2011 NFL Draft, Day Two Open Thread
Last night we saw Cameron Jordan become the first Golden Bear chosen in the 2011 NFL Draft. While we had to endure an excruciating wait as he fell from a mid-round projection all the way to 24th, today we can only be pleasantly surprised. Shane Vereen, Chris Conte, and Mike Mohamed are the three remaining Bears with the highest odds of being drafted, but the consensus is that they will not be chosen until the 4th, 5th/6th, and 7th rounds, respectively. While we might not expect any Cal players to be drafted today, it's not inconceivable that we might be surprised in the next few hours (right Christian Ponder?). Green Bay could use a running back and they do have the second-to-last pick in the third round. Could they use it to draft Vereen before Harbaugh tries to take him in the 4th round? We'll find out soon enough.
Coverage kicks off at 3pm PDT on both ESPN and the NFL Network. Follow along in the comments below. Go Bears!

They don’t have a deep secondary, so it makes sense. Their starting corner back is back from injury, but I’m sure they don’t feel entirely safe yet. McCourty was a great pick last year who played some amazing football, now they’re going for depth.
They also have a total of 5 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, so they probably figure they can still grab a good pass rusher later on today.
Dalton to the Bengals! AERose must be sneering.

I was hoping for Kapernick to be around for the Raiders to pick up, but seeing that the Niners drafted him, I’m hoping my Raiders get a 2nd round steal in Vereen.
I thought Vereen was projected to be a 3rd/4th rounder?

Don’t sleep on Taiwan Jones. He was very solid in that game. And some Cal running backs are pretty high on him too.
And come on, he was playing for EWU. You were expecting 350+ yards?

I just question how a guy who built his career on FCS competition can grade higher than very productive RBs from BCS schools.
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Did King Tyce & Cam introduce themselves?
Wonder what the convo was like when they put Taiwan on the ground:
“Hi, I’m Tyson, future #1 draft pick”
“Hey Cam here, future #1 draft pick too”
#Dominate
IIRC, Jones was injured in that game
Left the game in the 1st half
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Just looked back at the play by play I found no evidence that Taiwan got hurt in that game.
His stats:
Rushing: 4 carries, 4 yards
Receiving: 2 catches, 11 yards
His big play was catching Mychal Kendricks from behind on a fumble return. Jones tackled Kendricks at the 5 yard line. Cal flubbed the next offensive series and settled for a FG.

I’m legitimately impressed by the Lions’ organization’s commitment to drafting the BPA. They’re not making the consensus need picks, but they’re loading up with talent.

The O-line issue is neither as good nor as bad as it’s made out to be. Pass protection is stable and workable, and it’s pretty clear that going forward Detroit is a pass-first offense. It’s not as good as the numbers suggest, but people assume the rash of quarterback injuries Detroit faced was due to poor protection, when in fact it was mostly just… shock and awe, bad luck.
Going forward, yes, they need to upgrade but Schwartz is banking on Scott Linehan being able to jerry-rig an offense with the short passing game and using the immense amount of speed on the offense which… well, Schwartz made a note to point out that the common thread between great offenses was a great QB, running back, tight end, wide receiver, but not left tackle.

Shane could start there next year! (right?)
Cal
by Thoroughbred on Apr 29, 2011 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions
He most likely will start. Danny Woodhead is a nice little running back that’s a great 3rd down back. Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis is another running back that works hard, but is more a back up than a pure starter. The Pats had to play around with those two and they desperately needed a starting running back. I was thinking Mark Ingram because he brings them that Corey Dillon type running game that put them in the Super Bowl, but their offense has evolved since then. Shane Vereen’s a work horse back that can not only run, but block and catch the ball out of the back field. Their offense is no longer a pure spread, nor is it power offense. They don’t need a bruiser because that’s not the type of offense they play. Vereen just seemed like the type of back that would fit their fluid/dynamic offensive scheme perfectly. You can’t put Ingram/LeShoure/etc. out wide with a movement like you can do with Vereen.
Elaborate pls?

Kevin Faulk has had a productive career in the NFL. There’s no shame in having Kevin Faulk’s career imo.
#Dominate
Kevin Faulk was a great back and had a very long career. Don’t think Shane would mind being a new Kevin Faulk.
Good $$$ too
From ProFootballTalk.Com – “Kevin Faulk will get $15.05 million over six years from the Patriots, including a $1.95 million signing bonus. His three-year take is $6.05 million.”
As listed on the NFLPA.Org site Kevin Faulk’s salaries are as follows: (2004 – $550,000; 2005 – $1,400,000; 2006 – $1,900,000; 2007 – $1,900,000; 2008 – $2,400,000; 2009 – $2,900,000) His workout bonuses are $55,600, $106,160, $106,160, $106,720, $106,720 and $106,720. For the seasons 2007 through 2009, Kevin Faulk has a $500,000 roster bonus. He also has $250,000 in incentives each season — NLTBE in 2004 and 2005, LTBE in 2006 through 2009. His cap numbers are $930,600, $1,831,160, $2,581,160, $3,081,720, $3,581,720 and $4,081,720.
April 6, 2005 update – It appears that Faulk redid his deal. For the longest time his 2005 salary was listed as $1,400,000. It is now listed as $540,000. It appears to me that the Pats converted $860,000 of his salary into a signing bonus saving $688,000 on this year’s cap but adding $172,000 to Faulk’s cap hits in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.
January 16, 2005 update – Mike Reiss reported in the Boston Globe that Kevin Faulk’s 2006 cap number is $2.5 million. I had it as $2.7 million so I am presuming that the $250,000 LTBE incentive is now NLTBE and therefore does not count against the cap.
August 30, 2008 update – Since Kevin Faulk was suspended for one game, his 2008 salary is now for 16 weeks or $2,258,816.December 21, 2009 update According to the USAToday salary database Faulk’s 2009 cap number is $4,254,280 which must mean that his $250,000 incentive is being classified as LTBE this season.
March 10, 2010 update The Boston Herald’s Ian Rappoport blogged that Faulks contract is “a one-year deal, which we knew, with the potential to earn $3 million. Faulk gets a signing bonus of $1 million, a salary of $1 million, and the chance to earn $1 million in incentives.”

thass cold man. End of the day Mallett is the only quarterback in this group that I’d draft to start on opening day. Even if all that’s been said about Mallett is true, he still has an advanced knowledge of reading the defense and the physical tools to take advantage, whereas right now Kap just has the tools and could just as easily end up scrambling into the loving arms of a linebacker who summarily slices him in half.
