Most quotes about the QB situation this week, courtesy of Okanes.

Tedford on Zach Maynard: "He’s making the right reads. Now it’s a matter of being accurate with the ball. He’s seeing the coverages. It’s just some of the timing and some of the accuracy we need to improve on."

The [UCLA] interceptions yesterday were totally different than the USC interceptions. He forced those into coverage (against USC). These were tipped balls or balls just a little bit high and safeties sitting back there cherry-picking them. The SC thing was him trying too hard. That improved, and then yesterday was a couple errant throws."
_____________

Allan Bridgford: "I feel like I can make all the throws; smart; I feel like I can lead an offense up and down the field. I’m not the kind of guy who is going to lose a game for you. I can make some throws that will keep the chains moving. Most of all, it’s just understanding everything and having a feel for the game."
______________

On Twitter, Keenan Allen presumably comes out in support of his brother: "Hero when its all good, but when shit goin bad you are the only one to be blamed, jus make sure yall don't jump on the bandwagon when its good"
______________

An aside: Congrats to Marvin Jones on the birth of his second son!

I applaud Keenan Allen for being loyal to his teammate and his brother. I have absolutely no quarrel with his statement, or his willingness to live and die with his player. It’s what you expect out of a teammate, and I would hope that he would say this even if it were Bridgford who had been named starter and who was suffering this sort of shitty few games.

That being said, I find Tedford’s quote to be (at best) confusing, and at worst to be patronizing piffle. Tedford was a guy who was more than willing to juggle QB playing time within one game. What happened to that guy? I have a very hard time believing that Bridgford is that much worse than Maynard right now. Far from just making a few errant throws, Maynard is a complete disaster at this point. He can’t make a read, can’t make a throw, and can’t make a good choice for love nor money. If Bridgford is honestly so much worse, he shouldn’t even be listed on the QB depth chart.

Being an Old Blue means never accepting success.

I think Tedford realized, after the 2008 season, he may have been able to win more games in 2008 with 1 QB and he may have been able to get more out of Riley in the 2009 and 2010 seasons if he wasn’t subjected to flip-flop gate. It’s that thinking of “if you have 2 QB’s you really have 0 QB’s.”

That being said, Maynard would be a great one to pair with a more traditional pocket passing QB, so long as you put Maynard in those “mobility packages.” I think that zone-read around the goal line is money.

CGB/UB Bull Run on Maynard before the season

If used correctly by a coach—and if he can stop trying to force every pass—Maynard has the potential to be a game-changing QB. All he was missing was touch. With that there is not a single aspect of the position in which he can’t match up with anyone. He has had two years to work on it so I assume you’ll see improvement in that aspect of his game.

Once in a while (Temple Game 2009) Zach can get rattled and then the train goes off the tracks. Bad decision after bad decision would take a game that we were in and put it completely out of reach. The only way to know if that is any better will be to see how he handles close games in which he makes killer mistakes.

salary_cap wrote a bold post-FSU win piece that was lambasted by the use or misuse of a quote. Y’know, why attempt to understand the message when you can blast apart the details?

My concern going forward is that his greatest weakness is the most important skill set to have and the hardest to teach and correct: accuracy — a QBs ability to deliver the ball where it needs to be. Touch on the football — throwing the ball with the proper trajectory and speed for optimal efficiency — is a subset of accuracy, and I saw that he struggled mightily with his accuracy when he attempted to finesse the ball to receivers. Also troubling is he struggled with his accuracy on very short routes on multiple occasions.

And now we reach Tedford, in week 10:

Now it’s a matter of being accurate with the ball. He’s seeing the coverages. It’s just some of the timing and some of the accuracy we need to improve on."

I’m seriously getting sick of JT and I’ve never beat him up that much but it is always an excuse…..I’d like to ask any of you guys ONE question…

1. How accurate was Maynard in Buffalo?….. If he threw a lot of interception there, and I think he did, what makes you think he’ll ALL OF A SUDDEN find accuracy/……I’m seriously asking because JT has now turned my into a NegaBear….it is my choice and my choice alone but JT was the swing vote….

Completely agree....

…….Making the reads is the most coachable QB attribute. If Maynard is making the reads and simply misfiring I don’t see much hope.

Maynard's stats since the Pac-12 schedule began...

According to espn, through 5 Games Maynard has…

54.3% completion percentage, sigh
3 TD, urgh
7 INT, WTF!
2 Rushing TD, meh

Those are just terrible numbers. Maynard is not the guy and never will be based on those stats. I’d like to be wrong, and if anyone knows a QB that had that bad of a season in the Pac-12 only to go on to great things, please speak up.

Riley's weren't all that much better

I think Riley was like, 55%, with 8 ints. ..is it possible that we simply don’t have a winning QB right now?

If Maynard had to come to get KA, then it was a good idea to grab him, and to push the competition. JT felt that we needed a more mobile QB. I highly doubt he wasn’t aware of his issues/stats at Buffalo, and I can’t help thinking Tedford picked the best one of the bunch, worked on him as much as possible, put him in there and crossed the fingers. Just because we don’t have a great B doesn’t mean that they didn’t try and recruit one…

If we don’t have a lot of depth at the O-Line, you need a mobile QB to give you a chance. I just think that this year, JT is damned if he did that, damned if he didn’t…I think the best we can hope for is that Maynard improves on some stuff, enough to get our two wins at home, and play Army in a bowl game.
