Richard Solomon Suspended Indefinitely, Will Not Play Against San Diego State
This is disappointing in about a billion different ways.
This doesn't really sound good at all.
I hope the issue is resolved soon. Solomon is Cal's only athletic big. Even if he struggled early this year and clearly needs a lot more work to become a refined post player, he was clearly better defensively and made it harder for most teams to score inside. His development is crucial to the success of this year's team. Losing him for an extended period of time will greatly limit the upside of this team.
His absence means that we have David Kravish moving to the four and Harper Kamp starting at center, with Bak Bak and Robert Thurman coming off the bench. We can get by with this against most teams on our schedule, but beating athletic squads like San Diego State and UNLV just became a lot harder.
And of course we play the Aztecs next. Such is the way of a Cal fan.

guessing games…
how long ?
wtf did he do?
I doubt we'll ever know
AD is tight-lipped about this as they should be.
When they feel he’s served his punishment and has made amends, they’ll lift it.

When PatChris and Randle pretended to rob some people, what was their punishment?

There were also allegations he shot Greedo...
…but newly-released evidence indicates that Greedo shot first.

ARRRRRGH
C’mon, Solo! WTF.
I don’t like the sound of this. At. all.
IIRC, the last “indefinite suspensions” were who, Amoke and Seeley? And now they’re both gone.

Any hope that "indefinite" means...
…the same thing as it did with Reeves Nelson?

Monty isn't Howland
He’s not going to let Solomon back just because the team needs him.

I didn't think so
My comment was tongue-in-cheek

Last time our player was suspended indefinitely
he did not return to the program.
was that the end of 2009 season?
Amoke
the difference there was it was near the end of the year and because we couldn’t beat Duke to make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, there was no time for Amoke to possibly get back
by LEastCoastBears on Dec 2, 2011 6:27 PM PST up reply actions
yeah but Amoke was later dismissed from the team. He would have been a great addition to the team this year and last. He and Seeley are both averaging over 15 ppg at Cal St. Fullerton. Amoke is averaging 15 and 7 there now…not bad at all

His athleticism would definitely be a welcome addition to the team.

This guy comes from an amazing family.
And I have a feeling there will be some serious soul search sessions.
That’s what I’m hoping. Am’ra was an awesome Golden Bear. He’ll get back on the right track with the help of his family and we can get back to hooping it up.

I was thinking the same thing....
…that the punishment from Cal is nothing compared to facing his family….OUCH!
But that’s why I have hope he’ll be back. How soon, I don’t know. For something that (so far) hasn’t been made public (police reports/records, etc.) I’d think it wouldn’t be TOO long…. I hope.
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
Yeah...I know his mother...
If this is something serious, he’ll have to explain to a LOT of people.

That's a shame
I’m going to sit here and blissfully wrap myself in the belief that whatever happened was the result of an excess of ignorant youthful exuberence, and that Richard will pay his penance and earn his way back to the team.
Certainly, there didn’t seem to be anything in his past that would lead anyone to believe that he’s a bad kid.
The time to make dumb mistakes and do things without really thinking them through is when you’re young. And I know that Monty and the staff are more than aware enough to know that in the case of youthful stupidity a second chance is warranted.
So, here’s hoping that’s all it was.

Sigh
Hopefully it’s something mundane like lateness or missed meetings or something.

I’m hoping it is nothing criminal in nature.

From the tone of the announcement, it sounds more serious than that.
"For eight long years have those lobster backs made you bite the dust. It is your turn now. Make them bite and bite hard. Play, every one of you until you drop in your tracks; and when you can’t play any longer, we’ll put another man in your place. If you are repulsed once, come at them again, harder." - Garrett Cochran, Big Game 1898
These are kids....
and I try to remember that when I bitch as an angry Cal fan who wants wins wins wins, sweet glorious wins!!!! But at the same time, to quote the ESPN NFL guys, “C’mon MAN!”
wasn't the last guy to get suspended indefinitely for us
Amoke and then he left (or got kicked out)
very disappointing news indeed
This is tough luck for Cal fans,
hope it wasn’t anything too serious.

Boo-urns!!!
When I first saw the Tweet from CGB that Solomon was suspended indefinitely I immediately thought of criminal action. Possibly involving missing backpacks/laptops. It’s a sad statement but unfortunately this stuff has happened before with the Cal program. Anyone remember Monty Buckley in the early 90’s? Amoke is another example. A player doesn’t get suspended indefinitely for missing a meeting or being late for practice. Bears, we gotta hope that there’s a possibility for redemption with Solomon in the Cal community. Otherwise say goodbye to the NCAAs.
Buckley was suspended for having a gun. Stevie Johnson was kicked out for stealing backpacks. Totally different incidents.
Different but...
I’m just saying that there is a history of bad decisions and actions being performed by members of Cal Basketball. Our recruits won’t turn into saints just because they decided to go to Berkeley. Big difference now is that the program is being run by Montgomery and not by Bozeman. Do you think Montgomery would let Stevie Johnson back on the team?
come on man, hyperbole much?
I’m just saying that there is a history of bad decisions and actions being performed by members of Cal Basketball.
Cal football also has a history of going to Rose Bowls… yeah it was a long time ago, but it’s still a history…
I am not too concerned about what two players did almost 20 years ago as a reflection or sign of continued pattern.
I think it's obvious what he was suspended for
his chris brown style bleached hair. Cobbs is next on the cutting board….
I wouldn't be surprised if he came back with a simple shave.
My adopted son, Brandon Crawford. Dude hits grand slams and plays defense.
Reminds me of a comment by some commentator last year

Just bummed because I live five minutes from SDSU and I am going to the game today...
I echo the sentiments of the other posters…here’s hoping that this is one of those “coach fires a shot across a kid’s bow” to get him to start being responsible about getting to class, making practices or meetings, etc. Fortunately for the team (but not me ;<) it is Dec. and not April. Who knows, this may be the best thing in the end…our front line is our weak spot and lacks depth and as they progress through the year the need to go with 3 and possibly 4 guards at a time is highly probable. This could be great practice in prep for those moments.
have fun today!!
