A legendary Cal signing day story
I also posted this on the DBD, but it seems appropriate to post here, too, as we get things going on LOI day.
LOIs were different back in the day…
Under most circumstances, the signed letter of intent binds an athlete to a college for at least one year. The penalty for switching schools is two years of lost eligibility, unless the original school signs a release. In that case, one year of eligibility is sacrificed.
Very few players manage to scramble out of a signed letter the way Ram quarterback Vince Ferragamo did when he was at Banning. Today, football letters are delivered in person by a college assistant coach. But when Ferragamo was a hotly recruited in 1972, the blank letters came in the mail.
Ferragamo signed a letter of intent from Stanford [sic] and dropped it in the mail. Later the same day he changed his mind. Ferragamo’s solution was to make an interception, probably the most important of his football career.
He and his brother Chris Ferragamo, who coaches at Banning, wound up begging the Wilmington postmaster for permission to retrieve the letter. That was against postal regulations, but the postman did allow Ferragamo to open the letter and scratch out his signature before returning it to the mail. Ferragamo subsequently signed a letter to attend Cal.

Daniel Lasco
Q: How tough was the decision to go to California?
A: “It was kind of tough just knowing that it’s far away from my family. But once I got out there and sat down with the coaches, I just knew it was the right place for me. The location’s wonderful, the coaching staff seems like they’re on my side, and they’re wanting me to become a better person and a better player. And going there, I know I will definitely pursue that goal.”

Kid made a big media deal about being recruited by several PAC 10 schools and picked Cal.
Problem was, NOONE RECRUITED HIM. From ANYWHERE.
California Golden Blogs! Excuse me. I have to go return some videotapes.
This kid calls a press conference at his school to announce where he’s signing. Amid pomp, circumstance, hype, and applause, he announces that he’s chosing Cal.
Only problem is…he didn’t actually have a Cal offer. The kid made the whole thing up.

Here’s a column about it from the time
A week ago, in front of television cameras and a packed high school gymnasium, the 6-5, 290-pound offensive guard placed two baseball caps on a table — a Cal Bears cap on his right, an Oregon Ducks cap on his left — and then, after a dramatic pause, put the blue-and-gold Cal hat on his head.
“They really won me over,” Hart told reporters. “Coach [Jeff] Tedford and I talked a lot, and the fact that the head coach did most of the recruiting of me kind of gave me the real personal experience.”
Actually, the Cal head coach barely knew he existed. That’s because there was no scholarship offer. Not from Cal. Not from Oregon. Not from anywhere. Hart made it up. He made everything up.
What began six months ago as a small, ego-driven lie, somehow gained weight and strength and grew into an uncontrollable hoax. It enveloped a school, a town, a family and maybe a future.
Chin strap-deep in his own confused dishonesty, Hart issued a statement Wednesday through the county school district saying that he fabricated it all.
“I wanted to play D-I ball more than anything,” he said in the statement. “When I realized that wasn’t going to happen, I made up what I wanted to be reality.”
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Then he changed his moniker to TwistNHook and has been claiming to be a moderator at CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com, a popular yet inane blog site dedicated to sports at the University of California.
True story, its there on the internetz in quotes.

You know what? I came into this subthread with a “hahaha let’s joke along with this” attitude. You don’t have to respond in kind, but I’m not getting into this with you. It’s a waste of our time and a burden on everyone else’s z key.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
It’s not the typing, it’s the spikes in blood pressure. I have to stay in for the long game and I can’t do that if I’m experiencing a cardiac event.
When I have some free time, I’ll write up a canned response so we can have arguments in which neither of us changes our minds, but more efficiently.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
fair enough
I find it amusing. You are so rigidly logical that the contrast with your blind spot for usc is amusing to me. I probably have blind spots too, though not about Cal since all Cal fans are used to experiencing the worst, often worse than we can imagine (see the end to the 2010 season).

You definitely have blind spots. So do I. Judge not, and all that jazz…
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Blind spots are a function of position as well. From your vantage point, I have a blind spot about SC: from the vantage point of some of my fellow alums, I am a surrender monkey for focusing more on the NCAA’s procedural shenanigans than the grand injustice of it all.
Besides, one of my few life rules is to never assume malice when incompetence is a more likely explanation…

Exactly. One thing Cal actually does really well (last two years excepted) is DEVELOP talent. See 33 active NFL players. Nowwwwww getting those guys to play together and take the TEAM to the next level that has been hit and miss.

Some things to consider:
They’re getting many east coast recruits who are a little overrated IMO
They’ve had some top 10 seasons under Bowden—albeit with monumental collapse
I do concede that we have a way better track record of putting guys in the NFL.
Samuels said. "That last-minute shot at halftime sums it up. Shooting off one leg? C'mon, man."
I don’t think they’ve even finished third in the ACC (they’ve never played in an ACC title game, have they?). Even Cal shared a Pac-10 title in 2006.

During Bowden’s tenure, the Tigers were bowl eligible every season but didn’t win any ACC championships (the 2004 team turned down a bowl invitation as punishment for a massive brawl during a game against the University of South Carolina). Despite this, Bowden has been criticized for his teams underachieving. The 2000 Tigers started 8–0 and rose as high as #5 in the polls before losing three of their last four. The same thing happened during the 2006 season following a 7–1 start and with the team on the verge of winning the ACC Atlantic Division. The Tigers have also shown great resolve at points during Bowden’s tenure. The 2003 team won four games at the end of the season to finish 9–4, which included victories over #3 Florida State and #7 Tennessee in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. The 2004 season saw the Tigers falter to a 1–4 start only to win five of their last six games (which included an overtime upset of #10 Miami), while the 2005 team overcame a 2–3 start to finish the season 9–4.
Yeah, they’ve recruited well, but have also underachieved. They’ve been overhyped and overrated to start a few seasons and have never finished strong.

California Golden Bears: 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at!
by atomsareenough on Feb 2, 2011 9:39 AM PST up reply actions
Well the reason I say that is that because the reps are going to be so limited with 5/6 QBs the coaches are going to have to make some selections really early. Unless they play above their level initially I don’t see the coaches not giving the other guys more reps earlier on. They need to know what they have and that’s hard to do if guys aren’t under center. I’m not saying Mansion and Sweeney won’t get reps, they just won’t get exclusive reps (Tedford is ordinarily pretty good about choosing three guys and getting them all the looks).
Say it like Ron Burgandy signing off: "Stay Classy, Bears!"

That may be an artifact of reps and the coaches only being able to see certain guys because they are the only ones throwing. IIRC Bridgeford had an injury(?) That limited his reps. With Maynard and Hinder in the mix it complicates the rep situation. They will establish a pecking order real quick because there is simply not enough snaps to go around. Given the wide-open nature Sweeney and Mansion will not have much wiggle room and Mansion’s disastrous season already has him down.

imagine one awesome CB, a monster NT, a good safety and one great LB. you’re already talking about limiting an opposing team’s offense in a lot of ways.
Didnt we have the #1 D in teh Pac10 this year? It could be argued our D was dominant this year!

not an excuse....
the offense was worse against oregon, and the def. never gave in. obvious difference at home and #1 team, but otherwise, i dont agree.
and against Stanford
as PlayClassy is pointing out below. Properly functioning pro style offenses ruined us.
I'm with CalBeer on this one
The defense was lights out very often, but pro-style teams managed to pick us apart. One thing that stuck out to me was our corners’ ball awareness (see Barkley tearing up our secondary) and out linebackers’ ability to contain the mid-field pass. I think we’re moving in the right direction, but there’s definitely room for improvement.
Dominant statistically does not mean dominant with wins. Granted our offense helped not a wit, but our D was misaligned against Nevada, lost against USC, schooled by Stanfurd (BLEGGGH), and just seemingly gaveup against OSU. Not to mention close losses to Zona and UW.

Not just D. But a truly “Dominant” (to use your words) Defense doesn’t allow a game winning score. Sorry, I have always said that Zona/UW stepped up and made the plays that mattered in that game. And I certainly do not question how awesome our D was in those games. but "dominant’ they were not. That is a word reserved for defenses like Cal’s and USC’s from 2004.

by PlayClassyBears on Feb 2, 2011 9:35 AM PST up reply actions
I’m sorry, but I completely disagree with the “game winning score” idea. If our offense scores another touchdown in either of those games, or the Oregon game, those scores suddenly become “meaningless” instead of “game winning”. A dominant defense allows few points. I’ll buy the argument that the blowouts against USC, Nevada, Stanfurd, and OSU argue against “dominant”, but the Arizona and UW games were completely, 100% on the offense.
California Golden Bears: 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at!
by atomsareenough on Feb 2, 2011 9:44 AM PST up reply actions
since the offense scored points, statistically it can’t 100% be on the offense. Because the defense could have allowed zero points.
Again I’m not saying the D was bad. They played awesome! I loved watching our D and our O totally screwed the pooch. But “dominant” means you win games on D alone. And that didn’t happen BECAUSE the D had the opportunity to to win the game for us (because we actually had a lead). This is NOT an indictment of the defense. They played as well as I could have hoped. But dominance implies that your D wins the game when they have the opportunity to. As an Offense would put together a game-winning drive to win it when it mattered so does a defense put together a game-winning stop.
We are not QUITE there yet.

I wasn’t speaking “statistically”. My point is simply that the offense HAS to be able to score more than 9 points, or 13 points at home against mediocre, eventual 7-6 teams if we want to win any games. I suppose it’s theoretically possible to win some football games 2-0 if we had world-beating defense and no offense, but realistically, if the defense is allowing 10 points, 15 points, 16 points, those are acceptable performances. The offense only scoring 9 points or 13 points is NOT acceptable.

LOL, Actually short of Tijuana and Cuidad Jimenez northern Mexico is actually quite lovely. And “Alta California” is indeed the current state of California taken by “force” with an army of like 600 soldiers or something ridiculous. US took advantage of political instability and great timing (happening before the gold rush). Pretty serendipitous.

do we have a recruit who’s most likely to ‘C-mart’ us?
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Interesting question. Factors I would look at:
-Guy who was committed elsewhere and decommitted
-Guy from outside of CA
-Guy from a locale with a strong hometown team (i.e. LA)
-Guy who has a recorded history of problems (team suspensions, etc)
Most of the guys we’ve recruited are high character guys and have always been high on Cal. I can’t think of anyone who clearly fits the bill.

I don’t think it’s a stupid question for a recruiter to ask. It is stupid for us to speculate because we don’t KNOW these kids…but I’m just pointing out broad factors that we would be privy to. But honestly the biggest factors I’m sure are the impression that are made in person with the coaches.

That’s because this kind of subject is most likely to only be rumor-centric. Cal doesn’t have that many poor teammates or coaches who would say something like, “Desean is the worst teammate ever.”
The best source on the matter has been Desean’s actions (which speak louder than words?) and there have certainly been plenty of those.

by Missing Barry on Feb 2, 2011 1:28 PM PST up reply actions
the catch is
the people who develop into awesome players, we see that on the field. To follow recruiting closely, you’re looking at all these prospects who are offered scholarships/might be interested in Cal…then that narrows down to players who have a lot of interest and an offer from cal…then that narrows down to players who “commit”…and then to players who actually sign their loi with cal…and then to players who actually enroll…and then to players who actually practice with the team…and then to players who play in games, and start, and star.
Logically, it seems more reasonable to simply watch the games (or, if you’re hardcore, watch/read about practices) than to learn about/get invested in these dozens-hundreds of prospects, when only a small fraction of them will end up making an impact at cal. Of course, like I said, most of us (myself included), pay at least some amount of attention to recruiting.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
This why I really like seeing kids commit who REALLY want to be at Cal. Nearly all will graduate and not go to the NFL, so I want them to develop into solid young adults who will have great careers after college and represent their school well, and look back fondly at their experiences at the university.
I really like seeing the NC contingent and Vei and Puka, guys who get along well and have a special bond, because there’s a lot more to the college experience than just gameday.

I don’t get it….I don’t see how this helps their appeal. Part of the ruling was their lack of regard for the authority and belief they are untouchable. Their arrogance on betting they will win the appeal might be the nail in the coffin.

FFS it’s not arrogance it’s basic math and risk management.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
DC, if they lose the appeal, won’t this put them in a world of hurt for the next two years? Like only being able to offer 10 schollies/year kind of pain, because there’s a reduction in the overall number of scholarships they can carry, or were they only limited on the number they could have in a single class?
They’re in a world of hurt no matter what. But the limitation is in the number they can offer on an annual basis for three years. That will translate over time into fewer than 85 scholarship players. The current limitation will be 15 scholarships per year for three years, assuming that the NCAA doesn’t change anything based on their appeal… which I suspect that they won’t.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Doesn’t the sanction also include a reduction for 3 years in the overall scholarship limit to 75 instead of 85?
If that’s the case, they’ll have around 5 available scholarships to give out next year before attrition.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
gotta catch'em _______ !
finish that line!
What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?
I think that about 9 of those go against the 2010 numbers, so their actual 2011 class is closer to about 20 or so.
Still just an insane number of commits.
I'm thinking of having a little party down in Newport.
I still don’t get how they can push off the scholarship limit with an appeal while simeultaneously accepting the bowl ban.
by Missing Barry on Feb 2, 2011 10:13 AM PST up reply actions
This is really incredibly simple. The limits don’t apply while an appeal is going on. USC is signing up recruits within the rules against the 2010 class (which was undersigned) and the 2011 class, which is conventionally sized. The AD hopes to get the scholarship deductions reduced, but if they don’t, then the 2012 – 2015 signing classes will be building on this year’s class. It’s going to be very ugly no matter what. The plan is to try and mitigate the ugliness by loading up this year.
Injuries and transfers remain a risk no matter what.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
And yet somehow the bowl ban does apply while an appeal is going on. Nobody else seems intrigued by this topic but me….
by Missing Barry on Feb 2, 2011 10:51 AM PST up reply actions
Apparently it’s possible to choose what you want to defer. The AD decided to take the bowl ban immediately, because the worst that could happen is that SC is banned in 2011 if the appeal doesn’t work.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Ted Miller is all over this and he agrees SC is doing the best within the constraints set by the NCAA. Kiffin is no fool
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?

A Freudian slip, also called parapraxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that is interpreted as occurring due to the interference of some unconscious (“dynamically repressed”) wish, conflict, or train of thought. The concept is thus part of classical psychoanalysis.
Slips of the tongue and the pen are the classic parapraxes, but psychoanalytic theory also embraces such phenomena as misreadings, mishearings, temporary forgettings, and the mislaying and losing of objects.
In general use, the term ‘Freudian slip’ has been debased to refer to any accidental verbal slips of the tongue.1. Thus many examples are found in explanations and dictionaries which do not strictly fit the psychoanalytic definition.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!

I might even wait until the end of the signing period to send in my LOI. Heck, I wasn’t even a prospect and that’s what I did when choosing my college. Interesting USC article
Normall max 80 scholarship football players for all D1 schools, and a max of 25 in any given year?
But USC was given a limitation to how many, which it is appealing and pushing off to the future?
I am actually glad they are pushing it off to the future b/c I think it just messes them up for the longer term. I suppose they are banking on this year’s class carrying them thru the lean years, and then restocking with freshmen starters once 2011 kids graduate (read: drop out).
Either way, the logjam is inevitable.
California Golden Blogs! Excuse me. I have to go return some videotapes.
I assume that by “beat the system,” what is meant is “followed NCAA regulations on recruiting during an appeal.”
There’s no scenario under which SC is not going to be desperately thin by 2015, which is when the reductions will end. It will take some time to recover.

NEWSBREAK: USC recruits afraid to compete
I have figured it out. The reason that USC has been able to convince recruits to sign is the lure of not having to compete. All these top recruits know that because of sanctions USC won’t have as many hot shot recruits in the coming years to take spots on the depth chart. The guys from this year will be virtually guaranteed of some playing role on the team and the competition for major contributor roles is much lower. Therefore, according to logic I have seen from other fanbases, USC recruits those players who are afraid to compete.
Note: Not talking about the how NCAA rules work on why they allowed to sign so many, just why so many players would want to sign.
Note 2: This is tongue in cheek. Everyone knows they’re going for the money and the free house.

DC, want to respond to this statement the same way you took on the last fourteen? haha
California Golden Blogs! Excuse me. I have to go return some videotapes.
SC is following the NCAA by-laws for recruiting during an appeal of sanctions. There’s no element of “laughing in their face” because SC is complying with their regulations. The scholarship reductions will still apply for three years, just from 2012 onwards. The only open question is whether it will be 10 scholarships or some lower number.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I guess I dont understand why they want to push the pain off. Let’s assume they lose the appeal, as you believe will occur. Wouldn’t it make sense to get the 3 years now, push through it and then deal with it all sooner? Or, I guess, they think they still have great recruits from the last few years and they want to try to stack their team up as much as possible before the pain hits.

Not if you’re worried that your depth can’t handle it right now. PLUS there is the bowl game issue. Having to recruit 10 guys a year with no bowl makes it harder to win guys over. They are spreading their punishment out to make less impact.

Now if I wanted to push DC’s buttons, I’d say something like this:
Culloden!Or maybe:
Flodden Field!Or possibly:
Mel Gibson!
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the Farm, after they've seen Berkeley?
In order of presentation:
Culloden: my clan was fighting on both sides there – the urban sophisticates versus the old-timey traditionalists. I think you can see some continuity there.
Flodden Field: another example of the Scots being let down by largely Norman aristocrats. It’s no coincidence that the post-Enlightenment period and the relative meritocracy of colonial administration were what let the Scots wreak havoc around the world spread their national wings.
Mel Gibson: further proof that Scotland isn’t quite as sectarian as you might think: they’re willing to overlook the fact that he’s a mad Catholic in exchange for the tourist revenue.

very medieval of you all.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
It will be 15 guys a year, tops. And the AD is less worried about bowls than scholarship limits. SC didn’t do brilliantly with bowls in the late 90s and first couple years of the 00’s, but there are always good players from southern California who will sign up – the quantities are _much_more important.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I guess with the forcing out of players and transferring of players buried on the depth chart 15 seems reasonable.
Say it like Ron Burgandy signing off: "Stay Classy, Bears!"
by PlayClassyBears on Feb 2, 2011 1:27 PM PST up reply actions
I guess I dont understand why they want to push the pain off.
A couple of reasons. First, SC for the last 9 – 10 years has typically undersigned their classes, to leave some leeway year to year. This meant that when the sanctions hit, they were under the limits anyway.
Second, one of the immediate, no-delay-possible provisos of the sanctions was that any player whose eligibility expired before the bowl ban was up could transfer to another FBS school without having to sit out a year. So there was a small stampede to the exits. That further exacerbated the shortage of players. Then…
they think they still have great recruits from the last few years
Actually they don’t, on the lines and defense. This resulted from a combination of injuries, transfers, bad recruiting in the latter Carroll years, and kids who weren’t able to get to the level that had been hoped. Put it another way, if you look at how dominant SC’s defense was in 2008 and how sieve – like it’s been since, you get some idea of the effects of attrition and limited development.
So, there’s been a huge emphasis on getting defensive players and line players NOW in the hopes that they can be coached up and remain somewhat intact as a unit over the next several years.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I just can’t stand the fact that SC is still whipping us on the recruiting trail when they are being sanctioned by the NCAA. I really thought this was the year where we out recruited the douches from down south. But whatever, this is going to make it even sweeter we when we beat the dog piss out of them these next couple years.
On a side note, I pretty sure I’m not the only one who thinks this but C.J. Anderson definitely has to be the sleeper of this class. Kid is filthy. Our backfield is going to be stacked with him, Lasco, and Bigelow. DAMN!!!
