Mychal Kendricks Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Year
Check out this tweet from Gorcey:
Here are some numbers.
Mychal Kendricks is 3rd overall in the Pac-12 for tackles:
| Name | Team | Yr | Pos | G | Solo | Assisted | Total | Total/G | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cort Dennison | Washington | SR | LB | 12 | 60 | 53 | 113 | 9.42 |
| 2 | Chaz Walker | Utah | SR | LB | 12 | 44 | 56 | 100 | 8.33 |
| 3 | Mychal Kendricks | California | SR | LB | 12 | 60 | 35 | 95 | 7.92 |
And he is 4th overall in tackles for loss:
| Name | Team | Yr | Pos | G | TFL | TFL Yards | TFL/G | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chase Thomas | Stanford | SR | LB | 12 | 17.5 | 96 | 1.46 |
| 2 | Scott Crichton | Oregon St | FR | DL | 12 | 14.5 | 63 | 1.21 |
| 3 | Nick Perry | USC | JR | DL | 12 | 13.0 | 64 | 1.08 |
| 4 | Mychal Kendricks | California | SR | LB | 12 | 12.5 | 52 | 1.04 |
Congrats to Kendricks, who definitely deserves this! He had to replace Mike Mohamed and move back from the outside to the inside, which was no easy task. And with some injuries to our outside linebackers the past few months, his role is more important than ever. Leading one of the top defenses in the conference with so little help is hard to do, but Kendricks stepped up and handled it all and excelled while doing it!
GO BEARS!

Wow really?
I thought the other guys who had 100+ tackles would win the award. Congratulations Mychal!
But Kendricks also had a couple of INT and fumble recoveries, so those must have helped too.
Here’s a non-yucky, $C-tainted link: http://www.pac-12.org/SPORTS/Football/Tabid/1452/Article/139179/All-Pac-12-Conference-Football-Team.aspx
1st team: Allen, Schwartz, Kendricks, Anger
2nd team: Guyton
Thought Sofele or Tavecchio might get a look too, but oh well! There’s always next year for Sofele.

Tough for Sofele
I thought he’d crack second team. He is the 4th leading rusher in the Pac-12, after all (in both total yards and YPG) but it’s tough to take(major) issue with any of the choices in front of him.

Not sure whom Marv would be in front of in that group
Everyone is a 1,000+ plus yard receiver.

Disappointing but not surprising. The other receivers on the list had really good years and factored into their respective offenses more: http://www.pac-12.org/portals/7/images/Football/2011-Stats/HTML/confldrs.htm
Allen, Woods, Lee and Marquess Wilson are in the top 5 conference-wide for receptions/game, Marv isn’t in the top 10. Also, those guys are in the top 5 for receiving yards/game (Lee, at #5, has 95.2 yds/game), and Marv is at #9 with 63.2 yds/game. Hope Marv goes to a good team at the next level though. That man has some talent.
I think Tavecchio totally got jobbed. He should’ve at least been ahead of Williamson, who didn’t even play in 3 games. Tavecchio made 19 FGs this season and missed only 3! :-/

Giorgio’s long is 54, compared to Williamson’s long of 45. Giorgio has also made more 40+ yard field goals than Williamson has even attempted. It’s pretty clear that Giorgio is a better field goal kicker than Williamson – or at least his coaches have more confidence in him.

who would have thought
that we be considering Giorgio for All Pac12 team! before the season started, most complained about Tavecchio, and some said he might produce a solid senior year, and look at the great season he had!
Agreed. For all the complaints about Genyk, he’s really done wonders with Tavecchio and Anger.

Tell you what
Tavecchio can have his award (which he probably deserves – Williamson hasn’t been the same since his injury) if Kendricks concedes DPOY to Chase Thomas. Kendricks is a great player and great prospect, but Thomas had a better year.

@ManBearCal It was a grade matter that had to do with his eligibility, but I think only Tedford and Clay know the exact details.

Well, if it was an academic issue I feel a bit better. Not that Kaelin was having academic problems, but that it wasn’t something like a character issue.
Cal’s a tough enough place for students without adding the responsibility of playing a sport.
Hopefully Kaelin finds a situation better suited to him and has success in and out of the classroom.
Being an Old Blue means embracing the "meh".
Mayyyyyyyybe there’s an off chance he fixes his grades and comes back, but then, Ragland and Siddoway never came back.

with Marv, Calvin, and Edmond gone, and if Clay can’t come back, we are thin at that position next year.

No idea. BI says he loves being compared to DJax so maybe that’s a positive.
Also same thread on BI is something about a local kid (with a offer from SMU) named Harper who is getting a visit on 12/9. It’ll be interesting to know more.
In other words, Go Bears!
Chris Harper from Crespi
he loves Cal and is okay with us waiting to offer. 4 star talent. Really good player and he would be one hell of a consolation prize.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
Any reason why we are waiting? Hopefully he commits immediately after his visit. I think a schollie from June Jones is a pretty good indicator.
In other words, Go Bears!
we're waiting to hear from hifgher rated guys like
Diggs and Payton.
Diggs would be an unbelievable coup considering he’s an east coast kid. Payton we have a pretty good shot with.
I think Harper merits an offer regardless of where those guys end up.

I agree.
Payton’s really loving Michigan and Notre Dame right now,
But Chris Harper’s been WAITING for us to say something.

@[someone] well see within the next week or so they said I might be taking an official up there Dec. 9th but haven’t confirmed it yet

the staff has done a good job with him thus far. he really deserves an offer though.

1983: Ron Rivera (LB) (co-defensive POTY with LB Ricky Hunley of Arizona)
1999: Deltha O’Neal (CB)
2006: Daymeion Hughes (CB)
Three Cal players have won offensive player of the year:
