DBD 9.21.11 What's YOUR Road Record?
So, we're Cal fans. Which means basically two things:
- We're smart
- We're obsessive
I think it makes a lot of sense then to look at the numbers, queried by Royrules22 in yesterday's DBD.
WHAT IS YOUR ROAD RECORD? Don't worry, I've made some awards as well.
Royrules asked and you answered. Including Ragnarok and myself (who were able to add late entries) we have 18 contenders for the title of Best Traveler and Best Record. These games were self reported so I used only the games that people reported, not out of all games in the time span.CGB Record: These (self-reported) games cover 76 games between Stanfurd in 1977 (L) and Colorado in 2011 (W). There were 32 wins, for a combined record for CGB of .4210.
The most attended games were:
- 2008 Emerald Bowl (W) - 16 Attendees
- 2005 Stanfurd (W) - 12 Attendees
- TIE: 2003&2009 Stanfurd (W,W) - 11 Attendees
- CalumbusBear - 1.0000! (Sample size = 4)
- Rishi - .7500 (Sample size = 4)
- Cugel - .6667 (Sample size = 9)
- Scootie - .3000 (Sample size = 10)
- Minesweeper - .3333 (Sample size = 6)
- Calgbear - .3636 (Sample size = 11)
- Ragnarok - 40 Games (btw 2000 Fresno State - 2011 Colorado)
- Andbears - 35 Games (btw 2001 Wazzu - 2011 Colorado)
- Cruzinbears - 26 Games (btw 1989 Stanfurd - 2009 Stanfurd)
Longest Attendance Streak (Attended not won, comparative to CGB): Ragnarok (13) between 2000 Fresno State - 2003 Utah
Rags also gets Most Obsessive Record Keeping, and just trust me on this.

Clayton Kershaw owns the Lincecum and the Giants
5 – 0 v. the Giants; 4 – 0 v. Lincecum
Years from now, we will look back on nights like tonight and tell our kids and grandkids that we watched Clayton Kershaw pitch. They won’t look at us as quizzically as we do to our elders who got to see Sandy Koufax, simply because there is ample video evidence of Kershaw’s greatness. That greatness was on display Tuesday night, as Kershaw outdueled the magnificent Tim Lincecum, again, to pick up his 20th victory as the Dodgers beat the Giants 2-1.

Giants explode for run against Kershaw, but Lincecum shelled for two runs
There really isn’t any rhyme or reason to this Kershaw/Lincecum thing. Kershaw has been better than Lincecum this year, but it’s not like the difference between Justin Verlander and Brad Penny. They’ve both been fantastic. Kershaw has an ERA just over 1.00 against the Giants this year; Lincecum’s is just under 2.00 against the Dodgers.
The Giants couldn’t beat Kershaw this year. Doing so would have triggered some Doc Brown nonsense where your mother never met your father. When Lincecum faced Kershaw, it was Lincecum who would allow the solo home run or two-out hit at the wrong time. Kershaw would do nothing of the sort, and he’ll probably win the Cy Young because of it. Almost 20% of his starts this season came against the Giants. Against the teams that aren’t the Giants, his ERA is 2.54. Lincecum’s season ERA is 2.59.

Cy Young?
If he pitches as well against the Padres as he has the rest of the 2nd half, is it his to lose? I believe he’s leading the NL in ERA, Ks, and tied in wins.

1. The Tony’s are a type of award.
2. Many Indian people work at 711.

If you’re going to, in your own words, be tasteless, at least be somewhat factually correct; the joke refers to the fact that Japanese speakers — not Chinese speakers — can’t distinguish Ls from Rs.
I’m pretty tired of the L/R meme to be honest. I don’t even think they’re even think the jokes are generally that horribly offensive; I just don’t think they’re that funny. Picture of Asian person: replace all Ls with Rs, and Rs with Ls; yawn.

Turkey bans men; 41,000 women, kids at soccer game

More than 41,000 women and children filled Sukru Saracoglu Stadium to watch Fenerbahce play against Manisapor in Turkish League soccer match in Istanbul, Turkey, Tuesday, Sept. 20. 2011. Turkey came up with a radical solution for tackling crowd violence at football matches _ ban the men and let only women and children in. Under new rules approved by Turkey’s football association, only women and children under the age of 12 will be admitted to watch games _ for free _ involving teams which have been sanctioned for unruly behavior by their fans. Fenerbahce was ordered to play two home matches without any spectators after its fans invaded the pitch during a friendly against Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk. (AP Photo/TURKPIX)
ANKARA, Turkey—Turkey tried a new approach to curbing crowd violence at soccer games — kick out all the men but let women and children attend for free.
Under new rules approved by Turkey’s soccer association, only women and children under 12 will be admitted to games involving teams sanctioned for unruly fan behavior.
On Tuesday, Fenerbahce handed out free tickets and more than 41,000 women and children attended the game against Manisaspor in Istanbul. Women formed long lines around Sukru Saracoglu stadium, some carrying babies in the team’s colors, for an opportunity to watch the club.
Before the game, Fenerbahce and Manisaspor players tossed flowers at the fans. The visiting team was greeted with applause, instead of the usual jeering, the Anatolia news agency reported.
“This memory will stay with me forever,” Fenerbahce captain Alex de Sousa said. “It’s not always that you see so many women and children in one game.”
Manisaspor midfielder Omer Aysan added: “It was such a fun and pleasant atmosphere.”
Fenerbache tends to have some of the most ridiculous Turkish soccer fans… they’re the ones who give all of the bad rep to Turkish sports fans. Still, they are all a very impassioned group.
And for a country as much straddling the Western/Middle Eastern fence, this is an awesome idea.
i’m actually downloaded the match last night only to hear what they sound like. some of the noise coming from the stands at a normal fenerbache game is amazing…and it’s hard to imagine what an entire women+children crowd at a sporting event sounds like. gonna check it out when i get a chance.
i remember being in a taxi driving by a fenerbache game in progress… the entire stadium was singing their song in unison. didn’t understand a lick of it, but it was amazing. no piped in music or anything.
one of my buddies actually went to a Galatasaray game (they have their own island in the Bosphorus, and apparently a pool for some kick ass pool parties) and claimed that despite not knowing any turkish, it was easy enough to pick up and sing along.
Fenerbahce’s also been accused/implicated in some match-fixing scandal last season. They’re been a fire sale of their top players during the past transfer window.

I’m wondering if we should do another analysis of “Far Games” vs “Close Games” — like you get more points for going to Tennesse than to LA.
Cal: Bears with Books.
and gambling spreads… who is a jinx going to games (i.e. going to a game you should have lost by a lot, and didn’t, etc etc)
I’ve been to two away games for UCLA and we lost both (one was expected, one was a huge upset)
My friend who lives in Arizona was a HUGE jinx. Didn’t help that he only went to games in Arizona and LA…
Cal: Bears with Books.
Yeah, but if you adjust it for spread (which is a reasonable substitute for expectation) you might find that Cal actually was, say closer in those games than expected? Just giving more potential ways to waste time here :)
You’ll have to help me with the spread, where can I find it? So I’m thinking spread vs game outcome means either ‘As expected’, ‘Close’, ‘Upset’… and then more JINX points accumulated if you attended ‘close’ or ‘upset’.
So far, Total time wasted on calculating = 2.5hrs last night + 1hr at work… whoops!
Cal: Bears with Books.
Can’t find the links at work (anything gamlin’ related is blocked) so will have to follow up later tonight if I remember!
Spreads are usually done in such a way that there is no “push”… so it would just be recalculating the score differential to redefine wins vs losses. But of course you could assign different weights to those levels (i.e. beat spread by x amount 2 points, lose spread by x points, -2 points, etc etc)
my brother’s a ucla guy, and the only ucla-usc game that he’s missed since he’s been a student/alum is the one that the ’ruins won.
That’s the only one I’ve had a chance to go to in the last 5 years. Regardless of the outcome, I think it was the best game I’ve been to ever.
he’s not happy he missed it (buddy’s give me a hard time about that one, but hey, working in dc at the time). and he’s not happy that the win probably gave dorrell a few more years on campus to further the ruin of the bruins.
You mean 13-9?

It was just extremely unfortunate because that was by far the fastest I had been going on the whole roadtrip (~10hrs of driving). My average highway speed was probably 75. I just happened to speed up at that moment to pass a guy, and also happened to be going slightly down hill, 5 lanes of traffic, wide road etc…. I saw the siren before I saw how fast I was going. And he gave me no break. 92 was 92.

I distinctly remember the 2001 game, bc afterwards we were like 0-7 or whatever and the band started singing the team record continuity on the march out of the stadium.
I think that that was the start of that aprticular band tradition, one that has continued to this day. That always intrigued me.

Need help with Napa area wineries!
Since we have experts on everything here, apparently, why not tap into this?
So I’m helping plan a birthday party for a friend that involves wine tasting. Taking a shuttle from SF to Napa and we get to choose our own wineries, I think we have it for four hours?
Given the people going on this trip, however, the goal is not to go to the absolute best wineries (with tastings that cost $20 for two glasses), but the ones that maximize utility. The ones that offer the most tastings for the best price (generous pours are a bonus), and it’s better if the wineries themselves are at least nice to look at (for photos). The only one that comes to mind here is Robert Mondavi — definitely not my favourite, but it fits the criteria above.
So, any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks!
Here’s a cute puppy for your help

2011 World Cup Champions Team India
if Sonoma works, I can ask one of my friends that did a similar trip… don’t know about Napa though. apologies.
Deposed (and recently graduated!) #1 Indian
If you want utility, V. Sattui is pretty good. I think their tastings are reasonable ($5 for 5?). Also, they have food/snacks on the premises and a nice area for hanging out/picnicking. These are mostly charcuterie and cheeses, but they may also have some Italian appetizers like pasta salads, stuffed artichokes/olives, etc.
The best part is if crazy ol’ Uncle George is still working the tasting counter. He’s somewhat famous for drinking along with the guests. As he gets more and more…happy, he starts giving out more and more generous pours…then some free glasses…and occasionally breaks into the really good stuff in the back.
The Napa locals like Friday night tasting from 5-7 at JV Wine & Spirits, 301 First Street. $5 Wine + snacks. But, you might not be up there in time.
The only other winery that I’ve been to is Monticello. It’s on the Silverado trail. I don’t think the tastings were too expensive, but it’s more of a wine only type of place. (didn’t see food avail) The grounds are pretty, though. Depending on the evening, it looks like they also hold outdoors cooking or gourmet food events. If you call ahead, they might be able to give you a group rate on wine/cheese tasting or dinner. We liked their wines, but we primarily dropped by to get their special “Cal” etched bottle. One nice thing is that it’s relatively close to the big public market which is a decent hang-out for food, more wine, and just browsing around.
Old Toothwrangler
V. Sattui seems really clutch! Thanks.
In case we wanted to do a tour, it looks like the wine tours all cost money. When did this happen?!
So far on the agenda, V. Sattui and Domaine Chandon (not the cheapest, but I feel champagne for a birthday is kinda necessary).
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
Chandon is pretty good value – full glasses IIRC. Also, free tour unless it’s changed in the last 2-3 years.

Definitely Domaine Chandon. V. Sattui, meh, take it or leave it. Too over-run with tourists and the wine is only so-so, but boy do they pour it.
If you want something nicer and with better wine, pay the money and go to Sterling and take the tram. You can probably find some coupons online to make it cheaper than the $25 per person.
I’m also a big fan of Duckhorn. They have an amazing facility and tasting room, not sure about a tour.
Cakebread is also a nice one and Beringer has that nice historic building. I’d also recommend Beaulieu Vineyards (BV).
For food, there’s Dean & Deluca or Oakville Grocery is totally money.
I’m definitely thinking Oakville Grocery for sandwiches before hitting up the wineries. I love that place.
I did Cakebread with my cousin recently and quite liked it.
Any opinions on the ones I listed below (V. Sattui, Rutherford, William Hill, and Domaine Chandon) or Louis M Martini?
Thanks!
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
I have to weigh in on this, V. Sattui wine itself is not very good. Wasn’t impressed with Sterling wines either, but I guess the tram has some touristy cache. Others mentioned are good; the wine is worth it.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
But Sattui has generous pours, right? I think that’s a worthwhile factor!
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
Sattui gets really crowded inside, but the guys behind the pouring counter were nice and informative.
They also have a 1998 vintage port that is delicious.
by Yes We Cannon on Sep 21, 2011 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions
Have you checked our Prager for port style? They basically make 4 wines, 3 port style and a petite sirah (that is also used as the basis of one of their port style wines).

I’ve never been, but one of the banks I work with is always giving gift baskets of their “exclusive” wine, and I’m not impressed. Kind of a poster child for what’s wrong with a lot of California wines. (god I sound like such a snob, but I’m not!! really!!).

Heh.
Yeah, Sattui is more of a fun “let’s get buzzed” spot than a wine snob spot. But it sounded like that’s what Rishi was asking for.
Most Sterling wines are only okay. One of my friends gave us a bottle of their select ($100?) for our anniversary and it was quite, good. Unfortunately, that’s way out of our price range for casual consumption.

I agree.
2007 was just disgusting. It left such a bad taste in my mouth.
Let’s see:
- A small punk Furd Safety/CB taunts Cal fans by coming close to our section and pointing to scoreboard
- Stupid red zone or whatever shit the Furd fans did on 3rd down.
- Longshore throws the most predictable pick that I’ve ever seen to that small punk
- Hawk drops the ball right in front of my eyes that would’ve won the game
- Furd fans rush the field
In other words, Go Bears!
and i get angry about stupid things because of those games… like instead of being 2-2 against us it would have meant Hairball was only 1-3 against us…
Like the tie to SC in ’90… We should have WON that game… or the loss in 92… when Gilby choked away the game…
Gah, I just wanted Harbaugh to start his Stanfurd coaching career with a Big Game loss.

New track director of operations:
BERKELEY – With a wealth of experience that spans from the college ranks to the international stage, John Dagata has joined the California track & field staff as director of operations. In addition, he will oversee the Golden Bear throwing events.
Most recently head of coaching for Welsh Athletics from 2009-11, Dagata also served as head coach of the 2011 Great Britain World University Games track & field team, helping the squad capture three of the country’s five total medals in Shenzhen, China. In 2010, he was head coach for the successful Welsh Commonwealth Games squad that competed in New Delhi, India, and advanced all 22 of its team members to the finals, and throws coach for the Great Britain IAAF World Junior Championships team that captured eight medals, including gold by Sophie Hitchon in the hammer.
In response to the success in India, Dagata and the performance team designed what is now the “Progressing Coaching for Performance Plan,” which secured additional funding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

5K run for Jill:
SAN FRANCISCO – Blue & Gold filled Golden Gate Park on Sept. 18 as former and current Golden Bears and members of the California Athletics Department joined the movement to cure lung cancer at the Your Next Step Is the Cure 5K Walk/Run. Organized by the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, the Cal Athletics family participated in the event in honor of former Cal coxswain Jill Costello as well as Frank Renda, father to Cal baseball’s Tony Renda.
Over $300,000 was raised with Cal student-athletes, coaches and staff raised over $4,500. The entire men’s crew team offered its services to help with registration and shirt distribution.
“The rowing world is very small and with the loss of Jill, my teammates and I were really happy we go to help put on this event,” current men’s rower Chris Yeager said. “It was great to be out there helping to support lung cancer in honor of Jill. She had a huge presence at these events and it is really nice to see so many people come out for the cause.”

VBall heads to LA:
ERKELEY – The road to San Antonio is no easy path for the No. 1 California volleyball team, which heads south to face off against No. 12 USC and No. 7 UCLA after a grueling first week of Pac-12 play. With them on their trip to La-La Land, the Golden Bears carry an undefeated overall and conference record in addition to their superlative ranking. On Friday, Sept. 23, the Bears (13-0, 3-0) take on USC (7-3, 2-1) at 7 p.m. in a replay of the semifinal match of the 2010 NCAA Championship. Saturday, Sept. 24 will see Cal take on its baby sister ursine in UCLA (9-2, 2-1) at 7 p.m.
Rostratter Named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week
Junior defensive specialist Robin Rostratter made 69 digs to average an incredible 6.90 per set, making her the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Week. Last week, she also chipped in five assists, four of which came versus Utah on Sept. 17. The award is Rostratter’s first ever Pac-12 player of the week laurel and Cal’s 29th all-time. On Sept. 13 in the biggest match of the season to date – at home versus the rival Cardinal – Rostratter shone by amassing 29 digs to halt the Stanford attack, led by the Pac-12’s No. 1 killer in Rachel Williams. Those 29 digs set a new Rostratter career high, blasting her previous season high of 19 and bested her career high with 27, which was set last year in a match that went five sets as compared to the four against Stanford on Sept. 13. Not to be outdone, Rostratter put up 23 digs against Colorado and 17 versus Utah to average an incredibly impressive 6.90 digs per set. She also helped out the Bears on the offensive side with four assists against Utah, which tied a season high. Additionally, she tied her season best with one attack vs. Colorado.

Mewns Soccer to take on Vermont:
BERKELEY – The California men’s soccer team heads to the Farm this Friday for the Golden Bears’ first-ever meeting with Vermont at 4:30 p.m. in the Stanford Nike Classic. The Golden Bears, looking to rebound after a loss in their last game, bring a 2-2-2 record into the nonconference match with the Catamounts (5-1-0) at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Scouting the Golden Bears
Junior forward John Fitzpatrick scored his team-leading third goal in Cal’s 4-2 loss to Santa Clara on Sept. 16; he also paces the Bears with six points on the year. Seth Casiple ranks second in points with four. The freshman midfielder has four assists, including one on Fitzpatrick’s goal against the Broncos. Sophomore goalkeeper Robby Gogatz has compiled a 1.68 goals-against average and two shutouts after playing every minute in goal for Cal in 2011.

Womens Swimming to start season:
BERKELEY – The California women’s swimming team takes to the road to start the 2011-12 season when the defending NCAA champion swims at the Cal Poly Queen of the Pool competition Friday, Sept. 23, and nontraditional relays Saturday, Sept. 24, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Friday features five 100-yard events. The swimmer who posts the lowest combined times in the 100-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 individual medley is crowned the Queen of the Pool. Caitlin Leverenz has reigned as the Queen of the Pool over the past two years for head coach Teri McKeever and the Golden Bears, who captured another crown when they won their second NCAA team title in three years last March.
Cal Poly serves as host to both Cal men’s and women’s squads this week – though there is no diving – as the men vie for the King of the Pool title.
Scouting the Golden Bears
Teri McKeever put together another skilled roster, from the NCAA-winning veterans to the talented freshman class. Returners include
- Senior Liv Jensen, the 2009 NCAA 50-yard freestyle champion who swam on all five Cal relays at 2011 NCAAs including the winning 200-free and 200 and 400 medley relays.
- Senior Sara Isakovic, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the 200-meter free and a four-time All-American last year.
- Leverenz, a Cal junior, national champion on Cal’s two medley relays last March and rising star on the U.S. national team who compete at the World Championships this summer.
- Sophomore Cindy Tran, the 2011 NCAA champ in the 100-yard backstroke and as part of both medley relays.
- Sophomore Deborah Roth, the 2011 NCAA runner-up in the 100 back and All-American in the 200 back.
- Sophomore Stephanie Au, a 2008 Olympian from Hong Kong and 2011 honorable mention All-American in the 200 back.

NinersNation talks, what else, Moran Norris:
On Monday, 49ers fullback Moran Norris was spotted at team headquarters with an orthopedic boot on his left. There is no word yet on his availability for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. While we won’t have any solid answers today, we’ll have some more clues through the practice participation report. Coach Harbaugh will chat with the press during the day but I’d guess Norris is simply “working on something.”
One of the long running discussions that doesn’t really have a whole ton of disagreement revolves around Norris. I’d argue it reached its zenith last year in the opener against Seattle when Norris could not come down with a 4th and 1 pass at the Seattle 6 that would have been an easy touchdown and given the 49ers a 10-0 lead. There have been some moments of fury since then, but that really was “the moment” for many fans.
People have voiced complaints left, right and center. I’m curious if people have thoughts on why Norris has managed to stick around this year? I’m not sure I buy the Frank Gore connection nearly as much with a new coaching staff. So, what is it? His performance on Sunday was a mix of good and bad with a couple really good blocks and a couple bad misses.

SilverAndBlackPride gives Power Rankings:
The Bills are getting a lot of respect already this season. This became apparent when I saw the Raiders jumped from No. 24 to No. 23 in SB Nation’s power rankings, after losing to the Bills.
After the Raiders pitiful defensive performance last week it is impossible to argue they should be higher, but I am going to do it anyway.
The Raiders are directly behind three NFC West teams. The Rams, Cardinals and 49ers are ascend in that order in front of them.
I have seen absolutely nothing from the Rams to tell me they could hang with the Raiders. Their offense is too inept to blow through the holes in the Raiders D, and their defense has struggled. The Cardinals have shown flashes of competency, but not as much as the Raiders. As for the 49ers, well the Raiders just don’t seem to match up well at all with them, so they can go ahead and stay in front.

FearTheFin interview Sharks GM:
Last season when Joe Thornton was suspended, the organization was strong in their assertion that a two game suspension for that type of hit was not appropriate. Following that, have you been pleased with the discussions surrounding Rule 48, whether it be at GM meetings or otherwise?
You have the opportunity to air your thoughts, and as long as you have that forum, yes we do. We think our League is very proactive in trying to make this a good, safe environment for our players while continuing to keep what makes our game unique. The Thornton situation, we spoke at that time because it was—we felt the way we did because of the uniqueness of what occurred. We felt it was similar to another hit that took place between Willie Mitchell and Jonathan Toews.
We support the new rule, we support what we’re trying to accomplish in this League in order to make it a safe environment, but within that, there are situations that we took a position on. We felt that way, we spoke our mind, we supported our player, and once that decision is made, you have to move forward. Unfortunately their player was injured and is still injured today. We don’t like to see that happen.
Is there any rule in the NHL that you would like to add or change?
When we did this rules package [coming out of the lockout], you have to understand the impact of all the different rules and how they are connected. So when we wrote up the rules package it wasn’t just “one rule, one rule”, it was how many of them would take place. The game has sped up. You eliminated the hooking and the holding and some things that took place. I was not a big supporter of the trapezoid—

Dial 1900 4COACHP
Arizona: home to Spring Training and now, two recent defensive back commits for California.
At about 3 PM on Tuesday, three-star safety Zach Hoffpauir gave a ring to Bears head coach Jeff Tedford, but when he didn’t get an answer, he rang defensive coordinator — and Arizona area recruiter — Clancy Pendergast to give him the news.
“It was about three o’clock today, actually a little earlier, about 2:30, and I called coach Pendergast and told him,” Hoffpauir told BearTerritory on Tuesday night. “I tried to call coach Tedford, but he couldn’t pick up, but I told coach Pendergast today.”
Hoffpauir last visited Berkeley over the summer on an unofficial visit during one of Cal’s football camps.
“I worked out a little bit, then I went and saw the facilities that are being built and all that stuff,” Hoffpauir said. “Then, I got to meet all the coaches and they told us all about it.”
Hoffpauir eventually hopes to take an official trip up to Berkeley.
Pendergast — the former defensive coordinator for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals — is a native of the Grand Canyon State, and was Hoffpauir’s primary recruiter. This is the second straight year Pendergast has gone back to the old homestead to pick up a defensive back, signing now-greyshirt Jordan Morgan last year.
“He had come down to see me a few times, and he was the one I’d been in touch with a lot,” Hoffpauir said. “I loved everything about the place when I went there on an unofficial visit. I loved coach Pendergast, coach Tedford, coach [Ashley] Ambrose, and I feel that I have a pretty good chance of competing as a freshman for a spot. I liked their baseball program when I was there, too.”
Hoffpauir — a center fielder and sometimes catcher — will not only play football for Cal come next year, but he’ll make like current tight end Jacob Wark and suit up on the diamond, as well.
“I talked with the baseball coaches, and I like everything about Cal,” Hoffpauir said. “[Playing two sports] is what I would like to do, and that’s what I’m planning to do.”
“It was pretty amazing that they could go from almost not being a program to going to the College World Series, which is a really good thing. I’d talked to some of the coaches at the Area Code Games, and I really liked them and I like coach [David] Esquer, so altogether, I like everything about it.”
Last season for Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial, Hoffpauir hit .356 with 16 RBI, 26 runs scored, four triples and a .667 slugging percentage. He mashed seven doubles and four homers, to go along with four triples.

Pac-12 hawt and naught
Who’s hot and who’s not in the Pac-12?
Here’s a random sampling.
Hot: Stanford’s defense. It ranks seventh in the nation in scoring, holding foes to just nine points per game. It ranks fifth in the nation with 13 sacks. It ranks No. 2 in the nation against the run. Sophomore DE Ben Gardner leads the conference with 5.5 tackles for a loss. LB Chase Thomas is tied for first in the conference with four sacks.
Not: Washington’s and UCLA’s defense. The Huskies rank 108th in the nation in total defense and 107th in scoring defense. The Bruins rank in the 100s in run defense (108), scoring defense (103), total defense (100) and tackles for a loss (111).
Hot: Tedfords. California coach Jeff Tedford won his 75th game at Cal to make him the Bears all-time winningest coach, and his son, junior receiver Quinn Tedford, caught his first career pass in the win over Presbyterian.
Not: Defensive injuries. Stanford LB Shayne Skov is done for the year due to a knee injury and Arizona State DE Junior Onyeali also is likely done for the year with a knee injury. Skov is a certain first-team All-Pac-12 linebacker, and Onyeali was a good bet for that postseason honor, too. Two great players, two great teammates, two great big drags.
Hot: Utah opportunism. The Utes forced seven turnovers, including six fumbles, in their blowout win over BYU.
Not: Arizona’s running game. The Wildcats rank 116th in the nation with 55.67 yards per game.
Hot: Giorgio Tavecchio. The Cal kicker missed three of his first nine PATs but he was 9 for 9 against Presbyterian.
Not: Jaime Salazar. The Arizona kicker has lost his job after making just 1 of 4 field goals. He missed all three outside of 30 yards and also missed a PAT.
Hot: UCLA kicker/punter Jeff Locke. Locke averaged 48.8 yards on four punts against Texas and was 2 for 2 on field goals with a long of 51 yards, as he stepped in for normal kicker Kip Smith.
Not: Stanford punting: The Cardinal ranks 94th in the nation in net punting at 34.75 per boot.
Hot: Oregon’s run offense: The Ducks rank eighth in the nation in rushing with 261 yards per game.
Not: Oregon run defense. The Ducks rank 107th in the nation against the run (214.33 yards per game).
Hot: A dual threat Buffalo. Colorado RB Rodney Stewart had 98 yards rushing and 93 yards receiving against Colorado State.
Not: Colorado’s kickoff returns. The Buffs rank 120th — last — in the nation in kickoff returns (14.67 per return).

Crumpacker has a shotgun snap fetish he asks about it at least once a week
Though the play of quarterback Zach Maynard has been encouraging for Cal in its 3-0 start, the job the man snapping him the ball has done is cause for concern.
Center Dominic Galas’ snaps to Maynard in shotgun formation have been all over the place, often arriving in slow, lazy arcs or off to the side.
Admitting Galas’ shotgun snaps are on a list of things to improve for the Bears, head coach Jeff Tedford said, “Just keep practicing, keep working. It’s like any position that needs to improve. It just takes practice. There’s no special remedy for it.”
At Washington on Saturday, Galas will have his hands full with Huskies defensive tackle Alameda Ta-amu, merely 337 pounds. Galas goes 290.
“He has a pretty big test every day playing against Moala,” Tedford said, referring to 350-360-pound freshman Viliami Moala. “He gets good work against Moala.”
With his fourth career start in Saturday’s absurd game against Presbyterian College, Galas became part of a Cal offensive line that combined for 100 career starts, with left tackle Mitchell Schwartz (41), left guard Brian Schwenke (15), right guard Justin Cheadle (25) and right tackle Matt Summers-Gavin (15).
“That’s pretty nice,” Cheadle said of the century mark. “A lot of the guys I’ve been playing with have a lot of experience. It’s beneficial because you know everyone on the line has been in that position before. You know the guys around you know what they’re doing. They don’t have that fear factor.”
Frosh honored: In his first college game, freshman Brendan Bigelow was named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his work against Presbyterian. Bigelow became the first Golden Bear since Lavelle Hawkins in 2007 to return a kickoff for a touchdown when he scooted 88 yards untouched against the Blue Hose.
Bigelow also rushed twice for 15 yards, had one reception for 11 yards and had 137 all-purpose yards.
Tedford said he will look for ways to get Bigelow on the field beyond returning kickoffs.
“We’ll see what fits for him,” the coach said. “We’ll continue to get his feet wet.”
Briefly: When the Bears score 30 or more points under Tedford, they usually win, as in 58-5 since 2002. Cal has scored 36, 36 and 63 points this season. … Redshirt freshman wide receiver Kaelin Clay remains out of practice and ineligible for games because of an academic issue.

I love these insightful stats
When the Bears score 30 or more points under Tedford, they usually win, as in 58-5 since 2002.
I’m guessing, without looking it up, that most teams would have a similar winning percentage if they score 30 or more points… Most teams.
Off the top of my head, the losses were:
Nevada…. ok that didn’t go to well. Though in fairness to me, I wasn’t here in the early years.
I support the NBA player's union.
The other 4 losses
vs. WSU in 2002 (38-48)
vs. Arizona in 2002 (41-52)
Holiday Bowl in 2004 (31-45)
@ Ucla in 2005 (40-47)

Melvin Hired by A's
Bob Melvin saw the not-so-upbeat portrayal of former A’s manager Art Howe by Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and he playfully was asked if he still wants to work for Billy Beane.
“I do,” said Melvin, who recalled a scene in Monday’s “Moneyball” premiere indicating a tense relationship between Beane and Howe. “I did see that chair come flying out of the manager’s office.”

Not bad. It's not like the A's are going to hire a big name manager anyway.

Anemic, but winning "Road" Record
1989 – Stanfurd (L)
1991 – UCLA (W)
1991 – Stanfurd (L)
2003 – Insight Bowl Virginia Tech (W)
2008 – Emerald Bowl Miami (W)
I wouldn’t count four of these as “road” games. But at 3-2, I’ll take it.

I don’t know… last Big Game down there was pretty damn worth it… Although I do disagree Circus Minimus is soulless… so I guess it’s perfect.
Prophet!
Hell yes, it was worth it.
Not only did Cal secure a last-minute victory with an interception, but Cal fans lustily booed Tiger Woods, an action that would be envied by millions the world over a mere fortnight hence.

and once again I show how I change one word in a sentence to totally change the meaning… I mean to say I don’t disagree…
That game was simply epic. Absolutely epic.
Wait, what?
Do you don’t disagree about Circus Minimus being soulless?
Or is it that you don’t disagree that going to the Farm isn’t worth it? My wife absolutely agrees with you on that. She has NEVER seen a Cal victory on The Farm. Her last Big Game at Stanf*rd was 1991. ’Nuff said.

Um, Friday string beans running elevator?
I meant to say
Although I don’t disagree Circus Minimus is soulless… I do that all the time… I really need to proof more.
91 Big Game I was down on the field when this dickhead furd photographer walked by me… guy was probably a willie nelson 70… and he makes some snide comment about “that team sure doesn’t look like the #6 team in the country…” I wanted to punch him in the face.
Wow, what a snot. I’d have also wanted to punch the rat bastard in the face.
Going back to the stadium for a moment: I generally agree that Circus Minimus is generally a soulless place; it’s so sterile and so boxy. It does not evoke its predecessor, at all (not even that butt-ugly press box).
But I must confess that while the Old Gray Lady had many faults (dirty, decrepit, crappy sightlines, stupid ass chain link fence in its later years and Santa Clara Goon Squad, inadequate concourse, restrooms, and concessions, etc., etc.), I always felt connection with earlier generations of college football fans in that cathedral. Maybe more so because most of the times I attended a game there was for The Big Game (I also saw Shrine Games there). And I’ve been there when it rained (‘83 was a steady drizzle the entire day), I’ve been there when it was sunny and crisp (’93 and Lindsay Chapman running over and around the ’Furddies for three (four?) TDs).
I’ve been there with friends who rooted for the Blue and Gold and friends who rooted for the Cardinal. The shared experience of standing for the National Anthem and feeling the floorboards sag under the collective weight of the row’s occupants and then singing the Star Spangled Banner over the Lone Trumpeter with other Cal fans. Praying for a miracle finish in the 4th quarter in 1985 as Cal clawed back from something like an 18-point deficit. Absolute elation as Cal blew the doors off Stanf*rd behind a great performance from Geoff MacArthur. Thrilling to the sight of the 2005 crowd as Blue and Gold seemingly outnumbered Cardinal in their house.
All this I remember with clarity and pride and associate it with the Old Gray Lady. Maybe Circus Minimus will yield a multitude of hallowed memories eventually, but for right now I have only two games with which to associate it: one that made me angry (2007) and one that gave me great joy after a moment of halftime comedy (2009). It’s not much to build on, but I can hope that there will be great contests within those walls that will echo for years to come.

great post
I share your sentiments (shocking I know). Something about the shadows and echos of history in the old place…
A couple of my favorite Old Stanfurd Stadium memories…
Big Game ’91… just before the half furd was going for a field goal into the CAL section. From the field I was able to get the entire CAL section in the enclosed end of the stadium to get their hands up and clap and low and behold, the furd missed the field goal. Although the game turned out sucking, it was a great micro moment.
Shrine Game ’91… Just being at the game and watching my roommate and good friends playing… it was just cool. Plus I also appreciated all the Shrine Games from years passed and what they meant to the kids in the hospital.
Big Game ’93… The sure elation of the CAL crowd when we held the furd in the 4th Q with about 8 minutes to go. That was when we KNEW we had won the game, that Stanfurd would have no comeback. As the defense left the field the entire CAL crowd rose and roared en masse… I hugged my friend.. and the strangers around me. The heavens parted, golden rays of light shone through and the angels sang. All was right in the world again.
Big Game ’03… Winning back to back Big Games… Knowing that this Tedford guy had it and liking our future.
Big Game ‘05… all the things you said… including the CAL fans doing the wave and the furd fans helpless to stop it… Don’t hate me for this, but in that lone moment I felt sorry for the Stanfurd fans who were actually there… I also remember doing a very loud C-A-L cheer which my friends who were sitting diagonally across the stadium said was loud… the old guy still had it!
I hope there are more memories like that, and like Big Game ’09 in the Sterile Place.
I remember this:
Big Game ’91… just before the half furd was going for a field goal into the CAL section. From the field I was able to get the entire CAL section in the enclosed end of the stadium to get their hands up and clap and low and behold, the furd missed the field goal. Although the game turned out sucking, it was a great micro moment.
I laughed when the Furddie missed the FG. It was a bright spot in what was otherwise a dismal day. We could tell which way Tommy Vardell was running just how he lined up. The D couldn’t stop him.
As for that Big Game ‘05 thing where you felt sorry for the ’Furddies, I get it. I actually empathized with them. Losing 7 BGs in a row to your arch rival gets really depressing. But it was the realization that not only were they going to lose, and lose Big, but that they were outnumbered at home. I can’t imagine how that would feel.
Sure, it probably happened for Cal in the 1999 Nebraska game. But Nebraska isn’t our archrival. And the Cornhusker fans were nice, besides. No such thing exists with Stanfoo.
"We do not seek men who will bravely lie down to die, but men who will fight valiantly to live."

Being on the opposite side of that, outnumbering your rival in their home stadium, is an amazing feeling, though.
by Yes We Cannon on Sep 22, 2011 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes, it is.
What I should have said is how giddy I was as it became apparent as the crowd settled in that Blue & Gold outnumbered Cardinal. And it stayed that way for me. Somewhere late in the 2nd quarter, though, as we approached halftime with the ‘Furddies forlornly mute as Cal’s defense produced yet another stop, I reveled in the moment.
Even so, I could sense the silent despair of the home crowd and felt empathy for them.

Obscure College Score of the Week: Cal 63, Presbyterian 12. Football factory programs are infamous for scheduling cupcake opponents for auto-wins that please the boosters. Here is Kurt Snibbe’s wonderful illustration of the football squad at a place named Cupcake College. Even so, for Cal to schedule Presbyterian, a Division I-AA program that last season went 2-9 with losses to Stony Brook and North Greenville, seems beyond the pale. According to Yahoo! Sports, Presbyterian was paid $400,000 to agree to fly to San Francisco and be used as tackling dummies. Though Cal has been plagued by classroom budget cuts and tuition hikes, $400,000 was available to stage a football game. Located in Clinton, S.C., Presbyterian’s teams are known as the Blue Hose, referring to 19th century stockings, not to melancholy courtesans.

SC must be really expensive
Story from the Wash Post about Maryland casino officials courting wealthy Chinese to invest $500,000 and in returning getting a visa and possible permanent residence.
Another woman, 50, surnamed Wang, said her son is majoring in information technology in Shanghai, and wants to go to postgraduate school at the University of Southern California. Tuition would be a third cheaper if their son had a green card. "It’s a good deal for us to spend that amount of money and get three green cards," she said.
The hope is that the 500k investment pays some dividends too.
I have a friend whose younger sister (yes! in one child policy china, there’s still quite a few people who have siblings) is currently at SC (maybe she was interviewed on Fox Sports). My friend said that her family has basically sacrificed everything (no car, no purchase of an apartment) just so she could go to SC.
Yikes, that’s so much pressure. That can’t be healthy for the younger sister. And, tbh, maybe not good for the older sister either?
n.b. -- This comment does not constitute official chemistry advice.
The older sister seemed slightly bemused and slightly bitter. Apparently when she was of college age – the idea of going abroad wasn’t even thought of (nor could they afford 50k USD a year).
I didn’t have the heart to tell her about the typical US undergrad experience – even for elite schools.
I did make sure to tell her sister to go to In-n-Out so I’ve been doing my part to improve US China relations.

Oh, FFS, approve stem cell research already
It effing saves lives and has no effect on our deficit
Peyton Manning underwent a stem-cell procedure in Europe before having neck surgery recently, Fox’s Jay Glazer reported today.
The treatment is not used in the United States and Manning sought a number of consultations and therapies before undergoing anterior fusion surgery Sept. 8. Manning, 35, has had three procedures on his neck in 19 months, but the Colts continue to hope he’ll be available this season. He remains on the active list and reportedly made his first appearance at the Colts’ facility Friday and Saturday.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
is there a scientific reason NOT to approve stem cell research?
I don’t want this to get into a religious pissing match, but if that’s the primary roadblock…WTF YO?

I want to be very cautious.
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
I’m not sure if you intended it, but your comment can be completely turned on its head.
The objections many (eg. the Catholic Church) have with embryonic stem cell research is that the embryo is destroyed in the process. Since they believe life begins at conception, that means a life is being sacrificed for science.
Of note in this situation: Manning received a treatment of ADULT stem cells (made from his own fat cells). Adult stem cell research doesn’t carry the same ethical questions. Also, from what I’ve heard, adult stem cells have been much more successful than embryonic.
Since they believe life begins at conception, that means a life is being sacrificed for science.
how convenient for their argument, then!

A good deal for a decent quality SSD approaches but rarely goes below $1/GB. Higher-end SSD’s still will cost more than that, even on a good deal.
From what I’ve read, SSD’s don’t help thaaat much with gaming performance because loading video games isn’t a random access thing. That is, a chunk of game data often gets loaded in one big block, and regular disk drives can still do that pretty well. However, my personal experience has been that SSD’s have improved loading times for games as well as the standard boot-up time, software load times, etc.
Disclaimer: I am a terrible nerd (see above) so I could be wrong.
REHIRE NICK'S LEFT ELBOW!
Also (again, from what I gather), even a “decent quality” SSD is a significant improvement over a disk drive. The vertex 3 that Mr. Blooded linked to is a shmancy one. And that’s not on a hot deal either.
REHIRE NICK'S LEFT ELBOW!

In other words, Go Bears!
Bob Condotta is a Husky boy
And he asks JO questions and stuff
For our weekly look at UW’s opponent, we turn to Jonathan Okanes, who covers Cal for the Bay Area News Group. You can check out his blog here.
As always, it’s our questions and Okanes’ answers breaking down the Bears.
Q1: How has the offense changed with Zach Maynard now at quarterback, and is there a legitimate hope that he is finally the QB it seems like Cal has been searching for since Aaron Rodgers?
A: Cal is going with a lot more shotgun. Maynard (pictured at right in an AP photo) has the quickest feet of any quarterback Jeff Tedford has had at Cal, and possibly ever if you include his days as the offensive coordinator at Oregon and Fresno State. This has allowed Tedford to incorporate new elements into his offense not usually seen in his pro-style schemes. There are more designed runs from the quarterback and more plays designed to get Maynard out of the pocket and make plays either throwing in space or using his legs.
As far as giving Cal hope, Maynard certainly has displayed potential. He has made some nice throws and obviously his athleticism is a plus. But he still needs to work on his accuracy. One thing tha thas been very impressive about Maynard is his poise. He doesn’t seem to get rattled very easily. Even when Colorado had all the momentum in the second half a couple weeks ago, Maynard really seemed calm and made the plays he needed to lift Cal to an overtime win.

AndBedars, thank you for a great DBD today. I think that it was a great discussion and one that might be awesome going forwa.rd

I used to mock Twist for his punctuation, but after posting from an iPad, I get it now. It’s more difficult to type on than an iPhone.
little did you know that twist types his comments on a typewriter, then gives it to a cage of monkeys, who then enter the comments on the dbd by flinging poop at a huge keyboard projected onto the wall of the cage.

WE GOOOINNNNG TOOOO SIZZLERRRRRRR!!!
(Oddly enough, Sizzler is still functioning here in China – although we don’t have branches in Shanghai, there’s 2 or 3 in Beijing which are still busy. Also, even odder, one of the leaders of the 6/4 Tien’anmen Square movement in 1989 escaped to the US and eventually ended up managing a Sizzler for a while when he was in grad school. Wu’er Kaixi, or “Kevin”)
I hear the words that you are saying.
I, too, have experienced thirst.
[That is mildly trippy. All of the Sizzlers that I know have long since closed. My soph roommate and I sort of got kicked out of one. We had a bet on who could eat more of their “all you can eat shrimp.” We were still there when they started putting chairs on tables and cleaning up. The manager finally asked us to go, but gave us a big discount on our meal. Score!]
Old Toothwrangler
My roommates and I used to go to the one in El Cerrito and have STFU FATTY all you can eat shrimp and salad bar (and this salad bar had things like loaded potato skins and pasta) eating contests. Fully filled plates.
I think I once got to eight plates, lost and then we had to sit in the parking lot for 30 minutes because we were too full to drive back to Berkeley. oh, college.
Oh yeah, that was the place! I couldn’t remember if it was Albany or El Cerrito.
So many idiotic bets those early years. Hot chili-eating contests, all-you-can-eat shrimp, number of rice bowls, and lots of card games for frozen yogurts – usually hearts and big 2’s.
Old Toothwrangler
Such a classic line. We going to Sizzler!

So with everyone’s complaints about Sharepoint, yesterday I was all like “what the hell is Sharepoint?” then day 3 of work. All our internal stuff – sharepoint.
(so far, it works ok for me)

Oh, I figured he’d say something since he’s big on individual identity within couples and admonishes anyone who uses the word “we”.

Lets see if I can bait him out…
We like to travel to Cal games. We have been to 3 or 4 away games a year since we went to college. We enjoy sparkling wine and chocolate and we really enjoyed watching episodes DS9 on Netflix last night.
We feel Rishi can be a bit big-headed sometimes and we think the best tacos are in San Diego.
Cal: Bears with Books.
apples and oranges to compare the mission burrito to a surf and turf california burrito from lucha libre on your way to petco park. won’t say one’s better than the other but holy hell what a burrito.

Facebook is driven by a single, unique goal. Its priority isn’t to gain more users (it already has 750 million of those), nor does it feel compelled to find stupid ways to increase pageviews. Its primary goal right now isn’t to increase revenue, either — that will come later.
No, Facebook’s goal is to become the social layer that supports, powers and connects every single piece of the web, no matter who or what it is or where it lives. On Thursday at its f8 conference in San Francisco, the world’s largest social network will take a giant leap toward accomplishing that goal.
I have seen what Facebook is launching on Thursday, and it’s going to change the world of social media. And while I won’t talk about the mind-boggling things Facebook will be launching, I will say this: The Facebook you know and (don’t) love will be forever transformed. The news that will come out of Facebook during the next few weeks will be the biggest things to come out of the company since the launch of the Facebook Platform.

And that’s when they will sell all of your personal information off to marketers and sales databases, as all 750 million have agreed to this.

cool story bro
My dog has been acting out lately. Today while I was at work he grabbed a loaf of bread off the dining table and ate it. It was good bread too, from Acme.
I fear for the morning walk tomorrow.

away games
I would just like to say that I am befuddled by the dedication reflected in this thread. I went to precisely no away games as an undergrad, and I don’t think my current standard (will attend games within a 5 hour drive, for a total of three in the 19 years since I graduated) really amounts to much.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Nope.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Does that mean that you’ve also never been to Palo Alto or Stanf*rd?
Just checking.

"Winning is not everything. It is far better to play the game squarely and lose than to win at the sacrifice of an ideal."

I might have driven through on the way to somewhere else.
And before anyone gets all agitated, I think we can all agree that what this means is that Furd is at best a waypoint, and Berkeley is a destination.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Just tell me that you’ve never pogoed through Palo Alto, and that all your pogoing has been saved for Berkeley.

So I was in Singapore last week. And they’ve got all of these posters and banners up for the upcoming Night F1 race (which is this weekend? I think so)
But they’re doing a concert series along with the race. I believe (I think) Linkin Park is hte headliner . . . but also appearing Boy George Annnnnnnnd Rick Astley.
What about going to UCLA-USC games at he Rose Bowl?

No tickets freshman year, had a ticket junior year but “overslept” due to excessive beer consumption the night before and was left for dead. I woke up 45 minutes before kickoff and decided it wasn’t even worth trying to go, so I watched on tv and consumed more beer.

You have got this all turned around! I love to travel and use the away games as a pleasant excuse! See, I’d never been to Colorado, and had a friend in Denver from Cal, and its a lot more fun than staying at home, even with Toddler-bears coming along. Had a great time! Saw a great game! Didn’t miss the weekend (well, until mid-work week)
Cal: Bears with Books.
Technically speaking, every game is an away game for me now. A friend has a spare season ticket for a number of games and has been on my case to fly to LA for one, but I’m traveling more for work now and I don’t really want to add more time away to watch SC get beaten at the Coliseum.
