Cal's offense was still largely absent, but Erik Johnson was simply brilliant, allowing Cal to earn a 2-1 victory on Friday against Oregon. Johnson allowed a leadoff walk in to start the game that eventually scored on a sac fly. He was dominant the rest of the way, striking out eleven Ducks in his eight innings of work. But it would earn him just a no decision, because Cal's only offense for the first eight innings was a Mitch Delfino home run in the second. Oregon's Tyler Anderson matched Johnson inning after inning, and only when Anderson finally left the game was Cal able to mount the winning rally.
It took an unlikely hero to win the game. Michael Theofanopoulos has only 10 plate appearances this year, but he has certainly made the most of them. He doubled with one out and Mitch Delfino on second base to drive in the walk-off run. The hit raised the freshman's average to .444.
Today it's Justin Jones (5-3, 3.36) vs. Madison Boer (2-3, 2.12) as Cal tried to clinch a series win early. Go Bears!

The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Renda leads off the first with a single before Danny Oh strikes out after failing to sac bunt.

Crap
Andrew Mendenhall gets his first two RBIs of the year with his first home run of the year. 2-0 Ducks, and Cal has a deceptively large hill to climb with a slumping offense against a great Oregon starter in Boer.

4-0 Oregon
Ducks punish bad defense with a double to score 2 runs. Cal’s hitting isn’t good enough to overcome errors.

And Cal has since mounted a comeback. 4-3 after a Renda leadoff double in the 4th leads to a run, and a single-double-single rally gets 2 in the 6th inning.
Danny Oh has been instrumental in both rallies, which is nice to see after the bad error earlier in the game.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Jones goes 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th, getting Cal back up at the plate quickly. Just what you want to do during a comeback attempt!
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Jones is out there again for the 8th inning, but gives up a leadoff single and Matt Flemer starts warming up.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Flemer in, and he fights back from a 3-0 count (the first 2 balls were thrown by Jones) to record the first out.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
And that chases Boer from the game, so Oregon’s iffy bullpen will have to do the rest of the work.

Another single for Danny Oh! Redemption!
Chadd Krist up with 2 on and 1 out!
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Krist sends the tying run to 3rd and the lead run to 2nd.
It’s up to Rodriguez to get them home with 2 outs.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Rodriguez hits a liner, but it's right at the right fielder
Still 4-3 Ducks, as Cal is running out of outs.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Flemer goes 1-2-3 in the 9th
It’s up to Delfino, Semien, and Theofanopoulos in the bottom of the 9th
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
4-3 Oregon
Cal wasn’t able to finish the comeback, as Rodriguez’s lineout with the winning run at 2nd in the 8th inning the defining play of the game.

I WUZ THERE
I walked in just as the quackers hit the homer. Jones settled down nicely, and Flemer looked very good.
I’m surprised Krist threw a runner out, his throws to 2B between innings were pretty loopy and one went into CF. Maybe the guy got a bad jump.
