QB Zach Maynard Played through Thigh Contusion at Oregon
Though it's unclear when he sustained it (during practice the week before?), Zach Maynard was playing against Oregon while nursing a thigh contusion. Apparently it limited his ability to run and complete short passes. No word on whether it will be healed by Thursday.
UPDATE: Marc Anthony separated his shoulder and is day-to-day. Trevor Guyton has an undisclosed injury that he suffered against Oregon. Guyton was back at practice today, however. The young frosh Stefan McClure and Mustafa Jalil will likely get their reps.

Why does Tedford let our QB’s play with semi-serious injuries? Obviously this wasn’t just something Maynard could play through effectively, so is Tedford just not understanding the gravity of these injuries? Like with the Longshore high-ankle sprain debacle?
no bear, no care
...and we know how the Longshore ankle story turned out.
Part of me is thinking Tedford might have been thinking that if Nate could beat the Ducks in Eugene on a bad ankle, then Zach could beat them on a bad leg.
Well, we lost, so I guess that means we’ll be spared a devastating pick-6 while driving for what could have been a winning score against U$c…

Nate didn’t get a bad ankle until the end of the game in Eugene. He was his old ’06 form for the Eugene game
In other words, Go Bears!
Exactly...
…..this having the QB play through pain nonsense is a bunch of c**p and has to stop. As for Marc Anthony, I’ll be surprised if he’s back this year, but ecstatic if he is. There are shoulder separations and then there are shoulder separations. IIRC it was separated prior to Thursday’s game, and then popped out again during the game. Two times out is NOT a good sign.
Oh god knoxville….

Syd's first game was a game to forget
Unless you travelled to Knoxville. It’s still one of my favorite trips.

I did have the wonderful luck of going to Knoxville
The Tennessee fans were very kind and hospitable. I remember being offered barbecue and a chance to watch what games were still by a guy on his boat after the game ended.
But I can also remember Syd being taken advantage of the entire game. Oh yes, and I will never forget Rocky Top so long as I draw breath.

Even with an injury
And I know Maynard played terribly, but he was still able to play.
If Maynard was able to move around that much, there is absolutely no way to start Bridgford for his first ever collegiate start in Autzen Stadium on Thursday night National TV game.

They could've put him in earlier
instead of waiting for garbage time.
Given his performance, though, maybe they’ll have more confidence in putting him in earlier.
And what limited Maynard's ability to complete the other passes?
Injury or not, I trust that Coach Tedford is playing whoever he thinks gives us the best chance to win. It’s a bit scary though, that Maynard, even with a thigh contusion that “[limits] his ability to run and complete short passes,” is that guy, over a healthy (but inexperienced) Bridgford, who is now in his third year in the program.
Unfortunately...
….the past shows that he likely isn’t very good at doing that, at least when injuries enter the mix.
I just rewatched the 2nd half of Oregon and still can’t believe Maynard not making throws. He made some, and some tough ones, but my lord he missed a lot. Bridgford missed some too, but his mechanics and feet were so very much better. He also had a touchdown ball dropped by Miller and a touchdown to Allen interfered with. Even with being the young guy, he sustained a drive against what I think was still the 1st string O’defense.
I’m reaching for straws. I’m just so desperate for at least middle of the road QB play.
And by the way, it looked to me like Galas had a monster game ala Alex Mack. Pile drive after pile drive of his guy. I bet the poor bastard on defense couldn’t walk for a few days.
Suddenly thread goes from
“Why did Tedford play him even though he was injured” + speculations with how other qb’s would have fared into a lot of explanations (not excuses) for Maynard’s bad day last week.
In that case, are you better off playing your injured qb or do you switch it up for a backup? Not a good situation to be in either way.
if your qb can’t throw an accurate pass, put in the backup.
same story now and it was in 2007.
Then, I’ll make a big ruckus, because I am a hypocritical asshole.

If the backup is worse than an injured starter, leave in starter.
