how did Cal lose 3 times?
Um, Jeff Tedford.

anyway, I wonder if Mike Leach is getting any calls.
Then, I’ll make a big ruckus, because I am a hypocritical asshole.

Stoops vs. Tedford
2004: Cal 38, @ Arizona 0
2005: @ Cal 28, Arizona 0
2006: @ Arizona 24, Cal 20 (OUCH)
2007: @ Cal 45, Arizona 27
2008: @ Arizona 42, Cal 27
2009: @ Cal 24, Arizona 16
2010: @ Arizona 10, Cal 9
So the road team only won once in the Tedford/Stoops matchups. Zona won once — arguably twice — when we were the better team (2006 for sure, 2008 IMO). We won once when Zona was the better team (2009).

That last one is nice.
Contextualizing: One of your players is laying on the ground after a violent collision, not moving. Your first priority should be to

B. Chase down, confront and berate an official.
I liked having Stoops at Arizona. He was entertaining, and he made the Arizona game always a winnable one for Cal. Chris Petersen would be a nightmare replacement. I hope he stays in Boise.

The possibility of Leach though?

UCLA's AD is too conservative for Leach.
He’s always been a pipe dream for the fanbase. I wouldn’t expect him at Arizona either, for that matter. He’s going to end up at a school that actually, you know, cares about winning.

they fired Dick Tomey. They fired him 2 seasons removed from going 12-1. Total institutional and fan-base hubris.

I wonder why they made the move now (as opposed to at the end of the season).
Do they actually have a permanent replacement lined up already?

I don’t think the UCLA administration has the guts to fire a coach midseason.

There's really no reason to fire him mid season

Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - R. Feynman
since he was already mentioned in this thread
John Mackovic was definitely a case where firing him mid-season was the right call. Via wikipedia, for those who don’t remember:
Midway through the 2002 season, Mackovic told tight end Justin Levasseur that he was a disgrace to his family. This and other incidents led 40 players (including future Pro Bowler Lance Briggs) to hold a secret meeting with school president Peter Likins. The players complained about Mackovic’s constant verbal abuse, such as an ugly tirade after a loss to Wisconsin. Mackovic offered a public apology to his players, the university and fans. However, whatever goodwill that he’d managed to restore quickly evaporated a season later; quarterback Nic Costa said that despite a very talented roster, many players had lost their love for the game due to Mackovic’s brusque manner. Five games into the 2003 season, Mackovic was fired and replaced by defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz. School officials said they had to act because it was obvious the Wildcats would not win with Mackovic at the helm.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Whatever Stoops is, he doesn’t seem like an asswipe to his players like Mackovic was.
In other words, Go Bears!

Well, in 2006, we basically beat ourselves, so there’s that.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
We had help from the Pac-10 officiating
Phantom pass interference call wiped out a Daymeion Hughes INT in the end zone in the 3rd quarter. If we had gotten to keep the INT we deserved, I have always thought we would’ve won the game going away. Instead, Arizona scored on the drive and it was a new game.

I love how Dan Fouts even called out the officials and said what a bad call it was. Of course Larry Scott would probably try and fine him for that today.
That call used to be on youtube but I can’t find it now. It goes in my pantheon of bad calls against CAL.

I did not really see this coming. Sure, Stoops was in trouble but I thought Arizona would give him the rest of the season to try to save his job.
by SDBear on Oct 10, 2011 7:17 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Seems like a bit of a knee-jerk reaction
No one has played a tougher schedule over the past 10 games than Arizona. They might as well have let Stoops steer the ship until it inevitably crashes when they fail to get to a bowl this year. Stoops wasn’t fantastic, but he deserved more than to be fired during the seventh week of the season. It seems like they’ve now turned an outside shot at a bowl into a certain absence form the postseason.
It’s been asked ten thousand times already, but why couldn’t we play Arizona at home instead of ASU on the road this year?! We’re already the only team to play at Oregon and at Stanford. Throw us a bone, Larry Scott!
"Some people watch adult videos on their computer - I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me going."- Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions head coach
I thought the firing midseason was kind of odd too
It probably made sense to fire him in a few past offseasons, but seems to me if a school feels it is a necessity to fire the coach midseason after some awful showings, its the school’s bad for letting him start the season. But for sure, the stench of Saturday’s game may have gotten the emotions high and perhaps some heavy donors said they’re willing to take on some of that buyout to make a change happen. Interesting news to say the least, kind of now intrigued to see just how bad that team is.
I would have given Stoops the rest of this season
To try to save his job. As you said he had a tough schedule, made even more difficult by trying to replace his entire OL this season.
That being said, Stoops was not a very good coach and he showed his lack of clock and more importanly game management with the OSU loss this weekend.
To make matters worse, he is supposed to be a defensive guy and the defense was terrible this season. Although he did lose some quality players on defense.

I think I wrote earlier in the year....
….that he’d never be fired because if things got that bad on the field his head would just explode.
Wow
I will miss him for entertainment and running a mediocre team that at least on paper we should beat. I fear yet another good coach coming to the Pac12 and raising the bar above Tedford’s head ala Kelly, Sarkesian, et. al.
He was the most fun to watch, now we only have Dennis Ericson.
It’s amazing how the conference has changed from the Teevens/Harris, Dorrell, Willingham, and Koetter eras. It got way stronger in terms of personalities and results. Nearly any Pac team can beat another on any given night.

Get off it carp
He would’ve been fired after three losing seasons in his first four. Never came close to matching Tedford’s success.
by Avinash Kunnath on Oct 10, 2011 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I thought before this season that Arizona would be mediocre, and I thought that even a 5-7 record would allow Stoops to keep his gig. At some point, however, poor execution, failure to get the best of of his players (even if they aren’t that talented) and poor decision-making (on the special teams side, especially) all comes down to coaching.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

Wiki is not updated through 2011, but it does state that through 2010, he was 72-42. As we are 3-2 this season (soon to be 3-3, I fear), Tedford is now 75-44.
If Tedford was 41-50 instead of 75-44, I have no doubt that it’d be a different situation here.

I agree, and I think he should be the coach for as long as The Message is effectively told through The Messenger. I don’t know if it is or isn’t.
Here’s an interesting hypothetical.
Say Tedford left for the NFL after the 2006 season, amassing a 27-14 conference record between 2001-2006, the upset ‘03 USC victory, the fantastic 2004 season, and the great ’We Tied!’ 2006 season. Then, Cal hired a reputable coach who went on to go 17-21 from 2007 to present while other “small market” Pac10 teams, including the once lowly Furd, overcome and rise up. Would you be happy?
I wouldn’t be happy or satisfied, but I wouldn’t say “FIRE HIM” either. Mike Stoops went 19-21 in conference since 2007.
I really hope Tedford makes it to at least 2013, but in order to make it a) his team needs to keep getting The Message and b) these epic blowouts need to drop exponentially, and c) the QB guru needs a QB that can complete a pass to a wide open receiver.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
However Stoops would have never had the type of success
At Cal that Tedford had during his early seasons.
I agree that Tedford has had similar results as Stoops lately, however, I would also like to believe that if Tedford was experiencing a collapse similar to what Stoops has the last season and a half then people would be holding Tedford accountable.
I think it is Stoops 10 game losing streak against FBS opponents, a lot of which have been the blow out variety is what finally did him in.

I dont understand your hypothetical, really. It doesnt seemt o relate to Stoops last few years, bc this mythical Cal coach doesnt include Stoops earlier sucktitutde.

From 2007-present:
17-21 and 19-21 correlate about as well as you can considering the sample size.
The 10 game FBS losing streak or whatever it is and losing to winless Oregon St, combined with an undoubtedly hearty dose of GFY to the administration is likely what did him in.
bc this mythical Cal coach doesnt include Stoops earlier sucktitutde.
So you’re saying if Stoops and Mythical Cal Coach X were somehow both hired in the pre-2007 season, they’d still be retained by their respective schools?
Stoops was stooped but he had some nice moments…

really, I’m just attempting to say things look a lot closer than they initially appear
To answer my own hypothetical, I think a coach amassing the 17-21 in conference since 2007 would be retained by Cal for a few more years. I can’t speak to what Arizona would do. I do know Tedford’s a lot nicer than Stoops, and I don’t doubt whatsoever that Stoops went out with double birds flying.

Stoops had a 41-50 record at Arizona. He was 1-5 so far this year.
Tedford just became Cal’s winningst football coach, like, ever. Even with the criticism and the losing season last year, he’s still got a great record at Cal (which I dont know and am too lazy to look up).
How can you compare the two coaches, carp?

I would say I'm a bit down on Tedford but this is a bit too much
Stoops is currently in a collapse of epic proportions. He looks like a complete fool on the sidelines. No way would Stoops have experienced or brought the type of success Tedford has while at Cal.

That's got nothing to do with it....
There are just too many teams to have a true round-robin schedule, that’s all.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Prefacing this by saying I'm not bitter about the split at all.
I was intending to mention that because of the accommodation, Cal (along with Stanfurd) is playing the AZ and MTN schools less often than anyone else in conference plays them. So those four games are going to be intermittent, you’ll miss each team as often as you’ll play them.
And recognizing, of course, that the point is a lot more relevant to the question
“why aren’t we playing Arizona or Colorado or ASU or Utah very often” than it is to “why aren’t we playing Arizona next year.” With of course everyone on a rotation where we’re all missing the same two teams for two years in a row.
Well sure, I'm just saying the Califonia schools shouldn't be complaining about not getting to play bad south division teams because they were allowed to keep their games against each other every year.
USC and UCLA can’t complain that they miss OSU and WSU half the time and therefore have a harder schedule than the other south division schools because that’s what they negotiated for.
