Cal Baseball vs. Baylor: Regional Final Gamethread
Cal Baseball has again been delayed by rain/lightning in Houston. The tarp has been removed and the field is being prepared. According to Baylor Baseball twitter, a new start time of 6:14 PST has been announced.

The team that refuses to die will try to make program history today. One more win and the Bears will advance to their first super-regional in Cal history, with a very real chance at their first College World Series appearance since 1992. Standing in their way will once again be the Baylor Bears.
Baylor has already announced that Jon Ringenberg will be starting today's game. Ringenberg has an ERA of just 2.25, but he's only thrown 28 innings this year and is essentially a long reliever. He frequently started Baylor's midweek games, and in my non-exhaustive search of Baylor gamelogs, never pitched beyond the 4th inning. Baylor will likely be approaching today's game as a bullpen game.
I haven't heard who Cal will send to start the game. Erik Johnson and Kevin Miller have both pitched, but neither threw full games by their usual standards and both could be available. Rubber-armed lefty Justin Jones will likely tell Coach Esquer that he's ready to go. Matt Flemer has 'only' thrown 3.1 innings and will likely take the mound at some point tonight. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, as is often the case in a regional final, it's all hands on deck. Go Bears!

That appears to be the case, as best I can tell from gametracker. Surprising, since we’ve had two straight games as the ‘home’ team. But I’ll take it!

Baylor is in fact the 2 seed to Cal’s 3. Cal was the road team for game 1 against Baylor, and again against Alcorn St., but was the ‘home’ team against Rice and yesterday’s game against Baylor. Makes me wonder if they just flipped a coin to decide for today.

In double elimination tournaments whoever won the “last game” is the home team on the 2nd day of head to head.

Good luck in the bear brawl! Keep the Pac-10 mojo going!

Evidently it"ll take an hour from when they start pulling the tarp off before the game starts.
I think Esquer, the umps and a grounds crew guy are on the field talking right now.

UCLA pitchers go 1, 3 in MLB draft:
SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Pittsburgh Pirates selected hard-throwing UCLA righty Gerrit Cole with the No. 1 pick in the baseball draft Monday.
Cole, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior, posted mediocre numbers this season for the Bruins (6-8, 3.31 ERA), but has what many consider to be the best pure stuff in the draft.
He was a first-round pick of the New York Yankees in 2008, but refused to listen to an offer and instead attended UCLA — as he insisted to teams he would.
Arizona, which had two of the first seven picks, selected Cole’s college teammate, right-hander Trevor Bauer, at No. 3. The Pac-10 pitcher of the year outshined Cole statistically, going 13-2 with a 1.27 ERA and a Division I-leading and Pac-10-record 203 strikeouts. He ended the season having thrown nine straight complete games.

The right hander has long been considered immature on the mound, letting his emotions get the better of him. And it’d be understandable for anyone to be excited after defeating their rival, and getting the last out against the batter Bauer has described as his biggest rival, Devon Rodriguez. The stage was: Rodriguez hitting a ground ball to the first basemen; he muffed it, but the ball bounced directly to the second basemen, who threw to Bauer for the final out. Bauer immediately turned around, and yelled at Rodriguez for around 2 seconds. The Bears didn’t like it, and the benches cleared for a little friendly dispute between the clubs.

Disney wanted the “Anaheim” name just as much as the city (Disneyland). I’m sure they could have gotten it out of the contract if they really wanted to.
Gene Autry moved to Anaheim from LA specifically because they game him freedom to call the team whatever he wanted (he originally wanted to move to Long Beach, but the insisted on the “Long Beach Angels”)

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have behind us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land, and air, with all our might and with all the strength that Oski can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be!
Go Bears!

Even though large tracts of Oklahoma and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the NCAA and all the odious apparatus of USC rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in Houston, we shall fight against Baylor, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend little republic of Berkely, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our University beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the Tony Randa, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

I'm so glad
I took a break from my work to watch the late innings.
Keeping January 1 open. You know, just in case.
That was one of the craziest ending to a game that I have watched
I feel a little bad for Baylor (especially their 2B who made that key error).
THAT IS SO AWESOME
ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING EVERYTHING THAT TEAM HAS BEEN THROUGH.
Wow.
I was pacing in front of my laptop that whole half inning mumbling, “The Bear will not quit. The Bear will not die.”
Awesome.

wow.. congrats other bears… still couldnt keep it together after being handed 9 walks and 5 errors… i’ll be cheering for y’all for the rest of the tourney.. good luck against DBU and great game. I send my bear spirit with you.

On the last play?
Rodriguez smashes a single to right center, Renda comes around 3rd to score the winning run but stumbles, but Baylor’s throw is off line and he slides in safe.
But the best part was that Danny Fry of KALX goes full Starkey-calling-the-play as soon as the ball comes off Devon’s bat, and he only gets louder and higher pitched as the play develops, then he goes bonkers when Renda slides in safe.

Bottom 9th
Bunting singled
Matthews hit what should have been 4-6-3 DP ball. Went through the 2B’s legs; Bunting to 3rd
Theofanopolous hit a grounder to third; Baylor got force out at 2nd, then threw home and got Bunting in a rundown. Amazingly, Bunting beat the rundown and scored to make it 8-6
Booker was HBP; runners on 1st and 2nd
Renda singled to right. Tanaka (who pinch ran for Theo) scored. Booker to 2nd. 8-7.
Krist walked. Bases loaded, still 8-7.
Semien, who had gone 4 for 4 before this, struck out to bring us to our final out.
Rodriguez got behind in the count 0-2. On a 1-2 pitch, he singled to right field. Booker and Renda score. Cal wins 9-8.

Moments before the finish
I remember trying to convince myself that it was “possible” we could win this game, but all the while it felt like only a miralce could allow this to happen. I swear my brain started to become superstitious. I felt the need to sit a specific way or not move my arm in certain way or I felt like because of me the bears would loose, it was crazy. My arms were trembling and I just didn’t want to move and jinx the game. When Renda came sliding home and I saw the team rush the field I could not believe it. What I would do for the instant replay haha! maybe not a good idea since I would have kept yelling. It was the most amazing baseball game I have ever seen. Whatever happens going foward with our team, I am proud of their great fighting spirit. These bears are Golden Bears!!!!!
Great story. I get so superstitious, too!

Congratulations, that was one hell of a finish. I quit paying attention to the score when it was 7-1, and checked again after the game. Was amazed they came back, and had to come check the thread here. I have to say, this is the most entertaining game thread I think I’ve ever seen.
Keep up the good work here, good luck next week and let’s see 5 Pac-10 teams in Omaha!
