With the conclusion of the Cal Football season (sigh) comes the crescendo to the football recruiting season (neat!). A little over a month till National Signing Day! As we emerge from the Dead Period, there's a few noteworthy developments as well as some potentially fun times ahead for Cal fans as the three main High School All-Star games kick off over the next week. Lots of current Cal commits and a bunch of Cal targets will be on display, with some commitments scheduled. here's a handy post from Bear Insider that provides info on the games and the Cal recruits who will be participating.
Below is a quick update on some developments with a few of Cal's primary recruting targets. We'll also take a quick look at the Cal commits and targets participating in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl next Tuesday, January 3. And yeah, we'll also have a gamethread up for it when the time comes.
Gentle and kindly reminder, you can always refer to the CGB Recruiting Board for measurables, rankings and highlights. It's up to date!
First the good news....
Steven Moore, OL Elk Grove (Elk Grove, CA). Committed to Cal last week. YAY! After the Holiday Bowl, I think its safe to say that we could use some big, nasty linemen. Moore is just that. A great addition to the class. Versatile, mobile, HOSTILE! This guy is a Coach M special, and that's good enough for me. Welcome to Cal, Steven!
Now the first bit of bad news....
Ishmael Adams, CB Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, CA). Committed to UCLA. BOO! This always looked like a Cal-UCLA battle, but I certainly thought the good guys would prevail in the end. We may still, but Adams announced his commitment and his intentions to begin recruiting for the Bruins in an effort to bolster their class. That doesn't sound like a guy whose still unsure of his decision. Bummer. Adams is a guy that could compete for playing time immediately next year, with the departure of Marc Anthony and the ongoing recovery of Stefan McClure.
MORE BAD NEWS!
Taylor McNamara TE, Westview (San Diego, CA). First, he narrowed his final schools to two...Oklahoma and Colorado ($). WUT?! Then he committed to Oklahoma on Wednesday night. At least he won't be in the Pac-12. Oklahoma sold McNamara on early playing time and he likes the way they plan to use him. Their winning tradition also played a big factor. Hard to argue with either of those points. But, you know, Norman and all. Oh well.
KeiVarae Russell, RB Mariner (Everett, WA). Committed to Notre Dame over Washington yesterday. We were already out of it, so...whatever. We can haz DJ Foster?
Christo Kourtzidis, TE Lutheran (Orange, CA). Down to Cal and Florida State, and will make a final decision after his offical visit to Tallahassee the weekend of January 13 ($). Sounds like Christo is high on Cal. If he flips from FSU, we'll be his school of choice. The commitment of Mcnamara to OU makes landing CK that much more important. I'll also add that his toughness and blocking ability would be welcomed. Stay tuned and we'll see what happens.
David Keller, OL San Joaquin Memorial (Fresno, CA). Decommitted from Fresno State, looking at Cal and Oregon State ($). Cal has yet to offer, but could do so next month. Keller has a nice frame and could play guard or tackle. As I noted above with Moore, we could use a lot of big bodies for the OL. Keller could be a good one. His teammate, running back Chris Brown, has already committed to the Beavers. We'll see how this plays out as well.
CJ Dozier, LB Chaparral (Temecula, CA). Decommitted from Arizona State, offered by Cal ($). Dozier is a good athlete with nice range and a frame to add some good muscle. Per the above link, he's planning to take visits in January and then decide around Signing Day. Look for Washington and Nebraska to provide some competition for him, though it sounds like niether school has offered him just yet.
SEMPER FIDELIS ALL-AMERICAN BOWL, Phoenix AZ
This game will be on CBS Sports Network next Tuesday at 3pm PST. Here's a quick rundown of the guys to keep an eye on:
Cal Commits to watch:
Michael Barton, LB De La Salle (Concord, CA)- named East Bay Defensive Player of the Year. Here's an awesome article on the man himself. He could be the next Mychal Kendricks. Sweet.
Zach Hoffpauir, S Centennial (Peoria, AZ)- The now two-time All-Arizona Safety is going to take an official visit to Arizona State. He says he's still solid to Cal, but wants to see what new Sun Devil coach Todd Graham and his staff have to say.
Hardy Nickerson Jr, LB Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, CA)- Named to the All East-Bay First-Team by the Bay Area News Group. That's pretty good for a two-star recruit! Kiss my ass, Scout.
Freddie Tagaloa, OT Salesian (Richmond, CA)- Also named First-Team, All East-Bay by BANG. He's been playing hoops for Salesian, which has continued to help his footwork. Still one of the most underrated recruits in my mind. This guy will be unbelievable.
Bryce Treggs, WR St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA)- The Prince of Swag has continued to recruit for Cal, but is planning an offical visit to UCLA for mid-January ($). Nothing to worry about here. Treggs also caught a nice touchdown in the Cal-State All-Star Game last Friday. The North defeated the South, in case you were wondering. NORCAL ROOLZ!
Cal Targets to watch:
Matt Cochran, C Buhach Colony (Atwater, CA)- The big fella is expected to announce his decision at the game. He will be picking between Cal, Tennessee, and Washington. Like our chances here. Cochran would a huge get. Another underrated guy who was just mauling people in the Cal-State Game.
DJ Foster, RB Saguaro (Scottsdale, AZ)- Cal looks to be in the driver's seat with the top playmaker in the West. Foster still has a visit planned to USC for mid-January, but a decision could come before that. Stay tuned. This guy is fun to watch.
Deforest Buckner, DE Punahou (Honolulu, HI)- Will commit at the game, choosing between Cal, Oregon, and UCLA ($). Buckner is going to Oregon, and we're after some bigger fish. Good luck to him.
Jaydon Mickens, WR Dorsey (Los Angeles, CA)- The SC de-commit will trip to Pullman and check out Pirate Leach's new digs in mid-January. He likely will not visit Cal at this juncture. I think he could end up at Washington personally.
There you have it. Thoughts? Feelings?
