Bowl Projections: Cal To The Holiday, To Face Texas, Iowa State Or Missouri
With Furd heading to the Fiesta and UW going to the Alamo, that means Cal is in line for their third trip to the Holiday Bowl in eight years. The question is who will they face?
Right now it seems to all depend on which Big 12 teams go where in the earlier polls. The Holiday Bowl has the fifth selection of all the Big 12 bowls. If both Oklahoma State and Kansas State make it to the BCS (which is possible if TCU doesn't make it into the top 16), then the Cotton Bowl (second selection behind the Fiesta) would take either Baylor or Oklahoma. The Alamo would take the other team. The Insight Bowl would then be left with a choice of the Texas Longhorns, the Missouri Tigers, the Iowa St. Cyclones or the Texas A&M Aggies. It'd be a no-brainer for the Insight to pick up the Longhorns, leaving us with probably a choice of the remaining three teams. I'd guess Missouri or Iowa State are the likeliest opponents considering the way A&M stumbled and bumbled to the finish.
If TCU takes Kansas State's spot in the BCS? Then everyone drops a spot, and Cal likely gets their dream rematch with Texas.
Here's what everyone is projecting:
- Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated projects Cal to face Iowa State because K-State makes the BCS.
- Jerry Palm of CBS Sports projects Cal to face Missouri because K-State makes the BCS.
- Jason Kirk of SB Nation has Cal facing Missouri if K-State makes the BCS, and Cal facing Texas if they don't.
- Brad Edwards and Mark Schlabach of ESPN project Cal to face Texas because K-State misses the BCS in their projections.

If Holiday Bowl officials must choose between Mizzou, A+M, or Iowa State
they’ll choose Mizzou because they have better conference and overall records (and the Tigers beat both teams). I’m not sure anyone actually wants A+M or Iowa State after their dismal performances in conference games.

I wouldn’t make much of the SI projection. He has Iowa State as Big 12 # 5 and Missouri as #7 even though Mizzou has one more overall win and two more conference wins.
I found that strange too. I thought Mizzou travelled pretty well.

What "rematch" with Texas??
Are you referring to our long-held grudge with Mack Brown and his BCS lobbying efforts from 2004?? Not really a “rematch,” but I get it…
Go BEARS!!
More of a grudge match than a re-match.

With Houston losing yesterday and VA Tech getting upset too, I don’t see how K-State doesn’t make. BCS game. I think it’s gonna be Missouri. Oh well, would’ve been fun to get a shot at Mack Brown this post-season, but I guess we’ll have to wait.
If TCU makes it and OSU misses the NCG, I don’t see enough spots for K-State

Brent Schrotenboer of the San Diego UT reports it’s Cal vs. Texas:
San Diego’s other bowl game, the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, will be a matchup between a pair of 7-5 teams, Cal and Texas. It will be the third appearance for the Bears (2004, 2006) and the fifth for Texas (2000, 2001, 2003, 2007). Both teams have split their previous games here.
