SBN Bay Area: Avoid Drawing Conclusions From Cal's Victory Over UC Davis
My Cal-UC Davis analysis piece which I wrote for SB Nation Bay Area, and why this game was the equivalent of a glorified scrimmage. Here's a sample.
"This was UC Davis quarterback Randy Wright's first game. Wright might turn out to be a fine quarterback. But expecting him to do anything impressive against an experienced Cal defense after Greg Denham's sudden departure is asking a lot. Add in both of Davis's top receivers from last year graduating in Chris Carter and Bakari Grant, and it becomes a near impossibility to expect great things offensively."

Good points
I know it’s largely to do with there being no football to watch for many months, but I think there’s been a little too much analysis/excitement/hand-wringing over the Davis game. Allen looks good, but let’s see how he looks against the big boys before getting too excited. Not too many sacks, but no reason to worry too much until we get a team that’s more aggressive throwing down the field….etc
We did learn one thing that is independent of the competition, Georgio kicked off like 9 times and not once did it go out of bounds or go short. I think his shortest was 57 yards and his average was 65.2.
True. I was pretty excited about that. Without a stopwatch, I’m not sure if he’s getting more or less hangtime as well. Regardless, it’s nice to see the kicks almost reach the endzone on more than one occasion.
It looked like the balls that were a little shorter were getting more hangtime, which is good, and that on average our coverage was meeting the returner at around the 15. It sure would be nice if he could punch it deep into the endzone every time but I think that’s a fantasy at this point…Giorgio’s just too short to get that kind of speed for his foot.
Anyway, it looks like if we can get the returner down at 1st contact, we’re good for the opponent to start at the 20 or so. If not, more like the 30-35. Which is still probably better than the 35-45 it perpetually seemed like last year.

Yea, some improvement would be nice. I agree that there’s no chance of Giorgio suddenly getting touchbacks left and right so keeping them to the 20-30 yardlines would be good. I only worry a little bit if we’ll still be meeting the returner at the 15 (and bringing him down withint ~10 yds) against higher level competition.
… and as the intoxicating effect of a thoroughly dominating performance gives way to the cold sobriety of being a Cal fan, we all start to realize that things will only get tougher.
While we can still be happy that we didn’t pull the Furd and lose to the Ags, our enthusiasm might better be saved until we see how we do against Colorado.

Careful, man. There's a beverage here!
