AOL Fanhouse gives Cal an A so far on Class of 2011. Oregon & USC got A+s.
Monty's Boys
- Braeden Anderson, PF 6-8/210 Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts but originally from Alberta, decommitted from DePaul earlier this week. He is interested in the Golden Bears according to the Recruit Scoop.
"California and Virginia are the main schools after me ..."
At the moment, the former DePaul-signee has a clear favorite. "Cal is the favorite, I would say," stated the Canadian. "I have a good friend on the team, my fellow Canadian, Emerson Murray. They have really nice facilities, great academics and it wouldn’t hurt living in California. Virginia is a close second, though."
Here's Anderson's ESPN recruiting profile. He's ranked as the sixth best Canadian in this year's class, according to Nolan Schuman of Flagrant Fouls.
Tedford & Company
Brennan Scarlett, DE (Cal) Central Catholic (Portland, OR) verbally committed to Cal [1]. Scarlett will join an outstanding class of DLs upfront w/ Todd Barr, Viliami Moala, and Mustafa Jalil.
Central Catholic coach Steve Pyne said Scarlett has immense potential.
"Every coach I talked to – whether it's recruit-speak or what – they all kind of projected him to be an NFL player," Pyne said. "He's going to achieve whatever he wants to achieve [2]."
Viliami Moala, DT (Cal) Grant Union (Sacramento, CA) impressed at the US Army All-American Bowl Food Relay contest, mouthing down a hot dog in 1.3 seconds [3].
"Cal won’t go wrong with him, as a person and a player," Grant Union coach Mike Alberghini said. "I think he’ll have a shot to play as a freshman. He’s been a three-year starter for us. He’s extremely strong. Size-wise, he’ll fit in at college right away."
In a 13-1 season for Grant Union, Moala had 131 tackles, 16 sacks and two fumble recoveries. MaxPreps.com rates him as the 33rd-best player in the country, and Rivals.com has him as the No. 9 defensive tackle nationally.
In the recruiting process, Moala developed a bond with Cal defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi. The fact that Lupoi was suspended for Cal’s season-ending game against Washington, for earlier ordering his players to fake injuries in the Oregon game to slow down the tempo, was not a factor for Moala [4].
Stefan McClure, CB Vista (Vista, CA) set to officially visit Brady Hoke @ Michigan [5][6]. Rocky Long stepping in at San Diego State won't affect McClure's decision process much [7][8]. Cal, UCLA, Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State are in the mix. McClure's decision will mostly likely come down to Cal vs UCLA [9].
"This late in the process, it would have been easy to say no, so this is not a courtesy visit [10]."
Joel Willis, ATH (Cal) Pacifica (Garden Grove, CA) had a little trouble w/ Washington's ranks wanting to explore all his options -
"They didn't want me to take any other visits," Willis said. "I committed so early, I felt like I wanted to see what else was out there. They said if I took any visits, my scholarship might not be honored. I visited Utah and I guess they didn't like that because I never heard back from them [$11]."
"I narrowed it down to Utah and Cal," he told Rivals.com, "and I put the football programs aside and went off the education. That was the main factor. There was a pretty big difference in the degree. It was the main difference because of the profession I want to be in. I want to be in business and finance, and they're one of the top business schools in the country, and the No. 1 public school, so that was a big factor. They opened up more job opportunities than Utah did."
...
"My dad and I checked out how many people Cal has put in the NFL and Utah has in the NFL, and there's a big difference [12]."
Kameron Jackson, CB Poly (Long Beach, CA) officially re-opened his recruitment and visited Colorado [$13]. "Good chance he will be a Bear [14]." Jackson has Cal, Colorado, Washington as his leaders and Cal will be making an in-home visit [15].
Maurice Harris, WR (Cal) Northern Guilford (Greensboro, NC) is already looking at the playbook to earn his spot on the field [16].
Marqise Lee, ATH Serra (Gardena, CA) has USC as his leader [17][$18]. Lee is visiting Miami this weekend.

Marqise Lee, ATH, Jordan Rigsbee, OG (Cal) Pleasant Valley (Chico, CA), Todd Barr, DT (Cal) Lakewood (Lakewood, CA), Viliami Moala, DT (Cal) Grant (Sacramento, CA), Jason Gibson, OLB (Cal) Serra (Gardena, CA), Kameron Jackson, CB Poly (Long Beach, CA), Stefan McClure, CB named to Cali High All-State Senior Team [19].
Amir Carlisle, RB The King's Academy (San Jose, CA) verbally committed to USC [20]. Cal eliminated.
Mercy Maston, CB Bakersfield (Bakersfield, CA) verbally committed to Arizona State [21]. Cal eliminated.
Brandon Wright, ATH Palo Verdes (Las Vegas, NV) canceled his official visit. Wright will be visiting Boise State instead. San Diego State is in the mix. Cal eliminated.

Is it too greedy to covet McClure? Perhaps Coach Ambrose may be able to put us over the top on this one.
WIth the recruiting class so far, getting Coach Ambrose for the DBs, and the return of both Coach Kiesau and Michalzik, this has been one really fantastic off-season.
Very nice.

Ha, at first I thought this was directed at your own post. I even went to the top to double check that you were the one who wrote the post before figuring out that you meant to reply to SoCal Oski.
Anyway, thanks for the updates. I am constantly amazed at how thorough these are.
Don’t ever go full retard.
California Golden Blogs! Excuse me. I have to go return some videotapes.

Perfect, I've been meaning to ask a question.
I noticed that we had two RB committments (Lasco and Bigelow). Considering that there’s somewhat of a logjam at RB, what will happen (or what usually does)?
no cal bear? no care
hear he has good hands and straight line speed, but WR is jammed as well… maybe TE? I know he’ll probably play KR

Lasco is coming to Cal to play RB. His height & build has recruitniks thinking maybe WR, but the combo of Bigelow/Lasco would be the best situation given Bigelow’s injury history.
I think Bigelow/Lasco will share carries consistent w/ Cal’s history of two featured backs such as Arrington/Lynch, Lynch/Best, & Best/Vereen. The current logjam of CDJ, Sofele, Yarnway, Briggs should sort itself out in the spring. I really enjoy the versatility of Isi but perhaps he’s better in the slot, wheel, screen, or WildBear.

I was really surprised that we kept Isi at RB instead of moving him to WR, where we had problems. Especially considering that CDJ had looked good in his limited reps, I didn’t see why we didn’t spread let CDJ be the #2 back behind Vereen and keep Isi in the slot or as the fly sweep in certain formations.
OTOH, I was also surprised that we didn’t barely ever saw Loggy in the WR position either. Anyone know why he fell out of favor?

pure speculation
you mention CDJ and Loggy and why they “fell out of favor”
What stands out to me is…
…CDJ joined a frat last year…if anyone was in a frat at CAL, you can imagine how time consuming that can be…maybe focus was an issue? I don’t know why CDJ wanted to join a frat…when he was already part of the best “frat” on campus…CAL football team!
…Loggy…well, he started his music career and left CAL to pursue it…same lack of focus?
by DavidsonBear on Jan 19, 2011 12:53 PM PST up reply actions
Well, I only used it with regards to Loggy, but not in a personal sense, but in the sense that he frequently saw playing time the year before and had a fair number of balls thrown his way, but couldn’t crack the rotation as frequently or get many catches this year. That’s not typically what happens to a young player after they have a good year at a position that wasn’t super deep for our team. Yeah, he ended up leaving the team (and the university? I didn’t know that) after last year, but he was on the team all year I thought.
CDJ, I don’t know what the story is, maybe you’re right about the frat thing but I’d be surprised that he’d sabotage his football career for that.

In all fairness, there are many athletes across the country that join fraternities as well, and a handful of gain starting roles

Maybe somebody else can confirm...
but I think I remember seeing Isi see some PT at WR before moving back to RB
If you’re thinking about when Isi first came to CAL…
…yes, he was moved to WR. Then moved back to RB when our depth dwindled…
He has mentioned that he clearly prefers RB because that is the position he has always played. You can’t just move him to the slot and expect him to become Wes Welker.

I don’t have proof, but I think I remember reading somewhere he just fell out of favor with the coaching staff due to character + scheme issues. I think he didn’t try as hard once he realized who he was behind in the depth chart, which didn’t rub the coaches in the right way. Also, he’s a true slot receiver and not much else. We don’t really run a spread offense anymore and choose to go out of power/i formations 9 times out of 10. He quite honestly isn’t really needed anymore. I mean, he’s great for depth because the guy can catch the ball… but I’m thinking the coaches are pinning their hopes on Jones/Allen/Calvin/Harris. If we ever have a 5 receiver set, Loggy might be able to get some field time? Also, wasn’t he considering not playing anymore? Or was that just some delusion that I’ve gone through?
IIRC Loggy is graduating and won’t be on scholarship next year.

Sure, but last year Calvin didn’t have a ton of receptions last year, and Harris wasn’t around. Loggy was a decent possession receiver, and I was just wondering why he couldn’t have been used in that type of role again more regularly than he was. I guess if he wasn’t practicing well or anything that makes sense, though.

Hopefully the logjam fixes itself by talented players rising to the top and leaving their peers behind, kinda like the way talented guys like JJ, Marshawn and Forsett kept coming in and keeping Marcus O’Keith down on the depth chart….
by Missing Barry on Jan 19, 2011 12:28 PM PST up reply actions
Not a knock
But I suspect DeSarte and CDJ are in that Marcus O’Keith mold. Guys who would do a fine job, but the talent level is going to surpass their ability to get consistent carries. I loved watching Marcus get carries, he had surprising power and balance (reminding me of CDJ). But when you have backs that have 2000 yard seasons or go into BEASTMODE it’s tough to get carries. I hope these continue working their butts. The competition is great and much needed as injuries can happen anytime.

I go to school with Scarlett
When he’s not injured, he’s a great player. Excited to keep him in the Pac-12 North.

Stefan McClure
I had an all access pass at the army all american bowl and took pictures with all of the players who were verbals to cal at that time so unfortunately i didn’t take a pic with brennan scarlett. They all seemed to be good guys and were all excited and surprised to see Cal fans in San Antonio, TX.
I asked Stefan McClure if he was going to pick Cal and he had a big smile on his face, laughed and said i’m not sure yet but check in a couple of weeks. I had at the time, and still do have a good feeling he was gonna pick Cal.
Still amazed at speed...
…at which Moala inhaled that hot dog. 5 star talent.

I thought that was a QB.
Bring back the Pac-10!!!
Can we recruit some kickers please
i am not sure if I can recover from another year of Georgio being inconsistant
Most college football fans share your pain. There aren’t many good college football kickers. Cal’s also made a very legitimate effort to try to get one. It hasn’t worked out so far, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t tried.
