USA vs. North Korea: Women's World Cup (Alex Morgan!) Gamethread
Time: 9:15 PDT
TV: ESPN
Cal's own Alex Morgan will likely start the game on the bench. Why, you ask? Because the world isn't ready to handle 90 full minutes of awesome, that's why. Only certain, special places (like Berkeley) can deal with players who score 14 goals in 12 games as a senior. So the US will introduce her slowly to an international audience in short, measured bursts until the world is ready for her full brilliance. And she's excited:
To be honest, I can hardly believe [this], but, I mean, I do," he said. "Three years ago, I would have never thought this was possible. This is what you dream of.

I can't find possession stats anywhere
but we keep giving the ball away.
According to Gamecast, at the 42nd minute mark, Team USA has had possession 56% of the time.

Just got Gamecast working again – look at the heat map, their fullbacks are playing really aggressively.
We're approaching Morgan time
Too bad ESPN3 is full of fail.

Guten Morgen, Bears
I think the 60th minute would be a good time to sub in Alex.

Fantastic goal
Cheney header back across the goal, from the 6-yard box, served very nicely from the wing.
still looking. can't get anything. *sigh*
I guess I actually have to do work today.

One of the things I"ve been noticing
the men’s players were complaining about the ball adidas introduced for the 2010 World Cup. It’s call Jabulani and it’s the ball they’re using now. It carries a lot more, and some of those strikes that flew well off target I’d attribute to the fact that they’re kind of playing with a balloon out there
Why?
California Golden Bears: 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at!

Wambach almost gets her own goal
It was her cross to Cheney that made the first, but her header into the ground (good coaching) bounced up off of the bar.
US taking control
DPRK is slowing down and can’t keep possession; the US keeps attacking on the left, where the DPRK’s right back is horribly outclassed.
Rachael Buhler, just slid in to knock a roller toward goal. The keeper couldn’t see it til it was too late

Great Job Alex !!!
Hey, it happened right after she went in the game……
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
Morgan with the shot
From the edge of the penalty box, but she’s leaning back and sails it. Go Bears.
"She was promised a Lexus for hitting targets"
Thank God that ended with “from her dad”, because recruiting violations started dancing in my head.

you listening to commentary? apparently if the goalie has even a hand on it (even if not full possession), it should technically be a foul. according to ian darke, at least
Deposed (and recently graduated!) #1 Indian
that’s the letter of the law. I’ve never heard that rule before at this level

Yeah I just heard that. I thought you had to have possession of the ball. Apparently not.

I’m gonna guess this is a women’s game only rule. maybe.
