FLASH: USA 7s On To Quarterfinals

The USA Eagles sevens side went 2-1 in pool play in Hong Kong, qualifying for a berth in the bowl championship against Tonga. The USA Eagles defeated Japan and China, but lost to England in the first round.

The Yankee rugby team includes 2010 Cal grad Colin Hawley, who now plays for San Francisco's Olympic Club.

Tonga comes out of pool play on bonus points with a shutout over Mexico, but two narrow losses to Scotland and Samoa. The USA and Tongan sides are fairly evenly matched in point production. Both squads touched down 12 times in Hong Kong but the Yanks converted six of its tries vs. Tonga's four.

The quarterfinal match kicks off at 7:50 p.m. Saturday (Pacific Time), too early to be shown live on Universal Sports' coverage which commences at 9 p.m. It's unknown at this time when the game tape will fit into the broadcast schedule.

The winner of the USA/Tonga contest will move on the bowl semifinal to meet the victor of the Scotland/Japan match, set to kick off at 11:47 p.m. Pacific Time. That match could be shown live.
