Cal's 30 point victory over Cal State Bakersfield puts them in the final of the 'Doubletree by Hilton Berkeley Marina Cal Classic against UNLV, who defeated Prairie View A&M, 73-60. The Rebels sport a record of 6-1, but they only have one win against a team with a winning record and lost their only game against a ranked team by 19 points.
UNLV has a balanced offense led by junior guard Kelli Thompson and senior forward Lenita Sanford. But UNLV's strength is in their four posts - Sanford, Jamie Smith, Sandrine Nzeukou and Markiell Styles. The foursome collectively average more than 30 rebounds per game and offer perhaps the toughest test for Cal's inside foursome of Brandon, Caldwell, Gray and Hartman. These are two teams that want to dominate the paint, and whichever team wins that battle will almost certainly be the team that wins.

The numbers actually give UNLV a slight advantage. BUT - it's important to remember that these numbers aren't strength-of-schedule adjusted. As of right now Cal's strength of schedule is 31st best in the nation, while UNLV's is 265th, which is why Cal should be a decent favorite today.
Interestingly, the statistical profiles are very similar. UNLV tries to dominate the boards, and they have a problem with turnovers. Cal's offense is a little better, UNLV's defense is a little better.

Bears lead 27-14 with 8:10 to go in the first half. Dave Lewis said “Brittany Boyd is putting on a clinic on how to play point guard.” So true!

Bears win! 70-48
Although UNLV is a pretty good team (7-1 coming into this game), they were never in the game. Cal scored the first 7 points, and never looked back. Cal played about as perfect a first half of basketball as it is possible to play. Boyd (7 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists) and Gray (23 points in 17 minutes), in particular, were outstanding. The Bears came out a little flat in the second half (they had a 20 point lead). But then they pulled it together and had a lead as big as 27 points, before putting in the subs. Overall, an outstanding effort by Cal. Go Bears!
