By combining district elections with a parliamentary system, a British party can get a majority of seats in the Commons without getting anything close to a majority of the popular vote. In other words, if the Conservative Party got 51% of the vote in 51% of the districts, and the Labour Party got 90% of the vote in 49% of the districts, the Labour Party would have a lot more votes, but the Conservatives would have the majority in the House, and thus would run the government.
Another problem in parliamentary systems exists when one or two small, extreme parties hold the balance. This can give those parties a vastly disproportionate influence on policy, since their larger coalition partners have to keep them happy to keep the government from falling, and thus the small, extreme parties get their way on things that the overwhelming majority of the public oppose.
Sure, but that’s how Congress works here, right?
And besides, the Presidency isn’t majoritarian either; we still have the electoral college. Gore won the popular vote in 2000, but Bush got the presidency.
I think your point on smaller parties is fair, but I think there’s at least a plausible counter-argument that having the extreme parties there as an outlet for extremist views lets the main parties occupy the center. So, for example, if we had a parliament and an actual Tea Party, then the Republicans wouldn’t have their party taken over by those people and could afford to be a little more centrist.
Also, since as you say, a parliamentary system allows the ruling party to actually govern without the roadblocks that our system has, if the “overwhelming majority of the public” truly opposes something, they can vote in a new ruling party and effectively reverse those policies.

On a practical level it is silly to protest against TARP – it did what it was suppose to do, which was stop the bleeding and help stabilize the financial system. However, it was enacted in a moment of crisis, and didn’t lead to any constructive changes in the banking system.
OTOH, I understand why people are upset. The gravest threat to the world economy was created by these Wall Street banks in association with AIG; these are the corporations that get bailedout (whether each one needed it doesn’t matter), they seemingly suffer no pain for getting us in this mess. Meanwhile, millions of people are unemployed, millions of others are foreclosed out of housing, their credit ruined, and the future looks bleak.
Certainly it’s populist rage, but if anything, I’m surprised it’s not stronger.

To Mr. Einhorn, the government is "not willing to take on significant misbehavior by sizable" firms. "But since there have been almost no big prosecutions, thereās very little evidence that it has stopped bad actors from behaving badly."
…But fraud at big corporations surely dwarfs by orders of magnitude the shareholdersā losses of $8 billion that Mr. Holder highlighted. If the government spent half the time trying to ferret out fraud at major companies that it does tracking pump-and-dump schemes, we might have been able to stop the financial crisis, or at least weād have a fighting chance at stopping the next one.

But with some encouragement from her sister’s now husband, who was a Florida state champion volleyball player himself, and an ultimatum of run cross country or play volleyball from her mother, Johnson picked up volleyball at age 16.
“I first thought volleyball was dumb,” Johnson said of the sport she now loves. “The high school game is so much slower that I first found it boring. But then I started to play club ball, and the game changed because it’s so much faster. That’s when I started loving volleyball.”

McCoveyChronicles on end of season press conference:
Things we knew
the pitching is going to get expensive
the Giants aren’t going to chase Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder
Aubrey Huff didn’t spend last offseason participating in triathlons.
Things we didn’t necessarily know
the Giants are legitimately interested in keeping Carlos Beltran
Nate Schierholtz is ostensibly the starting right fielder
The Giants have signed Coco Crisp to a three-year deal with a player option
Well, they didn’t explicitly say that, but, I can read between the lines.
What they said was “Leadoff hitter is a major issue” and “Thereās no center field alternative from within that weāre comfortable with.” The only CF on the market is Crisp.

Report that BoSox fired Francona:
SI.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting that even after winning a World Series in 2004 and 2007, Francona is out after eight years in Boston. The Red Sox will decline to pick up the option on Francona’s contract.
The decision was apparently made last night and may be announced today. There were differences over how things were handled this season.

Perhaps you can try to look at their different line ups etc etc etc, but thats just one (more public) part of their job, really.

Look at how player performance changes with the manager compared to with another manager.

Thats certainly the most simplistic way to do it, but it also takes into account other factors outside of the behind the scenes stuff.

That’s what sample size is for. Those other factors should regress towards 0. Also, you can control for some of the outside factors like age of a player.

or that two managers can’t manage the same team at the same time.
they get more than their share of blame/praise, but they do factor into the team’s success and failure. Look at Geren: Beane’s bud, super nice, ex-player, didn’t know how to use a bullpen, and sat Matsui for long periods of time.
Then look at Melvin: strong record of prior experience, articulate, ex-player, Cal grad, knows how to make pen mighty, and played Matsui.
Did the A’s make the playoffs? No, not even close. But Melvin did better than Geren.

or that two managers canāt manage the same team at the same time.
Why does that matter. In some cases, we do get two managers for the same team in the same year. In many, many other cases, we get players moving teams from one year to the next, or even midyear. There’s plenty of data to compare performance from one manager to the next.
didnāt know how to use a bullpen, and sat Matsui for long periods of time.
As for this, this is somewhat easier to quantify in other ways. When people have run stats on it, it really doesn’t make nearly the difference you’d think. Managers do make bad decisions on those kinds of issues – just look at Bruce Bochy. The impact on total wins, though, is pretty small in all but the most egregious cases.

Doyers hire new Director of Operations:
The Dodgers on Thursday hired Alex Tamin as Director of Baseball Contracts, Research, and Operations, essentially taking the role of Kim Ng, who left the Dodgers at the end of spring training to become a Senior VP of Baseball Operations with MLB. Tamin has been hired by various MLB teams in the past 15 years for arbitration cases, including working with the Dodgers.
Tamin, who got his law degree from UCLA in 1995, will work with General Manager Ned Colletti on all contract matters, and will be the lead person on all arbitration cases.
Ng famously helped the Dodgers to win their arbitration case with closer Eric Gagne in 2004 after the bespectacled reliever win the National League Cy Young Award the season before. The Dodgers could have another reigning Cy Young winner heading into arbitration this winter in Clayton Kershaw.
The Dodgers haven’t actually gone to an arbitration hearing since 2007, when Ng and the Dodgers won their case against Joe Beimel. But just because a team doesn’t see the inside of an arbitration hearing doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work going into it. There is a tremendous amount of research done by both sides even before filing a salary figure, and that work on the Dodgers’ side will now be done in house by Tamin.

NinersNation tallks Vicks injury:
The latest news on Michael Vick last night was that while he was planning on playing Sunday, he intends to wear a Kevlar glove to protect his bruised right hand. Players use flak jackets at times to protect their ribs, but adding something to one of your hands as a quarterback seems like it could raise some issues in the snap. My understanding is that Vick takes the snap with his left hand on top so it’s not a huge issue. But any chance for fumbles on the center-QB exchange is worth noting for the underdog 49ers.
The other interesting thing to note on Sunday will be how the referees call the game. After Vick injured his hand on Sunday, he had some choice words following the game. Vick later apologized for comments about the officiating, but he made his point clear that he feels refs don’t protect him inside the pocket like they do with other quarterbacks.

Sil;ver and Black Pride says Raiders will exploit weak NE pass rush:
While the Pats are 10th in rushing yards allowed per game. this is a mirage. Teams simply aren’t running on them often. They have faced the seventh fewest rushing attempts in the NFL at 21.3.
The Patriots are 21st in yards allowed per rush at 4.3 yards per carry.
They have been very solid in run defense when the defense needs to got off the field. With two yards or less to go on third and fourth down they are stopping teams short of the first down on runs 62 percent of the time. This is fourth in the NFL. Power rank 4th at 38 percent.
The Raiders are ninth in the NFL running the ball in these situations. They succeed 73 percent of the time.
This stiff rush defense doesn’t translate to other situations. The Patriots are stopping rushers for zero or less yards 20 percent of the time. This is 18th in the NFL.

Sharks beat Canucks, but I think its pre-season:
Plenty of story lines tonight.
First thing first, the Sharks remain undefeated, striking thrice against Vancouver’s Cory Schneider, once on the power play. It was San Jose’s fifth win of the preseason, a streak that means something in some ways but little in others.
The significance lies in the fact that the Sharks have meshed well, which is important considering the amount of changes they made in the off season. Second, the systems all seemed to be working as well as possible; the Sharks were 1 for 4 on the power play, 5 for 5 on the penalty kill and played a tight defensive style that kept Vancouver scoreless throughout the tilt.
“The guys are getting used to each other,” said Sharks’ captain Joe Thornton after the game. “It takes about two weeks, ten days, it was good to see the guys play well.”

This whole pack of people followed me down the hall, trying to get their last bit of free legal advice as I walked to the bathroom. That was a bit odd, but okay. But then one woman actually followed me into the bathroom and kept shouting wage and hour law questions through the stall door. I had to ask her if she could please wait outside until I came out. I had to promise that I wouldn’t leave without talking to her before she would go away.

When CalNet and I went to Iceland, I saw the floor to ceiling stalls for the first time. Those Scandinavians really know what they are doing. We should have those in the US.

You know what movie could have strongly benefitted from a better ending (which was, in fact, the alternate ending)?
I Am Legend
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
SPOILERS (duh)
Original Ending to I Am Legend
Due to test audience’s dislike of the film’s original ending, several scenes were altered before the film’s release, especially the standoff between Neville and the infected in his laboratory. Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs recounts the original ending, starting with the standoff: “At that point, Neville’s ā and the audience’s ā assumptions about the nature of these creatures are shown to be incorrect. We see that they have actually retained some of their humanity. There is a very important moment between the alpha male and Neville. The alpha male slapped his hand on the glass and smeared it revealing a butterfly shaped imprint.”
Neville realizes that the alpha male is identifying the woman he was experimenting on by a butterfly tattoo, and that the alpha male wants her back. Neville puts his gun down and returns the infected woman. Neville and the alpha male then exchange stares; Neville apologizes to them, which the alpha male acknowledges before the infected leave. The final shot follows Neville, Anna, and Ethan as they drive away towards Vermont
Different from the book, but a much better ending than what happened in the theatrical release. Also:
I especially like how Smith glances at his wall of photos and realizes that he must appear to be some sort of serial killer, with photos of his “kills” displayed on his wall. Very cool.
The book involved no bs “survivor’s colony” and Neville was, in fact, the last man on earth. The “I Am Legend” title refers to him being a “legend” to the infected in the same way that vampires are “legends” to us now.

Actually, glad to finally find out what happened.

As the movie was reaching its climax, I was expecting it to end much in the way the book ends (and I’d never read the book). As I was watching, I was reaching the conclusion that Neville reaches in the book, and thought it was a pretty awesome twist.
But, then the movie ended in a much more audience-friendly manner. I haven’t seen the alternate ending, but it sounds like I would’ve enjoyed that much more.

How about the awkward moment when...
you realize that he had to qualify “twist” with “pretty awesome” so that we wouldn’t mix the two of you up?
Oh 1,000% disagree, great, great movie. A western noir for the ages.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
Is it considered a Noir?
There is no cover-up, no corruption, no seedy underbelly behind a glamorous exterior. I ask because I never truly understood what makes Noir film Noir, other than the typical light-dark shadow interplay.
I support the NBA player's union.
I would consider it so mainly because the plot is driven by the actions of Josh Brolin’s character, and his actions are typical of a Noir protagonist. No unnecessary good deed (bringing the water back, why?) ever goes unpunished.
In a way “The Wild Bunch” has many Noir elements as well, it’s not just about shadows left by venetian blinds .
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
I realize Noir is more than shadows, but I always thought a cornerstone was corruption and cover-up. I didn’t see that in No Country for Old Men.
I support the NBA player's union.
I wouldn’t agree that corruption and cover-up is at all necessary, it’s more based the actions of the protagonist, what kind of obstacles he encounters and how he deals with them. For example “Out of the Past” (a great Noir movie) “The Killing”, “Naked City”, “Le Cercle Rouge” “Charley Varrick” “Rififi”, “The Maltese Falcon” (ok some cover-up in this).
To be sure, there are a fair number that do deal with corruption and cover-up, like “Chinatown”, “Double Indemnity” “Where the Sidewalk Ends”, “The Third Man”.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
I only disagree 998%

The ending was not about plot
The plot has no resolution, that’s the point. The movie tells us that there is evil in the world, and sometimes bad things happen by pure chance, and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it. You can try to be a good man like Tommy Lee Jones, but even he has to retire at some point, and the world goes on.

You are at your friend’s house waiting for him to finish his homework before you go out to play. In an attempt to amuse yourself while passing the time you draw smiley faces on each of your index fingers and attempt to annoy and distract your friend by having them start talking to one another. The finger-puppet play turns sexual, and one finger puppet begins to bang the other from behind resulting in very audible moans, right as your friend’s grandmother walks up behind you.

http://calfootballblog.com/2011/09/30/so-what-now-quarterback-tailbacks/
From a neutral standpoint, Zachās stats are decent. However, Zach is only 19/46, or 41.3%, on completions and a PER of 106.9 on 1st downs while his 3rd down stats are 24/45, or 53.5%, on completions and a PER of 166.51. It is either Zachās confidence increases as he continues to throw (even without success) or that Tedford is making the wrong calls on first down. There could be arguments for both, but seeing that Zachās PER decreases from about a PER of 173.76 in the 1st quarters to a PER of 76.13 in the 4th quarters, Iām going to lean towards the latter.
I never considered that Tedford’s calls on 3rd down > Tedford’s calls on 1st down. I think it’s more likely that Zach steps up a bit more. His completion % could be even higher, as I remember several catchable 3rd down drops.

depends on your skin, for me the astra/personna were much smoother and comfortable.

i assume you’re not trying to get all the hair at once… i typically do with grain + cross-grain + against grain… excellent shave and not much mess.
Yep. I’ve been doing with grain/cross/cross/against.
I’m usually fine until I go against. But, if I don’t go against, it’s not a better shave than my electric.
Coarse hair + sensitive skin = issues. I’m hoping that better blades are the answer.
Old Toothwrangler
How often do you have to shave, Kod?

I could probably get away with every other day…if it weren’t for the fact that I have to hover over people all day and I like to present a well-groomed appearance.

This metro area, which includes Harlingen and San Benito, is at the southwestern tip of the Lone Star State, hard against the Mexican border. The Gulf of Mexico and the popular beaches of South Padre Island are just a stoneās throw away. Rents in Brownsville average $659, more than four times cheaper than New York, the most expensive city in our annual rankings, where rents average $2,778. Utilities can be pricey, but costs for groceries and other consumer goods are exceptionally low. An affordable South Texas alternative to Brownsville is the McAllen metro area, just an hourās drive away along the Rio Grande.
No thanks.

yeah, thats the tradeoff. Austin is listed as being a really cheap place to live. True in many respects but salaries are smallish comparatively and if you make 6 figures here, you live like a king.
Then you look at the Texas cities listed on that list. Brownsville, Ft Hood, Sherman (?!?!). Fuck ALL those places, they are shitty with no jobs and little in entertainment opportunities.
I’m kind of surprised that Houston wasn’t #1. I’d always heard that the combo of high salaries and low cost of living made it the #1 bang for your buck city in the US. Lord knows, the oil companies down there pay CRAZY money. The tradeoff is having to live in Houston of course.

It’s not that good either.
I get the argument for living in a smaller city somewhere – not least that you can afford to go to more cosmopolitan places on vacation etc.
But some of these places… you’ve got to be kidding. That list included, as a selling point for Waco, that 20% of the population is college educated. Half the people in my little suburban area have advanced degrees, I don’t want to hobnob with the scruff in Waco. And, if Zillow is to be believed, the median household income is more than double Ft Hood… of course the housing prices are three times higher.

Follow-up from Last Week's Discussion on Oil / Gas Prices
Crude Oil Prices Cap Worst Quarter Since 2008 With Drop to One-Year Low
With the dollar continuing to strengthen this is good news for those us living in the US.
So last week gas prices were $3.75 / gallon for unleaded in Huntington Beach, CA. This week it’s at $3.65. 10 cents in one week is pretty good. If crude holds at these prices I’m guess it will be down at least $.50 in the coming month.
Cruzin, you reports it was at $3.89 where you were last week. Where is it now?
what kind of delay is there between crude oil prices dropping and price at the pump? there’s got to be some delay because of negotiated contracts, advanced purchase, existing supply, etc etc
Deposed (and recently graduated!) #1 Indian
there should be about a 7 day delay to take into account gas futures. But as Harsha wrote, it’s amazing how closely pump prices follow crude on the way up, but not so much on the way down.
Also, retailers usually hold prices steady on Friday for the weekend so you’ll see a bigger drop on Monday. That is unless a price war breaks out. As we discussed a few weeks ago re gold… falling price momentum can be a lot of fun.
Ugh more price wars? Why can’t we all make price love, not price war?
