Cal Baseball At UCLA: Friday Gamethread
When: 6:00 pm PST
Audio Stream: KALX
Gametracker
Six more Pac-10 games left. All six against California rivals, all six against top 25, playoff caliber teams and all six with potential playoff and Pac-10 standing implications. It all starts today with a matchup of UCLA ace 1B Gerrit Cole (look out for Ace 1A tomorrow when Trevor Bauer takes the mound) against Cal ace Erik Johnson. A series sweep would vault Cal into at least 3rd place in the Pac-10, and a series win would put Cal just a game back of the Bruins. But that's a tall order against UCLA's elite pitching staff at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Go Bears!

This is perplexing – the game has started but KALX isn’t broadcasting it, though their schedule says they would. Frustrating.

On the other hand
Woo Cal has a 1-0 lead already! Walk, sac bunt, single!
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
1-0 after 1/2 an inning.
But Cole Ks Bunting and Rodriguez to escape. Cal will probably regret not scoring more that inning

1-2-3 in the first for Johnson, kinda
Krist nails a UCLA runner trying to steal after a hit.

Wow, I finish making and eating dinner
And come back to a game that’s still 1-0 in favor of the Bears in the bottom of the 6th.

Wow, he worked it full though. And Cole can’t want to walk him with Krist on deck.

have you heard anything in regards to Cal’s recruiting this year? Obviously we’re not going to land a lot of high quality guys because of the program getting cancelled, but have you heard about any commitments or news?
Adopted Giant: Ryan Verdugo. The next Javier Lopez.
goldenbearlair.com
I must confess that I have zero insight on baseball recruiting. It’s been, what, a month since they announced the program wouldn’t be cut? Considering that I’d be surprised if they have more than a commit or two.
It’s a good thing the team is relatively young, with just 3 seniors on the roster (although there are a few juniors that might declare for the draft).
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I haven’t been able to find any information either. Hopefully the move does not cripple our team moving forward- who knows what impact it could have on recruiting, but hopefully only this class takes a hit.
I’d imagine Cal can at least get a few decent commits-there’s a lot of talent in California, and I doubt all of it has been taken.

3-2 with 2 outs? I’m betting Johnson’s next pitch will be his last, one way or another.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Yes!
do you know what his pitch count is at?
Adopted Giant: Ryan Verdugo. The next Javier Lopez.
goldenbearlair.com
Announcers said he was right around 100 to start the inning.
So if you’re Esquer do you:
a) Send out Johnson in the 8th
b) Send out Porter
c) Have Flemer pitch 2 innings?
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Miller is also an option
Anderson is supposed to start tomorrow.
Adopted Giant: Ryan Verdugo. The next Javier Lopez.
goldenbearlair.com
Hmm, I hadn't heard that.
To me that sounds like Esquer is giving up against Bauer and going for the win on Sunday behind Jones. Weird.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Jones threw 50 pitches on Wednesday
sounds like he’s too tired to go tomorrow.
He also may figure that Anderson is more volatile with great stuff; either he can go with an ace performance that matches Bauer, or he pitches like crap like he has in Pac-10 play.

Out of all our players (other than maybe Johnson)
I want Krist to leave the least. Hopefully he sticks around for his senior year.
Adopted Giant: Ryan Verdugo. The next Javier Lopez.

I’m curious about Semien as well. He’ll probably be drafted reasonably high, but he hasn’t been hitting as well as he probably hoped and another year with more consistent results might help his draft stock.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
He's another one that could be gone
losing both (Semien and Krist) would probably be crippling to our offense. I think at least one will stay.
I was reading the SBN Draft blog, and it sounds like he would go after the 10th round. I think at that position he would come back to raise his stock.

HUGE win.
You don’t want to lose a game before Bauer goes tomorrow, and Cal really needs a series win against a clear playoff team like UCLA.
On a side note, I almost feel bad for Gerrit Cole (almost). ERA in the low 3s and his record is 5-7, as UCLA continues to not score runs for him.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
He shouldn’t have gone to ucla, then.

Plus, I hat Ucla athletics
So I’m incapable of feeling bad for anyone who plays on one of their teams.
Keeping January 1 open. You know, just in case.
WIN!
Five more Pac 10 wins please. ;)

women's tennis season over
After dropping the doubles point, Cal women’s tennis took 3 of 4 sets to go up 3-2. #6 single went down to the 3rd set where a late break gave Georgia the win, meaning that it came down to #1 single. At that point, Cal #1 Jana Juricova had a 4-1 lead in the deciding 3rd set. However, she was unable to win another set to ultimately drop the 3rd set and the entire match. Cal will lose senior Mari Andersson but retain most of its young team next year.
Go Bears!
