Golden Nuggets: A Salute to the Cal Seniors
Have you filled out a report card for the ASU game?
20 players just turned in a fine effort in their last regular-season game as Cal's senior class. The Cal Kickoff gameday magazine recently collected quotes from all of them as they recall their fondest memories of Cal and express their boundless gratitude. Let's see what some of Cal's finest athletes had to say:
Bryan Anger "I would like to thank my family. By them, I was given a solid foundation to build upon a great future, which has only grown here at Cal. To Coach Alamar, Coach Tedford and the rest of the coaching staff, I thank you for bringing me into such a great place and giving me the opportunity to grow into the man that I am today. I would like to thank all of my teammates and friends here at Cal. may think that it is just a game that we play, but it is much more. It is the lead in to a system that provides us with all of the necessary tools to build a successful future. I will forever bleed blue and gold...GO BEARS!!"
Marvin Jones "It feels like yesterday that I was trotting out on the field for the first time as a true freshman, curious about how the next four years of my life would unfold. want to thank Coach Tedford for trusting in me, at a young age, with responsibilities on and off of the field. I would like to notice former Coach Ferigno for getting me to Cal and Coach Keisau who came in and sharpened my skill in my final year and trusted me as a leader to carry our guys. I would like to thank my family who traveled to almost every single one of my games! I love you all. Finally, I would like to thank my girlfriend, Jazmyn, my son, Marvin Jones III, and my newest addition, Mareon Jones, for keeping me grounded and motivating me to push hard at everything I do. "
...
Ernest Owusu "As I close my experience as a Golden Bear, I refuse to be sad it happened, but rather glad it happened. It's been a wild roller coaster. Whether I was trying to concentrate during workouts as tree people dropped their buckets on police or experiencing the jubilation of watching all of bear territory storm the field after we beat Stanford, my experience at Cal has been truly unique. I can attribute that to all of the support I have received from my coaches, teammates, fans and family. So as my time descends, just know that I will bleed blue and gold until the day I die. I love ya, bear territory. Go Bears!"
...Giorgio Tavecchio "God knows how I got to Cal and God knows where I will go in the future, but one thing is for certain- my time here has been incredible. From the times of struggle, whether it was on or off the field to the times of success, I cannot believe the experiences that I have been a part of. For this, I have to thank the Cal football program for giving me this unbelievable opportunity, thank my teammates for making it so memorable and thank my family and friends for sticking with me through it all. "Tanto, se tutto va bene siamo rovinati!" I truly lived the dream...God Bless and Go Bears!"
After the jump Cal outguns ASU in the desert, Monty's team bounced back with a solid win over Denver, and volleyball notches a big upset over Stanford.

- Finishing the season on a high note, the Bears might be the Pac-12's hottest commodity not named Stanford or Oregon heading into the bowl season. Alamo Bowl and Holiday Bowl officials expressed interest in selecting the Bears this postseason.
- CalBears.com has quotes from Tedford, Isi Sofele, C.J. Anderson, and Giorgio Tavecchio. A major topic was the team's growth and improvement since the midseason struggles. Dennis Erickson and Brock Osweiler also have some quotes.
- CalBears.com has some photos from the game: plenty of pictures of Bears running in open space!
- BearTerritory.net recaps the game and includes some quotes. CalSportsDigest recaps the game. Stiglich recaps the game and includes some photos. Uncle Ted recaps the game for ESPN.
- After a slow start, the men's team cruised to an 80-59 victory over a then-undefeated Denver team.
- CalBears.com has a handful of photos from the Denver game.
- BearTerritory.net recaps the game.
- CalBears.com has video and quotes from the post-game press conference. There were many questions about the Bears' loss to Missouri and the sentiment is that the team is learning from that experience while also trying to put it behind them.
- The women's team opened the Waikiki Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 69-54 win over Hawaii.
- Coach Gottlieb has some postgame quotes.
- The women's basketball team nearly upset no. 24 Texas. They held the lead until the final minute and allowed Texas to escape with a 61-60 win.
- Coach Gottlieb speaks at the post-game press conference. She believe the Bears can be an elite team, but they have to be able to take care of the little things throughout the game.
- The Bears opened the MPSF tournament with a 15-9 win over UC Irvine.
- The Bears lost in overtime to UCLA in the MPSF tournament semifinals.
- The Bears ended the regular season with a big win over no. 6 Stanford. NCAA tournament seeds will be announced Sunday (today!) at 3pm on ESPNU.

for the Bears to make it to the 4 team tournament (taking place in Berkeley) where there is only 1 at large bid, Cal would probably need U$C to not be upset by UCLA while Cal beat Furd in the 3rd place game.
if both of those happens, then Cal might get the bid

Thank you bears for a memorable past four/five years!
You may disagree with how the seasons went but you sure can’t deny that it has been memorable and that the Bears all gave it their absolute best.
Go Bears!
In other words, Go Bears!
Cal's bowl possibilities
–I talked to a few bowl officials from around the Pac-12 today and they all had really good things to say about Cal. I’ll have a story about that in [Sunday’s] paper. The Bears could land in a game as high as the Alamo Bowl – the No. 2 Pac-12 bowl behind the Rose Bowl – although lots of factors come into play here. First, Stanford and Oregon would each have to get invited to Bowl Championship Series games, which boost other Pac-12 schools a little higher on the bowl ladder. The Alamo Bowl would then likely be choosing between Cal, Utah and Washington. The Holiday Bowl, which picks third, also likes Cal very much. And if the Bears slip past them, I’d be very surprised if they don’t get chosen by the Sun Bowl, in which Cal has never played. The Las Vegas Bowl is looking unlikely, and the chances of Cal playing in front of the local fans at the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl appear pretty remote, though Gary Cavalli, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl executive director, is confident in landing a quality team from the conference.

From the aforementioned story in the Sunday paper
Stiglich
Officials from the Alamo Bowl and Holiday Bowl — which respectively have the second and third choices of a Pac-12 team after the Rose Bowl — both said the Bears are being seriously considered.
“Obviously they’ve finished strong, which is great,” said Rick Hill, the Alamo Bowl’s vice president of marketing and communications. “We probably haven’t focused on them as much until the last couple weeks, but the communication has been increasing.”
Mark Neville, the Holiday Bowl’s director of communication, had glowing praise for Cal.
“We’ve had great experiences with the Cal football team, and their athletic department and fans have been absolutely fantastic,” Neville said. “The BCS has to shake out, and the Alamo Bowl picks ahead of us. Obviously, Cal is in the discussion and played their way into it, which is terrific.”
The Bears (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) won three of their final four games — including Friday’s 47-38 victory at Arizona State — and the one defeat was 31-28 to Stanford, ranked eighth in the country at the time.
Critical to Cal’s bowl fate is the widely held belief that Stanford and Oregon will be invited to Bowl Championship Series games, which would mean other teams move up in the Pac-12 bowl pecking order.
After Utah’s 17-14 loss to lowly Colorado, the Utes, at 7-5, are tied with Cal and Washington and no longer a slam-dunk option for the Alamo Bowl.
Played Dec. 29 in San Antonio, the Alamo Bowl pits a Big 12 team against a Pac-12 squad, and Hill said it’s important to pair teams that offer an intriguing storyline. The Big 12 schedule doesn’t finish until next weekend, so the Alamo Bowl won’t make any decisions until then.

Oh joy.
Penn State and Miami offer intriguing storylines, as does Syracuse basketball…is this what they mean by storylines? :oP

This is great news for Cal
We get the extra practice time, time to get healthy, and a quality opponent to play against!
Seeing how I am from San Diego and currently living in SD I would love to see Cal in the Holiday Bowl.

I would go to work early just so I can make the drive down for the Holiday Bowl.

I’d love to go to the Holiday Bowl after not being able to do so the last 2 times

we have a mediocre season
and could end up in Holiday Bowl, the very same bowl game that the great 2004 Bears and the Pac-10 co-champion 2006 Bears went to.
I know that Alamo Bowl was added and Holiday Bowl dropped down one level, but still, it’s the same bowl.
I know it doesn’t mean much, but just a thought.
Does the Holiday Bowl still do the "don't take the same team two years in a row" deal?
If so, then I think we are locked in the Holiday Bowl… assuming Oregon beats UCLA (lol).
cal. lakers. dodgers. packers. chelsea.
vols. rangers. galaxy.
Assuming Oregon wins and stanfurd goes to the Fiesta
I would think that the Alamo takes Washington over Cal and Utah.
The Holiday takes Cal.
Vegas takes Utah.
Kraft takes ASU.

So...
Alamo: Washington
Holiday: California
Sun: Utah/ASU (prob. ASU)
Vegas: Whichever of Utah/ASU the Sun Bowl didn’t take (prob. Utah)
Kraft: UCLOL

I think the Sun would take Utah. ASU has lost 4 straight and is probably firing Erickson. Utah fans I think would be way more likely to travel to see their team than ASU fans.

I agree. I’d be surprised if the Sun took ASU over Utah.

I dunno, I still see ASU as a more talented team with more star players, capable of putting on a better show. Regardless of Erickson being a lame duck, they have a bigger fanbase, they’re closer to El Paso. They’re probably better than Utah. They beat USC this year; what’s Utah’s signature win? BYU?

Well, Utah does have a better record. I dunno, I think when everything is equal it’s all about which team’s fan base has more enthusiasm to travel and tune in. I don’t know where Utah is on that scale, but I know that ASU is at a zero right now.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
They also beat Utah decisively head-to-head, and have a decent win over a solid Mizzou team… and maybe the announcement of a new coach coming in for next season will excite them? :)

Utah is the more attractive option rather than flailing ASU. Similar situation to Cal 2007.

OTOH, I can see Vegas having more appeal to the ASU fanbase than the Utah fanbase :)

It was more about ASU fans :)

You forgot about the Sun Bowl; I think they would pick Utah over ASU. Sun Devils to Vegas. Kraft prays the NCAA DOESN’T grant UCLOL a waiver or AT&T will resemble Doe Library during finals week.

Teddy Ballgame pumps some sunshine
What we learned in the Pac-12: Week 13
There’s hope in Cal’s strong finish: The Bears have played good football in November, winning three of four, the lone loss coming 31-28 at Stanford. They likely are headed to the Holiday Bowl, where they will have a chance to record an eighth win against a quality Big 12 foe. There’s a good core group coming back next fall, and the best news is that quarterback Zach Maynard has flashed signs that he might be the guy to lead a resurgence in 2012. Wait: The best news is a return to a renovated Memorial Stadium in Strawberry Canyon.

Teddy also talks Pac-12 coaching changes
Just the obvious ones: Wulff, Erickson, and Neuheisel.
And mentions some supposedly leading candidates for the Ucla and WSU jobs
The general gist is Neuheisel will coach the Pac-12 title game on Friday at Oregon. The Orange County Register named candidates to replace Neuheisel:
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is expected to be fired following Pac-12 championship game against Oregon with Boise State coach Chris Peterson [sic.], Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and Cincinnati’s Butch Jones the leading candidates to replace him.
From the Seattle Times, which names former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach as a top candidate to replace Wulff:
Sources close to the situation say Wulff, whose Cougars lost 38-21 to Washington on Saturday at CenturyLink Field, will be dismissed after a meeting with athletic director Bill Moos, barring a last-minute change of direction by Moos. It could happen as early as Sunday, possibly Monday.
A reversal of thinking is unlikely, and sources familiar with the process say the Cougars will have former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach at the top of their list of possible replacements. Leach has been out of coaching since 2009 after a controversial exit from Tech that resulted in him suing the school.

NCAA volleyball selection show
apparently RPI really trumps the AVCA ranking, Texas is the #1 overall seed while Iowa State is #2. UCLA is merely #9 and Cal will likely be in the same side as either Illinois or U$C and Furd.

Nebraska is another team that has been ranked #1 in the AVCA poll for awhile and Cal would have to go through them for a shot to play U$C (or Hawaii who will have home court if they make it to the regional)

by the way, not factoring the results this week
