DBD 9.8.10 Whoops.
Lots of people have made really wrong predictions in life. Perhaps no one has ever gotten it this wrong.
From Newsweek, 1995 Clifford Stole
The Internet? Bah!
Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvanaAfter two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic.Baloney.
Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.
Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure.
What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.”
Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. In that affluent county, with plenty of computer companies, how many voters logged in? Fewer than 30. Not a good omen.
Point and click:Then there are those pushing computers into schools. We’re told that multimedia will make schoolwork easy and fun. Students will happily learn from animated characters while taught by expertly tailored software.Who needs teachers when you’ve got computer-aided education? Bah. These expensive toys are difficult to use in classrooms and require extensive teacher training. Sure, kids love videogames–but think of your own experience: can you recall even one educational filmstrip of decades past? I’ll bet you remember the two or three great teachers who made a difference in your life.
Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month?Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople.
What’s missing from this electronic wonderland? Human contact. Discount the fawning techno-burble about virtual communities. Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee. No interactive multimedia display comes close to the excitement of a live concert. And who’d prefer cybersex to the real thing? While the Internet beckons brightly, seductively flashing an icon of knowledge-as-power, this nonplace lures us to surrender our time on earth. A poor substitute it is, this virtual reality where frustration is legion and where–in the holy names of Education and Progress–important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued.
What things have you really gotten wrong?

Cal Football Weekly Press Conference Quotes
JEFF TEDFORD
On whether he was surprised by the impact of freshman Keenan Allen in his first collegiate game
“No, it wasn’t surprising. We’ve watched him practice for a month now and he’s performed like that during practice. He’s a very good football player, no question about it. It’s one game, though, so we have to make sure not to get too carried away with it. He’s a great kid, more than being a great football player he’s a great kid and really into it. Been a great addition just for the chemistry of the team as well.”
A few of YO’s “quick hitters” from the weekly presser:
•Virtually every local TV station came out to Tuesday’s press conference, mainly to interview Keenan Allen.
•Cal coach Jeff Tedford says Zach Maynard, Allen’s half-brother, will compete for the starting job next season.
•Tedford says there are some similarities between Cal’s offense and Colorado’s offense because the Buffs’ offensive coordinator is Eric Kiesau, who was Cal’s wide receivers coach from 2002-05
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
This is pretty significant news if Maynard really is expected to compete for a starting position next year. I suppose it can be said of all of the quarterbacks on the roster given their lack of game experience. That said, Maynard has a full season as a starter under his belt.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
You would think Allen/Maynard would have incredible chemistry. Harris as well if he is ready to contribute as a true Frosh.
Then, I’ll make a big ruckus, because I am a hypocritical asshole.
-TwistNHook
That’s the only thing that makes me like the Maynard idea at all. I really wasn’t impressed with his body of work at Buffalo. But, maybe he can make strides under Tedford and Ludwig (although Turner Gill is no slouch).
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
It’ll be a nice competition this spring between:
Sweeney – Mobile, should know the playbook the best
Maynard – Run/pass threat, has Div-I starting experience
Bridgford – Reportedly very accurate and fully recovered from his shoulder surgery.
Hinder – Needs to get stronger, but also accurate and throws well on the run
Old Toothwrangler
Nope. I just assumed he’d have to blueshirt with all the talent ahead of him. He’d have to be Jesus in Cleats 3.0 to come in as a true frosh and challenge for time.

Kyle Boehm’s season opener stats against Pioneer Mustangs (San Jose, CA)
Passing: 15-17, 228yds, 2 TDs

Boehm also clocked in at 4.7 40 this summer. Not sure if he’s JC enuff, but I’d think Boehm would get a look next spring.

Think it’s pretty obvious after the Davis game. Mansion didn’t get any time at QB w/ the 2nd and 3rd units.

I think the only reason he got in at all was because Sweeney got his bell rung.
Then, I’ll make a big ruckus, because I am a hypocritical asshole.

Indeed, Sweeney ended up calling timeout so they could swap him out.

I really have no clue who will emerge out of those four. I just don’t see how Sweeney can hold off the others. Maynard is a better runner, Brigford more accurate. Sweeney is the smallest of that group too.
Does Maynard have access to the playbook now?

More from YO on the new media attention on Keenan Allen
Allen actually didn’t come to the press conference, which begins about 45 minutes after practice ends on Tuesdays. So the TV vans got there early the cameras and microphones were waiting in the usual post-practice interview area when Allen made the trek up the stadium on his way to the Bears’ temporary locker rooms.

Good point. What frauds!
Also, I’d like to see them go undefeated playing a schedule of Florida, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, Iowa, Georgia, Miami, Virginia Tech, Oregon, and LSU, then turn around and have to play Alabama again in their conference championship game.
Then they can talk about playing for the National Championship!
7
Sorry, if you thought VT was good after watching their craptacular 1st quarter and atrocious last 5 minutes (worst clock management ever), then I don’t know what to tell you. VT is an average team and was a joke at #6/10.
Ok, Boise won on the road against an average team. Does that make them a top 3 team? Ultimately, their strength of schedule should drag them down and not allow them to play for a NC, it’ll be a shame if they do. They lose 4+ games in the ACC and 3+ in the Pac-10, Big 12 or Big 11.

What other team had a more impressive victory this weekend? Alabama winning at home against a horrible San Jose State team? Ohio State beating Marshall at home? Oklahoma barely beating a bad Utah State team at home?
4+ losses with an ACC slate? Sure, let’s look at Virginia Tech’s schedule [1]
VTech’s remaining games: James Madison, East Carolina, Boston College, NC State, Central Michigan, Wake Forest, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Miami (FL), and Virginia. You think Boise State would lose 4+ of these?

The system is what it is – the fact that it might fail in keeping a “minnow” school out of the national championship isn’t Boise State’s fault.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Look at it this way — if Boise State somehow makes the title game and they win against an Alabama or an Ohio State or an Oklahoma (again), then this opens the door for more mid-majors.
But if they lose… I can’t imagine any other midmajor getting the chance.
7
I think we’re agreeing that it’s a biased system.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I think it will have more to do with how well they play. If they play [big school] close into the 4th and acquit themselves well, they won’t do damage to the mid-majors.
I guess not significant damage, but damage will be done with the [insert school here] would have been a better match, etc etc logic
7
I’m actually agreeing with you. If they line up against Alabama and get dominated physically, mid-majors won’t sniff the championship game for a LONG time. But if they acquit themselves well, Peterson (sp?) pulls out some of his voodoo magic, and show they they generally belong, they’ll be fine.
Okay, I think we can agree all here.
Except that his name is Petersen, like a Bengali Christian, not like a Viking son of Peter.

Mid Week Notebook Football
Daily Cal’s Week 2 Summary
Now that last Saturday’s game against UC Davis is over and done with, it’s not worth much more than a scrimmage. The Cal football team simply got seven-touchdowns worth of practice reps – good preparation before playing an actual FBS opponent this week in Colorado.
Volleyball
There was some moving and shaking in the volleyball world in the second weekend of play. Luckily for Cal, the Bears weren’t on the wrong side of an upset, though a couple other top teams were.
Saturday’s match against No. 25 San Diego was supposedly Cal’s first test of the season. It was the Bears first match against a ranked opponent, and the Toreros had pushed then-No.4 Hawaii to five sets in Honolulu the prior weekend.
More volleyball
Cal hosts the Hilton Garden Inn Classic at Haas Pavilion this weekend
The 10th-ranked Golden Bears ride a 12-set winning streak into the weekend as they host UC Davis, Seton Hall and Fresno State in the 2010 Hilton Garden Inn Classic. Cal is off to a 4-0 start and leads the Pac-10 in both hitting percentage and opponent hitting percentage. The Bears have started 4-0 in seven of head coach Rich Feller’s previous 11 seasons at the helm and have gone on to extend that streak to five wins or more in six of those seasons. With its first and only three-match weekend of the season on the horizon, Cal is focused on maintaining its offensive and defensive efficiency with conference play right around the corner.

Called up to U.S. senior national team.

U.S. women’s senior national team head coach Pia Sundhage named California senior forward Alex Morgan as one of the 30 players to a preliminary roster for two matches against China. The games will take place on Oct. 2 at the Kennesaw State University Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga. (3 p.m. PT), and on Oct. 6 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. (4 p.m. PT on ESPN2).
“I’m really looking forward to another camp with the national team,” Morgan said. “It’s been a great experience so far, and I hope to continue with the team for as long as I can.”

BEARS AT JAMBOREE SATURDAY: A week after the Cal women captured the USF Invitational, the Golden Bear men’s and women’s cross country teams make the short drive to Sacramento for the Sac State Hornet Jamboree Saturday. The races will be held in Granite Regional Park, with the women’s 5000-meter event starting at 9:30 a.m. and the men’s four-mile competition beginning at 10 a.m.
Last season, the Cal women took second in a nine-team field, led by Hillary Hayes’ fourth-place finish. The Bear men were third of eight schools, with Steve Sodaro’s third-place result pacing the squad.

Cal field hockey takes a road trip
Headed to Indiana and Louisville
The California field hockey team ended its three-game homestand with its first victory of the campaign last Sunday against UC Davis, and now hopes to ride that momentum on a three-game road trip this weekend. The road trip starts with a clash against Indiana Thursday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m. (PT) and ends at No. 11 Louisville Sunday, Sept, 12, at 10 a.m. (PT). Sandwiched between those games is a neutral-site contest against Ohio in Indiana Friday, Sept. 10, at noon (PT).
Despite losing two of their first three games, the Golden Bears (1-2, 1-0) have had no trouble putting goals on the scoreboard. Cal has notched 11 goals in its first three games, and has had six different scorers. Senior Megan Psyllos and sophomore Claire Dougherty are tied for the team lead with three goals each.

He really screwed himself over with his handling of the Wisenhunt situation, though. If you don’t like how things are happening… don’t go public about it.
And it’s entirely feasible he has a point regarding Wisenhunt.
7
He really doesn’t seem like a Wisenhunt type of guy. Considering Wisenhunt came from the Steelers’ school of hard-nosed/smashmouth/impose your will football.
I’m surprised that Wisenhunt didn’t decide this earlier and push for a veteran FA QB in the offseason. (McNab anyone?) If they had traded Leinart before his public spat/woeful preseason, they could have at least gotten a bag of chips or a beer bong for him.

People are forgetting that Leinart actually showed flashes of promise his rookie year.
Then Wisenhunt came along and Leinart still had promise, but Kurt Warner had a huge resurgence. So Wisenhunt tried playing both in an odd dual-QB system that kinda worked.
Then Leinart got injured. So Warner played out and played well. So Wisenhunt obviously played Warner for the next two years, basically telling Leinart that he’ll be the starting QB once Warner retires
What hapened after this point is a little unclear. The common perception is that Leinart didn’t played well, Anderson looked better, and BYU QB Max Hall looked great in camp. Leinart looked meh in the preseason and Anderson… well, he also looked meh.
Leinart says, of course, that he outperformed Anderson in camp.
All I know is that to dismiss Leinart after this is not something I fully understand.
7
He just needs a chance!
All I know is that to dismiss Leinart after this is not something I fully understand.
For what it’s worth, I sort of agree with you. I don’t dismiss him because of these latest events…I dismissed him years ago due to his crappy arm, and because he put up huge stats because of his surroundings. Lots of college qbs have been overrated in the same way (Ken Dorsey and Eric Crouch come to mind this decade).
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
and lots of first round picks are busts. Just because a player was drafted in the first round does not mean they should have been, nor does it mean they will be a good nfl player.

Sure, and a big part of the reason that first round picks become busts is because people overrated them based off physical characteristics (arm strength, 40 times, etc), not because of key stats like completion percentage or games started.
7
sometimes
I don’t think anyone believes that Leinart has a strong arm or is very mobile. That’s not really open to debate. You think/(hopefully thought by this point) that he’d be a good nfl qb despite his physical limitations, and I thought he wouldn’t. My guess is that nfl people overrated him due to his “accuracy”, which I have contended was a result of having all day to throw to wide open receivers.
Regardless, the point still stands that the nfl draft is extremely far from an exact science, and that draft position does not determine how successful a player will be…especially compared to, you know, what they’ve actually done in their years in the nfl. And my point regarding dismissing him due to his physical limitations still stands. Getting waived by the cardinals doesn’t make me dismiss him…it helps to validate my dismissal of him years ago.

And as I outlined in my timeline above, his “years in the NFL” is misleading, which is why I’ve said he could have been great…
7
I’d say that if you’re with the same club for 4 years, same offense for a while, the team brings in Derek Anderson (Derek Anderson) 3 months before training camp, and Derek Anderson (Derek Anderson) beats you out…sure, his career isn’t over yet, but I don’t think it’s crazy to start judging him.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
And I’m saying, given his past timeline with the team, maybe there’s a little bit of legitimacy to his complaints about Wisenhunt.
7
Perhaps there is. Football is a meritocracy. If Leinart could get the job done, he’d be starting. Period. Apparently, Farrrve and that homeless looking coach with Minn fight a lot. But the coach knows that Farrrve is the best man for the job, so he goes with him.
And given that Wisenhunt nearly won a Superbowl, I’m going with that guy on this one.

Can the Raiders win ten games?
Monte Poole, Oakland Tribune
Hearts are light this week among citizens of the Raider Nation. With a new season approaching, there is a sense of optimism and even a measure of faith. Those Raiders fans who have remained through seven dog years really want to believe their loyalty awaits reward.
And it might.
Oakland has a chance for a special season. It’s a fraction of a chance, yes, but a chance nonetheless. The NFL is not what it used to be, and the AFC West, for crying out loud, is a ghost of what it once was.
And the Raiders have had their faces and spirits lifted. Campbell is a better passer, a better runner and a vastly superior leader to the departed JaMarcus Russell. With the right coaching and supporting cast, Campbell can be a 10-win quarterback.
And you don’t have to worry about Campbell being caught with the Purple Drank.

Another article on the appeal:
An appeal by the California Oak Foundation seeking to prevent construction on UC Berkeley’s Student-Athlete High Performance Center was denied Sept. 3 by the California First District Court of Appeals, concluding a four-year legal struggle between the UC and opponents from the city and surrounding neighborhood.
This appeal marked the last of three lawsuits – filed in 2006 by the city of Berkeley, Panoramic Hill Association and the foundation against the UC Board of Regents – that took issue with the environmental impacts and possible seismic vulnerability associated with the center’s construction.

AT+T to put up cell antenna on campus:
High atop UC Berkeley’s architecture building, telecommunications company AT&T and campus officials are looking to “expand coverage” to the Berkeley community with the installation of a new cell phone antenna.
Plans for the antenna on top of Wurster Hall have been in the works for over a year, according to Shelton Waggener, associate vice chancellor for information technology and chief information officer. AT&T users will be able to experience improved coverage once the apparatus is fully functioning before the end of the semester, according to John Britton, an AT&T spokesperson.

Even if he was Wurster Hall, very little of the radiation will radiate down. Cell phone antennae are not omni-directional; the main antennae axis is generally pointed out. Which makes sense. Cell phone companies don’t care about coverage above the cell tower, only around it.

Of the few unexplored frontiers that remain for humankind, fewer still present the same allure as the infinite void of space hanging around our world, and the mysteries it, perhaps eternally, will keep. As rally late, but cant win:
What can you say? I almost broke stuff watching this game and it makes me sick to have to write about it. Dallas Braden squeezed all the lousy bloop hits he will give up all season into one miserable inning and the A’s let umpteen chances to get back in the game slip away by leaving so many guys on base I lost track… I think it was 13 but it could’ve been 113 or more. After a 1-2-3 1st from Braden, the wheels came off and landed the lefty squarely in a ditch, with the M’s sending 11 men to the plate with 5 scoring. Outside of a couple of reasonably hard hit balls, their 7 hits that inning were a collection of broken bats and dunkers that would have made even bald people pull out their hair. It was all so frustrating I was surprised newly-minted TV color man Ben “The One-Armed Man” Sheets didn’t start cussing in Cajun in the booth.

Rumors of Tim Lincecum’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Well, they were embellished a little bit. Okay, fine, there was a huge, steaming pile of demise waiting back there in August, but Lincecum tip-toed around it. He’s on the other side now. Rumors that he rolled around in the demise like a drunk beagle have been greatly exaggerated.
This was the “Good sign!” game. It was a game in which every KNBR caller, every would-be manager with a laptop, and every talking head can start talking about the good signs. Lincecum looked like the Lincecum of yore, even if Arizona hit some good pitches in the seventh inning. Aubrey Huff hit a home run after a little bit of a dry spell. Andres Torres only had one single, but he hit the ball hard in every at-bat. Jeremy Affeldt diffused a stressful late-inning situation instead of stretching out the torture even more.

Dodgers dont win:
Mat Latos and Clayton Kershaw had quite a pitchers’ duel tonight at Petco Park, but it was Latos who came out on top, leading the Padres to a 2-1 win, their second in as many nights against the Dodgers, to drop the Dodgers to below .500 for the first time since May 11.
Kershaw got his second 1-2-3 first inning of the season tonight, but then allowed single runs in the second and third innings. However, that was it. Kershaw went seven innings, allowing two runs and six baserunners while striking out six. Kershaw retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. His six strikeouts give him 197 on the season, two behind Tim Lincecum, who struck out 11 tonight, for the National League lead.
Latos was brilliant tonight, allowing one run in seven innings, throwing a career-high 113 pitches. He also had 10 strikeouts and no walks. The last pitcher to do that against the Dodgers was Barry Zito, on June 16, 2006. Latos set a major league record by pitching his 15th straight game allowing two or fewer runs (in five innings or more), per the Padres.

NinersNation ranks Singletary, presumably based on physical attractiveness:
Last season we ran a weekly approval poll for 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. I want to do the same thing in 2010, and I thought it would be helpful to have a base line rating heading into the season. It’s been an incredibly busy offseason for the team as they head into a 2010 season in which expectations are as high as they have been in close to 10 years.
The increased expectations place additional pressure on the shoulders of Coach Singletary. Since taking over as head coach, his power within the organization has steadily grown and it took a large leap with the departure of GM Scot McCloughan earlier this year. Accordingly, this approval poll might involve a bit more than his head coaching abilities. Your choice of Yes or No can be based on his 53-man roster decisions, his execution as a coach during the preseason games, or even his handling of the Nate Davis situation.

CougCenter discusses their LBs:
It was apparent watching the Oklahoma State game that the Cougar linebacking corps was a problem. Losing middle linebacker Louis Bland — probably the surest tackler on the team — hurts this team more than any other injury has this year. Our middle linebackers were pushed around and it created a gaping hole in the middle of the defense. In a defense that relies on the play of its linebackers, that simply cannot happen.
All hope isn’t lost, however. C.J. Mizell was a bright spot and showed exactly why the coaching staff was high on him in the short amount of time he was on the field Saturday. He’s not assignment-sound-nor did we expect him to be -but he has the raw talent to make plays.

Travis Sandersfeld is the anti-Allen Iverson. He loves practice and makes the most of it.
The junior defensive back from Limon came on as a replacement in the season opener for Colorado against Colorado State after starting nickel back Parker Orms suffered a season-ending knee injury. Sandersfeld made an interception and finished with the third most tackles on the team, including one stop for loss.
“It was pretty much just practice,” Sandersfeld said. “Coaches put me in situations during practice. Parker would go ones and they put in twos and I`ve been doing it all camp. It`s just getting practice. Practice makes perfect.”

Hawkins says Cal is tough:
The second game of the season this week at California represents a significant step up in competition for the Colorado football team, coach Dan Hawkins and several players said Tuesday.
The Buffs returned to the practice fields Tuesday morning breathing smoke-filled air from the nearby Fourmile Fire burning in the mountains west of Boulder. Hawkins, quarterback Tyler Hansen and senior cornerback Jalil Brown met with reporters at the team`s weekly noon press conference afterward.
Hawkins said the biggest difference between the season opener against Colorado State and the first road game of the season at Cal will be dealing with the speed of the Golden Bears.

The condom dispensers are the latest evolution in a safe-sex program that began in 1989, when health workers began distributing condoms to inmates as part of their counseling before they were released.
And although sex among inmates technically is illegal, the Sheriff’s Department went ahead and installed the 16 machines anyway – one for each jailhouse pod – paid for by a pair of small grants from UCSF and a Southern California nonprofit.

I took no math whatsoever at Cal. In my day, no math or science was required of humanities majors. They put in a bunch of new requirements when I was a student, but I had just enough units to be exempt from them. The Good Olde Days.
Locomotive Kangaroo Lol
Really? I first wanted to be a physics major, so that’s why I ended up taking Calc 1A & B, but I’m sure that there were breadth requirements back in the day.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
Yes, we had breadth requirements. If your major was in the humanities, you had to take eight classes in subjects that were classified as either social science or natural science/math. If you were in a social science major, you had to take eight classes in the humanities or natural science/math. And if you were in a natural science/math major, you had to take eight classes in the humanities or social sciences. What happened, of course, is that all the humanities majors took only social science classes, and the social science majors took humanities classes. Best of all, history was the only major that qualified as both social science and humanities. So history majors fulfilled their entire breadth requirement by taking history classes! Go Bears!
Locomotive Kangaroo Lol
I took 1A, but during the semester I (1) switched from Chem E to English major, which meant I didn’t need this class and (2) a TA strike occurred, and our Math 1A TA was one of the leaders of said strike. They allowed us to pretend we were stanfurdites and switch to P/NP on the day of the final, which I did and earned a nice NP. I thought it was no harm until I applied to law school and saw it got translated to 4 units of F. But I did meet Mrs. CALumbus Bear in this class, so technically I can’t say taking it was my WORST mistake. But it certainly did get me fucked later, in more ways than one.

Let’s swim until our kidneys fail…Good decision?
Patrick’s Tahoe trip was amazing and glorious in quite a different way, however. He swam the length of the massive mountain lake — 22 miles. Then he promptly got in the water again and swam all the way back.
It took Patrick 25 hours and 26 minutes to accomplish the feat on Aug. 13 and 14, and it earned him a couple days in a Truckee hospital due to kidney problems he began to suffer near the end of his quest. But the reward was that the 39-year-old Lafayette resident became the first person ever to make a double Tahoe crossing — at least by swimming, anyway.
The dude is total stud. And crazy. Who swims 44 miles (25 hrs or so) for fun? And next time he wants to do the “Tahoe Triple” and swim across Lake Tahoe three times.
Heck, I get whiny like a guy who’s cable goes out before the playoffs if my bath water is a little cold.

Tiny ‘Flying Saucers’ Could Save Earth From Global Warming
Using a trick of sunlight itself, tiny metallic disks could be levitated to the stratosphere where they would shade Earth’s surface and counteract the effects of global warming, a new paper proposes. But even the scientist who dreamed up the idea says the little saucers should be used only as a last resort, if efforts to stem global warming by limiting the build-up of heat-trapping green house gases fails.

A predatory dinosaur with bony bumps on its arms and a strange hump on its back provides evidence that feathers began to appear earlier than researchers thought, according to a report in Nature today1 … But it is the bumps on the dinosaur’s arms that have caused a stir: the researchers think that they may have been part of structures that anchored quills to the creature’s bones.

The River Cats open the playoffs against Tacoma tonight at Raley Field!
After roaring back from a 121/2- game deficit to win their division, the River Cats begin their playoff push tonight at Raley Field. And the A’s Triple-A affiliate has plenty of intangibles on its side. Start with momentum, because the Cats have won eight of their past 11 games heading into their 7:05 first-round opener against the Tacoma Rainiers. Continue with confidence, since Sacramento surged past the Fresno Grizzlies in the Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division by winning four of five games in a late-season showdown. Finish with tradition, as the franchise has a history of success. The Cats have won nine division titles and four PCL championships in 11 seasons in Sacramento.

U.C. Davis Will Join the Big Sky Conference
OK, so the UC Davis football program isn’t ready for the Pacific-10 Conference in prime time. (See that 52-3 drubbing Saturday at Cal.) But sometime between the weekend and Tuesday, the Aggies dusted themselves off, bused back to campus and found nothing but big skies ahead. Montana. Montana State. Weber State. Northern Arizona. Sacramento State. That’s a lot of sun. And it makes a lot more sense. With UCD and Cal Poly leaving the tiny Great West Conference for the Big Sky in 2012, California football became infinitely more interesting.

What do you guys think I should do for tickets?
I won’t be back in the bay area till ASU, so that gives me four games. Young alumni tickets for $205, bluezone tickets for $191, or just buy singles? I’ll be living about 10 minutes from AT&T park, so I want to make sure to get in line for season tickets next year, although I don’t know if there are gonna be issues of demand outstripping supply or not…
You should buy the young alumni tickets. It’s only $50 a game, less than you would pay for single game tickets (especially Stanfurd, if those are even still available). And if you definitely want to go next year, I think it is safest to buy season tickets this year. Pac-Bell Park is really small. They don’t have enough seats for everyone that was at the Davis game.
So I have decided that any future where I can type on my phone and have it svow up on my computer is awesome.

I think your work is legally required to allow you time off for jury duty
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Indeed, they are. If your employer tries to take any action against you for being gone on jury duty, you have a really, really nice lawsuit. However, they do not have to pay you, unless you are a public employee. Many large companies do pay for up to two weeks of jury duty. Typically, if a person is not going to be paid for time served on jury duty, the court will not make them serve on a trial that is expected to go more than a couple of weeks. Juries on long trials tend to be filled with public employees and retirees.
Locomotive Kangaroo Lol
Typing the “financial hardship” letter probably won’t work in your case.
Your best bet is to ask for to have your jury time rescheduled for a holiday week like Thanksgiving. No/few cases are going to be tried during that week, so when you call in, your odds of being selected are very low.
Old Toothwrangler
Yes. You should have gotten notice of that when you got your original jury summons. Although it’s kind of late now to ask to reschedule, if you call the court they will probably let you do it. They may even let you pick the dates. But you aren’t likely to be able to reschedule more than once, unless you have a really good reason.

I’m curious. What are the differences in the regional Chinese food? Also, there are Hakka restaurants on Geary/Clement I think in Outer Richmond. How’s that different?
http://twitter.com/solariseCGB
Wiki explains it far better than I ever could
Hmm, after reading that article, not so much. Cantonese = light sauces, seafood, very common in the US. Northeastern – hearty, dumplings, thick noodles. Sichuan – spicy – with both numbing peppers and hot peppers. Shanghainese – sweet and vinegary. Not most people’s favorite style.
Hakka is like a peasant version of Cantonese – a little more hearty and thicker sauces.
Hakka is like a country cousin version of Cantonese cuisine – I guess it’s the difference between Cajun and Creole?
What would you recommend for Chinese in SF? I actually personally do love House of Nanking, but I’m not sure I know any better.
7
This is actually a recommendation I don’t feel all that qualified to give (I do like Restaurant Peony in Oakland though – and Great Wall in Berkeley)
I do like House of Nanking, but I also think its pretty Americanized. The better Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area are either in Sunset/Richmond or down the Peninsula.
Yeah, I think the list is a little underwhelming. I suppose there’s something to be said for ‘classic greasy seafood,’ but Sea Salt is only a mile away from Spenger’s and, imo, much better.
This list makes me believe that I honestly do not eat out enough. There are so many restaurants listed there that I never went to.
Yet, I found myself at Thai Basil night in and night out. Could do worse, but maybe I need to expand my horizons.

Sea Salt was really disappointing the last time we went. (approx 1 month ago)
It used to be fantastic. But, at our last visit, their famous lobster roll was a small piece of claw on a hot dog bun with some greasy chips on the side. Alas.

Hmm. I haven’t been there since last year, so that’s easily possible. For that matter, I’m really surprised that T-Rex is on that list as well (same owners as Sea Salt).
Now, maybe I’ll have to try it sometime when we’re in the area.
If I tell them that I’m internet buddies w/ The LeonPowe, will they hook us up or throw us out?
Old Toothwrangler
They will probably be confused.
I think its decent for upscale*, Bay Area BBQ, but I probably wouldn’t go if I was back in Texas – especially for what they charge.
- real BBQ should be served out of a shack that is about to fall over with the wood all blackened from about 30 years of smoke
Okay. Then, no offense to your cousin, but I’m going to pass. That matches what I’ve heard of the place.
I’ll stick to my backyard smoker.

Most of them you will already know, but I LOVE Five in the Hotel Shattuck. It’s a total comfort food menu, and it’s one of the most beautiful restaurants around. The crab and corn fritters and the gnocchi with bacon, peas and leeks are both very very tasty. Also, biscuits with pimento cheese. Oh yeah.

Also a fan of Marzano on College (and I think there’s one on Park, if you’re posh) for ‘upscale’ pizza.
Looks like a date place. I can’t walk into Five wearing Cal gear can I?

Thanks, Scootie!
Mrs. Kod has a bday coming up. I’m trying to find someplace to surprise her.
Old Toothwrangler
She eats everything – but her favorite is probably Italian. I don’t cook much of it at home because I’m just not a pasta n’ cheese person.

Since my wife and I enjoy Italian food, and we live in Berkeley, I might submit a few places nearby to your list based on our experiences. We go to Riva Cucina semi-regularly, which maybe speaks for itself. Also in Berkeley is Corso Trattoria, which is sort of California Italian. I like Riva better, but this place is also really good. The last time I went there was two months ago.
Fremont being equidistant to South Bay, I’d also suggest Tigelleria in Campbell. I haven’t been there in a year or so, since I no longer live that close to it, but it was consistently a fantastic dinner.
