Congrats to
the bears. I watched some of the game and saw some crazy moves by Allen. nice start, beat Colorado.
Kids will be asleep in about an hour. After that, it’s more beer drinking, reveling, and football watching for me. Woo hoo!

Wow, Keenan looks amazing. Giorgio did well too, and everyone else dominated as they should have. Go Bears!
Dude, Giorgio was amazing! He had several kickoffs inside the 10, with a couple inside the 5! Great improvement, I like it!

PS The davis fans were awesome. Not only are they nice people, but they mostly stayed until the 4th quater even though their team was ridiculously outplayed. And they went crazy for anything positive, even when Davis got its second first down of the game in the 2nd half down by like 48. Go Davis fans!

I was really impressed with the Davis fans as well, they really stuck it out, couldn’t have been that much fun for them. I like the team going for it fourth a bunch of times. Who kidnapped Tedford?

It either means we have zero confidence in our kicking game…or he wanted to see how Riley and the offense would execute. I’m hoping for the latter. And, I think it’s smart. There aren’t very many “pressure” situations you can create against an overmatched team. It was good for the guys, succeed or fail, to run those plays.

Plus in a couple of those spots, you’re in that tweener-space too close to punt but too far to kick – and in a couple others, you’re close enough to a field goal but up by so much that adding points is ungentlemanly. I think sometimes on 4th down, they just said “you know, just run it up the middle and what happens, happens.”
The one good thing about a game like this is it gives you some live-fire practice with players and situations that you’d rather test out against Davis than, say, Oregon State…

I thought that first 4th and 12 would have been a better time to give Tavvechio a chance at a long field goal. Some practice there.

I felt the same way. And the O-line perhaps felt the same way, too, as they appeared grossly unprepared to block for Riley on that 4th down play.

Random question related to online streaming: has anyone tried Cal Sports All-Access? It seems to be associated with CBS’s CSTV. Are there blackouts for ESPN games or anything? (not that that should be an issue this year, just curious). I’m getting tired of grainy Justin.tv feeds, especially when the Big Game rolls around.

Keenan Allen.
I was hyping him up all summer to my housemates, and they kept repeating “He’s a freshman, he’s not going to be that good immediately”. His start is a great one, on track of proving them wrong. And the student section was pretty good today, considering the quality of the opponent. I expect our section to be rockin’ for every game this year.

I heard rumors that Genyk is so detailed, he even tweaks the Anger smash formation when it’s time for a coffin corner kick vs/ a standard kick. I didn’t have a chance to study it, though.

Freshman Keenan Allen celebrated his second touchdown by slapping a high-five with someone in the stands. That earned California a celebration penalty.
He quickly apologized to coach Jeff Tedford for the mistake. Aside from that tiny hiccup, Allen was otherwise brilliant in his collegiate debut.

I really am more interested in, why can Berkeley recruit all these out of state kids and we, apparently, cannot or do not. Do they pay the $26,000 out of state tuition fees out of the athletic budget, or not? If yes, then I inderstand. Does Berkeley use the 5% “under represented” loophole to get all these kids into UC in the first place? At the expense of non-athletes? If so, we really should know about that or is this just “something we do not talk about.” The incredibly different demographics on the field today re: two UC football teams just screams to be addressed. Either they are doing something way bad, or we are out of touch with reality. Call your local AD for the answers.

Sorry! Grad school class on Sat ran til noon. Then driving to the BART station and hiking up the long hill.. I didn’t get in til nearly halftime, and by the time I got to my prime photo spot, it was halftime. By the time I grabbed myself a drink, Riley was done playing.
