UCLA Reportedly Hires Jim Mora To Be Next Bruins Head Coach

LA Times reports that the younger Mora is on his way to Westwood.

UCLA has reached an agreement to hire former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks coach Jim L. Mora, according to a person familiar with the situation who is not authorized to speak on the subject.

UCLA is expected to make a formal announcement on Saturday, and he is to be introduced next week at a news conference.

Quizzical move. I'm guessing UCLA is trying to replicate the Pete Carroll to SC formula and see if a pro head coach can succeed in LA with all the recruiting talent available to him. Mora has never really been a college coach as the LA Times article mentioned, so I wonder if this'll work out the way Bruins fans are hoping it'll work out.

UCLA will be one of many interesting teams to follow in the conference next season, but I'd have to say after the exciting Mike Leach and Rich Rodriguez appointments, this hire leaves me a little puzzled. What say you?

Yeah, I sort of feel like there’s no way to know if this is a good hire now, just as there was no way to tell that Pete Carroll would be any good. I respect Mora Jr. as a coach, but College Football is all about recruiting, and there’s just no way to tell if he’ll be any good at what is really the most important part. The X’s and O’s, I’m sure he can handle that.

Given the looseness with which they applied the "Jr." honorific

anybody can be Jim Mora III.

Hopefully whoever they hire as the next UCLA coach will have to take on that name. It’ll be kinda like the papacy, except that there’s a lot more zealotry at BN.

From what I understand, the mods over at bn have begun the process of dipping long sticks of wood into pitch, and fashioning rudimentary pitchforks, hoes, and other medieval agricultural implements in advance of their march to Westwood.

Their rational, considerate, and moderate behavior throughout this entire process should be condoned. Those folks really did show the rest of us what class truly is.

I got banned from Bruins Nation

Two, someone posted that the reason people like to mock Ucla is because they’re a “sleeping giant.” I said that no, we mock you because you suck. They’re pretty sensitive over there. Oh well, at least I had fun on my way out.

I made a slight crack about “little brother” but was, and here’s the emphasis, completely and totally sympathetic to a Mora hire being terrible for the program. I was publicly stating that I felt bad for their fanbase. And I got reamed in return! For agreeing!

...and I'm not alone

…from ESPN Insider

The SEC is poised to see one of its members win a sixth consecutive Allstate BCS National Championship for a number of reasons. For starters, the league has the most talented players (more SEC alumni fill NFL rosters than any other conference) and the most accomplished coaches (four of the 12 current head coaches have national championship rings).

The tradition, the facilities, the fan bases and the game’s popularity in the South further distance the conference from many of its peers.

However, as dominant as the conference has been in recent seasons, another league is poised to end the SEC’s reign as the best in America: the Pac-12.

Good hire for UCLA

Mora Jr. will prove to be a better coach than RN.

Whether or not he has what it takes to get UCLA into the top 2 in their division is unknown. But UCLA with RN was not going to stay in that position.

When your program is down, it’s all about getting into position to claim the powerhouse rankings within your conference. Championships occur when the program steadily improves. If Mora Jr can show steady progress in UCLA’s program, then he will have been an excellent hire.

by Cugel on Dec 10, 2011 10:16 AM PST up reply actions

Point taken

But it’s not exactly a prerequisite to building an improving football program or even a championship football program. Just ask our Trojan friends how many of them were excited about Pete Carroll’s hire in 2001. He was, at best, third choice behind Mike Reilly and Mike Bellotti.

Hey, exciting hires have been less than stellar as well. Ask Notre Dame fans just how excited they were that Charlie Weis was hired. I’d say they were excited to be getting the OC of the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots as their new head coach.

It still comes down to this question, “Can this candidate show measurable improvement over the previous head coach?”

And there's very little reason to believe Mora can do that unless you're willing to take a few particular leaps of faith.

I don’t need leaps of faith to know that RN had used up whatever oxygen he had as UCLA HC and that if head stayed for 2012, he would have had a disastrous season. It’s not a stretch to me to think that had RN stayed at UCLA in 2012 it would have been comparable to Cal in 2001.

No, I’m not saying that Mora will be comparable to Tedford in 2002. Only that Mora in 2012 would be better than Neuheisel would have been in 2012.

I’m not sure that Mora will be anything more than a placeholder for UCLA; that is, keeping the seat warm for the next contestant. But then again, that describes most college football HCs.

But what defines measurable improvement?

UCLA has 6 and maybe 7 wins this season. That’s not bad, but they’ve generally been REALLY bad these past several years. Is it about getting to 8 wins? 9 wins?

Is it about winning the Pac-12 South? Rose Bowl?

UCLA fans seem to be set on winning the Pac-12 South. Technically, they did this year, but not really, yknow. I don’t see UCLA doing it in the next few years. I think Arizona will be much improved under RichRod. I think Utah will get back on its feet after a rough first year in the Pac-12.

And I’ll believe that USC will stumble when I see it. They seem as good as ever!

Is CJMJ the guy to take UCLA to 6-8 wins? Perhaps. Is that sufficient improvement to make the fanbase happy? I don’t believe so.

UCLA Names Jim L. Mora Head Football Coach

UCLA has named former Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons head coach Jim L. Mora its Head Football Coach, replacing the departed Rick Neuheisel, it was announced today by UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero.

Mora will be formally introduced to the Los Angeles media at a press conference early next week.

“I am proud to announce today that Jim Mora has accepted the position of head football coach at UCLA,” said Guerrero. “He has been a head coach at the game’s highest level and has clearly demonstrated to me that he is hungry and eager to return to the sidelines.”

SO MUCH LULZ
Mora emerged as a candidate late last week after Boise State’s Chris Petersen, UCLA’s first choice, turned down a five-year deal worth more than $3-million annually.

Guerrero interviewed Houston coach Kevin Sumlin in Texas last Saturday. Sumlin, however, chose to pursue the Texas A&M post and potentially other coaching options after meeting with Guerrero over the weekend. UCLA also contacted Miami coach Al Golden late last week. Golden has since informed UCLA officials he is not interested in the Bruin job. Cincinnati coach Butch Jones, high on UCLA’s original list, said on Tuesday he plans to stay at the Big East school.

UCLA representatives also contacted Washington coach and former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian early in the search. Sarkisian was not interested in leaving the Huskies.

http://ucla.ocregister.com/2011/12/10/reports-ucla-to-hire-mora/60304/

What should be worrying to UCLA fans is that Mora has had his eyes on the Husky job. If the Huskies ever tired of Sark and Mora was even half-successful at UCLA, he might turn his eyes up to the Northwest. Don’t believe me? He stated publicly he’d drop his coaching gig with Atlanta and become head coach of the Huskies he was with coaching Vick and the Falcons (you know, as a ‘joke’). Everyman says those things if he’s drunk; Jim Mora says these things sober.

By supporting this hire you are supporting the prevailing culture at Morgan Center
Many of us are also concerned with the state of the facilities etc. However, this hire reflects status quo, as in the insular, tonedeaf and arrogant culture in Morgan Center. This is the same culture that is responsible for the substandard facilities, pauley renovation fiasco, student seating "survey" etc.
So by supporting this hire, DG will think he has done okay with this coaching search. If he can’t run a coaching search befitting our U.C.L.A. (as befittingly and proudly spelled the way gbruin does), he should be gone now and not if this new hire actually work out in the forlorn future.

Jim Mora Hire = Nuclear Detonation

Game Over

Will the last one out of UCLA turn off the lights?

September 13, 1980 – December 10, 2011 RIP
I have been following the Bruins for 32 years and my father and grandfather take that tradition back to the end of WWII. I will be ending that tradition today. They couldn’t have hired a worse coach. The fans and alumni don’t want him. The recruits don’t know him and he hasn’t been on a recruiting trip in 25 years. The current players won’t respect him as he’s never won. He can’t be replaced as the administration just gave him a financially handicapping 5 year $12 mil deal when not a single other team was bidding for his services. FIVE YEARS! And, the guy is a jerk. Listen to the Doug Gotlieb interview from a couple years ago. He’s a complete tool. I challenge you to find a worse hire. When you fire a coach it’s the end of a disappointing era and an opportunity to turn everything around; to be given hope and to be energized. Are you feeling hopeful and energized? We were just promised 7 to 10 years of ineptitude. Seriously, I’m done. People say that all the time but I AM DONE until this regime is gone. There is no hope. I can see clearly now that we the fans and alumni care more about the program than those that have been entrusted its care. Watch the defections of players in droves. This might be the one hire that makes Hundley leave. Deny the contract, fire DG, or go to hell.

Keeping expectations modest:

He doesn’t deserve anything yet
If he wins 10 games, he’ll deserve one more year after that and we’ll take it from there.

“Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.”

This Dude Is A LIFE TIME LOSER!!!!!!!!
Behold, The Life Time Record of Jim Mor-ASS
(This Record Cannot Be Published and Re-Published Enough To Bruins Everywhere):
ATL 2004 11 5 0 .688
ATL 2005 8 8 0 .500
ATL 2006 7 9 0 .438
ATL Total 26 22 0 .542
SEA 2009 5 11 0 .313
SEA Total 5 11 0 .313 –
Total 31 33 0 .470 1 1 .500
His entire body of work is under .500.
Sounds like a FRAT BROTHER Hire.
Lambda Chi Alpha is his frat.
Are Block and Guerrero his frat?
MorASS can be pressured to resign before he even starts:
Work phone. Employer. Emails. Letters. Total, complete harrassment.
Dude could be gone long before the bowl game.
How is UCLA going to hire anybody with a LOSING RECORD to coach our
Football team? We already know about losing. We need a winner!

LOL call the regents?

I think they have more pressing issues on their minds. They can’t seem to handle those issues too well either but that’s another story for another day.

Bears Fans Rejoice

This is the best ever. Better than Slick Rick even. Jim Mora? Arizona got Rich Rod, Wassu got Mike Leach (which should scare everyone in the Pac 10), and the best UCLA can come up with is Mora? Chalk up a few more wins for Tedford.

Junior will soon be paraphasing his dad, “Bowl Game? Don’t talk about Bowl Games. I just hope we can win a game.”

Ya, maybe with Mora as head coach, we can win a game down in LA now!
