Cal Baseball At UCLA: Sunday Gamethread

Yesterday the Bears got Bauer'd and there's no real shame in that. Dixon Anderson put in a solid start and Chad Bunting hit a solo shot, but two early UCLA runs (one unearned) were enough for probably the best collegiate pitcher in America.
The loss sets up a huge rubber match today. The Bears are still yet to win a series against a likely playoff participant in Pac-10 play, getting swept by Arizona St. and losing two of three to Arizona and Oregon St. A series win on the road would go a long way towards solidifying Cal as a 2 seed and hopefully help prevent getting sent cross country into the eastern time zone.
Justin Jones (7-4, 3.05) will be pitching for the series win just four days after earning the win against UC Davis on Wednesday. It won't get much easier for Cal's lineup, as they face Adam Plutko (5-3, 1.65), a potential candidate for freshman of the year. At least Plutko is unlikely to pitch all 9 innings like Bauer did yesterday. Either way, expect the winning team to score less than 5 runs again. That's just Pac-10 baseball this year. Go Bears!

Austin Booker gets HBP to lead off the game before Semien bunts him over.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
UCLA manufactures a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st
Hit, bunt, grounder advancing runner to 3rd, hit.

1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 2nd for UCLA. Jones has been just a little iffy to start the game.

But then he hits the next batter with a pitch to load the bases . . .

Phew!
Amaral strikes out to leave ’em loaded in the 2nd
Jones will have time to get in a groove, but if he doesn’t Kevin Miller will be available I’m sure.

Austin Booker walks with 1 out. Will Semien sacrifice again? I hope not, frankly.

Crud, leadoff double for UCLA’s Espy to start the bottom of the 3rd.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Espy gets to 3rd on a groundout, and it’s a clear strikeout situation for Jones now.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
2-1 UCLA
A single drives in Espy and things just aren’t going well for Jones today. Lots of hard contact.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
3-1 UCLA
Jones not pitching well and not getting any luck either. Things slipping away against a team that protects leads very well.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Interesting, Kyle Porter taking over for Jones in the 4th inning.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
But the results aren’t much better, as UCLA gets a leadoff double.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
4-1 UCLA
Espy singles and advances to 2nd on a late throw home

Louis Lechich hits a home run! 4-2 UCLA
I think that’s Lechich’s first collegiate home run!
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Still 4-2 in the top of the 8th
Porter, Miller and Flemer have kept things close, but Cal has done very little against Plutko. It’ll be Matthews, Booker and Semien due up in the 8th with Renda and Krist lurking – this is the inning to make some noise.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
5-2 now
A lead off triple and single scores another UCLA run
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Renda leads of the 9th with a single against UCLA’s closer, so that’s something.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Dare I hope?
Krist singles and now Cal has runners on the corners with no outs – and the tying run at the plate in Chad Bunting
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Bunting lines out right to the pitcher to a double play catching Krist off 1st. Another foot and it would’ve been a run scoring single.
