The Eagles won't be taking home any hardware from Hong Kong this year.
After edging the Tongans 28-21 to make it to the bowl semifinals, the US team lost a 12-14 heartbreaker to Japan in the IRB Sevens World Series.
The Eagles commanded the first half of play with tries dotted down by Justin Boyd and Matt Hawkins. With Hawkins' try converted, the Yanks went into halftime with a 12-0 shutout.
Japan roared back in the second stanza, to notch two converted tries. The match ended with the Eagles knocking on the door of a go-ahead goal.
Former Cal back Colin Hawley sat out the match.
Japan now goes on to face Canada in the bowl final.
