Cal Tops Premier Rugby Table

After the first weekend's play in the nascent USA Rugby College Premier Division (CPD), California's Golden Bears have taken the No. 1 position in the Pacific Conference table.

On Saturday, Cal shut out the Aztecs of San Diego State University 95-0 in the kick-off to a seven-game conference schedule.

Nationally, 31 CPD teams are divided into four conferences: Pacific, West, Mid-South and Rugby East.  The two top-performing teams in each conference will move on, at season's end, to single-elimination title rounds, ultimately leading to the cornation of the national champion at Utah's Rio Tinto Stadium on May  21.

In rugby union, rankings are based upon points for wins, draws, multiplicity of tries and/or a narrow loss margin.

Going into Week 2 of the CPD season, the Pacific Conference standings are::

1 California

2 St Mary's

3 Central Washington

4 Cal Poly-SLO

5 Claremont

6 UCLA

7 UC-Davis

8 San Diego State

Next up for the Bears is a Mar 12 meeting with the Aggies of UC-Davis while Central Washington takes on Cal Poly and UCLA squares off against San Diego State.

The CWU-Cal Poly clash ought to be this week's barnburner of the Pacific Conference.
