It's Saturday Morning, Bears! College Football Kickoff Open Thread
Welcome to the 2010 college football season. For reals~! None of that weekday bs! We have all our threads ready for later today, but for now let's talk about some non-Cal football games. Yes, non-Cal football! Not as exciting as Cal football, but hey better than nothing, right?
So, what do we have on tap today? Lots of action this morning. You can read more about it at SBNation's Week 1 College Football Buffet. Author Sean Keeley previews all the games, even some of the ones that nobody cares about. Like ours:
UC Davis @ California (Comcast SportsNet, 4pm) - Not many folks are interested in this one since Cal is a) unranked and b) playing a team that most people east of the Sierras have never heard of.
Harrumph! Oh well, at least he linked to us. Anyway, after the jump, take a gander at the games this morning with broadcast information. And keep it locked here later today for all the Cal-UC Davis action. You can also follow us your Twitter and from your Facebook. GO BEARS!

Grew up in Davis. Started going to Aggie games around ‘80. Was there drinking hot chocolate with my Dad during the Ken O’Brien era. But a DII school didn’t cut it and I adopted the Bears as my family is chock full of alumni.
My dream was always for my little school, of which I am now an alumnus, to face my big school, at which I still hope to earn my doctorate.
Today, my dream comes true, and I am torn. I have NEVER in my life watched a Cal game and rooted for anybody else. I will root for Shane to earn the Heisman by today’s performance alone. I will root for Kevin to be flawless with a perfect passer rating. I will root for the D to hold down Bear Territory. Just as always.
But today, I hope the little guys show some sack, and somehow, a loss can still lead to a Rose Bowl victory.
Fathaigh go mbuaimid!

The small island of Grenada, West Indies is now bear territory!!! Rooting for the bears from 4000 miles away. Totally wish i could be there.
I’m rather confused by the Washington State Cougars flags present in Atlanta for College Gameday.
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team owned by a Russian oligarch.
The wazzu flag on gameday is a tradition.
There is a committee in place and a network of people who ship the flag around the country to make sure it gets on gameday every week for years now.

Yeah. Gameday has never been to Pullman, so it's their method of protest?
However. If I’m not mistaken….
Cal hasn’t been on gameday either. TRAVESTY!

Yeah, like the earlier replies indicated, the WSU flag is a longtime GameDay tradition. One or both flags (“Ol’ Crimson” and the white version) has flown in the background for all but just a few broadcasts. It started back in 2003, when Wazzu was relevant.
I always feel a little sense of pride when I find it each week. The Pac-10 is always rep’d on ESPN GameDay!!

GARRETT GILBERT ON GAMEDAY!
TRAITOR!
o=========<| BBBBBBEARZZZZZZ
May I offer you a glass of sunshine?
I am from—and returned after a 20 year absence—Red Bluff, which was Gale Gilbert’s hometown (his parents still live here). Growing up going to all the games back in the late 70s and 80s, and as part of a longtime Cal family, we always took a little extra pride having someone from our hometown being the Cal QB. Now, however, we feel a little stung.
Where is the Cal loyalty? And, really, of all the teams outside the Pac-10, did the boy have to pick Texas?! I realize it’s his home state, but come on!
Also, has anyone else noticed whenever they talk about Garrett and refer to his father, they always mention his NFL career and never his Cal days? Not even a passing mention of where he played. No respect.
Go Bears!
Wow

ESPN is going to be all over ND’s codpiece until they finally see that Brian Kelly isn’t going to bring them to a decent record.
It was the exact same thing Weiss’ first year, and Willingham’s first year… And Lou Holtz’ first year, when he brought in the best offensive line in the country, consisting of five triceratops.

Kelly’s only succeeded everywhere he’s coached football. Not like he has a chance of winning ten games at a college football powerhouse with nearly every institutional advantage and the ability to line up cupcake schedules year in and year out. Cincinnati is going to be a cakewalk compared to ND, a cakewalk I say!

Florida State has scored their fourth touchdown of the second quarter.
All four of their second quarter scoring drives have been five plays or less including that punt return. They have a 35-0 lead over Samford.

Ha, so much for that.
A Boston College touchdown makes it a 7-3 game.

My NCAA 11 update
2010: Cal won the NC by beating Ohio St in a pretty close NC game. The Pac-10 had three biggies, UW, Furd and Cal. Furd lost Luck for the season vs. UW and Cal had a easy game in the Big Game. #2 UW visited #4 Cal and Cal beat them 33-7 to jump to #2. USC did not make a bowl game. Cal was shafted in awards and All-Americans
2011: Cal won the NC by beating Alabama easily (35-7). Furd was the other highly ranked team but Cal had no trouble because Nunes went down in the first drive. Anger won the Ray Guy award. Few All-Americans. Biggest surprise was Utah winning 6 games (including one over USC and Oregon St) but lost the bowl game
2012: Cal, originally not picked to do well, went to Ohio St and killed them. Sweeney and DeBoskie led Cal to another undefeated season. USC had a close game but Cal beat them. USC went on to win the Rose Bowl and be the #2 team. ASU ranked as #13 and beat Oklahoma in the Holiday Bowl. #15 Furd gave a close game to Cal because Nunes wasn’t injured but Cal won nonetheless. Furd had lost to WSU in a stunner. WSU only had 3 wins though. Cal faced #2 Utah in the NC game and eviscerated them 56-21. It was 35-7 by the half and the backups outscored Utah 21-14. Chris Martin (:() won the Lombardi.

It’s pretty good actually. The interface has been significantly improved and the gameday atmosphere really makes it feel more like a college game. It’s great. The gameplay is much more fluid and being able to juke, spin, cut, etc all with the right stick just feels great. And it also has the Pro-Tak talking from last year’s Madden. Recruiting is much more satisfying also.
However there some really annoying bugs. The home-away part of the schedule doesn’t flip for the second season. So Cal plays the Furd and Oregon at home both in 2010 and 2011 and on the road in 2012. Your OOC schedules are also screwed. I haven’t figured it out correctly but I think selecting to play on the road makes it play at home, etc. Recruiting was a little to hard until the recent patch. It used to be almost impossible to get 5* for any team and there were only a few. It’s a little easier now.

Can anyone tell me what’s the best / most interesting game to be following right now?
It's probably Illinois-Missouri.

Does anyone else feel weird watching college football right now? Still can’t believe the season started. It’s been so long.
For me
The Furd win was so great, while the bowl game was so, eh, I feel like last season ended in November

That’s true. I barely watched the Poinsettia bowl. Freezing my ass off at Husky Stadium was enough of that season for me.

Oh god I was in the visitor’s section and Locker threw like 2TDs to the same effing area to the same effing WR beating the same effing CB in the same effing play. And I couldn’t move my legs or hands to show my anger due to the cold.
In other words, Go Bears!
What I’ll remember from that game was how at that staidum, Husky Stadium? is their annoying ass ww2 emergency siren they turn on after each score.
It was pretty miserable on tv. Can’t even imagine how angry I would have been if I was actually there.
Penn State has defeated Youngstown State, 44-14.
That’s the second final.
