DBD 11.25.11 Post-Black Friday Madness/Stuck At Work DBD
Good morning/afternoon (lazy bums)/evening (Garfield?) friends of CGB! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with feasting, laughter, and love.
And those of you who were crazy enough to wake up early to go hunt for "bargains" this morning; hope you enjoyed yourself! I went to Macy's at 5 am this morning and got a new suit (which I said I wouldn't; apparently, I can't even trust myself). Macy's opened at midnight and was apparently madness today. H&M across the street had lines literally wrapped around the block. Apparently, Old Navy was insane too, because nothing says "good use of time" like standing outdoors in the cold for three hours in order to save $10 on a pair of cargo shorts! If $10 is all it costs for someone to stand in line for a few hours, I wonder if I can hire someone next year to do the same for me! After all, solid business model -- they get, say, $20 for just standing around. If I use it to, say, get a tv for several hundred dollars off, then I gain too! We both win! Trademarking this right now, even though it probably already exists!
Um, so I just want to conclude by saying I love you all! Happy Thanksgiving!

Niners lose Harbowl :(
Ahhh, so that’s what a loss feels like. The 49ers entered Thanksgiving 9-1 and will head home for a few days rest at 9-2 after being on the receiving end of a butt-whupping. The game was extremely close through the first two and a half quarters, but in the third and fourth quarter, the Ravens handled their business.
This game was disappointing in most aspects, but the apparent lack of in-game adjustments and the poor play of the offensive line are the two biggest concerns coming out of week 12. When your quarterback gets sacked nine times, it is safe to say the offense failed to adjust to the Ravens pass rush. The lowlight of the evening was when Alex Smith was called for intentional grounding after four Ravens basically had a jail-break pass rush with no blitz mixed in. The 49ers could not stop the Ravens pass rush the entire game and it cost them.
The offensive line was just brutal tonight. It’s as simple as that. The game-planning could have been better altered, but even still, the offensive line was not pretty. And it really didn’t matter who we were discussing. Alex Smith was running for his life most of the night. You’re not going to get a consistent passing attack going when your QB can’t set up and fire passes away.
We completely lost this game in the trenches. Our run defense was stout, as always, but the difference between Alex Smith and Joe Flacco in this game was simply that Smith never had time to even set his feet, while Flacco had time to poise upright, pose for a few photos, write a short story, then throw.

Hello. I played 4 houors of tackle football and my jeans even got muddy. It felt very American. I threw a few TDs, caught a few TDs, and ran in a TD (that got called back bc nobody had yelled blitz on the defense and so it was felt that it should be appropriate for a QB to run). It sound 1,000x cooler than it was actually was, but it was fun.

Um, what are your thoughts on the game tonight? Where are you watching it?
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
Watching it from home in Oakland. I never drank the ASU kool-ade this year. I just didn’t buy it and still don’t buy it. I never saw us as underdogs to them, even at the beginning of the year. I don’t know what all the hype was about. Mostly, I just despise the state of Arizona and everything in it. Go Bears.

I agree with you on the ASU kool-ade. But I do have to wonder if our Bears are going to be up for this game. I mean a hard-fought loss to Stanfurd and a game that just seems like it doesn’t matter? Who’s to say how they’ll be reacting to it.
Plus, turkey coma in a 300lb lineman? epic.
Cal: Bears with Books.
But there has been something there since the fUcla game with that cryptic CJA tweet, rumors of locker room dissension, etc.; I can’t put my finger on it, but this team seems inspired now. Stomping Wazzu and OSU, tough gritty game against the furd and a reeling ASU? I think they’re up for it.
"Fuck DOOOOOM. We prefer BOOOOOM!! - alpha1906
I certainly hope so. I agree, I think this team is hungry for a win.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?

I said this before, but this game will tell me tons about how I feel about Tedford (I mean listen, I’m a fan but he’s trying my patience). Big Game left me inspired for the future. But if we come out flat like we did against UW the past few year, I will be really annoyed. If we come out and play great and win, I’m telling you (again) my sunshine pumping will be off the charts heading into next year. You may need surge protectors for your electronic equipment (and yes, I’m repeating my lame jokes).

Thank you. I had had, as you can imagine, a week of mixed emotions… needed a place to express it. The Big Game was such a, I don’t know, soul rejuvenating day for me, particularly seeing the old friends at the tailgate and then the actual game of course… I promise not to post photos of me enjoying life with Stanfurd people again ;-) but I thought it was important for what I was trying to covey.
That edit button failed you, again.
*I’m sure you meant convey (not “covey”).
Thanks for yesterdays’ DBD. It is always important to get a grounded perspective on the meaning of holidays, like Thanksgiving. Relating it to personal circumstances where one can relate makes it even more relevant and poignant.
Reading it was like reading something I might have written. I’m really BIG on Thanksgiving, because it is like a family reunion, and we even get the opportunity to include someone who might otherwise not have been part of any celebration. We did that this year, too.
I found poignancy not only in the concept of gathering and inclusion of others outside our usual circles, but also in the loss of your dear friend, Tom. I found myself remembering those who I’ve lost in my lifetime and remembering a friend, Dean, who also took his own life more than 26 years ago, when we were both seniors at UCSC. It was hard, coming at a point in which all of us (a group that formed in freshman year) were pushing so hard to finish our college careers successfully.
I’m grateful for the Thanksgiving gathering I was a part of yesterday. It’s all the more meaningful and powerful when one realizes that nothing is permanent.
Thanks, Ken, for the gift of sharing your insight and loss.

Looking back on our season this morning, I actually am seeing things a bit more positively. The Washington loss was a close game, Maynard threw 7 INTs against USC/UCLA and well, Oregon with the addition of D’Anthony Thomas, just has too much speed on the edges. We might be able to hang with them for more than a half at home, but in Autzen, on the road? Not much chance. And we stayed in the Big Game to the end. I know it’s ridiculous to say, but we’re 7 Maynard INTs away from being competitive in almost every single game.
I think the defense will still be solid again next year (I think Pendergast is actually doing a pretty damn good job, plus the recruiting on the defensive side has been great) even though we’re losing Kendricks, Holt, Owusu, Guyton, Campbell and Cattouse.
I’m not completely sold on Maynard, but we clearly have talent at the other skill positions (TB and WR) and I think Coach M is working some of his magic with the OLine. Moving into a renovated Memorial, which should be packed for every game, I think next year is going to be a lot of fun.
So, in keeping with the trend this year, I think we’re supposed to beat Arizona State tonight since we’ve taken care of all the other teams with “State” in their names:
Fresno State
Washington State
Oregon State
Let’s just make it four for four tonight. Go Bears!
basically it boils down to QB play, as always! argh!

agree. I am sold on Maynard. I like the kid.
Tonight is a HUGE “how do i feel about next year game” for me.
I wonder if Tedford “sticking with him” after UCLA has helped his confidence the last three games. I still think he gets some happy feet in the pocket, but overall, I think his play the last three weeks has been pretty solid.
BTW, how i s Houston-Tulsa not 48-46 at the half?

I started the season ready to be sold on him and was getting steadily un-sold. The last few games where he’s been a lot less mistake-prone has me a little more hopeful that next season, with more experience and better knowledge of the offense, he can cut down on the mistakes but not lose the spectacular plays.

The Lions can’t wait for Jahvid Best to get healthy any longer.
The Lions announced Friday that Best is headed to injured injured. Best played six games this year before suffering a serious concussion.
For a second straight season, Best struggled with injury. He played through a painful turf toe injury for much of last year.
And for the second time in his football life going back to his college days, Best’s season has been cut short by a serious concussion. Best’s post-concussion symptoms were slow to go away. We can only hope the issue doesn’t cut short Best’s career.

Sources: Lamar Odom, Besiktas agree
Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom has reached an agreement in principle to sign with Besiktas of Turkey and team up overseas with Nets star Deron Williams, according to sources close to Odom.
Final details will not be sorted out before Friday, sources said, but Odom has indicated that he plans to join the Istanbul-based team as early as next week if the NBA lockout continues.
Sources told ESPN.com that the deal would pay Odom in excess of $2 million if he spends the rest of the season with Besiktas. The deal — first reported in Turkey by NTV Spor and local journalist Mete Aktas — will include an opt-out clause to return to the NBA as soon as the lockout ends, same as in Williams’ contract.
Dashon Goldson fined for punching
NEW YORK — San Francisco safety Dashon Goldson was fined $25,000 by the NFL on Friday for punching Arizona receiver Early Doucet in last Sunday’s game.
Doucet was fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness when he struck Goldson in the helmet area. Goldson then threw his punches.
At the end of a play early in the fourth quarter, Goldson was down away from the ball when he got blindsided and slapped on the back of the helmet by Doucet. Goldson jumped up, confronted him and both began swinging wildly. Goldson then threw a series of punches to Doucet’s facemask and received a 15-yard personal foul penalty before being ejected.

Sushi in mountain view. Same place we ate at right before having PTB. Only ok. Got great parking spot, though. Yay handicapped placard.

Black Friday’s Dark Origins
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2011/11/black-fridays-dark-origins/
Why is Black Friday called "Black Friday"?
Seems pretty simple – it’s the day retailers go "into the black," or turn a profit for the year. But it turns out the term has a darker, less happy origin.
In 1966, Black Friday was the name the Philadelphia Police Department gave to the Friday after Thanksgiving. The police hated the day — massive traffic jams, overcrowded sidewalks, lots of shoplifters — all because downtown Philly stores were filled with shoppers taking advantage of the first holiday sales.
The goal was to make it a day that shoppers wanted to avoid. The negative name started to spread outside Philadelphia a few years later. In a 1975 Associated Press article, datelined Philadelphia, a sales manager at Gimbels was quoted as saying, "That’s why the bus drivers and cab drivers call today ‘Black Friday.’"
Anyone in SF need a roommate?
Konichiwa bitches. Are you looking for the most kick-ass fucking roommate that ever lived? If so, look no further. You fucking found him. I’m a 25-year-old professional marketing agent with experience at bad-ass companies in New York Fucking City. That’s right! What you know about experience? I graduated from Auburn University in Alabama, and moved to NYC at the ripe, tender age of 22. After deciding that New York was a stinky shit-hole, I moved back to Alabama to cultivate more professional experience. Why? So I can make millions of dollars and not have to post shit like this on Craigslist.
Anyway, so I landed this job with a marketing firm in San Francisco, and I have no fucking clue where to live. Honestly, I’m moving there in 3 weeks, so I don’t give a shit if I have to sleep in your bathtub.

LOL, later in the post
Am I interested in your pad? You can bet my nomadic ass I am! I only require 4 walls, a ceiling and a floor to shelter me from the elements. Other than that, anything else will be considered a convenient plus. I’m taking being a roommate to the next level. Email me! I’ll hook yo ass up with Facebook links, background checks, credit reports, phone numbers, resumes, references, awards, sexual history, pictures of karate trophies and a list of the top 10 women I’d like to bang before I die. If you want a next-generation roommate who consistently blows your fucking mind with awesomeness, then hit me up. I’m ready to give you money.

Didn't I read this 4 months ago?
The greeting is a dead giveaway.
Hasn’t this jerk found a place yet? Oh, that’s right, he’s a jerk.
No wonder he’s still looking for a pad.

It’s probably the same ad. A friend of mine saw it on “best of Craigslist” and posted it on Facebook. I’d not seen it before.
