Bowl Games Open Thread: So Many Bowl Games, So Little Time!

Could we see 6-8 out of UCLA this season???

Lot of games today. Let's get right into it.

First, is the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Are you taking care of your car??? Northwestern and TAMU are:

Kickoff: 12:00 pm EST Sat Dec 31, 2011

It’s been a disappointing year for Texas A&M, but its first bowl win in a decade would be a nice lift heading into a new conference with a new coach.

For Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald, this will be his fourth attempt at leading the program to its first bowl win since 1949.

Playing for the final time as a member of the Big 12 before joining the SEC, the Aggies will face the Wildcats in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 31 in Houston.

Next up, the Sun Bowl. This matches GaTech and Utah, our Pac-12 brethren:

Kickoff: 2:00 pm EST Sat Dec 31, 2011

Georgia Tech’s string of 15 consecutive bowl appearances is tied for the fourth-longest active run among FBS programs.

While that streak is certainly of note, it’s another one that’s surely left a bad taste in the mouths of the Yellow Jackets.

Trying to avoid a seventh consecutive postseason loss, Georgia Tech faces Utah in the Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve in El Paso, Texas

Then, we have the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl straight out of AT & T! It is UCLA and Illinois:

Kickoff: 3:30 pm EST Sat Dec 31, 2011

UCLA is the first team in a decade to earn a trip to a bowl with a losing record.

Illinois is the first FBS team in history to close the regular season with six straight losses after opening with six consecutive wins.

Therefore, it’s not surprising neither Rick Neuheisel nor Ron Zook will be around for the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

In a matchup of two teams that have fired their coaches, the Bruins and Fighting Illini will meet New Year’s Eve in San Francisco with hopes that a bowl win can help diminish some of the frustration of painful seasons.

Then, we have the Liberty Bowl, which matches up Cincinnati and Vanderbilt:

Kickoff: 3:30 pm EST Sat Dec 31, 2011

Zach Collaros was on the sidelines earlier this month when Cincinnati finished as co-Big East champions. However, after recovering quicker than expected from a broken ankle, he’s hoping to be ready as the Bearcats try for their first bowl victory in four years.

Cincinnati will take on Vanderbilt at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis on Dec. 31.

After going 4-8 in 2010, the Bearcats turned things around, going 9-3 in coach Butch Jones’ second season.

Claiming a share of the Big East title may have seemed out of reach when Collaros broke his right ankle in a 24-21 loss to West Virginia on Nov. 12. The Bearcats lost their next game as well, but rebounded with two wins to close the regular season with sophomore Munchie Legaux under center.

And finally, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl! Let's go eat some chicken and enjoy this bowl game, which is Virginia v. Auburn:

Kickoff: 7:30 pm EST Sat Dec 31, 2011

A year ago, Auburn won the national title by completing an unbeaten season. Virginia was licking its wounds from another losing campaign.

The upstart Cavaliers may be enjoying the more accomplished season this time.

Virginia goes for its first postseason win in six years when it faces the Tigers in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 31.

Auburn (7-5) won its second national championship last season, beating Oregon in the BCS title game - its fourth consecutive bowl victory - to cap a 14-0 season.

Lot of action here! Leave all your thoughts in the comments. GO BEARS!
