David Esquer Agrees To New 5 Year Contract; Mike Neu Hired As Pitching Coach
California head baseball coach David Esquer, who led the Golden Bears to their first appearance at the NCAA College World Series since 1992 this spring, has agreed to a new five-year contract to remain with the school.
"I couldn't be happier continuing to be the head baseball coach here at Cal," said Esquer, the 2011 National Coach of the Year. "This is great, not only for myself but for my family. We love it here. And I love the type of high-level student-athlete we attract at the University of California. I am looking forward to continuing the program's playoff success, and my goal is to get us back to the College World Series."
Hopefully, he will build off of the momentum of this past season and continue to grow Cal baseball for 5 or more great years! GO BEARS!
Ryan Gorcey tweets that Mike Neu (head coach at Diablo Valley College, former pitcher for the As and Marlins, CWS champ with Miami) has been hired as pitching coach.

I actually caught Mike Neu before. Nasting curveball. Would close out games for the ’canes w/ Hells Bells intro music.
Graduate of Vintage High School in Napa (’98?).
I’m going to give him Esquer a pass on this one and give him another shake. I do feel, however, that the administration should have attempted to pursue some very big names from some very big programs this offseason and I hope they tried that before re-upping with Esquer.

Very big names
Which very big names do you have in mind?
According to this article, five SEC baseball coaches make at least $500,000 a year. Six more make at least $225,000 a year. Does a baseball program that had to raise $9 million just to stave off execution by the university have enough money to pay that kind of money for a new coach?

Grrr
Nothing would please me more than to be proven wrong about how bad an idea I think this is.
Definition of a contract year performance, amplified by the effects of a team with a “one more season” mentality.
"I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels especially if they wind up in my octagon. Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words — imagine what I would have done with my fire breathing fists."
5 years is a long time, but it's nice to have the situation resolved.
And it’ll be nice to not have to hear conspiracy theories from the strongly pro-Esquer contingent for a little while.

Three different organizations selected Esquer as the national coach of the year. He acknowledged he recently received feelers from other schools.
“There was some interest,” he said, “but my interest was in making it work here.”
Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said Esquer’s five-year deal served two purposes.
“It makes a statement about our baseball program and its stability,” Barbour said, “and it makes a statement about Dave’s leadership.”
Said Esquer: “That’s what I was looking for, (for Cal) to make a definitive and loud statement that we’re going to ride with Dave Esquer for a while here, and he’s going to get us through to this next level where we can secure this program forever.”
Keeping January 2 open. You know, just in case.
