Cal Football: Jim Michalczik Introduced, Charles Siddoway Dismissed

As expected, our offensive line coach returns according to Ryan Gorcey of Bear Territory ($). Woo! Nothing more to see here. For more on Michalczik's time at Cal and with the Raiders, check out our original story breaking the news of his return to Bear Territory.

Not so expected is the departure of potential offensive tackle Charles Siddoway, who could be leaving due to academic issues. With the status of Charles Ragland up in the air and Sam DeMartinis potentially graduating early, that could leave our California Golden Bears offensive tackle situation in dire straits. Cal with Mitchell Schwartz and Tyler Rigsbee as the only tackles with real starting experience next year. Will Matt Summers-Gavin have to move back from the guard spot to the outside, will Matt Williams be pushed into service a year before he's probably ready to suit up, or will Alejandro Crosthawaite see a lot of the field in his redshirt season? Cal does have guards in Brian Schwenke, Justin Cheadle, and young guys like Chris Adcock and Mark Brazinski who provide them stability on the inside, so the situation is up in the air.

Coach M has done a lot with weak talent before, but he's going to have his hands full in his first year back on the job in Strawberry Canyon.

Class balance

Wow. This means we only have 10 guys on scholarship in the class of 2013? (Bridgeford, Yarnway, Allen, Brazinski, Kaufusi, Coleman, L. King, Fanua, Williams, York, Logan)

Does this mean Tedford will be looking for 4-5 Juco guys next year to balance out the classes?

Most likely. If he doesn’t, we’re going to have HUGE issues in that little gap in between. If we want any sort of stability, we’re going to have to raid some JuCos.

Except that Cheadle sucks and Adcock played at some low-level HS program (so we still don’t know if he can actually play), and Gibson was a 3* and not really recruited by schools we’d like to be associated with. So that really just leaves us with Brazinksi (who hasn’t lived up to the uber-hype yet) and younger-Rigsbee on the interior of the line as back ups.

Things look so bad, that if M can make a somewhat functional unit he deserves Assistant Coach of the Year if there is such a thing.

Future recruiting efforts in this area will determine if Tedford retires as a Golden Bear or if he gets a swift kick in 2013 or so.

3 things that need to happen for us to have a good OL next year

1) Either Schwartz or Williams needs to develop into an adequate LT
2) Crossthwaite, Riggsbee or Schwartz (if he’s not LT) need to solidify our RT spot
3) Nobody gets hurt

The odds of all three happening aren’t great, so I’d say we’re probably looking at another year of average to below-average line play. I’m not terribly worried about our interior line (Schwenke, Summers-Gavin, Galas w/ some experienced depth and/or talent behind them), but we only have one capable, proven tackle right now and he’s a RT.

That is a major disappointment. Siddoway was a huge prospect.

This story is what we need to remember in August this year. With a weak O-line and no idea who the QB is we should all be happy if we even make a bowl in 2011.

I agree, I see a 3-5 win season from this team next year. Just too many questions

at the three biggest positions on offense: QB, LT, and RT. With so many questions at the tackle positions I see a lot of runs up the middle.

Hopefully our defene will keep us in a lot of games and get a lot of TO’s.
