Newest Cal Football Commit- Elk Grove OT Steven Moore

Good news arrived Wednesday night as Cal secured a verbal commitment from big offensive tackle Steven Moore out of Elk Grove, CA. The Golden Bears beat out Boise State and UCLA for the services of the one-time Arizona commit. Even though Cal got in late on Steven's recruitment, we were able to make up a lot of ground thanks to him having a great visit in Berkeley last weekend, and also the recruiting efforts of OL Coach Jim Michalczik. Yeah, he recruited Moore!

Steven is the third offensive lineman (and the third offensive tackle), to commit to the 2012 Cal class, joining Salesian's Freddie Tagaloa and Westbury's (TX) Christian Okafor. Holy beef, Batman!

After the jump, we'll take a look at Steven's measurables and rankings courtesy of a few recruiting services, some quotes from Bear Insider's commitment story and throw in a highlight clip. Welcome to Cal, big fella!

THE MOORE FILE -

Elk Grove HS (Elk Grove, CA)

Height/Weight: 6'7, 265 lbs

Position: offensive tackle/offensive guard

Rankings by service:

Rivals: 5.5 (3 star)

ESPN: 75 (3 star)

24/7: 77 (2 star)

Scout: 3 star (#54 OT)

Know why rankings don't always matter? Because Moore is good. Really good, despite what the above may indicate. His Elk Grove team went undefeated until they lost to a very good Folsom team in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 Semifinals. He was named the Delta Valley Conference's Lineman of the Year. That's the same league as Grant. Want leadership and class? Well Moore was awarded Elk Grove's Joe Nurre Award, which is the team's acknowledgment of its Most Inspirational Player (Joe Nurre was an Elk Grove football player who was killed in Iraq while serving in the US Army). Not to mention, if Coach M identified Moore as a guy he really wanted....well, the dude has some serious cred when it comes to lineman evaluation. Make no mistake, Moore is a great person and a great player.

Here's a few quotes from Jim McGill of Bear Insider's writeup on Steven's commitment:

"I gave Cal a call tonight and committed to Cal,' said Moore. "It's definitely exciting.

"Cal's so close to home and has such great facilities and you just can't beat having a Cal degree.

"My whole family's from the Bay Area and my great grandpa has a home in Berkeley so there's a real comfort there.

"I gave Coach Michalczik a call and let him know I'll be a Bear and he said I just made his day. Coach Tedford was really happy, too."

You can find the full article here...for free! I did like this quote though. Big kudos to Coach M:

"I got watch their practice on Saturday. It was cool to be able to see how Coach Michalczik coaches the guys. He's direct but not mean about it. He's a cool guy. He's more relaxed and not all hyper out there. He's been my main recruiter for Cal."

Bear Territory also has a free article on Moore's commitment. Give that a read too, because if you're at work today...it's probably slow and you're bored.

And a good cure for boredom would be a nice highlight video of our newest commit. Have a look!

Welcome to Cal Steven!
