DBD 12.12.2011 Your First Cal Game

Stay connected for news and updates

This past Friday was a bittersweet moment for me. My father and I helped moved our friend from his house in Berkeley to Yuba City. I say bittersweet because helping our friend moved brought back a lot of memories for me.

I believe I've mentioned this before but our friend lived right down the road from Memorial Stadium. Throughout my childhood my dad and I would go to our friends house in Berkeley in the fall, BBQ in his backyard, and then go to the Cal game. Now we won't be able to do this anymore.

This move also had me thinking about the first Cal game I can remember attending. I was six years old in 1993 and Cal was playing San Diego State. The great Marshall Faulk was playing for the Aztecs then and was one of the most exciting players to watch in person. That was also the Cal team that had Dave Barr starting at QB and would play Iowa in a bowl game.

What I remember from that game was being astounded about how big the stadium was. How many people were in the stands. Being from such a small town like Colusa, you're amazed about how big buildings and crowds are.

I also remember how beautiful it was that day. A perfect day. I remember seeing people on Tightwad Hill and the cannon. I remember my dad giving me a history lesson on Cal football. A Cal fan was born that day and that fanhood continues to this day. I may not have ever attended Cal, but I'll always have love for the sports programs because my father gave me that love. I'm grateful to my father for that.

So what do you remember about the first Cal you attended?
