Cal Volleyball Takes On Utah In Pac-12 Tilt
The game starts at 6 PM tonight. Yes, a rare Thursday night game. But it's out in Utah, so when you factor in time zones and whatnot, it's actually starting Friday night in Salt Lake City. More on the matchup:
Cal vs. Utah - Take One
The Bears were victorious over the Utes in the first meeting of the year - a 3-0 win at Haas Pavilion on Sept. 17. In set one, California dominated Utah, out hitting the Utes .536 to .000 to take the set, 25-9. In this set, Tarah Murrey had a set-high eight kills, Elly Barrett had 14 assists and Kat Brown added three blocks. Set two was a much closer game, as Utah opened with a slight lead; however, Cal battled back and regained the lead early on. Even so, the Utes would not back off, never letting the gap exceed four points, until the set point, when the Bears won 25-20. Christina Higgins had the final two kills to give the Bears the second set. The third and final set was the closest of the three. While the set remained close throughout, after the initial opening point, the Bears were able to keep hold of the lead until a kill by the Utes tied the score at 23-23. Utah pulled ahead with a double stuff on a Murrey swing, but Johnson and Brown answered back with a double block of their own on the very next play. This would give Cal the momentum it needed to power through and take the final set, 26-24. Overall, the Utes out blocked the Bears 9-6, but California's hitting was no match for Utah, which ultimately led to Cal's victory.
So, how can you follow along with this big matchup? There are a few ways:
1. Gametracker.
2. Twitter
3. Online streaming video via Utah Athletics Website
Thanks to the Utah Athletics Website for streaming the game. As it is an away game, Cal does not stream it. So, this should be a big matchup between two tough teams. Follow along and put your thoughts in the comments. GO BEARS!!!
Note: No open thread tonight for the women's basketball exhibition game because there isn't a stream available

There was some confusion re: Mountain time and Pacific time. Luckily we didn’t miss much, and Cal is up 19-16 in the first set!

any link to watch the haas feed?
it was free to attend, how about free to view, too?
ugh, Bears down 20-22 and had to take a timeout
don’t like this view (back line) as opposed to the usual sideline view

23-18 now
Utah made a valiant to keep it close but Cal got the points in a couple broken plays to increase the advantage

Cal ties it up at 1 set apiece, winning set 2 by the score of 25-19
With this camera angle, it’s a bit easier to see that Barrett hasn’t been super sharp with few of her sets
For the match so far,
Tarah Murrey has 10 kills to lead the Bears but only a hitting percentage of 0.033
also no Gehan (yet) in the match, Marlee Davis also appears to have regain her spot as the #2/3 defensive specialist over Lauren Loerch

not sure how it happened, but we're heading into set 4 with Cal down 1 set to 2
Utah is playing pretty well and Cal’s blocking has been non-existent
obviously, Cal still has a good shot to pull this one off
and this can be a good learning experience

Cal trailing in the fourth set 12-10, after being up 10-8. This is not good.
"I’ll kill you. I’ll crush you. You don’t know who I am. I’ll kick your ass. And don’t ever call me a ding dong again."
This is clearly my fault.
Whenever I follow vball, facepalmage follows.
I better log off.

No! Cal’s back ahead 16-14 in the fourth!

18-14 Cal. Time out Utah.
"I’ll kill you. I’ll crush you. You don’t know who I am. I’ll kick your ass. And don’t ever call me a ding dong again."
Cal finally starting to get some points via the block
I don’t know how much of this has to do with Shoenweiss being in for Hawari in this set

according to gametracker, Cal hit .000 for set 4
it was actually negative all the way until that last kill to finish off the set…fortunately, Utah was hitting even more negative
0.028 after that last kill to end the set

This announcer insists on always giving the Utah score first, even when they’re behind. It’s quite annoying.
"I’ll kill you. I’ll crush you. You don’t know who I am. I’ll kick your ass. And don’t ever call me a ding dong again."
Isn’t that how you’re supposed to? That’s how I was taught in elementary school… Home team score is always first

yeah, but I think a lot of schools play in gyms of this size
it’s possibly similar to the setup at Maryland where volleyball play in a smaller gym (sharing it with gymnastic, wrestling, and competitive cheers) next to the main basketball court

Utah probably played above their heads this game
The Cal attack was rather mediocre tonight. Cal didn’t really try any misdirection at all and the one attack does get beat quite a few times.

In other Cal news
The Cal women blew out Vanguard by the score of 99-58 with 6 Bears in double figures and every player on the roster getting at least 7 minutes on the floor. Easily the most eye-popping stat line? This one:
Brittany Boyd: 18 points, 5 steals, 5 assists, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 7-10 shooting . . . in just 20 minutes. WOW.

Brittany Boyd is on another level.
I saw her High School Championship game her senior season, and she was just a WOMAN on that court full of little girls.
