Cal 23, Oregon State 6: Post Game Victory and Bowl Eligibility Thread

There will be a more detailed recap later.  But for now, this is your official post game thread, to wax poetic, rant, revel, and/or cry about the game.   Cal finally breaks the hex that Oregon State has had over it. Behind a huge day rushing the football and an opportunistic defense, the Bears win this one 23-6.  No worrying about having to get that sixth win anymore:  the Bears have it.  Bowl eligibility!  It feels so good!

Don't forget to fill in your report card after the jump.

You know the drill.  Don't be shy to comment, but be respectful of your fellow commenters.  Don't make the Hit Squad work too hard.

This is the post game thread for the Cal-OSU game only.  To discuss other games, including the showdown involving the school I will not name here, click here for the non-Cal afternoon & evening games thread.

Cal also has a big volleyball match at Washington.  To follow and talk about that one, go to the volleyball open thread.

I’m really happy that Calvin got a TD on senior day. Injuries prevented him from becoming the stellar player we hoped for, so it’s great to see him lead the team in receiving today.

I thought the loss of McCain and Wilkerson was going to hurt us a ton, but Guyton had a very nice game filling in for them. That being said, I would like them to get healthy again so that we can be even more dominant.

On one of our sacks I think the Beavers tried to match a running back one on one with Guyton or Owusu

It was amusing.

I think our passing will be improved over this year, at least. Losing Marvin will be a bummer, but I think our quarterback play next year will be better, and we have one more year of KA, plus some promising younger guys. That said, it is looking more like we’ll be a run first offense, which is just fine by me.

Not so sure about "settled"

I’m pretty sure our running game will be great next year (as in I have no concerns there) but I think Bigelow might come on strong. Not sure if he’ll push for #1, but #2 should be a competition (though CJ is coming along great).

by Bears07 on Nov 13, 2011 8:49 AM PST up reply actions

By "settled" I meant

there aren’t any questions about our RB’s being capable or not. At the start of the season, there were a lot of questions about Sofele’s ability to step into Vereen’s shoes and if any of our backups could do well in a game. I think those questions have been answered (mostly)

by FromCtoShining(Blue)C on Nov 12, 2011 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

Amen to that, I hated hearing that too.

A little harsh

I think people were mostly complaining about why we were using him at for goal-line situations vs CJA.

But yeah he’s looked awesome and has really improved throughout the season. I’m not sure if it’s all him though or if it’s our OL improving.

by freshfunk on Nov 12, 2011 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

I think at the start of the year there were concerns about Isi as stated by fiatlux. Then, they sorta morphed into “He’s looking OK, but I’m not sure he’s the big goaline back we need on those 3rd and 1 plays.” Now, its sorta morphed into “Least worst part of our offense!”

hehehe he's looked great

But it begs the question of why were we so pass-heavy earlier on and now we’re so run-heavy. What changed?

Did Isi improve a lot?
Did our OL improve a lot?
Did we not fully explore our run?

Or maybe the times we’ve ran it down ppl’s throat we were playing teams with poor run defense.

With that said, I hope our running game show ups against ’furd next week!

by freshfunk on Nov 12, 2011 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

Well, it might be the quality of the team. I dont think WSU or OSU are all that good.

That said, I think the OLine has definitely improved.

It might just be that we kinda tried Maynard and realized, “Hey, let’s run the ball.”

over 1000 yards now for the season suggests he’s been doing it all year.

I agree… the “let’s go with the run” approach seems highly likely.

by fiatlux on Nov 12, 2011 9:08 PM PST up reply actions

All three, probably
Did Isi improve a lot?
Did our OL improve a lot?
Did we not fully explore our run?

I think we’ve come to the conclusion that Maynard is better as a game manager than as someone who will march us up and down the field. We’ve given the latter role to the running game.

by atomsareenough on Nov 12, 2011 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

Really????

You don’t think we have a right to voice our concerns about player’s abilities? I LOVED watching Isi tonight, but I think a ton of credit goes to the OLine that opened the holes for him (when they weren’t Bear hugging the DLine….). Once Isi gets past the DLine he’s tough as anyone and fights for every yard. But I’d still say running him between the tackles when the OLine ISN’T spreading the Red Sea is less effective than our recent stable of RBs. That’s okay; everyone has their strengths and I’m good with that. But you’re telling me to eat shit because that is/was my opinion??? Really?

Why don’t you just enjoy the victory and be nice about it?

PS – Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t recall anyone saying he was too slow. Tedford played him as a true freshman because, as I recall, “he’s too fast to keep off the field.” Anyone saying he was too slow was either misinformed or unfairly comparing him to JBest.

Glad to hear that it wasn't this site, for the most part

My perception is that those concerns are expressed mostly respectfully here, which is fine with me. If someone doesn’t think the coach or QB are good enough, say so in a constructive manner.

I only speak for myself here and, so, don’t like the “revisionist” tag you gave me. Even if Isi starts mowing over defensive tackles and my concern about that was unfounded, I don’t think there’s any cause for eating crow or shit; I’ll be glad my concern didn’t come to pass. Legitimate concerns can be wrong with no shame for anyone.

Two things, one,he played as a freshman at WR, because there was no room for him at RB; two, every single RB needs a good O-line to succeed. It did bother me earlier in the year when fans were bagging on Isi for not being “worthy” of being a Cal running back, and guess what? They were wrong.

I feel bad that Oregon-native Riley never beat any of the Oregon teams. Ironically, we probably would have taken down the Ducks last year with him at the helm.

yes, but from the ESPN recap

“Cal (6-2, 4-1 Pac-10) won this lively rivalry game for the fourth time in five meetings despite floundering on offense for most of the final three quarters.”

Besides, a piece of a win still counts as a win, IMHO. Maybe unless you get benched for poor performance :)

6 wins

Going into the season I thought 6 wins was a realistic goal given that we were 5-7 last year amd went into the season with no proven QB or RB and minus our 3 best defensive players from 2010. I think this season’s gone about as well as could have been expected.

O-line dominance

Sure, Oregon State and Wazzu don’t have great defenses, but it’s great to see the O-line manhandling the opponent. Not long ago (MARSHAAAAAAAALLLLLLL) our running game was hit-or-miss against even the lowliest opponents.

Another thing I really like is that this O-line is downright mean. Galas and the guys have a knack for getting under the opponents’ skin. This should work well against Burfict in two weeks.

Now if only MSG could stop holding and false starting multiple times per game…

City Stages, the big music festival in Birmingham. 1995. I got free-rolled into the VIP area in shady fashion and was told not to use my real name. So I scribbled “Matt Dunigan,” the prospecting QB of the new CFL team in Birmingham.

You think wine in a box is bad? Scotch in a box is worse. And there was an incident.

So a week later, I’m reading a CFL discussion board, and somebody wrote “I don’t know if this team is going to be any good. I’m pretty sure their quarterback was throwing up off a parking deck at City Stages on Saturday.”

And then, they made me their chief…

This is the third time Cal has rushed for over 200 yards as a team this season, and for the second consecutive game. Last week, Cal rushed for 292 yards against Washington State along with tonight’s 296. The last time the Bears ran for 200 yards in back-to-back games was in 2009 at UCLA (289) and vs. Washington State (309).

If I remember right...

1 – Rose
2 – Alamo
3 – Holiday
4 – Sun
5 – Las Vegas
6 – Bowl Formerly Slandered As Deez Nuts Bowl
7 – Poinsettia

I believe 5 and 6 switch from year to year and have some flexibility in who they take – in fact, I thought at one point that maybe 4-5-6 could “draft” the actual teams in those spots. I could be mistaken.

The question is, with $C ineligible, will all seven spots go filled?

judgement call

I’m sure the Fight Hunger Bowl would love to get Cal, but I don’t know how enthusiastic people will be for another game in AT&T Park. That alone might be enough to tip it to Vegas, unless they have dibs and take LA (which I’m sure they would, given the 4 hour drive for fans who weren’t expecting to go bowling this year).

I don’t know what Utah’s record is, but I think that’s it for eligible teams…I believe Navy has a tie-in for the Poinsettia Bowl if eligible, so they would certainly love to make that matchup.

The novelty has worn off with all the games at AT&T this year, but in ’08 we had friends living in a building nearby with a rooftop deck, so we were tailgating on the roof and yelling down “HEY PEDESTRIANS! GO….”

by royrules22 on Nov 12, 2011 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

depends

if there are enough bowls to go around and enough teams with six 1-A wins. I think one of the Arizona schools missed on a bowl last year because they had two I-AA wins, and I think you can only count one I-AA win per four years against your bowl eligibility. That may have changed.

Personally, I think there are too damn many bowls, and if it’s going to stay a 12-game season, the threshold should be 7. But wait on raising that until next year, for Cal and Vandy’s sakes…

ASU was also trying to get the NCAA to waive the rule in ASU’s case because they played two FCS teams by no fault of their own. A FBS school on its schedule (San Jose State) backed out of the game contract and ASU couldn’t get an FBS opponent to fill the opening.
