Why coach M came back to Berkeley
Michalczik originally left Cal to become the offensive coordinator at Washington. But less than two months later, good friend Tom Cable had the interim tag removed as head coach of the Raiders and hired Michalczik as his offensive line coach. Michalczik was let go when Cable was not brought back after the 2010 season.
Michalczik said he received some inquiries about NFL jobs but didn't entertain any other offers once he found out he could return to Cal.
"I got some calls, but once I had the opportunity to come back here, I didn't look at anything else," he said. "Things kind of fell into place. I really believe in Cal football. I believe in Coach Tedford. I believe in the way things are done here."

If the Giants make the 2011 postseason, Cal may have to find an alternative venue for two home games. The Oct. 13 game against USC could conflict with the National League Championship Series, and the Oct. 22 contest against Utah could be at the same time as the World Series. Cal is playing its home games at AT&T Park this season while Memorial Stadium is being renovated. No contingency plans have been finalized yet, but Cal likely would play those games at either the Oakland Coliseum or Candlestick Park. The Bears open the season with a neutral site game against Fresno State at Candlestick Park.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

rec'd!
Nice to see more Cal/Dodgers fans here at CGB :)
We’ve got a smallish but nonetheless vocal contingent over here.

It’s not my fault you Norcal folks are so obviously and terribly misguided. When Twist is one of the few people that knows what’s up (at least root for the A’s, but definitely not the Giants), you know things are in a sad state.

I was looking, and for some reason it doesn’t look like they’re selling the Dodgers equivalent of this. Hmm.

How many SF Giants equivalents do you have for these?
Just the one?

/clicks subject line, mutters about living in the present
Not actually trying to go down that road, though, as I’ve seen what kind of conversation it usually turns into. Not pretty.

Yeah, I certainly don’t want to get into a Norcal/SoCal thing, that’s for sure. Fortunately we’ve kept the Dodgers vs. Giants banter pretty light and good-natured so far around here. Hopefully we can keep it that way :)

I just know how some of the Giants vs. A’s conversations have gone down, so I’m trying to tread lightly to avoid that. Your post certainly looked like a step down that road. ;)

Oddly enough, I think Dodgers vs. Giants is far less fraught than A’s vs. Giants. I think that’s because there’s absolutely 100% no chance for a “split loyalty” contingent. Whereas, unless they somehow happened to meet in the World Series again, I feel absolutely no conflict in rooting for the Dodgers and A’s against the Giants and the stupid Angels.

It wasn't always this way
As a kid living in Berkeley in the 70s, I was both a Giants and an A’s fan. I was also a 49ers and Raiders fan. Come to think of it, I rooted for Stanf*rd in their two Rose Bowl appearances in the 70s. Didn’t stop me from wanting Cal to stomp them in the Big Game, though.

sad to say as a fair-weather giants fan, but i don’t think this will be a problem at all, especially the NLCS and World Series. at least we got one!

The pitching is still there, but don’t you think there are legitimate concerns about run production? Some guys that contributed a lot last year had years that I’m not sure are repeatable. On the other hand, if Sandoval rebounds a bit that would help you guys hugely, no pun intended :)

I think the West is wide open like it usually is, with a few teams that could potentially win it. I think the Giants are probably the favorite of the contenders. That said, I actually have not followed baseball even a little bit since the Parade (you know, the one we had for winning the World Series!)….
by Missing Barry on Feb 13, 2011 12:11 PM PST up reply actions
…Parade? Yeah, I didn’t pay any attention to that.
Anyway, like I said in my post down below, I’m not sure you guys can replicate the voodoo you had working in your favor last year. I think Belt will help and Sandoval will have a better year, but I’m really skeptical that Torres, Burrell, and Huff (and maybe even Posey to some extent) will have nearly as good a year this year as they did last year. Replacing Uribe with 37-year-old Miguel Tejada isn’t going to help much either.

I think the Giants did that last year.
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Have concerns? Sure. But you guys were fortunate enough to have journeyman Andres Torres have a phenomenal year out of NOWHERE, have journeyman Cody Ross swing an insanely hot bat at EXACTLY the right time, have journeyman Aubrey Huff suddenly have a 5.9 WAR season at age 33 after never having had a season above 4.0 WAR, and having had a below-replacement season last year, have potentially washed up Pat Burrell make some clutch hit after clutch hit late in the year, etc, etc… My point is, all that stuff clicked for the Giants and brought them a World Series title last year, but is it repeatable? Can they depend on that kind of magic in 2011? That seems doubtful to me.
So, yeah, Sandoval might bounce back, Posey should still be solid (though his true talent level may be somewhere slightly closer to his ~.800 post-All-Star Break OPS than his ~.960 pre-All-Star Break OPS), and maybe Brandon Belt will be an immediate contributor, but there are a lot of question-marks and a lot of guys seemingly due for regression.

Full year or Posey. Full year of Bumgarner. Bounceback year for Pablo. Hooray Giants!
In more seriousness, everything you’re talking about applies to the defending World Series champion every year. A lot has to go right for any team to win the World Series. No team is ever the favorite over the field. But hey, if that’s what comes with being World Series Champions, I’ll take it! :)
by Missing Barry on Feb 13, 2011 3:56 PM PST up reply actions
Well, I half agree with that, half not. I agree that a lot of breaks have to fall a team’s way in general for them to win a WS title, but some teams require more breaks and some require fewer. It’s why the Yankees don’t win it every single year, but they still win (or at least reach the WS) more often than anyone else. So, I wouldn’t say that “no team is ever the favorite”. Giants have a lot of strengths, especially the their pitching, which is very important, but I’d say that this year Philadelphia has to be the preseason NL favorite, with the Braves, Reds, Cardinals, Giants, and maybe even the Brewers on the next rung.

Lots of concerns. Lots. Oodles.
But if the Giants could win it last year, anything is possible.

Better for me
1. Giants make playoffs
2. Cal has to play at Oakland Coliseum
3. We rent the Black Hole fans to intimidate the other team
4. ???
5. Profit!
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Coliseum might be available if there's no NFL season. heh
Though I’d like the A’s to be in the playoffs.

Three comments about coach M and the rest are just people bickering about Giants vs Dodgers. Go figure.

Why talk about football when you can get into a dumb rivalry slapfight?
I always felt Coach M was a Cal guy, and his departure to UDub seemed to only come from his desire to call plays. His subsequent decision to stay with the Raiders seemed to indicate he never wanted to leave the Bay. This bodes well for his future at Cal, particularly if the offense performs well in future seasons.
It should be noted that two coaches (Kiesau and Coach M) are returning only a few years after departing Cal, which probably means they have very positive relations with Tedford and appreciated the time they had here. Here’s to hoping they rework the old magic.

Hey now, it was a pissing contest, not a slapfight. And it was remarkably good-natured :)
Anyway, I’m all for happy, motivated coaches who want to be here. I was very much unimpressed by Marshall, so I’m really hoping Michalczik can work his magic again for us quickly.
